Have a blast with lots of color being thrown about while raising money for Tahoe Youth and Family Services during their annual ColorBlast 5k Run on Saturday, August 19 during Carson Valley Medical Center’s Health Fest 2017.

Runners get covered from head to toe in several different colors as running/walking a 5k course. As participants pass each 1K marker, the color lets loose! All of the colors are safe and even edible as they are corn starch based.

Bird found in South Lake Tahoe tests positive for West Nile virus

The first El Dorado County case of West Nile virus was confirmed in South Lake Tahoe. County health officials received confirmation this week that a Stellar Jay found on July 31 has tested positive for the virus.

So far this year, West Nile virus activity has been reported in 28 California counties, including neighboring Sacramento and Placer counties. There have been four human cases of the virus reported from Kings, Kern, San Bernardino
and Los Angeles counties.

SnowGlobe wants 10 year extension, say they contribute $14M to local economy annually

SnowGlobe, the annual outdoor music festival in South Lake Tahoe, has come to town over the New Year's Eve holiday since 2011, and now they want to add ten years to their contract that expires this year.

During Tuesday, August 15th's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, promoters will make a presentation to the City outlining their plans, showing how they think they can become the largest funding source of South Lake Tahoe projects and non-profits.

7th annual Tahoe Show Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship

South Lake Tahoe joins others to reduce electrical use during eclipse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will pass over the Pacific Northwest affecting the California solar resources supplying power to the grid. During the eclipse from 9:02 a.m. to 11:54 a.m., the moon will obscure much of the solar rays directly affecting the output of both large scale photovoltaic (PV) electric power plants and rooftop solar. A loss of 4,194 megawatts(MW) of California large scale solar electricity is expected.

Lake Tahoe Secret Witness offers $3,000 for arrest of Manpreet Singh's murderer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Secret Witness Program if offering a $3,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of local gas station attendant Manpreet Singh on August 3, 2013.

“Friends and family never forget and neither should we," said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson as he asked for the public's help in solving the case.

Singh was the lone employee on the night shift at U.S. Gas on Lake Tahoe Boulevard when a gunman entered the store, shot and killed him.

Dinner and Melodrama aboard the V&T Railway

Across the United States people are forking out big bucks for lodging in the "path of totality," the 70-mile wide stretch of land across the country where the total eclipse will be seen on August 21, 2017. People who descend upon this path for the big event are "are in for an unforgettable experience" according to Space.Com.

Hotels and camping spots in this path are going for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for the day of the big show.

Forest to be thinned along Pope-Baldwin Bike Path and State Route 89

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will begin the mechanical removal of trees on 100 acres of forest lands along State Route 89 and the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path this week. The project should last until mid-October.

TEDx South Lake Tahoe speaker lineup announced

After a popular, and sold out, inaugural event in 2016, TEDx South Lake Tahoe is coming back and promises to be bigger and better.

The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.

Sparks man identified as Sand Harbor drowning victim

A 27-year-old Sparks, Nev. man has been positively identified as Saturday's drowning victim at Sand Harbor.

The Washoe County Coroner's Office told South Tahoe Now that Jose Jaime Partida was the man who died in Lake Tahoe on July 29. The cause of death is drowning.

They will be running a toxicology screening which is normal protocol and won't change the cause of death.

Small earthquakes north of Incline Village

he Sierra Nevada are not stranger to earthquakes, and recent swarms of quakes in the Carson Valley, Mammoth Lakes and Donner Lake are not out of the ordinary.

Overnight, a few of those earthquakes hit in around the North Shroe of Lake Tahoe.

Burke Creek Restoration Project begins final stage

The final phase of the Burke Creek Highway 50 Crossing and Realignment Project near Kahle Drive in Stateline will begin on Monday, July 31.

Douglas County, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Division of State Lands, Nevada Tahoe Conservation District and the U.S. Forest Service have partnered together to restore the Burke Creek channel and adjacent marsh. The project aims to decrease the amount of sediment that flows into nearby Lake Tahoe while also reducing the potential for flooding on U.S. Highway 50.

Truckee "Secret Garden" open for tours after public gains access

Truckee has it's own "Secret Garden," a lush valley full of rare carnivorous plants and threatened bird species that has been preserved and kept from the public for more than 100 years.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and Nature Conservancy partnered together and bought over 1,200 acres in the Lower Carpenter Valley for $10.3 million, 600 acres that is so sensitive that initially the only access with be through guided tours. 637 acres were purchased last year and treat hikers and mountain bikers to Crabtree Canyon. The final 80-acre parcel is under contract for purchase by the partners.

El Dorado County receives loan to build 11-acre public safety complex

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County has received a $57.14 million loan to build a public safety complex in Diamond Springs that will bring together the Sheriff’s Office operations which are currently spread out across 13 different locations in the county.

The loan is provided through the Community Facilities Direct Loan Program.

El Dorado County Food Bank returns to SLT with supplies

Those in need of food supplies can stop by their new location, the parking lot of St. Theresa Catholic Church located at 1041 Lyon Avenue. They stop there the 4th Wednesday of each month at the same time, same spot.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

1000s walk, ride and skate on new I-580 in Carson City

Thousands of people turned out Saturday morning to celebrate the near-completion of the much-anticipated Carson City Interstate 580 freeway bypass riding their bicycles, walking, jogging or skating on top of the pavement that will soon carry tens of thousands of vehicles upon it when open next month.

The I-580 run, walk and ride event began about 9 a.m. Saturday and continued until noon.

Free chipping service for city and county residents

Residents of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado county, Fallen Leaf Lake and Alpine County are encouraged to take advantage of the free curbside chipping service offered by the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).

The free service will be offered through October, weather permitting.

Homeowners can work on their defensible space by removing limbs and slash on their property, then the chipping crew will come by and collect it, then convert into wood chips.

This action reduces flammable vegetation and helps homeowners protect their property from the threat of wildfire.

Teen reported missing in Lake Tahoe area found safe

2:00 p.m. update: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: Juvenile Sean Ascuaga of Reno was located at Marlette Dam. He was found safe and unharmed, but will be checked by paramedics before transporting back to Carson City to family members.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 28th annual American Century Championship is in the books, and former major league pitcher Mark Mulder won for the third straight year, the first three-peat at the celebrity golf classic at Edgewood Tahoe.

Mulder and his wife Lindsey once again brought their three kids to Lake Tahoe, all who ran out to the 18th green after Mark finished the day with a three-day total of 73 with the modified Stableford scoring.

Committee to work on updated South Lake Tahoe Vacation Rental Ordinance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What does a win-win-win vacation home rental (VHR) ordinance look like?

It may not yet be known after today's workshop held during the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting in front of a full house, but all sides appear to be committed to creating something that works for everyone in the community.

Cities across the country are grappling with their own ordinances for VHRs as the new trend towards vacationing centers around renting a home instead of staying in a motel or hotel.

Couple sought in Carson City, Douglas County fraud investigations

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division are asking for help in locating suspects in multiple fraud investigations.

Brandon Newberg and his wife Mindy Newberg are suspects in multiple fraud cases in Carson City and Douglas County. Their last known address was on the 1300 block of Kimmerling in Douglas County. The Newberg’s may have recently fled to Las Vegas Nevada to avoid law enforcement.

During Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, the City will look at their City Code 6.55 Article X which is for marijuana cultivation and medical marijuana dispensaries.

USFS to start chemical treatment of invasive species in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting later this month, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will start using chemical treatment to try and eradicate, control and contain known infestations of invasive plants. Their focus will be on 90 sites covering 18.25 acres of sites inside the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Vacation rentals in South Lake Tahoe again the focus of City Council workshop

New trail map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition

A new Lake Tahoe bike map has been released by the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition that details the latest trails and points of interest all around the lake with separated bike trails, on-road bike lanes and designated bicycle routes.

The paper map will be available for free at Lake Tahoe area visitor centers and bike shops or can be viewed and downloaded on line www.tahoebike.org/where-to-ride/bike-map/.
