Schools remind parents of new immunization rule for California

El Dorado County Public Health and school officials are reminding parents of a new California school immunization law, SB 277 that went into effect January 1, 2016. The law eliminates exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school, kindergarten through grade 12.

United Blood Services is holding a blood drive Wednesday, May 18 at Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Station 23 in Round Hill. Donations have declined since mid-March and the demand has escalated, dropping the available supply of Type O-Negative and Type O-positive to extremely low levels. Blood center officials have concluded that an increase in Zika deferrals after Spring Break travels has caused a decline in public responsiveness to donate blood.

TTD provides plan for Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) Board today unanimously approved a set of principles to clarify and guide the final design and implementation of the US Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the Loop Road Project.
This plan that will answer some community member's concerns about the project by addressing right-of-way, housing, road construction, assistance and support for affected businesses, and continued community involvement.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.
Fire agencies to continue prescribed burns around Lake Tahoe

Taking advantage of favorable burning conditions, the Lake Valley Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service have planned to conduct prescribed fire operations next week on the South Shore beginning Monday, May 16, 2016.
Burning operations are scheduled to take place in four locations:
Northeast of the Lake Tahoe Airport near Barbara Avenue
Off Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road
Off Panther Lane near the west end of Gardner Mountain

NFL Hall of Famers, former Major League Baseball players and other sports celebrities will gather July 17-18 to once again pay tribute to the former Oakland Raider at the 8th annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic at the Schaffer’s Mill Golf & Lake Club in Truckee, Calif.
Upshaw, who often played in the Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe, died of pancreatic cancer in 2008 at Tahoe Forest Hospital.

Both lanes of traffic through the Cave Rock Tunnel are now being moved to the mountain side lane as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) begins their $6 million enhancement of the tunnels, retaining of falling rock and lane improvements.
Forest thinning project to be continued near Fallen Leaf Lake

A three-month long tree removal project off of Fallen Leaf Lake Road near the campground will start around May 15, 2016. Due to the heavy equipment needed, the Forest Service will issue a forest order closing the project area (units 1 and 148) to pedestrians from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily.

There will be three open seats on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education this fall when voters head to the polls on November 8, 2016.
Governed by a team of five members, only Board President Barbara Bannar and member Ginger Nicolay-Davis are not up for re-election. Seats held by incumbents Adam Jones, Dr. Michael Doyle and Dr. Larry Green will be on the ballot.
Adam Jones, who represents Trustee Area #1, was appointed to the Board in March 2015 following the resignation of Sue Novasel.

Over one hundred community members will gather on May 14 as the League to Save Lake Tahoe organizes the year’s largest single-day, hands-on citizens science effort to capture a snapshot of the water quality health of South Shore streams feeding into Lake Tahoe.

There are negative health complications that are a result of bad posture, so the month of May has been deemed "Posture Awareness Month."
In response to this focus, Dr. Joshua Welch of South Lake Tahoe is offering free posture screenings thru May, 2016 at Safe Haven Chiropractic. Included is a free report and exercises to reverse poor posture in young children and adults.
“Maintaining correct posture and correct alignment is one of the foundations to healthy living," said Welch. "It can reduce injuries, decrease flare-ups and allow athletes to maintain elite performance.”

Prescribed fire operations are planned to continue this week on the east and south shores of Lake Tahoe.
The U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry will start the fire operations on Monday, May 2, weather permitting.

Volunteers needed for Mobile Food Bank stop in South Lake Tahoe

Once a month, the food bank stops in South Lake Tahoe to distribute emergency supplemental groceries to those who need it most. Volunteers will be assisting in handing out food and signing people in. Nevada Beach opening two weeks ahead of schedule

Nevada Beach Campground will open two weeks earlier than scheduled, the U.S. Forest Service announced Friday. The campground and day-use area will open this Saturday, April 30, 2016. Campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the reservation system is up and running.

Many were hoping to see Steph Curry on the list, but with the Olympic Games in Rio just after the tournament, speculation is that he had to skip the stop in Tahoe.

The South Tahoe Public Utility District (District) is currently in the process of preparing the 2016/2017 budget. We invite the community to participate in a Public Meeting and Presentation on the Proposed Budget and Capital Improvement Plan at the District Offices on May 12, 2016, at 6 pm.
In 2014, the District sent a five-year Proposition 218 notice to all customers; this permitted the District to increase water rates up to a maximum of 6.5% and sewer rates up to a maximum of 6.0%.

Two upcoming series of classes offered by the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Department will train participants to become water safety instructors and lifeguards.
The American Red Cross Blended Learning Water Safety Instructor Class and participants must register for this class by April 28 at www.cslt.sportssignup.com. The opening dates for recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin have been announced, with the first ones set to e ready April 30, 2016.
Kiva Picnic area, Baldwin and Nevada beaches, Big Meadow trailhead, the McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area and Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas will open April 30, 2016.
The Tallac Historic Site opens April 30, 2016, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 21, 2016 for Memorial Day weekend.
The Sandpit OHV area opens May 10, 2016.
Google research van staying an extra day on the South Shore

The Google Research Van started off in North Carolina and made its way across the country with eight stops in Atlanta, Colorado, Utah, Reno and, of course, the South Lake Tahoe/Stateline area.
Research was conducted at each stop to determine how people use Google products, and what users are looking for in the future.
Food Bank returns to South Lake Tahoe to deliver groceries

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will bring their mobile food pantry to South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the American Legion located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
One allocation of emergency supplemental groceries will be given per qualifying household. Those who are struggling to make ends meet, live in El Dorado County and meet the State of California Health and Social Services Agency Emergency Food Assistance Program income guidelines may stop by for food distribution. A very energetic and outgoing volunteer team from Vail Resort’s Retail Group joined the Bread & Broth volunteers to donate their time to serve the April 11 evening dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall. The 2016 construction season in the Tahoe Basin will get under way next week with work resuming on a multi-year State Highway 89 project, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today.
The $70.1 million water-quality improvement project is building new drainage facilities to collect and treat stormwater runoff, adding curbs and gutters, widening the highway and repaving an eight-mile section of Highway 89 between Tahoma and Tahoe City. Work this season will focus on the remaining four miles of the project between Eagle Rock and Granlibakken Road.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work is set to resume on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.
