Tahoe Warm Room holding Open House

In their first six weeks of operation, the Tahoe Warm Room had over 60 different people usig their overnight facilities to stay out of the cold weather. Two families also stopped by to get a one-time voucher for a motel room. Over 100 volunteers have already been trained to work at the warm room.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of the Warm Room on Friday, December 18, 2015. They have 20 cots with blankets, hot drinks and clothing for their guests.

Vacation home rental ordinance on the South Lake Tahoe City Council agenda

There are proposed amendments to the South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rental ordinance, ones that came about because of feedback from VHR permit applicants and those enforcing the ordinance.

The most recent VHR ordinance change took effect on October 1, 2015. Since then, there have been over 300 inspections scheduled, including new homes and renewals.

According to Amanda Nolan, the City's VHR Clerk, many of the properties inspected so far have required owners to make corrections to address inspection requirements.

The October 1, 2015 ordinance called for:

Cave Rock tunnel to be extended 60 feet this summer

The westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance will get a makeover this summer, one that will stop rocks from falling onto Highway 50, add lighting to the inside of the tunnel as well as adding water quality improvements.

Devin Cartwright, Supervisor with the Nevada Department of Transportation's Roadway Design Division, spoke to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association Thursday, giving them a overview of the project that will bring with it one lane of traffic in each direction, causing some traffic delays, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week from May to October, 2016.

Barton Health joins successful, cutting-edge federal initiative

Barton Health was selected as one of 100 new Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), providing Medicare beneficiaries with access to high-quality, coordinated care across the United States, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced. That brings the total to 434 Shared Savings Program ACOs serving over 7.7 million beneficiaries.

Public gets chance to ask questions about US50 Revitalization project

The public once again had the opportunity to participate in the planning of the US50/South Shore Revitalization plan (also known as the Loop Road) during a meeting held at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday evening. About 100 people took advantage of having the opportunity.

A panel made up of three representatives from the project, Tahoe Transportation District's Carl Hasty and Russell Nygaard, and the Project Manager Mark Rayback from Woods Rodgers.

Whittell High senior chosen to be student delegate in Washington

Nevada Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller have announced that Katherine "Kate" Krolicki has been chosen to be one of 104 student delegates who will be attending the 54th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C.

"I never thought it'd happen," Krolick said of her being selected. "It's right up my alley and I am so excited to go back to Washington."

The Whittell High School senior has worked in Washington, D.C. twice, once as page for Senator Reid in 2014, and as Senator Heller's intern in 2015.

South Lake Tahoe man injured after being hit by car Tuesday night

A 52-year-old man from South Lake Tahoe was hit by a car after attempting to cross Highway 50 near the intersection with Heavenly Village Way on Tuesday, February 9. The unidentified man was not in a crosswalk and was crossing the street when traffic had a green light.

A 69-year-old Carson City man had just passed through the intersection when he struck the pedestrian.

The South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments both responded after getting a 911 call of a pedestrian versus vehicle accident at 8:26 p.m.

Tahoe Big Year in Photos at SLT Library

Local birders, Bob and Jenny Sweatt, spent the entire year of 2015 searching the basin for as many species of birds as they could find through Tahoe Institute for Natural Science's competition entitled "Tahoe Big Year". The Big Year celebrates the hundreds of bird species that make the Tahoe region their home all year-round, during summer or winter, or while passing through to other destinations. The Sweatts documented their award-winning discoveries with amazing photographs.

Dangberg Ranch Shared at the SLT Library

Nine South Tahoe High students in national art contest

What do Stephen King and Andy Warhol have in common with 13 students from South Tahoe High?

They all made it to the finals of the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Warhol and King went on the win the national top prize, along with author Joyce Carol Oates and designer Zac Posen.

Vaping becoming an issue in South Lake Tahoe schools

South Tahoe High's Principal Chad Houck made a phone call to parents last week, warning them of the increased use (and subsequent detection) among teens of what is known as "vaping."

Vaping is to "inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device." The devices are vaporizers, and what goes inside them became popular as a way to cut back on smoking cigarettes starting in 2007, but a 2014 Science News study showed that vaping did not boost quit rates.

Former El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy pleads guilty to drug trafficking

Mark Zlendick, the former El Dorado County sheriff's deputy who was arrested in May, 2015 on drug charges, pleaded guilty to one charge of drug trafficking Tuesday, February 9.

Pet of the Week: Samson

The South Lake Tahoe Pet of the Week is Samson, a one-year-old Shar Pei mix. He likes other dogs and has lived with children.

Samson is housetrained and very sweet. He prefers a home with another dog since he came into the shelter with two other dogs when his owner became homeless.

Higgs boson and gravity to be topic at LTCC physics talk

“Recent Discoveries on the Frontiers of Science: Higgs boson & Gravitational Waves” is the topic at the next free community event at Lake Tahoe Community College on Tuesday, February 16 at 6:00 p.m.

While the topic may seem heavy, Dr. James Brau will explain the recent discoveries in physics in easy-to-understand terms.

Record temperatures forecast for South Lake Tahoe

With a snowpack 130% of average, the warm temperatures which are forecast this week in South Lake Tahoe aren't worrying those watching the drought situation, yet.

A high pressure system over the west coast will bring record, or near record, temperatures up and down the coast with Sacramento in the 70s and Los Angeles near 90. Reno will be in the 60s.

The long range forecast from accuweather.com calls for wet weather back again soon. One system next week could bring rain, but stronger chances of rain and snow over the last two weeks of the month.

Community forum in South Lake Tahoe to discuss the "Loop Road" project

A different kind of presentation will be made on the US50/South Shore Revitalization Project this week, one that will include a question and answer period and not just the open house atmosphere of recent Tahoe Transportation District meetings on the project. For the past several years, TTD has been holding public meetings and talking with the community shareholders in order to formulate the best plan for the future of Highway 50 through the Stateline portion of South Lake Tahoe, a plan initiated in 1980.

South Tahoe High plans to add Strength and Conditioning Center

South Tahoe High may soon have a new Strength and Condition Center, and the public can make donations to have their name put on the project.

The Sports Medicine program at the school was developed to help train students to assist injured students, and the new plan at the school is being designed to prevent injuries to the student athlete.

Hwy 89 road construction by Fanny Bridge may cause delays

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be performing grinding and paving work on sections of State Highway 89 in the Tahoe City area the next three days.

The work will take place from Blackwood Creek Road to and including the Truckee River (“Fanny”) Bridge in Tahoe City. It’s scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 9-11 and will require one-way traffic control.

Man allegedly pours gasoline on girlfriend, sets her on fire

A Cameron Park, Calif., man was arrested late Thursday night after allegedly pouring gasoline on his girlfriend, then setting her on fire during the course of a domestic argument.

On February 4, deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to several 911 calls reporting a woman screaming in the 2700 block of La Crescenta Drive in Cameron Park.

When deputies arrived they found a woman with serious burns to her lower body. She was transported to an emergency room burn unit for treatment.

Pedestrian dies in Washoe Valley accident

An 18-year-old Carson City, Nev., man died early Monday morning after being struck by a car as he was walking on IR-580 in the Washoe Valley.

Just after 1:07 a.m. on February 8, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene just north of the Bellevue Road overpass. Their investigation indicates that Chile Bartels was walking northbound in the slow lane of the highway when a car driven by 42-year-old Sparks resident James Dolan hit Bartels.

Dolan pulled over and parked according to the NHP.

Prescribed burns to continue on Lake Tahoe East Shore

There are two scheduled prescribed fire operations in the Lake Tahoe Basin this week in the areas of Logan Shoals Vista Point and Camp Galilee near Highway 50 on the East Shore.

At the Logan Creek Overlook there are 15 acres of hand piles being burned, with an ignition date of February 8 and will continue as conditions allow. Smoke should travel in a north to northeast direction.

Dr. James Tarwater, Superintendent of Lake Tahoe Unified Schools, will provide an overview of student data at the next LTUSD School Board meeting on Tuesday, February 9.

Ross stores to raise money for Boys & Girls Club

Between February 7 and 21, Ross Dress for Less stores across the country will be raising money for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and this includes the local South Lake Tahoe store.

Ross will invite their customers to donate at the register to support the youth organization.

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe will receive 80 percent of the funds raised locally, with the remaining 20 percent going to the national organization.

With a minimum $5 donation there will be a special Boys & Girls Club wristband given, while supplies last.

St. Theresa Catholic Church holding 22nd annual Crab Dinner

It's always a sign of crab season when the St. Theresa Catholic Church holds their annual crab dinner in South Lake Tahoe. This year marks the 22nd year they've held the fundraiser.

This year, the dinner will be held on Friday, February 12. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. with their famous dessert auction at 7:45 p.m.

Tickets are $45 in advance or $50 at the door. Tickets are being sold at the Rectory Office located at 1041 Lyons Ave. and at the Religious Education Office at 1081 Lyons Ave., both in South Lake Tahoe. Must be at least 21 to attend.

Plenty of sunshine this week in South Lake Tahoe

Spring-like forecast for the Lake Tahoe basin this week with a chance of precipitation over the weekend. It's going to be a warm week ahead!

Temperatures will be close to record highs and well above seasonal averages. Periods of warmth in the middle of winter are not uncommon for the Sierra and Western Nevada.

In the long-range forecast, temperatures will trend back to colder and protect the snowpack.

14 car pile-up sends 1 to hospital and closes Highway 88 for three hours

A series of five collisions occurred on Highway 88 on the morning of Saturday, February 6, 2016 near the Kirkwood Inn, injuring two and sending one to the hospital.

The collisions were caused by multiple drivers traveling at unsafe speeds for the conditions and following too close to other vehicles according to the California Highway Patrol.

"Slow and Steady Wins the Race couldn't be more true this Saturday morning," the South Lake Tahoe office of the California Highway Patrol said in a statement. "You can't be the first on the mountain if you don't make it there."

South Tahoe Vikings win a thriller after double overtime

There was excitement on the hill Saturday afternoon as the South Tahoe Vikings beat the Sparks Railroaders in double-overtime, 57-55.

Tommy Cefalu hit two free throws as time ran out to seal the deal for South Tahoe.

It was "Senior Day," a day where all senior basketball players, cheerleaders and dance team members were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

There is no box score available at this time.

Large boulder in roadway at Cave Rock; Down to one lane of traffic

8:15 p.m. update: Highway 50 through Cave Rock is now open and clear. All rocks have been cleared away.

A large boulder rolled onto Highway 50 Saturday evening on the Lake Tahoe east shore, closing one eastbound lane of traffic on the west side of the Cave Rock tunnel.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, just after 6:00 p.m., several rocks fell onto the roadway, the largest too heavy to be moved by one of their patrol cars. They are now waiting for a bulldozer to clear the roadway.

NHP estimates for all to be cleared by 9:15 p.m.

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Teams end regular season at the top

The regular season is over for the seven high schools that make up the Tahoe Basin Ski League, and South Tahoe High took overall first place.

The Boys Team ended the season in first, the Girls Team in second, giving STHS enough points for the overall title.

Whittell High School boys ended the season in fifth, girls in sixth, with an overall sixth place.

Nine tons of patching used on South Lake Tahoe roads so far this winter

We've all seen them, or driven through them. They are a sure sign of winter, filling with water at every storm. They are small, they are large, and in some states they joke they are big enough they can swallow a small car.

University Center at LTCC ready to break ground in Spring of 2017

Long the dream of many in South Lake Tahoe, a four-year educational opportunity is on target to break ground in the spring of 2017 on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Community College. The Lisa and Robert Maloff University Center will then be built and open in the fall of 2018.
