Prescribed burns continuing in Lake Tahoe basin

Lake Valley and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks and the U.S Forest Service have plans to continue widespread prescribed fire operations beginning February 1.

Lake Valley operations: 50 acres northeast of Lake Tahoe Airport off of Barbara Avenue. Planned ignition February 3. 10 days of burn down time. Smoke expected to travel southwest.

Malcolm C. Pribyl 1946-2016

Former resident of South Lake Tahoe, Malcolm Pribyl, passed away at the age of 69 on January 19, 2016.

The long time local had recently moved to the Sacramento area due to illness.

Malcolm graduated from Tracy High School and U.C. Davis. Following completion of his military service, Malcolm moved to the South Shore where he worked at Sahara Tahoe.

He owned Malcolm C Pribyl Insurance Agents And Services which operated for years on Ski Run Blvd, after which he operated out of his home on the meadow near the college.

Maddie Bowman wins gold; Jamie Anderson silver in XGames

All three runs for South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman in the Women's Ski SuperPipe X Games today beat all competitors on the course, earning her a fourth straight gold medal in the event. The 22-year-old Olympic gold medalist has also won a silver and bronze in the X Games.

Bowman scored a 85.33 on her first run Friday, followed by a 87.33 and 89.00. Second place finisher Ayana Onozuka of Japan ended up with a high run of 85.00. Bronze medalist Annalisa Drew of the USA had an 83.00.

While vacation rental scams are nothing new in South Lake Tahoe, law enforcement has seen an increase in their numbers.

December's gaming figures released: South Shore casinos show gain

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of December, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $17,950,675 which is 12.56 percent up from the same period in 2014.

For the fiscal year, the South Shore is still below the previous year by 8.30 percent.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, Stateline casinos led all others with gains for the month. The biggest percentage loss was experienced in small, non-Reno, Sparks, North Lake Tahoe casinos in Washoe County which saw income from gaming down 15.74 percent.

Contestants for Dancing With the Tahoe Stars announced

The next cast for the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars has been announced, and the list contains ten South Lake Tahoe business owners, educators, police sergeant, and other well known locals.

Professional dancers will be working with the "celebrities" to teach them each a dance they'll bring to the MontBleu stage on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

The Stars:

Dr. Kelly Shanahan will be teamed up with Rainer Herm to dance Disco.
Iris Kahm is teamed up with Jorge Favio Orozco to dance Salsa.

Ponderosa High School coach arrested for inappropriate relations with students

The Ponderosa High School water polo coach was arrested by the El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies on Tuesday, January 26 on charges of sex with a minor with the intent of committing sexual acts and possession of child pornography.

Shane O’Rourke, 22, was arrested after the school's resource office obtained information that a coach at the school was possibly involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student. An investigation conducted with EDSO investigators determined O'Rourke had two inappropriate sexual relations with students.

Warren Miller's "Chasing Shadows" showing at South Tahoe High theater

"Chasing Shadows," the most recent Warren Miller ski film will be shown at the theater at South Tahoe High on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Besides the movie there will also be a silent auction featuring custom skis, a hotel stay, ski boots, Sierra-at-Tahoe lift tickets and STHS Alpine Ski Team sweatshirts. The public is invited and tickets are $15.00 per person.

The epic ski movie showing is a fundraiser for the Tahoe Basin Ski League leading STHS Vikings. There will also be ski industry vendors in the lobby prior to the movie to talk to the public.

Sierra snowpack is faring better than any January since 2011

It is still too early to know whether enough precipitation will have fallen by the end of winter's wet season to significantly impact the drought, but, snowpack and reservoir storage has benefited from recent storms.

Officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be making their monthly snowpack measurement near Sierra-at-Tahoe on Tuesday, February 2, but electronic readings taken on January 28 show the snowpack is at 116 percent of average. The statewide water content of 18.7 inches is greater now than on any January 26 since 2011.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule

Lake Tahoe will be the scene of both Amgen Tour of California's men's and women's races in May of 2016, and the routes announced Thursday show cyclists will ride into the Tahoe Basin from Kirkwood and Hope Valley, circle the lake, ride up the mountains leading to the Heavenly Mountain Resort and through South Lake Tahoe.

Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe by putting their strength and muscle power to the test as they climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra on Thursday, May 19.

Entrepreneurs Assembly

Writer in the Woods: Rebecca Makkai

Fiction writer Rebecca Makkai will visit SNC Tahoe February 12 and 13 as part of SNC Tahoe's Writers in the Woods program. This long-standing literary speaker series brings well-known poets and writers from all over the country to the campus for intimate readings and workshops, where audience members can meet and exchange ideas with the guest writers.

Readings are held Friday evenings from 7 – 9pm. They are free and open to the public.

Workshops are held Saturday mornings from 9am – noon. They can be taken for credit and are free to students, $50 for community members

Rain and up to a foot of new snow expected in Lake Tahoe Basin

A new winter storm along with an atmospheric river will impact the Sierra and western Nevada starting Friday and through the weekend.

The National Weather Service is anticipating travel impacts due to rain, snow, and gusty winds for the entire weekend. Precipitation will begin in northeast California and the Sierra early Friday with very high snow levels and accumulating snow mainly above 8000 feet. Snow levels will begin to drop late Friday into early Saturday allowing accumulations down to near 4500 to 5000 feet.

Al Tahoe Elementary could reopen if California bond measure passes

Closed due to declining enrollment since June of 2004, Al Tahoe Elementary School could reopen if a $9 billion bond measure passes in California this November. There is now an increase in enrollment in grades K-5 in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, with an average grade size of 300, compared to an average of 274 students in grades 6-12. Its because of a growing lower grade population and a movement towards children starting school at the age of 3 that Al Tahoe would be used to house the younger students.

El Dorado County DA's "Most Wanted Wednesday"

El Dorado County District Attorney's Office has been having "Most Wanted Wednesdays" for months, and taking the story to social media has proven very beneficial with an 80% success rate in capturing the criminals.

'Pizza for Pups' fundraiser tonight in South Lake Tahoe

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe (ACT) is holding a fundraiser in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, January 27 to raise money for their spay-neuter program and the animal shelter in Meyers.

Pizza for Pups will be held at Blue Dog Pizza (Midtown location on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sierra Blvd). For a $10 donation, participants will enjoy Blue Dog's wonderful pizza with the proceeds going to ACT. The rest of Blue Dog's menu will be available for purchase, also, including salads, beer, and wine. Seatings will be at 6:00 p.m and 7:00 p.m.

SLEDNET investigates sex trafficking ring in South Lake Tahoe; Three arrested

Complaints of prostitution in South Lake Tahoe led to the arrest of three people on Thursday, January 21, 2016 after an investigation by the South Lake El Dorado Narcotics Enforcement Team (SLEDNET).

Law enforcement has been investigating complaints of prostitution, focused on individuals who conduct human trafficking through advertisements for escort services placed on websites such as www.backpage.com.

Open house on Tuesday for US50/South Shore Revitalization Project

The community is invited to see the plans for the US50/South Shore Revitalization Plan for the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline areas in an open house on Tuesday, January 26 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

Tahoe Transportation District has been meeting with the public over several years to get opinions, input and have open discussion about the proposed plan (also know as Loop Road) that would take Highway 50 behind Raley's and the Heavenly Village. The idea is to make the area more walking and biking friendly with safer routes and less vehicle traffic.

South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Team leading Tahoe Basin Ski League

The ski race season is in full swing for area high schools, with five races already completed. After Monday's slalom race at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Tahoe High leads the Tahoe Basin Ski League with four girls and four boys in the top ten in their respective divisions.

Whittell High School's Payton Norton leads all boys in the league with his teammate Gunnar Barnwell currently in 10th place.

Last week we had the opportunity to attend a field trip at Heavenly Mountain Resort. Thanks to a grant written by STEEC member, Devin Middlebrook (TRPA Environmental Education Specialist), EPIC Promise (through Vail Resorts – Heavenly) covered the cost of transportation, lift tickets for the tram ride, use of snowshoes, and presenters. The day was well planned and all went smoothly.

We learned much about our environment including local animals, avalanche safety and snowmaking. And luckily we enjoyed a “blue bird” day at the top of the tram!

Fear of freezing to death prompts two criminals to call 911

Two men trying to evade arrest on January 22, ended up calling 911 and telling officers they were freezing to death and in fear of dying.

Tristen Crossland and Derek Dion were the lone occupants of a car that was pulled over by a California Fish and Wildlife officer on the morning of Friday, January 22, near Highway 50 and Wrights Lake Road when they decided to flee on foot.

Pet of the Week: Lyric

This week's Pet of the Week is Lyric, a special 11-month-old pit who is "super friendly and super excited."

Lyric is a good girl who is house trained. She just needs some training to curb her excited behavior. The Lake Tahoe Humane Society will provide a free private training lesson with Good Dog Training to the family that gives Lyric her forever home.

Improv student workshop and fundraiser for Tahoe Arts Project

Land transfer between City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County getting closer

There are many parcels of land in South Lake Tahoe owned by El Dorado County that the City would like to have, and talks between the two are getting closer to making the land transfer a reality.

Free sand bags available for South Lake Tahoe residents

With the rainy weather that hit South Lake Tahoe recently, many residents were finding themselves with small flooding issues around their homes and garages.

Sand bags are available, free of charge and year-round, from the City of South Lake Tahoe at the City’s Streets and Snow Removal Yard located at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. Their operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For the past 5 years, the Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra has been sponsoring Bread & Broth “Adopt A day of Nourishment” on the second Monday in the month of January. True to form, on January 11, Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra members Jan Lynds, Pat Frega and Bob “Snow Bum” Fleischer were there pitching in at B&B’s evening dinner. The Kiwanis Club’s annual sponsorship is always appreciated by B&B and their volunteers always look forward to working with our “repeat” sponsor volunteers.
