Jim Nichols is officially not a Douglas County employee beginning January 29, 2016. The Board of County Commissioners approved a voluntary separation agreement Thursday between the county and Nichols, their County Manager.

Nichols and the County came to a mutual agreement that he would leave his position. During the on January 21, the Commissioners reiterated the fact that Nichols was not fired, nor did he quit. Nichols will be receiving a check for more than $115,000, the equivalent of six months pay plus sick pay and vacation pay.

Men, women and children are invited to take part in the upcoming One Billion Rising flashmob which will be held in South Lake Tahoe on February 14, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

One Billion Rising is an international campaign launched to end domestic violence. Staggering statistics show that one in three women on earth will be beaten or raped during their lifetime, so with the world's population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

Just curious, my cat has started sticking his tongue out, I mean a lot. He will just sit and stick his tongue out at me. It’s cute but should I be concerned?

Dear Arnold.

I’m actually glad you brought this up. While yes it’s cute, I had a kitty with this habit. While some cats just do this for no apparent reason my concern with your kitty is that it is new behavior. If you cat was doing this its whole life and your veterinarian had seen no signs of trouble then I would say you just have a silly kitty.

Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 4 p.m. today until 4 p.m. Saturday, and Lake Wind Advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. Saturday.

A new storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, making its first push into Northern California and Nevada with rain and snow on Friday. Even though the storm should be a moderate sized one, significant shadowing will keep the precipitation along the Sierra crest westward, with little if any spillover from Lake Tahoe eastward.

South Tahoe High and Whittell High athletes have seen wins this week, both on the court and on the slopes and South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman is at Mammoth Mountain today for the first stop for the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup 2016.

South Tahoe High's varsity basketball teams won Wednesday night in Sparks. The boys beat the Railroaders 77-63 while the girls handled their opponent, winning the game by a score of 54-34.

Steve Hemphill has returned to Sierra-at-Tahoe, this time as their Director of Marketing.

Hemphill left his position as the resort's Communications Manager to work at K2 Sports as their Digital and Social Manager. While at K2, Hemphill helped grow digital presence and executed a wide variety of global digital campaigns. Hemphill has also worked at Freeskier Magazine where he was an assistant editor. In 2014, Hemphill was recognized by Ski Area Management Magazine as a top individual in the snow sports industry under 30 years of age.

The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act of 2015, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, passed the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Wednesday.

The legislation, created alongside senators Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., Harry Reid, D-Nevada and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., provides federal, state, and local partners important tools to reduce wildfire threats, improve water clarity, jumpstart innovative infrastructure projects, and combat invasive species.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series welcomes novelist Rebecca Makkai on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room inside the library building. Makkai will read selections from her work, answer audience questions, and sign copies of her books, which will be available for sale. This event is free and open to the public.

Lisa Utzig Schager from Wildwood DIY Boutique and Aubrey Pierce from Knits & Knots will be celebrating a dual ribbon-cutting event with the Tahoe Chamber on Friday, January 22 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the stores, located at 989 Tallac Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. The date will mark Wildwood DIY Boutique’s one-year anniversary as well as the grand opening celebration of Knits & Knots.

Know Before You Go, a program to inform outdoor enthusiasts about avalanche safety, will be presented by Sierra Avalanche Center at the next meeting of the Tahoe Area Sierra Club on February 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at Unity at the Lake.

They will cover the basic safety measures for travel in avalanche terrain which is especially important given the recent wet storms.

The Know Before You Go program was created in 2004 to teach people what they need to know to have fun and stay safe in avalanche terrain.

Unity at the Lake is located at 1195 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

The Lake Tahoe Community College Board of Trustees is meeting in closed session tonight to discuss the search for the school's next president following the announcement that Superintendent/President Dr. Kindred Murillo will be leaving her post.

Murillo, who started at the college in July, 2011, requested the Board meet and discuss an exit date for her which would take place sometime in the next 18 months.

During the January 19 meeting, the Board will also discuss a timeline for the process of finding Murillo's replacement.

Dr. Chris Pavich, who was born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, has returned to his hometown to open Kingsbury Chiropractic.

After attending the University of Nevada, Reno and earning his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life West Chiropractic College, Dr. Pavich opened his office located at 276 Kingsbury Grade #1050 in Stateline.

He will be celebrating the new office with a Tahoe Chamber ribbon cutting event on January 28, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. The Grand Opening is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Pavich is the grandson of Sierra Ski Ranch founder Vern Sprock.

Two cars collided on Highway 50 near Glenbrook at 9:40 p.m. Friday, January 16, leaving a Los Angeles man dead.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers investigating the crash say a Silver 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by Carlos Ortega Gomez of Mexico, was traveling eastbound. A white 2014 Subaru Impreza driven by 59-year-old Carson City resident Virgilio Ballesteros was traveling westbound in the slow lane.

The El Dorado County Food Bank will be making their monthly stop in South Lake Tahoe at the American Legion Hall on Wednesday, January 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Residents in need of emergency food supplies can come to the hall, located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Join Tahoe Chamber and its ambassadors at the Members Meet Up Lunch, an intimate networking session exclusive to chamber members. This monthly event offers members the opportunity to introduce themselves and their businesses to a dynamic group of professionals.

Each month Tahoe Chamber will choose a local restaurant to host these networking events. This month's location will be Chimayo Street Grill from noon to 1:00 p.m.

The Tahoe Regional Young Professionals (TRYP) will be holding an open house for South Lake Tahoe non-profits on Wednesday, January 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Blue Angel Cafe. The idea is to be able to invite TRYP members and others to engage and be introduced to the numerous non-profits in the community. Let's bridge the gap between our organizations so we can work together!

As one weather system leaves Lake Tahoe, the next one is waiting off the coast of California and heading to the Sierra overnight. The National Weather Service says upper elevations will see more snow that the past storm, with rain for the valleys. South Lake is at an elevation that rests in between rain and snow.

Most snow impacts will be confined to areas above 7,000 feet, a rain/snow mix around 6500 feet and all rain in lower valley locations will create slick road conditions. The highest elevations can see a foot of snow, with 1 to 4" above 6,500 feet, and one inch around the lake.

This week's Pet of the Week is Harley. he is about two-years-old, gets along with other cats, is good with kids and is a real lap-kitty.

Harley is a "super nice boy and well behaved!"

It's been almost two-and-a-half years since South Lake Tahoe native Mitch Underhill died unexpectedly at the age of 34. The firefighter/paramedic with Lake Valley Fire Protection District was passionate not only about his family and career, but for the mountains and community he left behind.

In his memory, the Mitch Underhill Mountain Fund has been created at Lake Tahoe Community College.

"He was so loved in the community," said his widow Sarah. "He was an inspiration."

Everyone is invited to "Ski with a Ranger" at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, January 22, 2016. The popular program is offered by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

Tours will be held every Monday and Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m., last approximately one-hour and continue through April 1, 2016, weather permitting.

Lake Tahoe Community College faculty member Dr. Walter Morris will give a talk on what science has revealed about exercise during the school's next featured lecture, “Exercise: A Potent Medicine?” on Wednesday, January 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Board/Aspen room.
