El Dorado County BOS appoint interim head of the Community Development Agency

A former member of both the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and California State Assembly has been named the interim director of the El Dorado County Community Development Agency.

At the BOS meeting Tuesday, Roger Niello was appointed to fill the spot vacated when Steve Pedretti left the position for Placer County.

Niello begins his job November 2.

Before he went into public service, Niello managed the Niello Auto Group for
25 years until 1999.

Storm bringing up to 18" of snow at upper elevations of Lake Tahoe

The next storm heading to South Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada is bringing with it much cooler temperatures and snow. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the region from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday for areas above 6,500 feet.

Snow accumulations should be 6" to 18" above 7,000 feet with up to 6" down to 6,500 feet. Up to 2" at lake level are possible.

The snow levels wills tart around the 7,000 ft level, lowersing to 6,000 feet by late Sunday morning.

The Board of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) has announced its position on seven local ballot measures in the City of South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County.

League to Save Lake Tahoe supports new hotel project in Tahoe City

A prime piece of real estate in Tahoe City that was originally built in 1957 for housing during the 1960 Olympics has never lived up to its potential, and is now proposed for destruction to make way for a 118-room hotel.

Sold at the end of 2013, the property known as the Hendrickson Building located at the west end of Tahoe City at 255 North Lake Blvd. is being transformed into the Tahoe City Lodge.

Barton seeks volunteers for advisory panel on hospital experiences

Barton Health is looking for community volunteers to join their Patient Family Advisory Council and share insight about their experience at Barton Memorial Hospital.

The Council’s advisors play an active role in implementing constructive changes to the Hospital’s quality and safety. Any past Barton Hospital patient or family member of a patient can participate.

High winds and wet storm brings snow to Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe residents saw some dusting of snow overnight Sunday and Monday morning. In the last 48 hours, the Lake Tahoe Airport saw wind gusts 40-52 mph.

Chain controls remain this morning on Highway 89 through Christmas Valley and over Luther Pass, as well as I80 from Kingvale to Donner Lake. Chains are required unless driving a 4WD with snow tires.

A wind advisory remains for Lake Tahoe until 11:00 a.m.

Today - Isolated showers before 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 49. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Heavy rain totals with Saturday's storm in the Sierra, more on the way

Since Friday morning, rain has pummeled many areas of the Sierra Nevada. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, South Lake Tahoe had received 2.54" of rain, with more on the way. By Monday morning, a trace of new snow could be seen on the South Shore.

Little Valley Fire is now 55% contained, 3,400 acres burned

10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.

22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

National Parks board member appointed to fill vacant TRPA seat

California Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon has appointed Belinda Valles Faustinos to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board. Her appointment follows the recent resignation of Governing Board member Elizabeth Carmel, a fine art landscape photographer who represented the Speaker’s office on the board for the last three and a half years.

Report: Lake Tahoe faces major challenges due to climate change

The Lake Tahoe Basin saw continued environmental improvement over the last four years, but faces major challenges from climate change, according to a draft 2015 Threshold Evaluation Report released by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).

The report offers a detailed assessment of the health of Lake Tahoe and its treasured natural environment as indicated by 178 threshold standards in nine categories: Air quality, water quality, soil conservation, vegetation, fisheries, wildlife, scenic resources, noise, and recreation.

Undersheriff Randy Peshon reappointed to state Judicial Council

El Dorado County Undersheriff Randy Peshon has been re-appointed to the state's Judicial Council Collaborative Justice Court Advisory Committee after being nominated by Superior Court Judge Suzanne Kingsbury.

Peshon, who once ran the jail in South Lake Tahoe, has served in this capacity for the past three years and will begin a new three year term on November 1.

Fall in Lake Tahoe normally brings with it a myriad of temperatures and conditions, and this year is no different. When Fall starts on Thursday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain, chance of snow above 7,000 feet wind and a high of 55.

County marijuana committee creating policy in case November ballot measure passes

The Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee was created by the El Dorado County Supervisors to address taxation, cultivation, medical marijuana and other issues surrounding the use and distribution of the drug in the county.

Community advocate named Tahoe Chamber Interim CEO

Veteran community advocate Steve Teshara has accepted the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce. Chamber Board Chair Mike McLaughlin announced the Board’s appointment of Teshara in a statement released July 21.

“Our Board is extremely pleased Steve has agreed to step in to support the Chamber’s mission, membership, and community engagement while we seek a new CEO to move the organization into 2017 and beyond,” said McLaughlin. “Steve adds a unique blend of experiences and accomplishments to our dedicated Chamber staff.”

Windy and dry in Lake Tahoe basin and Northern Nevada: Red Flag Warning up

Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada are not alone this weekend as a combination of hot and dry conditions with gusty winds will bring dangerous fire weather conditions to a large portion of the western U.S. Any fire in this region will have the potential to grow rapidly out of control so extreme caution is urged near dry grass and brush. Numerous Red Flag Warnings are in effect from the Sierra Nevada to the High Plains of South Dakota.

Red Flag wind warnings on Tuesday; Cooling temperatures ahead

The post-holiday week starts off with a Lake Wind Advisory on Lake Tahoe and Red Flag Warnings across Western Nevada. Expect winds in South Lake Tahoe to be 5-15 mph during the day and evening, with gusts up to 25 mph.

The Lake Wind Advisory is from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Carson City and Reno winds will be up to 35 mph.

The rest of the week's forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight - Clear, with a low around 47. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

Tuesday - Widespread haze. Sunny, with a high near 75. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Firefighters gain on Trailhead Fire: 50% contained, burns 5,444 acres

8:30 p.m. update 7/4/16: Firefighters working on the Trailhead Fire in El Dorado County gained a lot of ground Monday, getting a containment line around 50 percent of the fire. So far, 5,444 acres have burned.

Wildfire closes Hwy 395 at Lee Vining

9:30 a.m. update 6/26: Firefighters have gained some control of the Marina Fire burning near Mono Lake and the town of Lee Vining. The 758 acre fire is 30 percent contained.

Highway 395 is closed at the town of Lee Vining on the south at the turnoff for Hawthorne, NV (Highway 167) on the north. However, California Highway Patrol is conducting one-way traffic escorts as conditions allow. Mono County Sheriff and Caltrans District 9 have worked tirelessly with CHP to implement this escort.

TRPA launches process to enhance and protect shores of Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and its partners have started work on the Shoreline Plan, a collaborative planning process to enhance recreation and protect Lake Tahoe’s 72 miles of shoreline.

The aim is to strike a balance between recreational access, the many uses along Tahoe’s shores, and environmental protection. An inclusive, open public process will bring in as many voices and viewpoints as possible to represent a wide range of stakeholders in developing new policy and code over the next two years.

Voters to see new tax measures for SLT Recreation Center and roads/equipment

Most people don't like taxes, or having any new ones, but South Lake Tahoe voters will have the choice in November to vote on two ballot measure that would bring about two tax rate hikes, one that only tourists will pay, and another that will be paid for by both locals and tourists.

If passed, the ballot measures will accomplish two things: replace the recreation complex and repair the City's roads and/or replace the aging fleet.

Barton Foundation has $50,000 to give away in grants

The Barton Foundation has $50,000 to give away in grant funding to groups in the South Lake Tahoe area who work to improve community health.

During their annual grant cycles, Barton provides funds to programs and organizations, and this year they will award grants to those who address mental health, substance abuse, and access to healthcare services.

People in South Lake Tahoe woke up to a covering of snow on the ground Thursday morning, and widely scattered light snow showers should continue until 11 p.m. tonight according to the National Weather Service.

There is a lake wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe until 8:00 p.m. Thursday with winds from the southwest 15 to 25 mph, and gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet

Community collaboration helps to change the stigma of mental illness

The third annual Mental Health Forum in South Lake Tahoe today brought together almost 60 people who are dedicated to helping the mental and behavioral health in the community.

Hosted by Barton Health, this year's forum participants shared the progress they've made on strategies for mental health and local service gaps that were generated during the 2015 event.

Jeanne Nelson from the South Lake Tahoe chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) was very pleased with the outcome Thursday.

Preger to Speak About Photographing Burning Man April 5

"From the Lens of Eleanor Preger," is an exhibition at Sierra Nevada College that includes images from Burning Man 2011-15, and the photographer will talk about her art during the closing reception for the show on April 5. Crimson Rose, Burning Man co-founder, and Maria Partridge, Artist Advocate for the Burning Man Foundation, are both expected to make comments during the evening.

Easter Sunday brings with it pleasant temperatures along with a lake wind advisory from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Expect southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Waves on the lake may be 2 to 4 feet with the east and north shore getting the highest ones. Small boats will be prone to capsizing and should remain off the lake until conditions improve.

Things change Sunday night and Monday morning when a slider quickly moves through the Sierra and Western Nevada.

On the agenda are issues related to federal activities in the Lake Tahoe Basin including an update to the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act, review of the environmental improvement plan and discussion on the comittee's future implementation strategy.

Long awaited storm due to hit Lake Tahoe this weekend

A fairly dry February didn't add much needed water to the Sierra snowpack, but a storm system heading to the Lake Tahoe this weekend may help make up the deficit.

Low pressure will brush by the region and produce gusty winds on Tuesday afternoon and evening. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake on Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Southwest winds from 15-25 mph are expected with gusts up to 40 mph.

Last storm helped Lake Tahoe gain 7.89 billion gallons of water; More on the way

The most recent storm to hit the Lake Tahoe basin brought with it more rain than snow, but it allowed the lake to rise .20 feet which equals 7.89 billion gallons of water.

The Truckee River in Reno rose 3.71 feet and Donner Lake added 1.72 feet, or 385 million gallons of water.

Ski areas in the basin all got a boost in snow with Mt. Rose seeing the most at 16 inches. Heavenly added 4" and both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood saw 10" added to their base.
