Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe this week

As one weather system leaves Lake Tahoe, the next one is waiting off the coast of California and heading to the Sierra overnight. The National Weather Service says upper elevations will see more snow that the past storm, with rain for the valleys. South Lake is at an elevation that rests in between rain and snow.

Most snow impacts will be confined to areas above 7,000 feet, a rain/snow mix around 6500 feet and all rain in lower valley locations will create slick road conditions. The highest elevations can see a foot of snow, with 1 to 4" above 6,500 feet, and one inch around the lake.

Winter weather advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Sunday-Monday

The Lake Tahoe Basin will see more rain and snow with the next system moving in Sunday night.

Forecasters have had difficulty nailing down this system as their forecast guidance has been all over the board, according to the National Weather Service. Currently, the main core of moisture and best storm dynamics are expected to be over the southern Cascades of Oregon and the front range of Northern California. Still, decent moisture will stream into the Northern Sierra Sunday afternoon into Monday.

TRPA releases draft active transportation plan for Tahoe

Improving transportation options for bicyclists and pedestrians is one of the most effective strategies to conserve and restore Lake Tahoe’s environment, revitalize the economy, enhance recreation opportunities, and improve public health, according to Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) officials.

Chance of rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe for next week

The snow in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday started almost exactly at the time the winter weather advisory said it would: 2 p.m. The advisory is in effect until 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 15.

Chain controls are up on all mountain roads around Lake Tahoe, and with 3-5" snow expected during the evening, expect them to stay up all night.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Wednesday

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada starting at 4 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2016.

The first storm in potentially a series of them is forecast to impact the area according to NWS in Reno. There is an additional chance for a storm late Thursday and again Saturday, but forecast confidence in these is lower.

Their forecast:

Today - Partly sunny, with a high near 45. Southwest wind around 5 mph.

Tonight - A 20 percent chance of rain after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. South wind 5 to 15 mph.

City looking for Bicycle Advisory Committee members

The South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority (JPA) is seeking applicants to fill the seven open positions on the Bicycle Advisory Committee, as required by Measure R.

Three of the open positions are for two-year terms, and the terms of the other four will expire in January, 2017 at which time four two-year terms will be open.

The Bicycle Advisory Committee expects to continue to have work until the year 2030. If a member of the committee one can expect monthly meetings during their term.

Storm headed to Lake Tahoe; 4-8" of snow expected at lake level

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016.

The National Weather Service changed the storm from a "winter weather warning" to the advisory. Expect snow accumulations of 4-8" at lake level and 8-15" at the upper elevations. The strongest snow is forecast to begin at 4:00 a.m.

There will be some winds associated with this system with south winds gusting to 25 mph in the valleys and gusts of 80-100 on the ridges.

Warm Room opens doors in South Lake Tahoe

We've seen them walking along the streets, sleeping in the forests or hanging outside of an all night market. The faces of South Lake Tahoe's homeless. Winter can be brutal on the homeless in town with below freezing temperatures, snow covered paths and no place to keep warm.

That is, until today.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless opened the doors of their new Warm Room on Friday, ready to take in their first visitors at 7:00 p.m. It is a safe and warm place for people over 18, getting them out of physically harmful conditions.

Help shape the details of South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 project

The Loop Road project in South Lake Tahoe has undergone changes, from being a federally funded project to realign Highway 50 to evolving into a community development project that promises to beautify, provide new gateways and gathering places. Without this plan being a federal project allows local control and development.

The revamped US Highway 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project will be presented to the community during an open house on Tuesday, December 1 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Wind and snow in forecast for the weekend in South Lake Tahoe

This just in from the National Weather Service in Reno: The next storm rolls into the Sierra late Saturday night through Sunday evening. Sunday will begin breezy, and a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe. This system will move through the region more quickly than the last storm. Travel impacts can be expected in the Sierra from western Lassen County through the Tahoe Basin into Mono County.

Snow, wind and sunshine all in the forecast for South Lake Tahoe

There is a lake wind advisory in South Lake Tahoe Sunday with waves two to four feet expected until 7 p.m., with the biggest wave action on the east and northeast shores. Winds will be from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

The winds are in front of a fast moving low pressure system that will move across the Sierra and Western Nevada through Monday. It brings with it cold and snow showers starting on Sunday night.

Forecast: Lake Tahoe shouldn't expect benefit of a strong El Niño

A strong El Niño is predicted to help ease drought conditions in some, but not all of California. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) released their latest seasonal weather assessment on Thursday, and news isn't very good for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

15-year-long partnership keeps Tahoe Yellow Cress off endangered species list

Successful conservation actions from a collaborative Lake Tahoe partnership spanning the past 15 years have helped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decide today that Tahoe yellow cress (Rorippa subumbellata), a flowering perennial plant in the mustard family found only along the lake’s sandy shoreline, does not warrant federal protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Meeting the aquatic invasive species challenge at Tahoe

Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are one of the most serious challenges facing Lake Tahoe. They continuously threaten to damage its unique environment and famed water clarity and degrade the world-class recreational experiences residents and millions of visitors enjoy each year.

Fortunately, Tahoe is a national leader in fighting AIS, with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and 40 public and private partners working to prevent, detect, and remove harmful infestations.

Butte Fire: Two Fatalities Confirmed, Containment Grows To 47 Percent

6:47 p.m. - Cal Fire says containment on the Butte Fire has grown to 47 percent, with acreage burned holding at 71,780 acres.

Damage assessment shows 233 residences, 175 outbuildings and 15 other structures burned in the fire, with 6,000 additional structures still threatened.

Officials ask that area residents remain vigilant, as the fire is still active in many areas. They also ask for people to assist by calling the appropriate authorities for specific situations:

Butte Fire is 40% contained; 71,780 acres burned

6:15 p.m. update 9/15/15:

New evacuation advisories were put up at the scene of the large Butte Fire on Tuesday.

Walker Fire burns 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained

8 p.m. update 8/18/15:

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.

There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.

235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.

5 p.m. Update:

Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe region Thursday

Expect high winds and waves up to four feet on Thursday as a low pressure weather system drops from the Pacific Coast and passes through the Lake Tahoe basin. Winds will be 15-20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

With an increase in winds also comes an increase in fire dangers.

Dry condition paired with gusty winds can cause fires to get large before responders can get to them.

The Red Flag warning is from August 13 at 2 p.m. to August 14 at 11 a.m.
The Lake Wind Advisory lasts from August 13 at 2 p.m. to August 14 at 5 p.m.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary gives out community awards

Each year the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club holds their signature fundraiser, the St. Patrick's Day Celebration, and because of this they are able to give away tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants and gifts to members of the community.

On Friday, local non-profits were handed the fruits of the Rotarian's labor at their annual community donation day.

Four firefighters burned while on the Lowell Fire; Willow Fire growing

Two fires, starting within minutes of each other on Saturday, are currently burning out of control in the Sierra Nevada.

9:30 p.m. update 7/26/15:

The Lowell Fire burning near the town of Alta off of I-80 in the Sierras has burned 1,500 acres and is now 15% contained.

Early this evening, two CAL FIRE and two U.S. Forest Service firefighters suffered burn injuries while battling the Lowell Fire in Nevada County. The firefighters were airlifted from the fire and transported to UC Davis Burn Center in Sacramento.

Washington Fire now 56% contained; 17,787 acres burned

6:00 p.m. update 6/29/15

Firefighters made a lot of progress on the fire lines at the Washington Fire south of Markleeville on Monday, gaining containment of 56% of the perimeter. So far, 17,787 acres have burned.

The lightning caused fire grew quickly a week ago, from 30 acres on June 19 to 6,500 acres by June 21.

At one time, over 1,100 fire personnel were working on suppression of the fire. Those numbers were reduced today to 860 as containment grew.

Dense Smoke Advisory issued for area south of Minden/Gardnerville

The National Weather Service has issued a dense smoke advisory for areas downwind of the ‪Washington Fire burning a few miles south of Markleville.

Dense smoke is expected in Smith Valley, Mason Valley, and Antelope Valley. Other areas may also be impacted by smoke.

The warning is in effect until 5 a.m. Monday. Visibility is at 1/2 mile to 1 mile.

Cycling celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

Cycling in South Lake Tahoe was the focus of the second Annual Cycle Celebration on Saturday. Kids both young and old were at the Heavenly Village to participate in a Bike Parade, Bike Rodeo, Bike Tune-Up station and informational booths.

The celebration wrapped up the two-week long Tahoe Bike Challenge where hundreds of people got out of their cars and biked to school, work and for play.

During Saturday's activities, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition honored the Town of Truckee and Karen & Pete Fink for their contributions to cycling in the region.

Lightening caused Northern California fire spreads to 1,480 acres

Winds hampered firefighting efforts at the lightening caused Saddle Fire on Saturday. As of 6 p.m., the fire has burned 1,480 acres in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, halfway between Redding and Eureka, California.

866 personnel are fighting the fire which is now 15% contained.

Firefighters have been protecting the homes along County Road 311, and as of June 13, no structures have been burned.

Challenges to firefighters include a heavy component of dead and down vegetation (from previous fires), hot, dry conditions, steep terrain, and ongoing drought.

Mental health and substance abuse top health concerns in South Lake Tahoe

The community has undergone a complete physical and the results are in. Based on the 2015 Community Health Needs Assessment, mental health and substance abuse remain top health concerns in the area.

Barton Health conducted its second Community Health Needs Assessment to identify unmet needs within the community. After identifying these needs, Barton will work with representatives from organizations who provide services for the medically underserved to offer recommendations and a collaborative action plan focused on positively impacting the community’s health.

Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee to meet in South Lake Tahoe

The Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee (LTFAC) is scheduled to meet from 9 a.m. to noon, June 22, 2015, at the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit Forest Supervisor’s office, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96150. LTFAC will address issues related to federal activities at Lake Tahoe.

Items on the agenda include an overview of committee history, review of committee charter, update on status of Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, and discussion of Committee’s future strategy.

Homeless in High School

Homelessness has many faces. Some are old, some are young. It affects all races, religions, and sexes. It can be triggered by a poor economy, inconsistent work, a medical catastrophe, and death of a family member. In the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), there are 246 homeless students (1).

I recently sat down with one of those students to understand a day in the life of a homeless student.

Is that snow in the Lake Tahoe forecast?

There is more snow in the forecast for the Sierra for elevations above 7,000 ft Thursday through Friday.

The National Weather Service in Reno says to expect winter driving conditions and possible chain controls over Sierra passes, especially at night or during heavier snow showers. Higher elevation routes including Sonora, Tioga, Ebbetts and Monitor passes may be closed later this week and possibly into the weekend.

Snow falling in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday; 71 degrees by Tuesday

Mother Nature brought several inches of snow to South Lake Tahoe overnight, surprising many who have learned to doubt the forecast this winter.

A winter weather advisory is in place for South Lake Tahoe until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Snow should subside by 11 a.m. and then rain takes its place. Expect a high of 41 and low of 27, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood closed their ski operations last weekend, Sierra-at-Tahoe a few weeks before that.

Opening Day for South Tahoe Little League Saturday

An Opening Day celebration is planned at the South Tahoe Little League Complex this Saturday, April 25th. A parade and ribbon cutting ceremony are planned prior to the start of scheduled games. The parade will start on the street next to the South Tahoe Middle School tennis courts at 9:00 a.m. with a planned parade path to follow Lyons Avenue to Rufus Allen, and into the major’s field by way of the snack shack entrance. Parking will not be available at South Tahoe Middle School due to the eWaste collection event. Parking is available along Rufus Allen Blvd.

Windy conditions & cooler temperatures forecast for Lake Tahoe

There will be a cold front moving into the Lake Tahoe and western Nevada area late Monday night into Tuesday morning. The front is bringing with it strong winds and much colder temperatures, but no rain or snow.

Southwest winds from 25 mph to 40 mph are expected with gusts up to 60 mph possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a lake wind advisory for Lake Tahoe which will be in effect from 2 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday. Wave heights will be from 2' to 5' with the highest waves Monday night and early Tuesday morning from mid-lake to the north and east shores.
