Bank of the West temporarily closed due to staffing shortage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bank of the West's South Lake Tahoe branch has had to close temporarily due to a staffing shortage. A representative at the bank's branch in Carson City said it is a COVID-related closure and some staff has been in quarantine as they await test results. This has been a problem at many area banks since the pandemic started.

Once staff can be assembled to reopen safely, expect the doors to the branch at 2161 Lake Tahoe Boulevard to open once again.

Tahoe Best in the Basin Award winners announced

Seven outstanding restoration, sustainability, and construction projects were recognized as recipients of Best in the Basin awards by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) during an online meeting of the agency’s Governing Board. The projects and programs each exhibit outstanding planning and execution and lead the way in environmental stewardship in the Lake Tahoe Region, according to the agency.

New electric vehicle charging stations at Bank of America in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Electric vehicle owners can now charge their cars for free at Bank of America’s South Lake Tahoe branch. Three new charging stations have been installed at the bank, located at 3344 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

They have a range in power from 150 kilowatt (kW) to 350kW and were installed through the bank's partnership with Electrify America.

"Bank of America is committed to helping accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and is working to reduce its own operational footprint," a bank representative said in a press release.

Modified and successful Breakfast with Santa held at Heavenly Village

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With most of the Heavenly Holidays events canceled at the Heavenly Village this year, one event was still able to be held - the annual Breakfast with Santa.

The breakfast, moved outside this year due to COVID-19, was held each Saturday in December with the guest stars, Santa and Mrs. Claus. A limited number of tickets were available and each breakfast sold out.

There were 265 reports of domestic violence in South Lake Tahoe, including domestic disturbance, domestic battery, and domestic assault from January 1, 2019, until October 9, 2020. There are many forms of abuse, besides physical assault, that constitute domestic violence.

Robbery at South Lake Tahoe El Dorado Savings

5:00PM Update: This afternoon South Lake Tahoe Police responded to a bank robbery at El Dorado Savings Bank at the “Y.”

Detectives are currently working the case and asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspect. The suspect’s race or gender are unknown but they were wearing a grey hoodie, black pants and high-top sneakers, standing at approximately 6 feet tall.

Fundraising underway for South Lake Tahoe man with Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma

Memorial unveiled during commemorative run/walk for victims of 2011 Carson City IHOP shooting

The Nevada National Guard and Carson City community members took part in a memorial run on Sunday to commemorate the victims of the September 6, 2011 shooting at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP). Sales of flavored tobaccos and vape juices banned in California

Blue Raz Cotton Candy, Peach Green Tea, Pink Spot and Frozen Lime Drop are just a few of the names of flavored tobacco that will no longer be allowed on the shelves in California after Governor Newsom signed SB793 Friday. The bill was created to stop kids from getting addicted to tobacco and vaping and is an addition to existing law, the Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement (STAKE) Act.

The bill takes effect Jan. 1, 2021.

The ban includes the sale of everything from menthol cigarettes to e-cigarette flavors, including pods for vape pens, tank-based systems, and chewing tobacco.

Volunteers needed for El Dorado County Food Bank giveaway in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Food Bank of El Dorado County is looking for volunteers to help distribute food to individuals in need on August 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in South Lake Tahoe.

Distribution will be located at St.Theresa's Catholic Church parking lots located at 1041 Lyons Avenue. Volunteers will be bagging up fresh produce and pushing shopping carts full of food to the recipient's vehicles.

With mural project canceled, Leadership Lake Tahoe gives back to the community

Leadership Lake Tahoe is a ten-month-long course held every two years on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. It began in 2003 with a mission to identify and develop current and future leaders through a comprehensive program designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the issues and challenges facing our community. At the beginning, the program was sponsored by the Tahoe Douglas Chamber and South Lake Tahoe Chamber, they merged a few years later and became the Tahoe Chamber (or Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce).

Warning on unordered packets of seeds being sent to homes in El Dorado County and around the country

People around the country are receiving mysterious seed packets in the mail from China. While the shipping package may be mislabeled as jewelry or other merchandise, the contents are instead unlabeled seeds.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has become aware of a number of reports regarding these seeds.

Some have been mailed to homes in El Dorado County.

El Dorado County Department of Agriculture officials are instructing residents not to open, plant, or dispose of any unsolicited seed packets received, but to contact their office.

Volunteers spend Tahoe Forest Stewardship day restoring Johnson Meadow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Johnson Meadow was once used as a post-Gold Rush dairy farm, became a place for summer cattle grazing, and is now being restored as part of the Upper Truckee River watershed. The Tahoe Resource Conservation District (TRCD) purchased the Johnson Meadow in 2018, a critical step in restoring the river's watershed that contains significant wildlife habitat, including river, riparian, meadow, and upland habitat areas.

Volunteers sought for food bank distribution Wednesday

The El Dorado County Food Bank's mobile pantry will be in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, July 22 and they are looking for volunteers to assist with handing out food to the community.

They will be in the parking lot of St. Theresa Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for the public, but need volunteers starting at 9:00 a.m.

Letter: Sell your coins to businesses - from toilet paper shortage to coin shortage

The U.S. Federal Reserve has limited the distribution of coin currency due to the Covid-19 Virus.

"Business and bank closures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly disrupted the supply chain and normal circulation patterns for U.S. coins. While there is an adequate overall amount of coins in the economy, the slowed pace of circulation has reduced available inventories in some areas of the country," says the Federal Reserve (read more here).

LTCC Foundation's rundraiser Taste of Gold goes virtual

Funds raised from this event support the Lake Tahoe College Promise program that provides up to three years of tuition-free college for eligible students of all ages, a free textbook lending library, and the Lake Tahoe Community College Food Pantry, which provides crucial nutrition and personal hygiene products to LTCC’s neediest students.

South Lake Tahoe businesses awarded over $65,000 in COVID-19 grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eighty-seven small businesses have taken advantage of a special fund created to help them through COVID-19 related challenges.

The City of South Lake Tahoe put $50,000 into the fund and that was combined with other donations managed by the El Dorado Community Foundation. Other partners include the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, and many generous local donors.

Businesses in South Lake Tahoe were awarded $65,579.22.

Governor: Californians must now wear face masks in most public settings

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As California reaches over 5,000 deaths, Governor Newsom announced Thursday that almost everyone in the state will now be required to wear face masks in public.

“Science shows that face coverings and masks work,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “They are critical to keeping those who are around you safe, keeping businesses open, and restarting our economy.”

Old Tahoe Pines Campground restoration to include picnic area, parking and trails

MEYERS, Calif. - An old campground at the base of Echo Summit in Meyers is undergoing a major transformation that will not only create new wetlands and restore habitat along the Upper Truckee River, it will also create public access.

Work gets underway this week at the old Tahoe Pines Campground on a $1.63M project that will include new accessible-to-all trails, bridge and parking lot, and other features along the river which is Lake Tahoe's largest tributary.

Bank of America in South Lake Tahoe closed this week due to staffing issues

If you went to the South Lake Tahoe branch of Bank of America on Wednesday, you may have found the doors locked and a sign on the window telling you they were closed until Monday.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Vail CEO and his wife donate $2.5M to communities their resorts are located

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again, Vail Resorts' CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam are giving back to the communities where their employees live and where their company operates.

Today, they announced a donation of more than $2.5 million to provide immediate support to those areas as all contend with the severe impacts of COVID-19.

Immediate emergency relief grants will total $1.5 million and will be distributed to communities including South Lake Tahoe.

Robbery at Wells Fargo in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is looking for the person who robbed the Wells Fargo Bank inside Raley's at Stateline on Saturday.

SLTPD responded to the call of a robbery at 11:02 a.m. on March 14. An unknown male had entered the store wearing a mask and headed to the bank on the east side. He demanded money from the teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash and exited the store, heading toward Heavenly Village.

Family Resource Center “Bookworks” celebrates 27 years serving South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Family Resource Center (FRC) has been operating the used book store "Bookworks" in the South Lake Tahoe community for the past 27 years.

The nonprofit's store is currently located in the Lakeview Plaza, 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd # 9, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Their current hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Through the generous support of the local community with donations of books and the volunteers who manage the store, there are currently over 5000 books that cover over 160 genres for sale.

After testing nearly every hybrid on the market including products from Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Ford. Toyota’s 2020 Avalon hybrid is the best yet (actually it is tied with the Camry Hybrid and Lexus ES300h which essentially share chassis and hybrid system). Usually, the predominant factor in buying a hybrid is fuel economy and while the Avalon is rated at 43/43/43 mpg which is not the highest rating among hybrids, it can clearly outperform those numbers while doing so many other things extremely well.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two parcels owned by the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) appear to be on their way to becoming home to affordable housing projects in South Lake Tahoe.

To address the shortage of housing for Californians, Governor Newsom ordered the Department of General Services (DGS) and the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to identify and prioritize excess state-owned property and aggressively pursue sustainable, innovative, cost-effective housing projects.

Sierra-at-Tahoe pre-opening Friday with $10 lift tickets - Proceeds to the Food Bank

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thanks to recent snowfall and with the Thanksgiving holiday in mind, Sierra-at-Tahoe will be running lifts a day early, on Friday, November 29, 2019, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a pre-Opening Day event.

Lift tickets will be available for purchase at ticket windows for just $10, with half of all proceeds to be donated to the Food Bank of El Dorado County.

Operations will be limited, with Easy Rider Express and Rock Garden scheduled to spin, conditions permitting.

Sacramento man arrested in connection with South Lake Tahoe mailbox thefts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Sacramento man has been arrested as a suspect in a series of mailbox thefts in the South Lake Tahoe area.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) was alerted about missing mail from mailboxes in the Black Bart Avenue area. Reports were created and a vehicle and suspect description were obtained from video in the area. EDSO alerted neighboring agencies.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids’ Fishing Derby a success

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge hosted another successful Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at Lake Baron at Tahoe Paradise Park. This was the 17th year the Moose Lodge has hosted this free event for children in the Lake Tahoe area.

Registration began at 8:00 am and wrapped up at 2:00 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, sodas, and water were provided free to all registered children.

South Lake Tahoe bank robber faces long prison term after pleading guilty to 19 robberies

An Oakland, California man pleaded guilty to being a serial bank robber who committed 19 heists across the Bay Area and Northern California, including South Lake Tahoe, between March 2018 and February 2019.

Duane Kurt Makela, 50, pleaded guilty in federal court in San Francisco Thursday to ten armed bank robberies, seven unarmed bank robberies, and two attempted bank robberies.

Counterfeit $100 bills being circulated in South Lake Tahoe; Police ask for public's help

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is looking for a woman suspected of passing, and attempting to pass, counterfeit $100 bills over the past several days at multiple stores.

Starting on Friday, September 13, SLTPD began to receive reports of a female suspect who was at time accompanied by a male suspect with the bad currency. Throughout the week, the suspect(s) went to multiple stores in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge hosts 17th annual Kids' Fishing Derby
