Winter White Party planned by Tahoe Regional Young Professionals

Always one of the "go to" events of the holidays, the Tahoe Regional Youth Professionals (TRYP) have announced the date of their 3rd Annual Winter White Party.

The party this year returns to the Riva Grill on November 22.

Sierra Snowball Fight, A Dodgeball Tournament

Get your teams ready for the annual Sierra-at-Tahoe Dodgeball Tournament. Dubbed a snowball tournament in anticipation of winter, teams will play in a good old fashioned dodgeball tourney.

The event will be held at Steamers' Bar & Grill located at 2236 Lake Tahoe Blvd in South Lake Tahoe. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be a Passholder Appreciation Hour, followed by the doors opening to the public at 7 p.m. for team paperwork hour. Dodgeball Tournament on the back patio will be from 8 p.m. to about 10 p.m.

Residents and Businesses Work to Restore Lake Tahoe’s Natural Beauty

On Sunday, October 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., organizers invite friends and supporters of Lake Tahoe to participate in this special multi-state effort. They will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Sand Harbor for a safety talk, graffiti and trash removal instructions and supplies.

This may seem like a drastic statement and I want to explain it. I'm not talking about guns or metal clubs, I'm talking about cars.

More than 200 people enjoyed the unique cocktail creations served up at the 5th Annual Barton Foundation Signature Cocktail contest held at the Riva Grill on Wednesday evening.

The festive and lively evening featured nine bartenders who were challenged to create a drink that featured Tahoe Blue Vodka. Contestants included Stephen Camp (Heavenly), Gary Gramprie (LewMarNel’s), Ian Sievwright (MacDuff’s ), Alice Schmalenberger (Mc P’s Pub ), Ken Newbold (MontBleu), Josh Thompson (Nepheles ), Erick Martinez (Riva Grill), Mara Milich (Sonney’s BBQ ), and Rob Morse (The Boathouse).

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

As an emergency room nurse, I have cared for visitors and locals who experience heat-related illnesses. This includes dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. It is important to understand the differences, especially when exercising in an area like Lake Tahoe with higher altitudes and higher temperatures.

South Lake Tahoe Celebrates the 4th of July

Communities across the country are celebrating America's Independence Day and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

Thousands of visitors have come to town to enjoy fireworks, BBQs and family fun. There are many ways to celebrate Friday:

Head out to watch the 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade at 10 a.m. Cars, trucks and other vehicles will set out from Les Schwab Tires at the Y and head down Highway 50 to the American Legion where there will be a BBQ. Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night

The facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.

The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:

39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.

Cold Water Challenges Going Viral in South Lake Tahoe

The Cold Water Challenge. Unless you're still in hibernation you've probably heard of someone in South Lake Tahoe taking the Cold Water Challenge.

But What is it?

Someone takes a video of themselves jumping into a body of cold water (such as Lake Tahoe, the Truckee River or Trout Creek). Once they emerge from the water they record themselves saying the names of people they are challenging to jump in cold water as well, and within 24 hours.

"Always My Buddy" Has a Presence at SnowGlobe

Tragedy struck at the 2012 SnowGlobe in South Lake Tahoe when 19 year old Alyssa Byrne became separated from her friends and died of hypothermia after falling in a snow bank after attempting to walk back to her hotel.

Out of that tragedy, the "Always My Buddy" program was developed. Alyssa's family wanted to make sure another family didn't have to go through what they did by making sure everyone that is an unfamiliar place is safe.

Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Oktoberfest is Alive and Well in South Lake Tahoe

Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson is living up to expectations with their food, drink, crafts, games and kid's activities. If the cars parked along Highway 89 is any indication there were several hundred people, if not into the thousands, enjoying the festivities.

The annual event runs until Sunday at 5 pm so there is still time to make it out. The Trolley will be running from the Y and dropping off passengers right in front of Camp Richardson. Biking and walking are also very viable options if one prefers not to drive.

Musical Soirée Supporting New Instruments for LTCC’s Music Department

The Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, in cooperation with David Brock Music, announces an afternoon soirée of music, food, drink and good fellowship to benefit the Music Department at LTCC for the purchase of musical instruments. This event will be held Sunday, Sept. 29 at 3 p.m. at a private residence in Stateline, Nev.

Delectable hors d'oeuvres will be prepared and served by members of the Culinary Arts Program at LTCC. Hand-picked wine selections from Amador and Napa vineyards will also be featured.

Labor Day Weekend in Lake Tahoe full of Activities

The is a plethora of activities for visitors and residents alike to enjoy in South Lake Tahoe this weekend.

The Great Sternwheeler Race between the MS Dixie and Tahoe Queen on Saturday at 10 am. The boats will leave their respective piers and head for their opponent's. Action at Ski Run Marina, Zephyr Cove Resort and points in between.

Outdoors with Don Q: Sept. 7 is California's Free Fishing Day

The second Free Fishing Day in 2013 in California will be Saturday, Sept. 7. The first was way back on Saturday, July 6.

On Sept. 7 you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need for a fishing license. However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever water(s) you will be fishing.

Be sure to obey those rules and regulations, and don’t do something illegal. If you do, and if you get caught, it could be a very expensive experience.

Battle of the boat tradition continues with Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race

The 21st Great Lake Tahoe Sternwheeler Race churns through the lake’s clear blue waters as the South Shores’ two paddlewheelers, California’s Tahoe Queen and Nevada’s M.S. Dixie II, are pitted against each other, Saturday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m.

Brunch is served from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and then departs from respective marinas to battle. The M.S. Dixie II leads the “battle of the paddle,” series 12-8, which is a four-mile race along the shoreline.

Happy Hour Ca$h Mob Generates Additional Revenue for Members

TahoeChamber’s “Ca$h Mob” series have been successful in their mission to support local businesses and keep money on the hill. Yesterday’s Happy Hour Mob was no exception.

More than 15 “mobbers” showed up for food and drink specials including a delicious smoked rib sampler platter at the Fox & Hound on Tramway Drive off Kingsbury Grade.

TahoeChamber would like to thank the Fox & Hound for hosting the mob, as well as the attendees at this event that that was created to help fulfill the chamber’s goal of creating a strong local economy.
