Designate a sober driver on St. Patrick's Day

While the public makes plans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) and other law enforcement agencies are preparing to keep the roadways free of impaired drivers so that everyone can safely enjoy the festivities.

SLTPD is adding two patrols on Saturday to watch for drunk drivers on local roads, and CHP officers will be doing to the same.

El Fresco Mexican Bistro has brought a new flavor to the heart of Meyers.

Locals Tim and Kristi Cain moved into the space vacated by Verde and spent weeks creating the new restaurant and menu. They own "Freel Perk" next door so they were excited to offer cuisine that fits not only their active lifestyle, but features a large menu with tapas, 11 breakfast choices, fajitas, tacos, burritos, salads, veggie bowls, soups and much more.

Possible South Lake Tahoe ban on Styrofoam

The list of New York City; Takoma Park, Maryland; Seattle, Washington; Washington DC; Miami Beach, Florida; Freeport and Portland, Maine; Nantucket, Massachusetts; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, California could soon have South Lake Tahoe added as the 113th California city or county to ban polystyrene. Berkeley has had a ban in place since 1988, the first California city to do so.

Law enforcement from both California and Nevada are reminding motorists to not drink and drive, especially during Super Bowl weekend which seen an increase of drunk drivers on the road. The League to Save Lake Tahoe and the startup transportation service Tahoe Convoy have been working together for over a year to connect the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe with a luxury shuttle.

Tahoe Chamber's Connect for a Cause Charity Mixer benefits Bread & Broth 4 Kids

Tahoe Chamber's annual Connect for a Cause charity mixer will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Once again, this year's recipient will be Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K).

Last year, over 100 people attended the event and raised almost $1,300 for the non-profit that serves over 170 kids in grades K-8 weekly with a backpack full of food to take home each when free school lunches are not available.

Beach Retreat turns into Winter Wonderland

The Beach Retreat in South Lake Tahoe is not your normal lake front hotel this season. It has been transformed into something from the North Pole. Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless is grateful to the Sierra Health Foundation for awarding a grant of $15,000 for the operation of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in 2017-2018. The Sierra Health Foundation is an independent foundation committed to supporting health-related activities in Northern California. The South Lake Tahoe Warm Room is an overnight emergency shelter that operates only during the winter months in our community.

Fundraiser at Flight Deck to benefit Sierra Avalanche Center

Smoke filling Lake Tahoe Basin from prescribed fire operations

Prescribed fire operations in both the Eldorado National Forest and Tahoe National Forest Truckee Ranger District are sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin Thursday.

If you have low tolerance for smoke, please take the following precautions to reduce your exposure.
· Stay indoors as much as possible especially seniors and children. Avoid physical exertion.
· Close windows, doors, and outside vents when it is smoky. Use a fan or air conditioner to re-circulate the air. Ventilate your home and work place during periods when it is least smoky.

South Lake Tahoe Food & Wine Festival at Harrah's and Harveys

Food, wine and spirits will be the stars at Harrah's Lake Tahoe's 8th annual South Lake Tahoe Food and Wine Festival. October 27-29.

Activities begin Friday evening, Oct. 27, with a Whiskey Tasting at Cliché Lounge on the 16th floor of Harrah’s hotel. Enjoy tasting a variety of whiskeys from around the world, which are “Crafted,” using different processes to create amazing varieties of whiskey.

Benefit cruise to support former local fighting cancer

When Gage Olson's boss at Zephyr Cove Resorts found out her mother was fighting breast cancer he decided he couldn't just stand by and do nothing. He organized a benefit cruise on the Tahoe Bleu Wave to raise funds for Gage's mom, Tisha Young.

Young, 49, who has lived in South Lake Tahoe on and off for over a dozen years, now calls Grants Pass, Oregon her home. She moved there to be with her father as he was on dialysis, and now that he is gone (he died on April 13), she is fighting her own battle, Stage 4A of a rare form of Breast Cancer.

Could styrofoam be a thing of the past in South Lake Tahoe?

Hundreds of cities across the country have banned the use of polystyrene (better known as Styrofoam) in their communities. The SLT City Council will be taking a look into banning the substance in the City Limits at their October 17, 2017 meeting.

In 2013, South Lake Tahoe added a ban of single-use plastic bags in grocery stores to the City Code.

Air quality in El Dorado County affected by Northern California fires

Air quality in El Dorado County is currently being impacted by smoke from wildfires burning in the State. County health officials are reminding residents to take precautions should wildfire smoke impact the areas in which they live, work and recreate. According to Air Pollution Control Officer Dave Johnston, wildfires can produce smoke that causes health problems, particularly for children, older people and those with heart disease or respiratory issues.

Johnston advises residents to limit outdoor activity if they see or smell smoke.

Mocktails added to the mix at Cocktails for a Cause

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Revelers will have double the number of drinks to choose from at the eighth annual Cocktails for a Cause fundraiser on Wednesday, October 4. This is because each mixologist will be crafting both a mocktail and a cocktail.

“Cocktails for a Cause is a lively event that helps support health and wellness programs in our community,” said Jenny Taylor, the event coordinator. “This year, we are offering non-alcoholic options to encourage our community members who choose not to drink to join in on the fun and support an important cause.”

Party to celebrate life of Rick Angelocci at Valhalla

A celebration of the life of Rick Angelocci will be held in South Lake Tahoe on Sunday, September 10 at Valhalla starting at 2:00 p.m.

When Angelocci died July 6 after a two-year battle with cancer, he wanted his family to host a party and not a memorial, a time where friends and family could come together and laugh, eat, drink and share stories.

Longest running Lake Tahoe Halloween party, the Freakers Ball, returns

For almost four decades, Halloween in South Lake Tahoe has been a party like no other with the annual Freakers Ball bringing people in from all over to demonstrate their creative talents in costume creations.

Local Brian Williams started the tradition inside the Tahoe Palace, a Chinese restaurant which was located next to Raley's at Stateline at the time. He named the event after the 1972 Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show song, "Freaker's Ball." The location changed from there, to the old Super 8 (Knight's Inn), Edgewood Tahoe, the former nightclub Turtles, then to Caesars Tahoe.

Thanks to a generous donor, Temple Bat Yam hosted the August 14th Bread & Broth Monday Meal at St. Theresa Grace Hall. B&B, a non-profit, all volunteer organization, began feeding the needy of the Tahoe South Shore community in 1989 as a multi-denominational food outreach program. Throughout the past 28 years, volunteers of all faiths have supported the B&B program and Temple Bat Yam’s Adopt a Day of Nourishment dinner is a testament to the continuing support of all faiths in feeding the hungry of our community.

South Lake Tahoe Rotary's 2nd annual Hootenanny

Tickets or those over 21 are $45 if bought ahead of the event, $50 at the door and include unlimited beer tasting and food. Kids 6 and under are free, and designated drivers and those ages 7-20 are $20.

Dinner and Melodrama aboard the V&T Railway

DUI Checkpoint somewhere on the South Shore Saturday

Another reminder to not drink and drive in South Lake Tahoe will be on Saturday, July 15 when the the California Highway Patrol (CHP) conducts a sobriety checkpoint.

CHP has said they will be operating the checkpoint between 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. "somewhere in the east area of El Dorado County." This could be Meyers, South Lake Tahoe or Tahoma.

Try out the bikes at LimeBike ride share kicks off in South Lake Tahoe

LimeBike, the newest in bike riding sharing, will kick off their South Lake Tahoe operations with a BBQ and ribbon cutting on Friday, July 14 at the Ski Run Blvd Farmer's Market from 4:00 p.m. t 5:30 p.m.

The San Mateo based business will have ten bikes prepared for people to try out along the boulevard between Outdoor Gear lab and the farmer's market. They'll have a booth set up with free food and drink, flyers and t-shirts.

Keep Your Cool: How to avoid heat-related illnesses

It’s that time of year where heat-related illnesses are on the rise for locals and visitors alike. Heat illnesses include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. It is important to understand the differences, especially when exercising in an area like Lake Tahoe with higher altitudes and higher temperatures.

Volunteers hit Lake Tahoe beaches to clean up after the 4th of July

5:00 p.m. update: The beach cleanups for July 5 have concluded, and according to the League to Save Lake Tahoe, 1,678.25 pounds were picked up by their 321 volunteers at 5.64 miles of beaches. And that to the 4,000 pounds collected at El Dorado area beaches and there was 2.84 tons of trash picked up in one day.

26th annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe Sunday

Over 3,000 cyclists will be participating in the 26th annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe on Sunday, June 4,

"Imagine the scenic beauty of Lake Tahoe with its crystal clear blue waters surrounded by towering majestic snow capped peaks. Imagine being able to ride a bicycle around its 72-mile shoreline or a 100-mile century ride," said Event Director Curtis Fong.

The ride isn't a race, but a fun ride and is fully supported with volunteers manning rest stops along the way with food and beverage.

Crowd turns out for South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Ceremony

"I'm so proud of our community and this great turnout," said South Lake Tahoe City Councilman Tom Davis during Monday's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery.

A larger crowd than normal watched the ceremony which featured boys and girl scouts, music and speakers that included Gold Star Mom Patty Smith. Her son, Sgt. Timothy Michael Smith, was one of three South Lake Tahoe men to die in action since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Smith, 25, who died April 7, 2008, after his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad.
