Raymond Donald Kope passed away on January 13, 2019, at his winter home in Cathedral City, California, with his wife, Cat, by his side.

Ray was born to Michael Kope and Edith Roskos Kope on December 19, 1943, in Lakewood, Ohio. When he was a young boy, his family left their home in Ohio and headed west to the San Jose, California, area where Ray attended grammar and high schools.

As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.

Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

Reuters: Sources say Eldorado Resorts clinches $18 billion cash and stock deal for Caesars

U.S. casino operator Eldorado Resorts Inc of Reno has agreed to merge with Caesars Entertainment Corp in a cash and stock deal that values its peer at about $18 billion including debt, people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Sunday.

The agreement comes three months after Reuters reported that Caesars had agreed to give Eldorado access to its books under pressure from billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who earlier this year was awarded seats on Caesars’ board.

LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater announces retirement

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced he'll retire in one year.

Dr. Tarwater has been with LTUSD since 2005.

During their last meeting on June 11, the Board concluded its annual evaluation of Dr. Tarwater's performance. Though details of that evaluation are not available, they extended his contract one extra year until 2022 until they were notified of his notice of retirement.

At their June 25 meeting, the Board is scheduled to accept his retirement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's Wild Tahoe Weekend at the US Forest Service's Taylor Creek Visitor Center June 21-22! On Saturday it's the Native Species Festival and on Sunday, the 10th annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host the seventh annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free family event is at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Fatal DUI suspect makes Douglas County court appearance

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The man accused of causing the death of Carson City resident Hugo Parra-Solis was in Tahoe Township Court on Tuesday.

Dressed in his jail-issued jumpsuit and shoes, the chained Jerrad Dominguez appeared in front of visiting Judge Nancy Oesterle. He does not have an attorney and told the judge he was trying to secure a Nevada attorney. Due to a lack of counsel, Dominguez did not enter any pleas.

Choices for Children would like to thank the community for their amazing support of the 2019 Healthy Bottom Line Mother's Day Diaper Drive. Throughout the month of May, donation boxes that had been decorated by our local Boys and Girls Club members were located throughout the community. We received thousands of diapers that will be distributed to our community's youngest and most vulnerable residents.

Carson City man identified as victim in Thursday's deadly DUI crash in Lake Tahoe

Free food for South Lake Tahoe youth all summer with Bread & Broth 4 Kids program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the third consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth until school resumes in August. During the school year more than 2,000 local students receive free or reduced cost meals at breakfast and lunch, but that program doesn't cover weekends or summers and that is where Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) comes in. In the 2018-19 school year, BB4K supplied over 180 bags of food each Friday to local youth and last summer 225 bags of food were given away each week.

The El Dorado County Cold Case Task Force continues their investigation into Joseph Holt to see if he is responsible for other unsolved crimes. They are asking for the public's help in identifying any crimes they may have witnessed or been victims of that may be associated with Joseph Holt.

Widespread power outage in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers

UPDATE: 10:00 a.m. - From Liberty Utilities on their Twitter page: "After further investigation we have discovered that the cause of this morning's power outage in South Tahoe was a crow that got into the capacitor bank at the substation. Out of respect for the crow's family we will not be posting pictures."

UPDATE 7:40 a.m. - Power has been restored. No cause for the outage has been reported.

New ceramic art studio opens in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Compass Clay Studio, a learning ceramic studio and art gallery, is open for business in South Lake Tahoe. Owners and instructors, Colleen Sidey and Bryan Yerian are ceramic artists with over 40 years combined experience, Lake Tahoe Community College art faculty members, and local elementary school art enrichment teachers. Colleen and Bryan have lived in South Lake Tahoe for over ten years and created Compass Clay Studio as a way to provide the local community with access to the clay experience.

Google Nest team builds and donates 150 bikes for South Lake Tahoe youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A gathering of the Google Nest team at MontBleu this week not only provided staff with a great team building retreat in Lake Tahoe, but it also provided 150 local youth with brand new bikes.

Hundreds of the Google Nest employees took part in building and giving away the bikes that were presented to youth from the McKinney-Vento homeless program at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD), the Family Resource Center, Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free.

South Tahoe High athletes celebrate community college sports commitments

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Twelve more South Tahoe High seniors celebrated their commitment to playing their respective sports after next week's graduation. Nine will be playing baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball at community colleges across the state while another three are playing hockey at the next level.

Public invited to US50 Main Street Management Plan Open House

The next phase of the Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project (SSCRP) begins with an open house on its Main Street Management Plan on Wednesday, May 29 at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) office from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to drop in any time.

SSCRP, commonly referred to as the Loop Road Project, will include seven more key components to be completed by the TRPA and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). The first of those components is the Main Street Management Plan.

Those who sacrificed their lives honored in South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow and rain turned to sunshine as over 100 people honored those who died for their country during the annual American Legion Post 795 Memorial Day ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Knowing people are "Tahoe Tough" the Legion decided to keep their plans on having the event outdoors, and their prayers were answered when the sun came through and shone on the attendees, speakers, and singers.

Barton Hospital nurses go out on strike

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The almost 180 registered nurses at Barton Hospital went out on a planned strike Friday morning to show the South Lake Tahoe hospital they want a fair contract, one that honors all of their demands.

This year’s event is being held at The Beach Retreat and Lodge located at 3411 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe. The Beach Bash includes live music, beachside barbecue, silent auction, games, a bounce house, face painting, beautiful lake views, beer and wine tasting, Homebrew for the Homeless’s home-brewed beer contest, and more.

All proceeds go to Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless.

RNs at Barton Memorial Hospital serve notice of intent to strike

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Nurses Association (CNA) has served Barton Health with another ten-day notice of their RNs' intent to strike on May 24, 2019. This is the second such notice this year. Their original notice was sent on February 15 and was withdrawn on February 22.

Western Nevada College starts pilot program for CTE students

Western Nevada College's (WNC) Adult Literacy & Language program started a pilot program this spring to help individuals earn college credits toward a nationally recognized credential while improving their basic skills and achieving workforce training in construction.

The pilot program, NV-ACE, provides people with the opportunity to develop the skills required in the in-demand jobs in the area.
