Welcome back to The Viking Corner. The South Tahoe High School 2019-2020 school year has officially begun. As freshmen enter a new chapter in their lives, fall sports begin, and seniors try to make their last year memorable.

Incoming freshmen came to campus on Monday to organize their schedules, tour the campus, and see what’s in store for them for the next four years. Upperclassmen led the freshmen, making sure they were comfortable and answered their questions.

Wine Walk kicks off Labor Day Weekend at Heavenly Village and South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is looked at as the end of summer. Labor Day Weekend is filled with holiday barbeques and picnics, and some last moments under the sun before the arrival of fall and winter.

Five-week Hebrew reading crash course

A cutting-edge Hebrew reading crash course is taking the Jewish world by storm. The flashcard based language course developed by the Jewish Learning Institute, promises users that they can learn to read Hebrew in only five weeks if they follow the program. Beginning Thursday, Aug. 29 at 10:00am, Rabbi Mordey Richer of Chabad at Lake Tahoe will conduct the five sessions of the course, Read it in Hebrew, at their Ski Run Marina location.

Toxic algae tests underway on samples from South Lake Tahoe beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are testing water and algae in the Kiva Beach area after a man reported the death of his dog after allegedly being in Lake Tahoe behind Tallac Historic Site a week ago.

The death of the dog came to the attention of Lahontan Regional Water Quality Board late Wednesday, August 21. The following day they were joined by the El Dorado County Environmental Health Department along the stretch of beach the dog's owner said they were at the previous Sunday. They spoke with the owner and retraced their steps that day.

They start its fall season under new leadership on Tuesday, September 10 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Rehearsals will be every Tuesday evening until their holiday performances the first weekend in December.

2nd annual Reef's Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness returns to Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The 2nd annual Reef’s Run for Hydrocephalus Awareness will be held at Round Hill Pines Resort on Sunday, September 8 at 8:30 a.m.

The run is in support of Reef Woldt, a three-year-old South Lake Tahoe boy with hydrocephalus, and all others will the condition that affects more than one million Americans.

Sierra House Elementary not opening on the first day of school August 26

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first day of school has been pushed out until September 9 for all of the students at Sierra House Elementary School. South Tahoe Now had spoken to the school district on Wednesday and at that time they were still hoping to have the school open by August 26.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe celebrates Lisa Maloff and end of summer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In honor of all that the Angel of Tahoe Lisa Maloff does for the community, the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club held a celebration Friday complete with large bouncy houses, a train, and magic show.

All kids who have been attending BGCLT in South Lake Tahoe this summer were on had to enjoy the party provided by Lisa, something she has now done for three years. Besides all the fun and games, the kids were also treated to pizza, hot dogs, watermelon and ice pops.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

A record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

Tahoe Bike Love rides launch in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bike Tahoe, a nonprofit promoting bicycling in the region, has teamed up with Lake Tahoe AleWorX and BlueZone Sports of South Lake Tahoe to launch its first Tahoe Bike Love event – a weekly mountain bike ride for the public.

“We decided to team up and produce this ride series to meet the increasing requests by locals and visitors for a regularly scheduled ride they can count on,” said Bike Tahoe President Ty Polastri.

Bike Love outings are scheduled for Thursday evenings beginning August 1 at 5:30 p.m.

National Night Out in South Lake Tahoe August 6

New Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map released for 2019 paddling season

Paddlers enjoying Lake Tahoe now have an updated resource available to navigate the 72 miles of the lake's shoreline.

The Sierra Business Council has just released the 2019 Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map & Access Guide to help paddlers safely find their way along the water route. It pinpoints all of the 37 public launch and landing sites, including the Lake Tahoe Water Trail's 20 trailhead sites with wayfinding signage, restrooms and parking.

Back-to-back American Century Championship wins for Tony Romo in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Tony Romo is the champ once again in the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe, becoming the fourth player to successfully defend their title at the celebrity tournament.

The former Dallas Cowboy quarterback and current CBS analyst ended the tournament with a 71 in the modified Stableford scoring system. Romo topped three-time winner Mark Mulder by ten points and third place finisher Mardy Fish by 14.

Romo entered the final round with a nine-point lead and says he felt really good about his game, especially as he started the back nine.

On June 24th, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal fed 96 community members who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to be served beef stroganoff, sautéed zucchini, a green salad, fresh apricots and a lovely assortment of desserts. Sponsoring the meal for the evening was Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, whose $300 donation helped cover the costs of the meal, and who provided five Hard Rock team members to participate in their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship.

First round of American Century Championship starts Friday at Edgewood Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The celebrities taking part in the 30th annual American Century Championship are putting aside the fun and games and getting down to business as the first round starts Friday, July 12.

The oddsmakers at Harrah's Tahoe/Harveys have Tony Romo and Mark Mulder as the favorites, with John Smoltz, Kyle Williams, Mardy Fish, Steph Curry, Joe Pavelski, Jeremy Roenick and Trent Dilfer rounding out the favorites at the book. Winners announced in annual Optimist Day in Paradise Duck Races

The Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe recently held a fun and successful Day in Paradise at Tahoe Paradise Park. Part of the day's festivities were the duck races with 156 decorated business entries.

The Business Duck Best of Show went to Lukin's Water Company and they chose to donate their $100 prize money to High Sierra Softball. First runner up was Base Camp Pizza, followed by SLT Mini-Storage with both of their entries in the top four, and honorable mentions went to Soroptimists International of Tahoe Sierra and Azul Latin Kitchen.

20,000 miles pedaled during Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge

During the first two weeks of June, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition teamed up to lead the 14th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge. 285 people took the challenge and biked 20,420 miles at Lake Tahoe.

The basin-wide challenge is a friendly competition that encourages individuals and teams to track trips and miles on their bikes. Starting June 1 and running through June 14, Tahoe Basin bikers prevented an estimated 6,945 pounds of carbon dioxide from escaping into the atmosphere.

Free outdoor movie nights at South Lake Tahoe restaurant

Enjoy free outdoor movies every Friday in South Lake Tahoe all summer long at Chicken-in-a-Barrel located at 2100 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

A night under the stars with friends and family, watching movies on the restaurant's large screen. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and pillows and go see them at the Barrel for some family fun.

They'll be open with their famous BBQ along with Hawaiian Shave Ice. In July they'll start serving beer and wine.

South Lake Tahoe police officers connecting with kids at ‘Badges and Books’ program

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Through a partnership with the El Dorado County Library, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has started a new weekly storytime series, Badges and Books.

Officers will be at the library in South Lake Tahoe each Friday at 10:30 a.m. starting June 21 to read stories for the youth in our community in English and the Spanish version, Libros Y Placas, every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Each storytime will last about one hour and is suitable for families with young children.

Wild Tahoe Weekend at Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's Wild Tahoe Weekend at the US Forest Service's Taylor Creek Visitor Center June 21-22! On Saturday it's the Native Species Festival and on Sunday, the 10th annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host the seventh annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free family event is at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Harrah's and Harveys host “Family Fun Festival” on 4th of July

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - After an epic winter, a spot on the beach to watch the annual Lights on the Lake fireworks show may be hard to find. Harrah's and Harveys are planning a party for the whole family in their outdoor arena and say "No beach, no problem!"

On Thursday, July 4 they are holding a “Family Fun Festival” with fireworks viewing starting at 2:00 p.m.

New additions to South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade; Deadline to participate extended

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual 4th of July Parade in South Lake Tahoe is adding some new features in 2019, including a 20-foot-tall eagle balloon.

Starting at 10:00 a.m. the parade will leave the staging area on Ski Run Boulevard and head west along Lake Tahoe Boulevard (US50) to Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

There will be dancers, live music, floats, neighborhood groups with a Food Truck Park at the finish. A marching band isn't scheduled this year due to their high cost, but perhaps another one will find their wait to South Lake Tahoe.

6th annual Wildfire Expo in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The public is invited to attend the 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday, June 15 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the TJ Maxx parking lot located at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe where Highways 50 and 89 intersect.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, along with multiple local agencies, are coming together to help everyone know how to create defensible space around their home, how to make a home escape plan and other ways to be prepared in the case of fire. Smokey the Bear will make an appearance.

There will be refreshments, a raffle, fun and education for the whole family.

Day in Paradise and Duck Races return to Tahoe Paradise Park

The annual South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club Day in Paradise is fun for the whole family and returns to Tahoe Paradise Park on Saturday, June 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

It is a whole day jam-packed with fun starting off with a pancake breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Then their famous Duck Races being on the Upper Truckee River at the park. There is also a Car & Truck Show and Shine, kid's game with prizes, free live music from noon to 6:00 p.m., a beer and wine garden, a luau with a roasted pig and a silent auction.

St. Theresa's Old Western Parish Festival

St.Theresa Catholic Church of South Lake Tahoe is holding their annual Parish Festival on Saturday, June 22 from noon to 9:00 p.m.in the church's parking lot. It has a western theme so cowboy hats and boots are encouraged.

The event will feature fun and games, music and entertainment. Enjoy delicious Mexican, Filipino and American food, drinks and desserts. There is also a beer and wine garden.

5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon this weekend; Lane closure announced

Over 1,800 runners will be participating in this weekend's 5th annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon. The race, presented by Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA), sends the runners past the spectacular scenery of many of Tahoe’s east and south shore treasures including Glenbrook, Logan Shoals, Cave Rock, Round Hill Pines, Nevada Beach, and Rabe Meadow. They wind down over 1,000 feet from Spooner Summit to the finish line at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe.

The Road Beat: 2019 Mazda 3 - Cementing its number one compact spot

Mazda has an “all new” Mazda 3. It has some resemblance to the prior generation Mazda 3 but it is a new fourth generation and it had a new designer, Yasutake Tsuchida. Tsuchida continued with the “Kodo” design theme using a very similar, aggressive front end while smoothing out the body ridges and incorporating a sleeker, less complicated rear end. It uses a similar window line except for the “Hofmeister kink” now present in the termination of the rear side windows. It is a better-looking car (then its prior generation) and retains the title of the best-looking compact car.

New ceramic art studio opens in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Compass Clay Studio, a learning ceramic studio and art gallery, is open for business in South Lake Tahoe. Owners and instructors, Colleen Sidey and Bryan Yerian are ceramic artists with over 40 years combined experience, Lake Tahoe Community College art faculty members, and local elementary school art enrichment teachers. Colleen and Bryan have lived in South Lake Tahoe for over ten years and created Compass Clay Studio as a way to provide the local community with access to the clay experience.

70th Anniversary of the Wagon Train through South Lake Tahoe Sunday

The Highway 50 Wagon Train will once again traverse the Sierra this week, just as the pioneers of the 1800s once did. People seeking riches headed west after gold was discovered near Placerville in 1849, but their routes were varied as very few had traveled that direction before them.
