Native Species Festival at Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The Sixth Annual Native Species Festival will be held at the Taylor Creek visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This free family event is hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and is a great way to spend the day outdoors and learn about the native species of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Visitor's Center is located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

Tahoe bear break-ins could spike with drought-related food shortage

As the drought begins to impact wildlife, there is concern that California black bears are breaking into Tahoe homes because the lack of rain is contributing to a lack of food.

Now some wildlife activists want to lure those bears away from neighborhoods by feeding them where they live -- in the woods -- even though that practice is illegal.

The activists argue that the drastic action will help the bears survive.

New restaurant, Burger Stop, opens in South Lake Tahoe

A popular South Lake Tahoe hamburger spot has opened a second location at the "Y".

Loreen Sanchez, owner of The Burger Lounge on Highway 89 has opened "The Burger Stop" at the South Y Center between Beach Hut Deli and Starbucks.

Wednesday was opening day, unveiling a full menu including gourmet burgers and hot dogs, fries, salads, 23 flavors of milkshakes and sundaes, freezes, floats, and ice cream.

Sanchez and her team will be open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Phone in orders are available at 530-541-3642.

A Lake Tahoe breakfast tradition for more than 50 years

The scene: The 1950s were a huge decade of change for South Lake Tahoe, with the proliferation of casinos on the Nevada side and the creation of the one-chair Heavenly ski resort on the California side. But the main attraction, then as now, was the lake itself, its shore dotted with mom-and-pop motels, vacation cottages and souvenir shops. When the original Red Hut opened here in 1959, South Lake Tahoe was becoming popular but the tourism infrastructure was nascent.

Burglary suspect fills out job application and eats McFlurry before committing crime

This story could be straight out of the "dumb criminals" shows on television.

On October 23, the Trailhead Lodge located at 3892 Lake Tahoe Blvd reported a burglary from their locked and unattended lobby. Officer Hounsell from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department responded and watched surveillance footage from the motel.

Movie night at Lakeview Commons this Saturday

Children's Environmental Science Day

Wildman's 50's Drive In opens in South Lake Tahoe

If you were wondering where Wildman's Cafe went to after leaving their Ski Run Marina location, you're in luck....we found them in their new home!

Rami and Patricia Suda Merrikh have opened Wildman's 50's Drive-In at the Y in South Lake Tahoe. While not the coffee house as before, they prepare a wide variety of food on their menu.

We stopped in to see what was up in the mid-century circa establishment. Rami was at the grill and Patricia was taking care of the front counter.

Roots and Wings Preschool at Kahle Community Center Earns Five Star Rating

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

I wanted to keep the Skibum as well as my alter ego out of the publicity due to the fact that there would be resistance to the idea from those that do not always agree with my views and I wanted no distractions. We had to play good cop / bad cop with the city in order to push the memorial through and guess which role I played.

South Lake Tahoe pot club owner sentenced to five years in federal prison; agrees to forfeit drug money

Former City of Angels 2 pot club owner Gennaro "Gino" DiMatteo of South Lake Tahoe was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller.

DiMatteo had pled guilty to a felony for marijuana trafficking on Jan. 9. As part of his plea agreement, DiMatteo agreed to forfeit more than $40,000 to the United States.

Science springs to life at Lake Tahoe Expo

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host the eighth-annual Science Expo, together with Tahoe Expedition Academy, other community partners, and with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline.

The Science Expo is open to the general public on the evening of Wednesday, March 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. for children of all ages together with their families at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. Ice cream will be provided by Susie Scoops of Incline Village. Admission is free.

A 30-day public comment period began Thursday on plans associated with upgrades at the Camp Richardson Resort campground along Highway 89 near South Lake Tahoe.
Plans include upgrades and enhancements to the campground day use facilities as well as BMPs and road improvements to ease traffic congestion around the campground and along Highway 89 at the popular Lake Tahoe resort.

Former South Lake Tahoe pot club owner pleads guilty to federal trafficking charges

Gennaro "Gino" DiMatteo, 43, of South Lake Tahoe, pled guilty Wednesday to count two of the indictment, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. DiMatteo is scheduled to be sentenced in April.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, and the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Jason Hitt is prosecuting the case.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency would like to invite the community to its Community Appreciation Day Open House and Lake Spirit Awards on Thursday, September 27 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the TRPA offices at 128 Market Street in Stateline.
This year’s theme is “Making Progress” and will focus on the Regional Plan Update and the 5th anniversary of the Angora Wildfire. Partners include the Tahoe Science Consortium who will show a pictorial display of the Angora Wildfire and restoration efforts.
