Mandatory meeting for Fall Fire Academy applicants at LTCC

Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.

Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.

BLM wants government officials to get VIP treatment at Burning Man

U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) officials are asking Burning Man organizers to provide "excessive" comforts such as flushing toilets, washers and dryers, and vanity mirrors in a compound for high-level government officials staying in Black Rock City.

A Burning Man spokesman estimated the compound would cost the event more than $1 million, bringing its 2015 permit fees to about $5 million. The renderings of the compound obtained by the RGJ also show various accommodations set aside for VIP visitors but don't indicate who the visiting dignitaries will be.

Years of water conservation have helped South Lake Tahoe

As one can imagine, Donielle Morse has been very busy lately. As the Water Conservationist specialist for the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Morse spends her days informing, teaching and keeping up on the new state water mandates.

Drought or no drought, water conservation is necessary and its the reason South Lake Tahoe is faring better than most communities in the West. Since 2007, local water users have cut back 27% of their annual water usage.

South Lake Tahoe's Blue Ribbon Choir to join Foreigner on stage

South Lake Tahoe's Blue Ribbon Choir will be joining British-American rock icons, Foreigner, on the MontBleu stage Saturday evening.

Several month ago the band, famous for such hits as "I Want to Know What Love Is,""Feels Like the First Time," "Cold as Ice," and "Hot Blooded," contacted Dave Davis of MontBleu about their desire to have a local choir join them on stage during their South Shore show.

Davis contacted Paul Kushner, the Blue Ribbon Choir director, to see if his group would be interested.

He said "yes!"

South Lake Tahoe ice skaters bring home top honors

The Tahoe Snowflake ice skating team went to the All Stars competition in Vacaville last weekend, bringing home several top honors including two first place trophies and two second place trophies that will be added to the display to the South Tahoe Ice Arena.

All of the skaters who went to Vacaville danced in the first place production number. Also in first place was the oldest of the Tahoe synchronized age-group teams. The two younger teams placed second in their respective categories.

Native Species Festival at Taylor Creek Visitor Center

The Sixth Annual Native Species Festival will be held at the Taylor Creek visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tahoe bear break-ins could spike with drought-related food shortage

As the drought begins to impact wildlife, there is concern that California black bears are breaking into Tahoe homes because the lack of rain is contributing to a lack of food.

Now some wildlife activists want to lure those bears away from neighborhoods by feeding them where they live -- in the woods -- even though that practice is illegal.

The activists argue that the drastic action will help the bears survive.

New restaurant, Burger Stop, opens in South Lake Tahoe

A popular South Lake Tahoe hamburger spot has opened a second location at the "Y".

Loreen Sanchez, owner of The Burger Lounge on Highway 89 has opened "The Burger Stop" at the South Y Center between Beach Hut Deli and Starbucks.

Wednesday was opening day, unveiling a full menu including gourmet burgers and hot dogs, fries, salads, 23 flavors of milkshakes and sundaes, freezes, floats, and ice cream.

Reno man sentenced to jail after using plane to transport marijuana out of state

Kevin Dennis Golden, 39, of Reno, Nevada, was sentenced today to two years in prison for possession with the intent to distribute approximately 88 pounds of marijuana that he was attempting to fly in a private plane to Pennsylvania, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Time to remove studded snow tires in South Lake Tahoe

Studded snow tires in both California and Nevada need to be removed from vehicles by May 1.

By Nevada law, studded snow tires are only permitted in use between October 1 and April 30. Retractable studded snow tires are allowed throughout the year with tire studs retracted from May 1 through September 30.

Top women cyclists coming to Lake Tahoe; Amgen Tour course goes through town

Exciting times for South Lake Tahoe in May as the community shines on the international stage as the location of the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California. Fourteen teams consisting of 84 of the top professional women racers will be in town for the race May 8-9, 2015. The racers consist of Olympic medalists, World Champions, Tour de France competitors and other cyclists from the National and International field.

Many of the teams have already been in the area getting ready for the Lake Tahoe stop on their tour. As we get closer to May 8, more of the participants will be in town.

A Lake Tahoe breakfast tradition for more than 50 years

The scene: The 1950s were a huge decade of change for South Lake Tahoe, with the proliferation of casinos on the Nevada side and the creation of the one-chair Heavenly ski resort on the California side. But the main attraction, then as now, was the lake itself, its shore dotted with mom-and-pop motels, vacation cottages and souvenir shops. When the original Red Hut opened here in 1959, South Lake Tahoe was becoming popular but the tourism infrastructure was nascent.

South Lake Tahoe shaves heads to raise money

The floor of the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena resembled a large hair salon on Friday as almost 100 people, young and old, male and female, had their heads shaved for childhood cancer research. The 4th annual St. Baldrick's fundraiser has raised over $55,000 so far in 2015, and donations are still being accepted.

Christy Smith started the local St. Baldrick's event in 2011 in honor of her grandson, South Tahoe High junior Bailey Johnson. Bailey was a four time Stage 4 cancer survivor by the time he was 5.

Utah Utes win Pac 8 Hockey Championship at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena

The University of Utah ice hockey team won the Pac 8 Hockey Conference Sunday in South Lake Tahoe with a 5 to 1 win over the Oregon Ducks.

Number 1 Utah was evening matched on the ice with Number 3 Oregon, but penalties ended up being the difference. The two had met in the 2013 finals which ended with Utah on top as well, so Oregon was looking for revenge.

South Lake Tahoe hosts Pac-8 collegiate hockey championships

Collegiate hockey is headed to South Lake Tahoe February 6 through 8 when the Pac-8 Championship is held at the SLT Ice Arena.

Defending 2014 co-champs Arizona State ended the season in first with a 9-1 record but will not be attending this weekend's tournament due to disciplinary action. “The Arizona State PAC-8 team has declined the invitation to participate in this year’s tournament due to a team rule violation," according to the Pac-8 website.

Winter wonderland at Heavenly Mountain Resort

The word of the day: Pogonip.

That is what gave the top of South Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort the look of winter and fresh snow on Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a cloud deck around 8,000-9,000 feet was in place most of the night and the supercooled liquid droplets froze on the branches becoming a thick coating of frost.

It is now time to sign up to play in the 2015 Babe Ruth season in South Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly receives 11" to 14" of snow; California Base to open

Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11-14” of new snow in the last 24 hours, allowing the resort to expand terrain and open the California side of the mountain on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31.

Heavenly will now offer three access points to the mountain, including the Heavenly Gondola at Heavenly Village, Stagecoach Lodge in Nevada, and California Lodge off of Ski Run Blvd. With the extra two mountain access points now open, the heavy crowds that have been at the Gondola all week should dissipate.

Sacramento man pleads guilty in immigration marriage scheme

A Sacramento man pled guilty today to conspiring to induce aliens to illegally enter the Unites States for private financial gain.

Sippy Lal, 61 was arrested in 2012 along with co-defendants Mamta Sharma and Rani Singh-Lal on charges they ran an elaborate immigration-fraud scheme involving foreign nationals from India who paid money to have a sham marriage in order to get into the country. The trio recruited U.S. citizens in the Sacramento area in an effort to legalize their immigration status.

Despite the power outages and high winds in the South Shore, the Marriott Grand Residence Club was warm and cozy (with power!) on Thursday night, which made it the perfect first stop for TahoeChamber’s annual Winter Wine Walk Business After Hours Mixer (BAHM!). Nearly 100 guests began their tours at the Marriott Grand Residence Club with a taste from Crystal Basin Cellars before embarking on a tour to participating businesses. Tips for being prepared during Lake Tahoe's winter storms

Liberty Utilities is reminding customers to always be prepared for winter storms and possible power outages that may result from them.

“Although we’ve made significant progress in reducing electrical outages since acquiring the utility nearly four years ago, the reality is that a really big winter storm can impact our ability to keep the lights on,” according to Mike Smart, President of Liberty Utilities-California.

Heavenly Mountain Resort celebrates snowfall; planning for holiday events

Heavenly Mountain Resort is celebrating the five inches of fresh snow they received this weekend, and looking forward to a storm this week that is expected to drop a lot of snow at higher elevations.

Winter snow preparations completed by NDOT

As winter approaches northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation has completed annual winter preparations to help keep roads clear through the upcoming season.

“Roadway safety and mobility are our top priorities,” NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon explained. “Last winter, NDOT crews dedicated more than 22,000 hours to removing snow and ice from state roads in the Truckee Meadows. We’ll be out there again throughout this winter to clear roads of ice and snow.”
