Local students awarded scholarships from Soroptimist of South Lake Tahoe

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awarded $21,000 to local students at the Rewards for Excellence Scholarship Program on Wednesday, April 27, 2016.

Scholarships were awarded to students from Lake Tahoe Community College, South Tahoe and Whittell High Schools. Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe is an organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community and throughout the world by providing service.

El Dorado County names Poet Laureate

El Dorado Arts Council has inaugurated a Poet Laureate program for El Dorado County. This post, officially appointed by a conferring institution, is bestowed on a noted poet to honor his or her body of work and to celebrate poetry as an art form.

Taylor Graham was chosen by a panel of literary experts because of the caliber of her work, her engagement with poets and writers in the community, and the critical acclaim her work has garnered.

Local curling and skeleton bobsled athlete, Larry Sidney, will be featured as a guest reporter for Mountain Resort Television and their Lake Tahoe News Line featured on South Tahoe Now and seen on KAME-TV, My21TV.

Larry, a South Shore resident, is a member of Lake Tahoe Epic Curling, competing internationally with the Israel Curling Federation, and a competitive skeleton bobsled athlete for the Israeli team.

Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The Amgen Tour of California South Lake Tahoe Organizing Committee is seeking 300 volunteers for the combined stages for men and women on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

The men’s elite race Stage 5 will begin in Lodi, Calif. at 10 a.m., and finish around 3:45 p.m. at Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge in South Lake Tahoe totaling 132.4 miles. The women’s Stage 1 will start at 10:50 a.m. and finish approximately at 2:00 p.m. at Heavenly, totaling 72.7 miles.

Kudos: Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless thankful for community support of Inaugural Warm Room

On behalf of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH), I would like to thank our community for a successful inaugural season of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room and the first overnight homeless services in the Tahoe Region.

Our agency appreciates vital funding provided this winter by the El Dorado Community Foundation, Tahoe Magic, and Reliapro Painters, along with many other community partners.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Squaw Valley proposed for 2017 World Cup

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows as the proposed site of an Audi FIS Ski World Cup in 2017. U.S. Ski Team officials are supporting the return of World Cup ski racing to the Olympic venue of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for the first time since 1969.

1960's Green Lantern evolves into modern Coachman Hotel

A multi-million dollar remodel of the old Green Lantern Motel in South Lake Tahoe has been completed, and emerging out of the dust is the new and trendy Coachman Hotel.

Doors will open to the public on Wednesday, March 23.

The new owners of the hotel, Peter and Justin Watzka, bring with them years of hotel and hospitality management. Peter was the Executive VP of Ritz-Carlton Destination Club and VP of Marketing for Marriott Vacation Club International, while Justin was previously a director with Ritz-Carlton and Marriott Vacation Clubs in Florida and Asia.

Sacramento King's co-owner selling Tahoe home for $35 million

Mark Mastrov, a Sacramento Kings co-owner and founder of 24-Hour Fitness, is selling his waterfront Lake Tahoe home in Glenbrook, Nev., for $35 million.

New fee schedule and SnowGlobe on City Council agenda Tuesday

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will look at the new Master Fee schedule during the March 14 meeting, something they do annually. The proposed fees and charges for 2015-16 show no change for users of the recreation center or campground, a $2 to $3 increase in daily golf course fees, a $5 to $15 increase in golf course passes.

Soroptimists honor South Tahoe Middle School students

Twelve students from South Tahoe Middle School were honored for their essays during the annual Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Writing Festival.

The students had a topic based on their grade level: seventh graders wrote about "Privacy vs. National Security," while the eighth graders were challenged with writing about who the 2016 female Presidential candidate should be, and why.

City adds another location for electric car owners to charge up

Visitors to South Lake Tahoe have several options to charge their cars, with the newest location added in the City owned Heavenly Village parking garage.

The City partnered with ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging station company, and added a system on the first floor of the garage near the elevator. Users will need to have an account with ChargePoint.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and Lake Tahoe Community College graduate, Ryan Row (pen name: Alan Wor) has been officially announced as a winner in the "Writers of the Future" contest sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard. The contest, one of the most prestigious writing competitions, is in its 32nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction.

In a joint celebration, the two South Lake Tahoe area Soroptimist clubs honored students and women from the South Shore for their contributions to the community.

During the day the expo will be presented to students in South Lake Tahoe and the community is invited to a public session March 31 from 4:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Flash mob at Heavenly Village for #OneBillionRIsing

Over 60 women, men and children took their message to Heavenly Village on Valentine's Day as part of an international campaign to end violence against women. For the past several weeks, those community members have been rehearsing the dance routine they performed in front of a crowd near the gondola.

Organizer Hillary Wilson Huff is already planning the 2017 event and said that anyone interested can email her at sltflashmob@gmail.com to get more information.

William Hill opens new sportsbook inside MontBleu Resort

Just in the time for the biggest sports betting weekend of the year, MontBleu Resort on the South Shore has a new William Hill sportsbook. They had a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday to welcome customers and celebrate the new operation.

MontBleu became the latest location to offer a sportsbook operated by the international company which is based in England. There are 104 other locations in Nevada including the operations at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe.

One Billion Rising flashmob in South Lake Tahoe February 14

One Billion Rising is an international campaign launched to end domestic violence. Staggering statistics show that one in three women on earth will be beaten or raped during their lifetime, so with the world's population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

Community groups can now apply for grants from the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra club.

They are accepting applications that support programs and projects that align with their Mission to “Strengthen the lives of women and youth in our community and the world."

Disneyland to close attractions to make way for new Star Wars land

To make way for "Star Wars," Disneyland is about to launch its largest expansion ever, which means shutting down a significant chunk of the Anaheim theme park.

In January, 10 attractions and eateries will close — some temporarily, some permanently — only a few months after the resort hiked the price of annual passes as much as 31%. This spring, Disneyland's biggest rival, Universal Studios Hollywood, plans to unveil a widely anticipated Harry Potter attraction.

Kudos: Heavenly Mountain Resort adopts a day at Bread & Broth

Thanks to the generous Vail EpicPromise Grant program funds awarded to Bread & Broth, 12 Monday evening meals are served annually through B&B’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” program. On a monthly basis, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate hosting a dinner and sending a sponsor volunteer crew to work with the B&B volunteers to provide a hot, nutritious meal and “giveaway” bags to South Tahoe Community members dealing with food insecurity.

Brooke Hernandez named South Lake Tahoe Realtor of the Year

Brooke Hernandez of Chase International’s Zephyr Cove office was recently honored as Realtor of the Year by the South Tahoe Association of Realtors. The award is based on a member’s community and industry involvement.

Hernandez, a South Shore native, has more than ten years experience in real estate and has been with Chase International for six years. She currently serves as the president of the association, in which she has been actively involved for several years.

Lake Tahoe Community College celebrates soccer programs' successes

When Nick Arbelaez moved to South Lake Tahoe with his fiancee Stephanie Shamo, he was taking the Assistant Soccer Coach position at LTCC and she was headed to Barton Health.

After Head Coach Ben Wade and LTCC parted ways mid-season, Arbelaez stepped in as interim head coach, leading the Coyotes to the final four for California Community Colleges.

At Tuesday's board meeting, Arbelaez was introduced to the trustees along with
other coaches and volunteers that have helped both the men's and women's soccer teams have early successes in the young programs.

South Lake Tahoe hockey team raising funds for international finals in Canada

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Peewee Team is the 2015 Pacific District Regional Silver Stick Champions in the Peewee B division which has earned them a spot at the International Finals in Ontario, Canada. In order to help the young boys and girls with travel expenses, the team has started a fundraising campaign selling "Tahoe Strong" T-Shirts.

All 14 team members have excelled not only on the ice, but in the classroom according to fundraiser organizer Tye Watson. They players come from South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, Reno, Carson City and Minden.

Many of us have contributed to local school sports teams by buying candy bars, raffle tickets or attending fundraiser dinners, but how many of us have bought soap for ourselves, provided for a needy child in Africa at the same time we're also supporting the teams?

The Loft at Heavenly Village opening soon with magic, food and drinks

The Loft at Heavenly Village has been in the works for months, and now it's just a few weeks from opening day on December 15.

The new indoor, year-round live theater is in a newly created space above the current Heavenly Village Cinemas created by PR Entertainment. It will include a bar and lounge, 107 seat theater and Italian restaurant featuring Chef Lisa Devenchezi-Miller, who also owns of Capisce? in South Lake Tahoe.

Tommy Moose, symbol of caring, donated to local police and fire departments

South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire departments, and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office will be handing out stuffed moose to children they come across in their jobs who are facing times of stress, uncertainty and anxiety.

Members of Women of the Moose, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Chapter 408 donated a box of Tommy Moose to the departments. Tommy Moose personifies one of the tenants of the Loyal Order of Moose: caring for children.

“The healing begins with helping kids at the scene of a serious event—starting right away makes good sense,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler.

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

Thirty South Lake Tahoe non-profits were given a share of $55,600 on Thursday, bringing the total the American Century Golf Championships have donated to the community this year to $107,100.

Soroptimists looking for community minded young women for award

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are accepting applications for the Violet Richardson Award. Each year the two local Soroptimist clubs honor young women in the community ages 14-17 who are engaged in volunteer deeds such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; or working to end discrimination or poverty.

Deadline approaching for Celebrity Golf donations

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will be accepting applications from local nonprofits for distributions of $55,600 until Monday, October 26, 2015.

The money comes from the 26th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament held in South Lake Tahoe in July.
