SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy and their State and local partners invite the public to a community meeting to discuss opportunities to help address the housing crisis in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

CTC owns two properties at the one, one 9.75 acres and the other 1.6 acres in 1989 for the purpose of using the non-sensitive portions of the lots for purposes consistent with the now current area plan.

Winners announced at Barton Health's Festival of Trees & Lights

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The designer holiday-themed trees have filled the room all weekend at the Barton Health Festival and Trees & Lights. There is still one day left for the public to view them as the annual event wraps up on Sunday, December 8.

All of the trees are beautiful and it was a tough decision by a group of community judges to come up with winners of five distinguished categories.

Local teen scholar invited to Delegation for Diplomacy in South Africa

Local teen and Lake Tahoe Community College student Laney Terrell has been invited by the International Scholar Laureate Program to join a delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy that will be traveling to South Africa in spring 2020.

"I am so excited for this opportunity to see how other democracies work and represent my Hometown," Terrell said.

South Lake Tahoe kick-off meeting for City’s new Climate Action Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to a meeting on the City’s first-ever Climate Action Plan on Wednesday, December 11 from 6:00 p.m.to 7:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at the airport.

In April 2017 the South Lake Tahoe City Council signed a proclamation to move the City’s entire electrical grid to clean energy by 2032, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent below baseline by 2040.

Second cannabis microbusiness approved by South Lake Tahoe City Council

The Regional Transportation Plan lays out the vision for the transportation system at Lake Tahoe and focuses on transit, trails, technology, and communities to support the environment, economy, quality of life, and visitor experience.

South Lake Tahoe city manager resigns, takes new position in Big Bear Lake

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - He has been at the helm of the City for almost a year, but Frank Rush has submitted his resignation and is headed south to take on a new position in Big Bear Lake, California.

Rush was sworn in as the City of South Lake Tahoe city manager on December 6, 2018, and will be leaving on January 24, starting in Big Bear Lake on February 3, 2020. Their City Council approved him during their meeting on Monday.

South Tahoe High students awarded for their anti-vaping/anti-drug posters

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With vaping a growing problem in local schools, the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (DFC) recently held an anti-vaping, anti-drug poster contest at the high school.

Six South Tahoe High School students were recognized last week for their creativity and artwork, and three of the entries will be used in an anti-vaping campaign to draw awareness to the growing problem not only in South Lake Tahoe but across the globe.

UC Davis TERC conducting survey on possible Mysis shrimp dog treats

Billions of invasive Mysis shrimp, introduced in the 1960s, live in Lake Tahoe, where they eat native zooplankton that historically helped keep the lake blue and clear while also serving as a food source for native fish.

If one removes the shrimp from Lake Tahoe, what is done with them?

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is conducting a five-minute survey of all dog owners to see if they would consider a product for their dog made from Mysis shrimp.

Local students honored by DAR Chapter

On Thursday evening, November 21, members of Lake Tahoe Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and guests gathered to honor two local high school students with the prestigious DAR Good Citizen Award.

This award has been presented to deserving high school students since 1934. However, the award has never been presented in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin because, until February 2019, there was no DAR chapter in the area.

Prescribed fire operations continue in Tahoe Basin, weather and staffing permitting

South Lake Tahoe Library display celebrates 100 years of the American Legion

The South Lake Tahoe Branch of the El Dorado County Library will feature a display celebrating and honoring 100 years of the American Legion through November and December 2019.

The centennial display includes memorabilia from local American Legion Post 795, Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The display can be viewed during open library hours Monday through Saturday. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Basin Wildfire Pre-Attack Plans funded by Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation

The Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has announced a donation of $18,057 to the Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) to enhance wildfire suppression capabilities on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. This donation will result in the expansion of strategic and tactical Wildfire Pre Attack plans covering the entire Lake Tahoe Basin. Pre Attack Plans help first responders by identifying critical infrastructure, vulnerable population groups, evacuation routes, water sources, Temporary Refuge Areas, and locations where forests have been thinned before a wildfire strikes.

Collaborative efforts in South Lake Tahoe and the County keep 30 people from being homeless

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has been recognized for setting the stage as the county-wide homeless strategic planning process is about to begin. They utilized a one-time grant of $30,000 to help 30 people in 17 households avoid homelessness in El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe. In the last four months, efforts by the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless and the El Dorado Opportunity Knocks Continuum of Care (EDOK) have utilized almost the whole grant that was provided through El Dorado County Health and Human Services

Douglas County Commissioners to discuss end to monthly meeting in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Currently, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners meet once a month at Lake Tahoe, but if Commissioner John Engels gets his way, this week's meeting will be their last at the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) building.

They have been meeting at the lake on the third Thursday of the month, but Engel's presentation will suggest this meeting take place in Minden just as their other three monthly meetings do.

Column: Marching forward with forest health

Last week our collective memories returned to that terrible November morning as a raging wildfire swept through Paradise, California. We woke that morning to images of wholesale devastation as fearsome winds drove racing flames from one town and one home to the next. We were horrified to watch videos of citizens running for their lives, desperately trying to escape the smoke and flames that were engulfing everything in their path. Eighty-five people lost their lives—the deadliest fire in California history— in what we now call the Camp Fire.

Local man files temporary injunction; South Lake Tahoe cannabis permit process on hold

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is another delay in cannabis businesses being able to move forward in South Lake Tahoe.

Local business owner John Runnels filed a temporary injunction against the City of South Lake Tahoe, the City Council and the Development Services Director Kevin Fabino in Superior Court in Sacramento Friday afternoon. That action has put a temporary halt to all cannabis-related permits being processed in the city until a December 20 court date.

Volunteers sought as Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe opens new South Lake Tahoe office

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) will be opening an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and will be celebrating their grand opening on December 10, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The new location will be in mid-town adjacent to the former Sato Sushi, 3438 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. They will be offering a full list of services from cat adoptions to free vaccination clinics.

Trees vandalized at popular South Lake Tahoe lakefront park

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine pine trees have been vandalized at Regan Beach in South Lake Tahoe in what appears to be an attempt to cut them down. Each tree has a wide swath of chopping action across it with boring holes at the base.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Parks Department was notified of the damage on Saturday, November 9 and a police report was generated. Staff is calling the destruction "a wanton act of vandalism and abuse of public trust."

The Jeffrey Pines are estimated to be about 20-years-old.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was one of the largest crowds ever gathered at the American Legion to celebrate and honor local veterans. Part of that crowd were two 99-year-old veterans and a 2000 STHS graduate who will soon be a commander in the US Navy, veterans of other wars, family, first responders and community members.

South Lake Tahoe WWII veteran rides in B-17 again after 75 years

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Danny Francisco was still in high school when he enlisted to serve his country, and just days after graduation he was on his way to train.

The 95-year-old Army Air Corps veteran was given a chance to fly again in a B-17, 75 years after his last flight.

Phil Ward of South Lake Tahoe was delivering meals to local senior citizens when he met Danny and heard his story. Phil's son Eric created the video in this story which features an interview and flight.

Possible Lake Tahoe transportation funding solutions focus at upcoming ONE TAHOE meetings

Most people recognize the fact that transportation around Lake Tahoe needs to improve, but with those solutions comes a hefty price tag. Local transportation officials have been meeting with the public through ONE TAHOE to get ideas on how to fund the estimated $3.12 billion regional plans over the next 20 years.

Current public and private funding sources during this period are expected to be about $1.58 billion. This leaves a $1.53 billion shortfall in the transportation funding needed through 2040.

Prescribed fire operations continue in Lake Tahoe Basin

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - If weather and conditions permit, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, along with California State Parks are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

Caltrans and partners officially open first of two roundabouts in Meyers

Caltrans addressed what they reported to be an increase of accidents at the intersection of US50 and SR89 with a $7.3 million roundabout in Meyers, and today there was a ribbon-cutting with local partners to officially open it up.

What used to be a T-intersection with one stop sign is now a three-leg roundabout with a bypass lane. Years of studies, planning, environmental reviews, and engineering led to this past summer's build by Q&D Construction.

Grand Jury indicts four men at forefront of marijuana grows linked to El Dorado County deputy's killing

As soon as word spread that El Dorado County Deputy Brian Ishmael was shot and killed in the line of duty on October 23, multiple federal agencies were mobilized and went to work to not only find out who was directly responsible for the death, but also to uncover those in charge of the illegal marijuana grows at the forefront of the case.

Exquisite Grill expands into the Tahoe Seasons Resort; Stop by for special food nights

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past ten years, the community has come to know David Mullen and his Exquisite Grill through special events calling for roasted pig and barbeque. Now, the popular caterer is operating out of the Tahoe Seasons Resort in South Lake Tahoe with an expanded menu.

Mullen has been providing room service at the resort along with box lunches and a robust menu for six months, and now, after a busy summer, he is now focusing on specialty nights at the Fireside Bar located in the newly remodeled lobby along with a regular menu.
