June 19, 2016 - 10:00am Authors Wanda and Richard Canton will speak on their book, Bodie Railway & Lumber Company: Railroad in the Sky 1881–1917, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, June 19, at 10:00 a.m.
The Cantons’ book tells the story of the dream of bringing timbers and cordwood to the remote mining town of Bodie, Calif. by train. In 1880 the mining town of Bodie was located at over 8300' in the eastern Sierra. The plans for a 32-mile narrow gauge railway developed through hard work and some luck as well.

Staff and volunteers honored during South Lake Tahoe police ceremony
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/27/2016 - 9:51amThe South Lake Tahoe Police Department, in conjunction with Memorial Day and the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Week, held its annual award ceremony Thursday.
In a very moving ceremony, late SLTPD Officer Mark Hounsell was honored for distinguished service. Hounsell and his wife Jeanne were killed in a single vehicle crash October 17, 2015. Two memorial shadow boxes were presented, one staying at the police department, the other going to the Hounsell's place of worship, Lifepoint Church in Minden, Nev.
Couple arrested after man stabbed during domestic dispute
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/10/2016 - 4:31pmDouglas County Sheriff's Office deputies were called out to the Sunridge area of Douglas County on Monday night at 5:55 p.m., and once there found a man who had been stabbed in the hand.
Jacob Bernard, 26, was combative with East For Fire personnel and DCSO deputies as they attempted to render aide. Bernard was also uncooperative, and during the investigation, kicked a deputy. The deputy was not injured.
Two men sought in Northern Nevada Coin Shop burglary

At 1:50 a.m., Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies responded to an alarm at the business. When they arrived they discovered unknown suspects had forced entry into the building through an exterior door. One inside, the suspects entered the business and stole coins and jewelry.
Nevada solar energy project to supply power to California

“This project continues Liberty’s commitment to renewable energy sources,” states Greg Sorensen, President of Liberty Utilities-CA. “When completed later this year, the solar project will meet 25 percent of our customers’ energy needs.”
The Luning Solar Energy Center (aka the “Luning Project”) will be a 50-megawatt project.

Even though construction began on the original tracks and train in 1869, people can still enjoy riding the old steam and diesel trains from Carson City to Virginia City, Nevada.

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.
At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
DCSO Explorer Scouts volunteer at Pebble Beach golf tournament
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/24/2016 - 7:56pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorers just finished a week-long detail in Pebble Beach, California working the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament to earn money for their POST.
Thirteen DCSO Explorers handled pedestrian control, traffic control and security details in and around the famous 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach. They saw golf professionals like Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as well as amateurs like Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Carson Daly and Larry The Cable Guy.

Dr. Stoll, an icon of the Tahoe area, practiced dentistry for over 50 years in both South Lake Tahoe and Minden.

Douglas County bomb squad called for suspicious item found in dumpster
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/20/2016 - 5:42pmOn Wednesday afternoon, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a suspicious item found in a dumpster at 1380 Centerville Road in Gardnerville, Nev. The reporting party told them the item appeared to be a stick of dynamite.
When the Douglas County Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team arrived they determined the item to be a an old smoke grenade/gopher bomb.
Two storms headed to Lake Tahoe this week
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/18/2016 - 6:32pmAs one weather system leaves Lake Tahoe, the next one is waiting off the coast of California and heading to the Sierra overnight. The National Weather Service says upper elevations will see more snow that the past storm, with rain for the valleys. South Lake is at an elevation that rests in between rain and snow.
Most snow impacts will be confined to areas above 7,000 feet, a rain/snow mix around 6500 feet and all rain in lower valley locations will create slick road conditions. The highest elevations can see a foot of snow, with 1 to 4" above 6,500 feet, and one inch around the lake.
Douglas County Commissioners and Manager Jim Nichols parting ways

Officially, a mutual separation agreement will be presented at the next Board of County Commissioner’s meeting on January 21, 2016. This meeting will be held at Stateline.

At 11:10 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from a home in the 1300 block of Banner Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos neighborhood. A woman had called, saying she had been battered and strangled by her husband.

The appointment comes as a result of several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam.
South Lake Tahoe hockey team raising funds for international finals in Canada

In order to help the young boys and girls with travel expenses, the team has started a fundraising campaign selling "Tahoe Strong" T-Shirts.
All 14 team members have excelled not only on the ice, but in the classroom according to fundraiser organizer Tye Watson. They players come from South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, Reno, Carson City and Minden.

One dead, four injured, and five cars damaged in crashes at SR88 and Mottsville Lane

Gardnerville resident Janis Hill, 64, died when her BMW entered the intersection at the same time as a Ford Taurus driven by 22-year-old Holly Ducoing of Carson City. The two cars collided and then hit a Honda SUV driven by Minden resident Robin Owens, 64, who was stopped at the intersection.
Hill had been traveling eastbound on Waterloo Lane and Ducoing was southbound on SR88 approaching the intersection with Mottsville Lane.
Fatal crash at Highway 88 and Mottsville in Douglas County
Submitted by paula on Fri, 11/27/2015 - 10:01pmGARDNERVILLE, Nev. — Emergency crews responded to the scene of a fatal traffic accident at Highway 88 and Mottsville that occurred at 6:28 p.m. Friday.
One person was killed and four people were injured in the accident, which was reported at 6:28 p.m., according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Duncan Dauber. It was the second serious crash at the intersection Friday.
Three vehicles — a red Ford Taurus, a silver BMW and a white Honda SUV — were involved in the accident.
Reno man dies in single car accident on Kingsbury Grade
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/26/2015 - 11:25amA 52-year-old Reno man died Wednesday night in a single vehicle accident on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said.
The victim was driving a Budget truck westbound when, for an undetermined reason, the vehicle went off the side of the road, hitting a wall. The crash is being investigated as a possible medical issue, said Trooper Dan Lopez.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane in both directions as part of the crash investigation.
New Douglas County Deputy Sheriff sworn in

Derek Short graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Criminal Justice. He will start his career with DCSO in the Jail Division.

The topic currently at the forefront is Buckeye Creek Reservoir, located in the eastern portion of Douglas County. BLM has most of the land in this undeveloped area, and the Douglas County Sewer Improvement District (DCSID) owns 1,001 of those acres.
Betty Duke - February 27, 1925 - October 29, 2015

Betty was born on Feb. 27, 1925, in Monroe, La., to Albert and Clara Olsen.
Betty was an active volunteer with many organizations. She enjoyed reading, traveling, playing piano and accordion, dancing, and the outdoors, but especially anything involving her family.
Trio arrested in Carson Valley after theft at Walmart

23-year-old Robert Michael Dean, 24-year-old Dylan Andrew Mitts and 22-year-old Elizabeth Kathrine Spandau were arrested after an investigation into a theft at the Wal-Mart on Grant Way in Gardnerville, Nev.
Ex-felon arrested for failing to register and being in possession of a firearm
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/28/2015 - 1:55pmDeputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint of loud music and firearms being discharged in the 1200 block of Slate Road in Minden, Nev. on October 23, 2015.
Once on the scene, they found Alfredo Ferreira, 54, at the home with several weapons. During the deputys' investigation they found that Ferreira is a sex offender who had failed to register. An arrest and search warrant were obtained and they found several weapons in his home.
Ferreira was arrested without incident and the weapons were seize. Ferreira has since posted bail.

An large crowd of family, friends and law enforcement paid their respects both along the route from the funeral home in Carson City to the church and at the church.

There will be a memorial service for South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife, Jeanne Hounsell on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at LifePoint Church in Minden, Nev.
The couple was killed along with a family friend in a single vehicle rollover accident near Fallon, Nev on Saturday, October 17. Hounsell's four children were also in the car, but survived with minor to moderate injuries.
Illinois woman identified in crash that killed South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Hounsell
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/19/2015 - 8:11pmLaura Fisher of Washington, Illinois has been identified as the third victim in Saturday's single vehicle rollover accident on Highway 50 in Churchill County that also claimed the life of South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Mark Hounsell and his wife Jeanne.
The 33-year-old Fisher was visiting the Hounsells.
The Nevada Highway Patrol investigation details indicate a white 2004 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Minden resident Mark Hounsell, 42, was traveling westbound on US Highway 50. Six other occupants were in the vehicle including his wife Jeanne, 34, Fisher, four children.

The NHP confirmed Sunday afternoon that three people died in the accident.

A preliminary report shows that 27-year-old Jarek Kozlowski died of respiratory failure at the hospital October 16 at 7:40 p.m. DSCO said the report shows Kozlowski did not as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting incident.

Douglas investigators: Elderly Gardnerville couple die in apparent suicide pact

Investigators say the couple made a suicide pact.
William Lewis, 86, died at Renown Medical Center in Reno. His wife, Phyllis Lewis, 82, was found dead inside the couple's Edlesborough Circle home, said Sgt. Pat Brooks.

The Tahoe Homeless Coalition will be the recipient of funds raised at "Homebrew for the Homeless," and event for the whole family on Saturday, September 26.
There will be live music, a chili cook-off, horseback rides, games, bounce house, poker run and a Homebrew Beer Competition.
The Leigh Wayne Miller DDRC ranch in Minden will be the scene for a day of fun and fundraising starting at 1 p.m. The horse ranch is located at 1625 Chowbuck Street.
Sheriff asks for public's help in identifying person of interest in theft
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/28/2015 - 11:36pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in a theft at the Big 5 Store located at 1770 US Hwy 395, Minden, NV.
On August 5, 2015 at approximately 4:05 pm, the suspect, along with 6 juveniles entered the store. The adult male purchased a candy bar while the juveniles were in the football section of the store. As the adult was paying for the candy bar, the juveniles removed products from their packaging and hid the merchandise on their person before walking out of the store without paying.
DUI pursuit in Douglas County ends with damaged patrol cars

On August 16, 2015 at 5:13 p.m., deputies responded to a reported DUI call about a driver in a red Dodge pickup. The vehicle was located and stopped in the parking lot of Lampe Park where deputies began a DUI investigation. The driver of the truck, 56-year-old Michael Clifford Stewart of Gardnerville, NV, started his vehicle and drove away from the deputies.

Among those veterans being recognized is Dr. Kyle Swanson, an orthopedic surgeon with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sport Medicine in Carson City and Lake Tahoe. The Army veteran served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan where he performed surgeries on soldiers and Afghan civilians injured during the conflict of war.

Kyeremeh completed several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam. He will begin his career with the department in the Jail Division.
Deputy Kyeremeh served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years achieving the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He is married with 2 children.

Matthew Schlanger was sworn in on Monday, July 13, 2015 in a ceremony held at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden, Nevada.
The appointment comes as a result of several months of testing and evaluation consisting of a physical agility test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical exam.

A woman was shopping at Smith's on June 21 at approximately 5:00 p.m. when she turned away from her cart that contained her purse. A man bumped into her and walked away. A short time later the woman noticed her wallet was missing from her purse.
