South Tahoe High teacher attempting to meet Duran Duran

Popular South Tahoe High English teacher Bridey Heidel is trying to attract the attention of musicians Duran Duran and television host Ellen DeGeneres.

Why you ask?

To understand we need to take a step back in time to the year 1983 when a young Bridey was in 7th grade. She had found the band Duran Duran at a very difficult time in her young life and they helped her cope with a life full of trauma as well as moving from town to town. By the time she graduated high school she had been in 26 schools.

History Sunday: The 1860s town of Rowlands on the South Shore

As the City of South Lake Tahoe celebrates the 50th anniversary of its incorporation, there is a long forgotten town that was once along the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Travelers came west in droves in 1849 after the discovery of gold near Placerville. Many used the Tahoe Wagon Road which is known as Pioneer Trail today. When the first major silver deposit in the United States was discovered in Virginia City in 1859, many of those same gold hunters traveled over that same road into Nevada.

Pot Smoke And Mirrors: Vaporizer Pens Hide Marijuana Use

It's a sunny afternoon at Kelly's Collective, a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, and Nikki Esquibel is getting stoned. But you wouldn't know it.

The 19-year-old, who has a medical prescription for marijuana, is "smoking" pot with a handheld vaporizer, or a vape pen. It's sleek, black, and virtually indistinguishable from a high-end e-cigarette.

That's the point, says Esquibel. "I use it mostly around my neighborhood. It's easy to hide." The vapor coming from the device doesn't even have much of an odor.

She moved to South Lake Tahoe over five years ago and has been a stay at home mom. The store, she says, is a long time coming and will fill a void in the area.

Five Questions: Meet your neighbor Denise Haerr

We have started a new weekly feature on South Tahoe Now: Five Questions, Meet Your Neighbor. Get to know your neighbors, the every day people you see at the store, on a walk or at the library.

1. Why did you choose South Lake Tahoe as your home?

My husband, Steve, had been coming to Tahoe since he was two. Once we had a family, we began spending our summer vacations here too. After he retired, we knew we could live anywhere and South Lake Tahoe met all our criteria. AND we knew our sons would visit if we lived some place really cool.

1962 record making swim across Lake Tahoe relived

Some people, when they first see Lake Tahoe, think how it'd be nice to boat on top of the glass like water. Others imagine fishing on the lake stocked with big fish, while yet others think about how nice it would be to sit at the quiet and scenic shore and enjoy the sun and the view.

To nine year old Erline Christopherson, all she thought when first saw the crystal blue waters was how she'd like to swim across it. The dream was born that day in 1955.

Editorial: Vote "YES" on Measure L

Measure L is the Library Special Tax on the ballot this year. Twenty years ago the South Lake Tahoe voters passed a library tax where those who owned parcels in the area would be charged $20/parcel per year for the next 20 years to fund the library.

Well, that time period is up so the tax is on the ballot once again. This is not a new tax, just a request for taxpayers to continue paying the same.

Although I must admit they do not, for the most part, have to deal
with the TRPA and councils that don't have the best interest of their
own community at heart. Now I am not saying that our council is
totally dysfunctional, only a little. Most everything that is getting

RTO Honors South Lake Tahoe Soldier at Patriots' Luncheon

The mother of a South Lake Tahoe soldier was honored Tuesday at the Reno-Tahoe Open "Patriots Luncheon" at Montreux Golf and Country Club in southwest Reno. The audience also heard from an Air Force pilot who spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The beautifully drawn portrait was the first time Gold Star mom Patricia Smith has seen her son whole and smiling since he was killed in action in Iraq in 2008.
