Undersheriff Randy Peshon retires leaving a legacy of programs for the community

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There will be some very big shoes to fill when finding a replacement for retiring El Dorado County Undersheriff Randy Peshon. On Tuesday, June 30, Peshon will be putting his badge on for the very last time. For 43 years he's been in some level of law enforcement, the last 33 years in El Dorado County.

During his career in El Dorado County, Peshon has been at the forefront of change from implementing a change in culture at the jail in South Lake Tahoe to getting the new Public Safety Facility built under budget and ahead of schedule.

Police investigation underway after black doll found hanging in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating a doll that was hanging from a power line in the Tahoe Sierra neighborhood on Tuesday.

When SLTPD officers arrived at the corner of Rose and Lodi Avenues they found a black doll hanging with a heavy string around its neck. With the assistance of Liberty Utilities, the doll was quickly removed.

South Lake Tahoe police and fire rescue ducklings from storm drain

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It wasn't your normal, every day type of call for service that the South Lake Tahoe Police Departments (SLTPD) and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to on Monday night, but it was one of the happier ones.

On June 22, SLTPD officers were notified of some ducklings who were stuck in a storm drain and they called SLTFR Engine 1 for assistance in getting the eight ducklings out. All were removed from the drain and transported to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC).

South Lake Tahoe teen arrested after allegedly stealing truck

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An 18-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on Saturday, June 20 after allegedly stealing a truck from outside a home near the Y.

The 2008 Toyota Tacoma was parked overnight and when the owners woke up they say the truck was missing. According to their neighbor's security camera, the truck was taken at 3:30 a.m.

Teens arrested after allegedly attacking man on South Lake Tahoe beach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two 14-year-old boys from South Lake Tahoe were arrested on Tuesday on several charges after attacking a man on the beach after a barrage of offensive words yelled at people on the beach.

At 4:25 p.m. on June 16, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were called to what is known as the Timber Cove Marina and Beach on a report of an assault.

Two men arrested after South Lake Tahoe high-speed chase

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two men were arrested after they led officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on a high-speed chase through the Tahoe Sierra neighborhood on Monday, June 15, 2020.

At approximately 4:45 p.m., SLTPD attempted to pull over a Chevy at the intersection of Black Bart Avenue and Pioneer Trail. Inside the vehicle were two suspects that had allegedly been seen with a weapon. According to police, the occupants were prohibited from being in possession of a gun.

At that time there were 30 sworn male officers who were chosen from a list of more than 400 applicants who wanted to be part of the first police department for the new city. They were tested in Seal Beach, Roseville, and South Lake Tahoe then interviewed in Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Multiple agencies respond to missing child at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) responded to the Hard Rock Casino in Stateline at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10 after they were called about a missing two-year-old girl.

The child's mother had checked into the hotel on Tuesday with her two teenage sons and her daughter. She left the room at 8:00 a.m. to attend a conference being held at the hotel and left the kids sleeping. When she returned at 10:00 a.m. she found the two teens still asleep but her daughter was missing.

Two men rescued from Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsize

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two men were pulled from the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsized late Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 6, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue's Marine 17 was dispatched to the water off of Baldwin Beach for possible kayakers in distress. One of the kayakers was able to make a call and the GPS coordinates put the two men several hundred yards off the shore between Baldwin Beach and Emerald Bay.

South Lake Tahoe SWAT operation leads to arrest of local man

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Several people in the Bijou neighborhood saw and heard something on Thursday they normally aren't a witness to. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams were called out to an apartment on Spruce Avenue to arrest a suspect with a known violent history and a history with weapons, according to police.

They were there to arrest 45-year-old Edgar Bringas Zavala, a suspect in a domestic violence and terrorist threat case from the night before.

Even now, a week after the on-camera murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, by police officers, and all of the fallout felt nationwide, I’m still trying to understand the world, how to respond as a community leader, and how to explain it to my kids. All of the frustration, sadness, and outrage — it all seems so familiar since we’ve all been witness to these acts before, all seen and read and heard about cases of unarmed black people and other people of color killed in police custody when it was clearly avoidable.

South Lake Tahoe robbery and car theft leads to arrest of two suspects near Fresh Pond

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two different crimes in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday turned out to be related and the alleged suspects were arrested near Fresh Pond, California.

On May 20 at approximately 2:50 p.m., officers from South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the 7-11 at 2620 Lake Tahoe Boulevard after receiving a call of a robbery. Upon arrival, the clerk told officers a man and a woman had walked into the store with black masks on, approached the counter where the female demanded money.

City Council amends emergency ordinance that fined second homeowners

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council voted Tuesday to amend their Emergency Order No. 1 from April that authorized administrative citations and fines of $1,000 for violations of the Governor's Stay at Home Order.

The City will not be fining second homeowners who visit their home in South Lake Tahoe but they will continue to fine those found renting out vacation homes until the Governor's ban on non-essential travel is amended.

Man transported via CalStar after Saturday morning crash in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 32-year-old man was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno early Saturday morning after his vehicle crashed into a tree near the intersection of San Jose Avenue and Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

Man who was arrested with stolen vehicle in Douglas County allegedly posed as FBI agent

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A man posing as an FBI agent allegedly stole an Audi in Los Angeles on April 29 and ended up crashing that same vehicle in Douglas County on May 1.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO), Fabian Campos drove that car into Carson City where the Carson City Sheriff’s Office spotted the suspected stolen vehicle and a pursuit ensued on US395. DCSO took over when it crossed the county line.

Semi-truck rollover at the Y in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A semi-truck heading from Oakland, California to Dayton, Nevada rolled over at the Y in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning.

At 11:04 a.m., South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire Rescue Departments responded to the intersection of US50 and Emerald Bay Road to a call of a tractor-trailer rollover.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney, the driver of the semi was heading northbound on Emerald Bay Road when he took the right turn to go east on US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard at a faster speed than the turn allows.

South Lake Tahoe coach facing federal child pornography charges

Timothy Daniel Mackey was arrested without incident by the FBI and U.S. Marshals at his home during the search.

Man rescued from Lake Tahoe after cries for help heard from shore

RENO, Nev. – Peter Lucas, 35, of Reno, was arrested yesterday and appeared in court today for allegedly stealing hundreds of surgical masks from a supply cart at the Ioannis A. Lougaris VA Medical Center (VA Medical Center) in Reno.

Woman arrested after allegedly licking items at South Lake Tahoe grocery store

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe woman was arrested on Tuesday, April 7 after store employees allegedly found her licking items, and licking her fingers before putting things into her shopping cart.

The mid-town Safeway at the corner of Johnson and Lake Tahoe Boulevards called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) after an employee said they spotted 53-year-old Jennifer Walker putting pieces of jewelry from the store on her hands and licking them.

According to SLTPD, Walker began to load her cart with merchandise from the store after licking her hands.

Warm Room expands and relocates to assist South Lake Tahoe homeless

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) as relocated its Warm Room operations to the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center in order to provide a 24/7 shelter for the most vulnerable residents until at least April 30.

In addition to their expanded operations they have also made the following changes:

● Set up 8 isolation bays for people experiencing non-COVID-19 symptoms.
● Providing 22 private motel rooms for our vulnerable seniors and those experiencing complex underlying health conditions.

Washoe County reports their first death of a resident from COVID-19

In a Monday morning press conference, Washoe County updated the community on the current COVID-19 situation as they continue to urge residents to stay at home to prevent its spread.

The first Washoe County resident died from COVID-19 over the weekend. He was in his 49s and the case is under investigation. It is unknown at this time if the man has underlying health conditions.

“We’re devastated to learn that a Washoe County resident has died due to COVID-19,” said Kevin Dick, District Health Officer for Washoe County. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time.”

City of South Lake Tahoe now has power to fine those violating "Stay at Home" order

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe issued an emergency order Friday morning, one that gives them the power to issue administrative citations to those who violate California Governor Newsom's 'stay at home' order.

“We are taking this crisis seriously and it is important that those who don’t, know there can be consequences to ignoring the Governor’s orders,” said Interim City Manager Brad Kilger, “This is about keeping our community safe, and that’s what this city is going to do.”
