Roadwork on Black Bart, Martin and Barbara Avenues, expect delays
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/15/2016 - 10:11amOn August 23 and 24, El Dorado County road crews will be in the area of Black Bart, Barbara and Martin Avenues in South Lake Tahoe to do slurry seal work.
They will implement daytime reversing traffic controls in the area and those using the roads can expect delays up to ten minutes. These dates are estimates and are subject to change due to weather or other variables.
Nighttime lane restrictions begin near Hwy 50/395 in Carson City

Expect delays on Highway 89 from Tahoe to Truckee
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/30/2016 - 6:44pmExpect delays of up to 15 minutes over the next several weeks as a pavement rehabilitation project begins on Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows.
The project consists of grinding down the existing highway and filling it with hot mix asphalt in order to improve the ride for motorists and cyclists and to extend the life of the roadway.
The affected area is from a half-mile north of the “Y” intersection with Highway 28 in Tahoe City to just north of Alpine Meadows Road.

Hwy 89 road project on West Shore switches to nighttime schedule
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/12/2016 - 6:06pmNow that the 4th of July holiday has passed, construction on the Caltrans Hwy 89 project along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe is now on an overnight schedule and will remain so for the next several weeks during the peak summer season, the department announced today.
Contractor Road and Highway Builders now works a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. shift during the week and 10:00 p.m. Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Monday. That schedule is expected to continue until August 15. Completion of the project was originally targeted for the end of this season, but some work now will extend into 2017.

The $70.1 million water-quality improvement project is building new drainage facilities to collect and treat stormwater runoff, adding curbs and gutters, widening the highway and repaving an eight-mile section of Highway 89 between Tahoma and Tahoe City. Work this season will focus on the remaining four miles of the project between Eagle Rock and Granlibakken Road.

While the "winter" comment may not be as it once was, there is no question about "road construction" as it now goes from May through October.
Part of living in the mountains is sharing our best weather months with construction workers, road controls and traffic cones. Residents get that. But what drivers went through during the 2015 construction on highways 50 and 89 was not only inexcusable, it was preventable.

Project: State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway will be resurfaced. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

Motorists can also expect one-way traffic from McKinney Drive to Madden Creek around the clock from 8 p.m. Tuesday to noon Friday for roadway excavation.
Roadwork at Cave Rock to cause delays next week
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/21/2015 - 7:35pmHeavy rains in February caused part of the rock face at Cave Rock to fall into the lanes of traffic on Highway 50. A temporary fix was completed at that time.
Depending on the weather, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) plans on closing two lanes in order to further evaluate the damage and secure the Cave Rock rock face and slope on U.S. 50, Lake Tahoe following recent rockfall.

Highway 89 construction this summer worries business owners
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/01/2015 - 10:07pmWhile the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.
During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.

Caltrans will be working on Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson and they are holding an open house about the project on Wednesday.
The South Lake Tahoe community to the informational meeting on Wednesday, April 1 at South Tahoe High School in the Student Union Conference Rooms. The school is located at 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The student Union is located in the middle of the campus just beyond the back of the gyms.
Caltrans staff will be on hand to answer questions about the project.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/15/2015 - 9:33pmAs the incoming Chair of the 15-member Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board, this promises to be a hopeful and exciting year. 2015 will be full of opportunities, but also challenges, for the continued protection of Lake Tahoe.
The number one priority among our challenges is funding shortfalls. Federal and state funding that has paid for environmental restoration and protection efforts at Lake Tahoe for years is drying up and new approaches need to be pursued.
Kingsbury Grade is reopening to through traffic on Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/06/2014 - 10:26pmKingsbury Grade, which has been closed at the summit due to a $15M road construction project, is scheduled to open on Tuesday, October 7 at 6 a.m.
Construction work will continue after Tuesday's reopening for a couple of weeks. State Route 207 (Kingsbury Grade) had two construction closures, one in May and the other since Labor Day. The through traffic closure was originally slated to end in mid to late October.
