LTCC women's soccer blanks Sierra College, off to CCCAA Final Four

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) women's soccer team is headed to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Tournament.

The Lady Coyotes beat Sierra College Monday afternoon by a score of 2-0 in the third round of the NorCal Regional Playoffs at Consumnes College in Sacramento. The game was originally scheduled on the LTCC field in South Lake Tahoe but snow moved it to the valley.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students dressed up for Spirit week and seniors on the volleyball and soccer teams played their last home games.

On Campus

To celebrate Halloween, the STHS Leadership and Yearbook groups created a Spirit week, where students dressed up in different themes, including angels versus devils, 80’s day, E-boy/girl versus VSCO girl, Halloween costumes, and blue-and-gold gear.

Points for dressing up increased this week compared to previous Spirit weeks, which helped drive up participation.

South Tahoe Babe Ruth all-stars beat South Reno to become Nevada State Champs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a close on Tuesday night as the South Tahoe Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-star team became the Nevada State champs after beating South Reno 12-11 in extra innings. They beat their opponents in the state tournament this past weekend 11-2 and 21-5.

The twelve teens from the South Shore are now headed to Utah for the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament July 22-27.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Play Ball! There is still a few feet on top of the baseball diamonds but its never too early to plan baseball tryouts.

Player evaluations/tryouts will be held in March and those playing have to choose one of the following dates. Arrive 30- 45 minutes prior to the listed start time to sign in and warm up:

South Tahoe High girls soccer team headed to state playoffs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High girls varsity soccer team took care of their opponents all season long and look for more of the same this weekend as they head to the 2018 NIAA 3A State Girls Soccer playoffs.

Sporting an overall 23-2 record and a league record of 17-1, the Vikings beat Truckee 2-1 Saturday in the 3A Northern Championship to take their #1 seed from the north down to Las Vegas.

History is made with two Lake Tahoe Grizzlies teams taking state titles

Two South Lake Tahoe hockey teams went to San Jose to compete in the 2017 California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) State Championships, and both came home with a division title.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee A and Bantam B hockey teams won their respective divisions during the tournament at Sharks Ice March 31 to April 2.

This is the first time in CAHA history where two teams from one hockey club took home the gold in the same year.

South Tahoe High wrestler is tops in state for second straight year

During all four years at South Tahoe High School, Andrew Herrera has made it to the Nevada State Wrestling Championships, and Saturday night he capped it off with his second consecutive first place finish.

Wresting at 195 lbs, Herrera beat Brennan Reese of Spring Creek for the second straight week. They met last week at the 3A Northern League Wrestling Championships with the same results as February 11, a win by the South Tahoe High senior.

Two South Tahoe High wrestlers take first at Northerns, headed to Nevada State Tournament

Truckee High School was the scene of this weekend's two-day 2017 NIAA 3A Northern League Wrestling Championships, with two South Tahoe High athletes moving onto the mats at the Nevada State Wrestling Championships at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks February 10-11.

South Tahoe High pair wins Nevada State Tennis 3A Title

The team of Louis Marin and Mickey Sullivan from South Tahoe High won the Nevada State 3A tennis doubles title Saturday, beating Preston Jorgensen and Boen Huxford from Boulder City, 6-1, 6-2

They began the state tournament on Friday with a match against Adan Cano and Kevin Giron from Desert Springs High. After beating them 6-3, 6-3 they went onto a 9:00 a.m. Saturday match against Zach Larson and Noah Warren from Truckee. Marin and Sullivan beat them 6-3, 6-3, setting them up for the championship game.

The state tennis tournament was held at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee.

Prep round-up for the South Shore: Whittell and South Tahoe Highs

The South Tahoe High boy's tennis team continues to dominate Northern Nevada action on the courts and are now preparing to take their 12-0 record to the Nevada state tournament which begins in two weeks. In the meantime, players head to the regional playoffs.

South Tahoe High's varsity football team is now in a three-way tie for second place in Northern Nevada 3A with their 6-1 record. They blanked Dayton during Friday's homecoming game at South Tahoe, 57-0.

Whittell Warriors crowned state champs after 53-48 win at Lawlor

For the second time in three years, the Whittell High School boys basketball team has won the Nevada state championship.

The win was the Warriors 25th consecutive win. They wrapped up their 2016 season with an overall record of 27-2.

On Saturday at Lawlor Event Center at the University of Nevada Reno, Whittell beat Word of Life Christian Academy out of Las Vegas, 53-48, earning them the NIAA Division IV crown.

South Tahoe and Whittell High basketball teams play in state tournament Friday

The basketball teams from both South Shore high schools are playing in the first round of the NIAA State Basketball Championship, with their first round games Friday.

Whittell Warriors are taking on the Adelson Lions in their Division IV game at 3:00 p.m. at Reed High School in Reno with the South Tahoe Vikings playing the Desert Pines Jaguars at 4:40 p.m. at Reno High. The Vikings play in NIAA Division I-A.

South Tahoe High's Andrew Herrera wins state wrestling championship

Andrew Herrera, a South Tahoe High junior, is the state wrestling champion after he beat all opponents at 195 pounds during the Nevada State Division I-A Wrestling Tournament Saturday night in Primm, Nev.

Herrera beat Dai`jon Payno of Mojave High. Third place when to Sheldon Wilkinson of Spring Creek ad fourth to Cameron Cox of Faith Lutheran.

STHS Senior Michael Valney made it to the final mat but lost a close match to Peter Enos of Faith Luthern. The 135-pound wrestler wrapped up his high school wrestling career as #2 in the state.

Whittell High's basketball team wins Northern Nevada Division IV title

Whittell High School is heading to the Nevada state championships next week as the #1 seed from the north after taking care of Mineral County, winning 60-44.

The Warriors trip to the Northern Nevada Division IV title began with a 14-0 regular season record. In round one of the tournament they beat Jackpot 69-36, followed by a semifinal Whittell victory over Pyramid Lake 60-49.

South Tahoe boys basketball team heads to state tournament as #2 seed from the north

It was a total of eight points that separated the winner from the loser in the three games South Tahoe High played in the Northern Nevada Division 1-A basketball tournament this week.

On Thursday, the Vikings beat Spring Creek 69-66 in the quarterfinals.

On Friday, the Vikings beat Lowry 44-41 in the semifinals.

In Saturday's final game, South Tahoe was matched against Elko. It was another nail biter as Junior Noah Jackson attempted a three-point shot just as time ran out. It hit the rim, but didn't drop in.

It was a nail biter Friday night in the North Valleys High gym in the South Tahoe High-Lowry High basketball game. The score went back and forth during the game, with South Tahoe having a one-point lead with just under a minute left to play. Senior Denzel Perez was fouled 4 seconds left, and nailed both free throws, taking the Vikings up by three.

STHS ended up with the win.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams head to playoffs Thursday

The boys varsity basketball teams from both high schools on the South Shore are playing in the Northern Nevada playoffs starting Thursday.

South Tahoe High boys, who are the number three seed in Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A, are headed to North Valleys High in Reno Thursday afternoon for their quarterfinal game against Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. The STHS Vikings are split on the season against the Spartans with one loss, and one win.

South Tahoe Girls Soccer Team moves onto State Tournament

They still have one more game to play in Elko, but the South Tahoe High Girls Soccer Team is assured a spot in the 2015 NIAA Division I-A State Girls Soccer
Championship next weekend.

Number 1 seed Truckee will meet with the number 2 seed Vikings on Saturday morning to determine the final bracket for State.

South Tahoe had a first round bye yesterday, then met Spring Creek for Friday's game. The Vikings won the game, 5-2.

The State Tournament will be held in South Lake Tahoe November 13-14 at South Tahoe High.

Road to State ends for South Tahoe Boys Soccer Team

It took double-overtime Friday afternoon for the Sparks Railroaders to beat the South Tahoe Vikings in the second round of the 2015 NIAA Division I-A Northern Region Boys Soccer Championship.

The Vikings won their first round game in Elko on Thursday, beating Lowry 6-2.

Whittell girls go for repeat of NIAA Division III Nevada State High School Championship

The Whittell Warriors girls soccer team won Friday's first round game against Incline, getting them just one step away from repeating as State Champs for Division III.

The girls beat Incline, the host of the tournament, by a score of 3-2.

North Tahoe beat their first round opponent, White Pine, 3-0, setting up the state tournament game between the Tahoe Basin's North and South. The game will be played Saturday, November 7 at 11 a.m. at Incline High School.

Cross Country

Cole Snyder, a Whittell High School junior, is heading to State after coming in fourth at Saturday's NIAA Northern Region Division III/IV Championships at Rancho San Rafael in Reno. His time of 18:35 put him into the top 5 which earns him a spot at the November

Freshman runners Sam Rusk and Jacob Otterstrom placed 43rd and 47th respectively. Rusk had a time of 26:00 and Otterstrom had 28:13.

The Nevada State Tournament for both boys and girls soccer teams will be held in South Lake Tahoe Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. Both of the teams from South Tahoe High are in position to play in the big game, but first they have to place in either first or second place in next weekend's NIAA 1A Northern Championships in Elko, Nev.

South Tahoe High wrestler wins at Fresno tournament

As Andrew Herrera is wrapping up his sophomore year at South Tahoe High, he is also busy making a mark in the wrestling world.

On Saturday, June 6, Herrera took first place in the 192-pound division at the California USA Wrestling tournament in Fresno.

The young South Lake Tahoe wrestler took third in the 170 pound division during February's state tournament.

Whittell's baseball team one step closer to repeat as state champs

The Whittell Warriors baseball team entered the state tournament as the defending championships, and today they are one step closer to repeating for Division IV teams.

They lost their first round game on Thursday against the number one seed from the south, Pahranagat Valley, 12-2. They then went on to beat Tonopah in the loser's bracket by a score of 7-6 on Friday which saw them meet up Pahranagat Valley once again.

Whittell won the game, 4-2.

In the meantime, Virginia City, the number one seed from the north, beat Tonopah 9-5 and Pahranagat Valley 6-1.

South Tahoe's post season ends in loss to Elko

The varsity boy's baseball team from South Tahoe High met up with their 2015 nemesis on the diamond this weekend, loosing to Elko 6-5 and 9-4. The losses ended the Viking's hope for a State Tournament bid.

Elko beat South Tahoe each of their previous three meetings this season.

South Tahoe won their game against Spring Creek on Friday.

Whittell Warriors earn Nevada state baseball tournament spot

Whittell High School's varsity baseball team will be defending their 2014 Nevada State Title this week as they head to the 2015 NIAA Division IV Tournament in Las Vegas.

The Warriors went 2-1 this weekend's Northern Nevada playoffs, getting wins over Wells and Mineral County.

The boys from the South Shore will enter the State Tournament as the number two seed from the north. Virginia City is number one.

The South Tahoe High varsity baseball team took their 16-8 league record into the NIAA 1-A Northern League Baseball Tournament Friday, coming out of the first day of games still in the hunt for a state tournament bid.

If the Vikings get by Elko Saturday morning, they'll meet up with the number one seed Churchill County in the NIAA-IA Championship game.

Whittell falls short of another Nevada State basketball title

The Whittell High School's boys varsity basketball team made another trip to the NIAA Division IV State Basketball Championships over the weekend, trying to replicate last year's championship. They took their 15-1 league record to The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the final games of the season.

On Friday, the boys played Spring Mountain from the southern division. Despite 26 points from junior Palmer Chaplin and 17 by Quinn Kixmiller, the Whittell Warriors lost to Spring Mountain, 69-54.

Whittell wins again; Headed to State Basketball Tournament

Two teams that have been neck and neck in the NIAA Northern Division IV standings all season are both headed to the Nevada State tournament.

Whittell Warriors who have just one loss in the regular season, to Virginia City, will meet their nemisis on Saturday for the Northern Nevada Region title. The Virginia City uckers, who's only loss in the regular season was to Whittell, aims to dethrone the defending state champion Warriors.

The two teams meet at 1:30 p.m. in Spring Creek, NV where the Northern Region tournament has been held since Thursday.

Whittell boys beat Owyhee 71-27 in NIAA Div IV basketball quarterfinals

Defending Nevada State Division IV basketball champs Whittell High School are the top seed for the West in the Northern Region tournment which started Thursday at Spring Creek High School.

The Warriors beat Owyhee High School in the first round, 71-27. They will meet the McDermitt Bulldogs in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. McDermitt is the #2 seed for the East in post season regional action.

In the other quarterfinal game, Eureka will play Virginia City at 8 p.m.

South Tahoe's Herrera wins third place at state tournament

South Tahoe High School sophomore Andrew Herrera brought home third place honors from the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) state wrestling tournament this weekend.

Herrera, who wrestled at 170 lbs, beat Spring Creek's Masin Goodell during Saturday's final round to be the only wrestler from South Lake Tahoe to place.

Pahrump Valley won first place in the team category, followed by Lowry, Virgin Valley and Spring Creek. South Tahoe placed 15 in the state's team category.

One week after the Whittell High girls brought home the state soccer trophy for division III schools, the girls from South Tahoe High are headed to the state tournament for division 1-A. They are entering the tournament as the number two seed from the North after losing to Truckee in the Regional Playoffs.

South Tahoe High Baseball Team Makes Best of First Trip to State Tournament

For the first time in school history, the South Tahoe High Vikings made it to the Nevada Baseball State Division 1-A Tournament.

The Vikings lost their opening game on Thursday to #1 seed in the tournament, Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas, by a score of 17-6. They bounced back for game 2 on Friday morning. They beat Chaparall High School of Las Vegas, 13-8.

South Tahoe High Varsity Baseball Team Headed to State Tournament

The South Tahoe Vikings varsity baseball team is headed to the Nevada State Division 1-A Tournament May 22-24 after taking 2nd place in the Northern Championships Saturday.

Friday's Northern Nevada Tournament action saw South Tahoe beat Number 1 seed Elko in the morning game, followed by Fallon beating Spring Creek in the afternoon and South Tahoe losing to the Fallon team in the nightcap.

South Tahoe had the morning game again on Saturday, in which they beat Spring Creek by a score of 10-8.

November 16, 2013: This just in: The South Tahoe High School girl's soccer team has won the Nevada State 1-A Championship! In Friday's first round action the Lady Vikings beat Faith Luthern by a score of 2-1 which brought them to today's championship round against Pahrump Valley. South Tahoe was victorious by a score of 3-2 and is crowned state champ.

High School Soccer Round-up for the South Shore

This was a full weekend for high school soccer on the south shore. The Whittell Warriors and South Tahoe Vikings boys and girls soccer teams all made a showing at regional soccer championships, resulting in one team headed to state.

Tahoe Grizzlies Receive Certificate of Recognition from Mayor

The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Associations Tahoe Grizzlies Bantam Ice Hockey Team received a Certificate of Recognition for winning the State Hockey Championship from the City of South Lake Tahoe’s Mayor Tom Davis at Tuesday's city council meeting.

The Tahoe Grizzlies bantam hockey team is comprised of youth ages 13-15 from the South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association were the underdogs in the state tournament. They managed to win the California State title April 14 at Sharks Ice in San Jose. It is the first state title ever won by a team from Lake Tahoe.
