Stateline, Nevada – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is accepting project nominations for its annual Best in Basin awards program now through Tuesday, April 2.

TRPA created the Best in Basin awards program as a way to recognize public and private projects that demonstrate exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.

Tahoe meeting to reveal results from analysis on newly formed Carson Valley Water Utility

South Lake Tahoe City Council on a delayed start Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to the current blizzard, the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 5 will start two hours late at 11:00 a.m. The closed session portion of the meeting will start at 10:30 a.m.

City officials said this delayed start will allow attendees to get to the meeting safely.

There are 15 items on the agenda including the final vote on a cannabis use ordinance and first reading on a mobile vending ordinance.

Sierra snowpack at healthy 98% of average, easing concerns of water shortage this summer

PHILLIPS, Calif. - Under blue skies Thursday, January 31,the monthly snowpack measurement was conducted in Phillips, southwest of Lake Tahoe at the base of Sierra-at-Tahoe, and its good news.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) snow survey team measured 50 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 18 inches, almost double from a month ago.

Public meeting to discuss possible rate changes for South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A rate increase for the next five years is being considered by the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) to fund the replacement, repair or upgrades to the local water and sewer system.

With much of the system building in the 1950s and 1960s, there are problems that need to be addressed to ensure reliable delivery of high-quality drinking water and provide adequate fire flow for our community.

Snowpack measures above normal for Sierra and Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While the snowpack isn't epic in measurement (yet), it rose above normal with this past two week's storms that brought five feet of snow to the upper elevations.

During the January 3, 2019 monthly measurement of the snow and its water content at Phillips near Sierra-at-Tahoe, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) found the snow to be at 80 percent of normal. The prior year at the same time was a dismal three percent of normal.

Kili Ongoy named STAR Rookie of the Year

Chase International’s Kili Ongoy was named Rookie of the Year by the South Tahoe Association of Realtors earlier this month. Ongoy has been with Chase since August of 2017. She serves on the association’s planning commission and was inducted as vice president.

Victims in Topaz Lake and ATV incidents identified

UDPATE 1/13/19 - The second drowning victim has been recovered from Topaz Lake. The recovery efforts resumed today on at 9:00 a.m. by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Marine 7 and search and rescue units, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Specialized Vehicle Unit (SUV) and their HASTY Dive Team, and Wardens from the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. Marine 7’s ROV located the body of Jesse Gregory, 50, at a depth of 22 feet.

The surviving fisherman, Scott Wise, has recovered and was released from the hospital.

Boat capsizes in Topaz Lake; One dead, one missing

UPDATE 1/13/19 12:30 p.m. - Douglas County Sheriff's Office has released the names of those involved in the boating accident. One boater, Scott Wise, was able to get to shore while a search began for the other two occupants. Rescue teams located the body of Burt Pederson of Sparks, Nevada, a man in his 40s according to DCSO. Jesse Gregory, also of Sparks, is still missing and presumed to have drowned.

Wise was treated at the Carson Valley Medical Center for treatment. He has since been released.

Tom Stone selected as new Douglas County manager

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - It has been announced by the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners that Tom Stone is the new county manager.

Stone, who beat out 42 potential candidates for the position, has lived in Douglas County since 2011.

“I’m looking forward to working with all five commissioners and the great staff at Douglas County”, said Stone. “Seldom in a person's lifetime do they have the opportunity to serve two exceptional counties in two great States. I am truly honored.”

After 28 years, Richard Solbrig retires as head of South Tahoe Public Utility District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For many, Richard Solbrig has been the only person they knew as the general manager of South Lake Public Utility District.

On Wednesday, Janury 9, 2019, Sobrig retired.

The district's board of directors unanimously approved a resolution during their January 3 meeting, honoring Solbrig for he service that began in 1990. He has been their general manager since 2003.

SnowGlobe gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SnowGlobe’s 2018 is over but their donations to the local community will continue for months, years and decades to come.

SnowGlobe donated fresh food, water, personal items and clothing to 11 local charities, including Live Violence Free, The Warm Room (Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless), South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center, the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, Christmas Cheer, Tahoe Youth & Family Services, St. Theresa’s Church and their Bread & Broth program, Focus, Case de Fida, and the Reno/Sparks Gospel Mission.

Sierra snowpack at 80% of average

PHILLIPS, Calif. - It was a much different picture of the Sierra snowpack today than what there was a year ago when the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted their first monthly measurement of the snow and water content at Phillips Station, ten miles west of Lake Tahoe.

As of January 3, 2019, DWR measured the snow at 25.5 inches deep, which means the Sierra snowpack is 80 percent of normal with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of nine inches. These figures are 36 percent of the April 1 average, the date used as the maximum snowpack that will be received in the mountains.

Public memorial for Judge Terrence Finney in South Lake Tahoe Friday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A public memorial for the first superior court judge in the community, the Honorable Terrence M. Finney, will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Department 3 of the South Lake Tahoe courthouse.

Finney passed away on November 7, 2018 at the age of 84.

South Lake Tahoe prepares for SnowGlobe - Important road closure and noise information

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Thousands of music fans and dozens of performers are headed to South Lake Tahoe for the 8th annual SnowGlobe Music Festival from December 29-31. Before they get here, hundreds of workers are spending many hours preparing the scene from the delivery and installation of stages, tents, electrical cables, ski jumps, trailers, vehicles and port-a-potties.

Tahoe Douglas Fire boat named one of '10 Significant Boats of 2018'

The boat Lisa "Angel of Tahoe" Maloff and Bob and Nackey Scagliotti helped bring to the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) in 2017 was named one of WorkBoat magazine’s “10 Significant Boats of 2018” an international in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Lake Assault Boats fire and rescue craft on duty with TDFPD, named Marine 24, was christened in 2017. At a cost of $500,000 it is designed to respond to a wide range of emergencies, including structural and wildland fires, and on-the-water rescue operations.

STPUD board meeting to highligh 2018 water and sewer improvements

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2014, the South Tahoe Public Utility District’s Board of Directors approved a series of annual rate increases to fund more than $50 million in critical improvements to South Tahoe’s water, wastewater, and recycled water systems. These upgrades lower long-term costs, improve fire flow, protect the environment and ensure longterm, quality service. On Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 6 p.m. the District will host a public meeting on the upgrades to the water, sewer and recycled water systems, and the ongoing improvements still needed.

South Lake Tahoe breweries band together to make beer for Butte County fire victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What do Cold Water Brewery, Outpost Brewing Co., Sidellis Lake Tahoe and South Lake Brewing Company all have in common besides making great beer?

They are all community minded and collaborated on Friday, December 14 to create a Tahoe batch of Resilience IPA. All proceeds from the ale will go to the Camp Fire fund.

In January the beer will be available at any of the four establishments in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe apartments found to be unsafe - tenants must vacate

Both Bijou and Magnet schools set to reopen after gas and water issues

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If unusual issues come in threes, then its now safe for schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

Following on the heels of the November 11 fire at Sierra House Elementary, two more schools in LTUSD had issues this week that caused the schools to close.

Caltrans thanks South Lake Tahoe businesses and drivers for patience during highway project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Phase II of the three-year, $57,000,000 Highway 50 project from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge in South lake Tahoe is complete and Caltrans will back in the Spring of 2019 to work on the final phase.

The project is a water quality project that has also addressed ADA compliance on curbs, widened bike paths to six feet, added bus pullouts, replaced curbs, gutters and sidewalks, added new pavement, added one stop light, and will have replaced two others and added left turn lane improvements at Sierra Boulevard when it wraps up next year.

Parents question safety at Sierra House Elementary after school reopens soon after fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire that destroyed a hallway, reading room and teacher's room on Sunday, November 11 was just seconds away from engulfing all of Sierra House Elementary. Had it not been for the quick response by Lake Valley Fire Protection District the discussion would be about replacing the 44-year-old South Lake Tahoe school rather than the processes involved to get it cleaned up and opened in just two days.

Carson City sheriff's investigators make multiple robbery, kidnapping arrests

Carson City Sheriff’s Office detectives and the Special Enforcement Team have arrested several people related to an ongoing investigation that involved alleged kidnapping and robbery.

Patrol deputies responded to a report of a battery with a deadly weapon call on Sunday, Nov. 25 at around 2:00 a.m. near the water tower area of Goni Road, said CCSO Capt. Brian Humphrey.

More pet supplies being collected in South Lake Tahoe for Camp Fire victims

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as people are responding to those left homeless in the devastating Camp Fire in the town of Paradise, concerned citizens are also taking care of pets with those who were evacuated as well as those who have yet to be reunited with their owners.

Several trips have already been made by South Lake Tahoe locals to the camps in areas near Paradise both for humans and pets.

US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project approved by TRPA

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - It's been 38 years in the making. On Thursday, November 15, 2018, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Board of Directors unanimously approved the final joint environmental document for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the "Loop Road."

Last week, the board of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) unanimously approved the same document, the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS/EIS).

For the 2018 Christmas season Maiella and Milan Riva, Lily Demus and Simone Sitchon will be collecting items and money to help both Lake Tahoe Humane Society and El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Last year the four girls collected clothing and toys for local foster youth and in 2016 they collected gloves, hats, socks, coats, and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room.
