The job of Douglas County Manager has been vacant since the departure of Steve Mokrohisky in April. He took the job of County Administrator in Lane County, Oregon.

His replacement has been narrowed down to seven candidates and the public has the chance to meet all of them during a reception on Monday, August 4 at the Carson Valley Inn Ballroom from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The South Lake Tahoe garden of John and Cathy Hindmarsh will be on display Saturday, July 26.

The showing of the garden is hosted by Aspen Hollow Nursery at the Hindmarsh home located at 642 Tehama Drive. Stop by between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.. Refreshments will be provided and donations to Christmas Cheer are welcome. The event is free and open to the public.

This July featured garden is the first installment of the "South of
South Shore" 2014 open garden tour. The garden was designed and constructed by John Fellows of Aspen Hollow.

Thinning of trees for fuels reduction and forest health will continue next week on approximately 170 acres of National Forest System lands on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Beginning Monday, July 28, 2014, thinning will take place off of North Upper Truckee Road near West San Bernardino Avenue, Pioneer Trail northwest of forest road 12N08 (Powerline), Pioneer Trail southwest of Columbine Trail and on some urban lots in the Tahoe Island Drive area near 15th Street. Thinning operations in these locations may vary over the next several weeks.

Helen Welch, operator of the "Little Psychic Shop" in Minden, was arrested Wednesday by Douglas County Sheriff's officers on the felony charge of attempting to obtain money under false pretenses.

An undercover investigation by the DCSO was initiated after they received complaints of fraud by Welch's customers. The business is located at 1578 Hwy 395.

Anyone who believes they may have been the victim of fraudulent activity involving Helen Welch is encouraged to call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at 775-782-9905 to make a report.

Valhalla and LTCC are teaming up to present the 2008 Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play August: Osage County at LTCC’s Duke Theater starting Thursday, July 24th.

7/23/14 update: After a manhunt lasting several hours, Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies located Anthony Robert Diaz on July 22, 2014 at approximately 11 p.m. walking near Pine Nut Road in Gardnerville. Diaz’ 12 year old son was with him, and was safely recovered and returned to his mother. Diaz was arrested for ex-felon possession of a firearm, and child endangerment. Diaz remains in custody in the Douglas County Jail in Minden, and his bail has been set at $50k.

The Wa-Sha-Shu It’Deh Native American Festival returns to Valhalla at the Tallac Historic site this weekend, July 26 and 27. The festival celebrates the Washoe's ancient lifeways and their Lake Tahoe homeland.

The festival features traditional American Indian dancers and drum performers, basket weaving displays, art, and great food. The basket weaving competition features over fourteen different categories. The Washoe are highly regarded for their master craftsmanship of baskets and have had several well-known weavers throughout their history, including Dat So La Lee.

There is now a permanent drug-disposal bin located in the lobby of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department thanks to the collaboration between the Department and the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition. This bin is in a secure location for anyone in the community to properly dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

If you own a home or business in the City of South Lake Tahoe you will soon be able to install renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water conservation improvements and pay for it with a voluntary lien against your property.

Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) is a volunteer program which will give property owners a chance to improve their properties. Figtree Financing and the California Enterprise Development Authority (CEDA) will facilitate the program in the city.

1. Lake Tahoe. Known for its crystal clear blue water and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the lake, which borders Nevada and California, is a nature lover's paradise. For Nancie Goodnough, who cannot walk and hike due to rheumatoid arthritis, Lake Tahoe has been a place of healing.

As they were preparing to power up the hotel and casino during Sunday's power outage, MontBleu's generator had a malfunction, sending smoke billowing out of the resort.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Department responded. "We responded to a generator malfunction," said Eric Guevin, Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall. "The generator unit was producing a substantial amount of smoke and we had to shut it down."

MontBleu got another generator up and running and emergency power was sent to the casino and hotel.

South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic brings ‘Freedom of the Forties’ to the Tahoe Keys Marina this year on July 25 and 26.

This year's theme is ‘Freedom of the Forties’ which honors U.S. military and pays homage to antique and classic boats of the forties. World War II veterans are provided free admission to the event, and U.S. military receive discounts on event admission.

Carnival rides, food, craft booths, jam making contest, pie eating contest and garden creations are just some of the family friendly treats in store for the 2nd Annual Kiwanis Community Fair in South Lake Tahoe over Labor Day Weekend.

From August 29 through September 1, 2014, the Lake Tahoe Community College will be the scene of all the action.

Festival goers will have their say this Labor Day weekend as Sample the Sierra adds a competitive edge to the food and wine festival with the introduction of a new award – Best Tasting Experience! Attendees will vote for the booth that has their favorite flavorful creation that includes fresh ingredients that are prepared by a local chef or restaurant and then paired with regional wine, beer or spirits. The booth with the most votes will be awarded the Best Tasting Experience of 2014.

It has been shown that people who suffer from the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) find relief in yoga due to it's emphasis on relaxation, breathing and deliberate movements.

Yoga classes to assist in relief from the symptoms of MS are now available for free in South Lake Tahoe at the Pilates Studio Lake Tahoe.

In a matter of moments, Madden Casto of South Lake Tahoe found herself in possession of two autographed golf balls and a $20 bill.

The third grade student at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School, decked out in a tutu and flowers in her hair, was picked out of the crowd by comedian Ray Romano at the 17th hole at Edgewood Tahoe. He said he'd give someone $20 if he made it onto the green with his tee shot and Madden became that "someone."

Lake Tahoe Community College has selected Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Chief Ben Sharit as its Distinguished Alumni Award winner for 2014.

The end of the 25th American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe wasn't seen by the thousands of spectators that normally line the 18th hole in the final round.

Lightning caused the tournament to be placed on delay for a couple of hours, and by the time play resumed thousands of people had headed back to their cars, hotels and homes.

In true Celebrity Golf fashion, the end was an exciting one. At the time of the delay there was a tie between Mark Rypien and Jeremy Roenick, with Annika Sorenstam in third with just a few holes left to play.

The crowds were out in force for round two of the 25th Annual American Century Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe Saturday. The beach on 17 was packed as usual with boaters and sunbathers waiting for their chance to play games of toss and catch with the dozens of celebrities that always join in the fun.

8:20 PM UPDATE:According to Liberty Energy, they are slowly getting power back on, starting up the grid with Glenbrook. It may take a few more hours to get the whole South Shore back up and running.

South Lake Tahoe is without power this afternoon due to a problem with NV Energy losing electricity. The region lost connection to both transformers coming out of Nevada.

Minden and Alpine County are also without power.

The energy company is working on the problem but repair time is unknown.
