Kiwanis of Lake Tahoe holding Sock Drive in November and December - several drop off locations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe is holding a new Sock Drive through the end of the year in South Lake Tahoe.

Newsom appoints Superior Court judges for El Dorado County and other jurisdictions

Governor Gavin Newsom appointed a new judge to the El Dorado County Superior Court Wednesday along with an Associate Justice and ten other Superior Court judges. El Dorado County had an opening on the bench and will have another opening in January with the retirement of Judge Suzanne Kingsbury.

Driver involved in deadly Carson City crash jailed on multiple charges

CARSON CITY, Nev. - The 24-year-old driver involved in a deadly multi-vehicle crash Tuesday at the bottom of Spooner Summit on US50 has been booked on multiple charges, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP).

General manager selected for new Tahoe South Events Center

STATELINE, Nev. — Spectra has named Kevin Boryczki as the first general manager for the new Tahoe South Events Center. He brings almost two decades of experience in venue, event, and sports management to his new role.

Spectra is the private management and hospitality company selected by the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority in March to manage the new center.

First full day of court for suspect in South Lake Tahoe murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Trial proceedings began after a jury was seated on November 4, but Tuesday was the first full day of court in the trial of Tavarez Lopez, one of the suspects in a murder at the Beverly Lodge in South Lake Tahoe on January 30, 2016.

Prescribed fires scheduled around Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state, and federal partners, begins prescribed fire operations around Lake Tahoe and will continue through much of the winter season, weather and conditions permitting. Prescribed fires help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

LTUSD joins all El Dorado County school districts in telling Newsom mandates are challenging

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Even before Governor Gavin Newsom told people in the state there would be a mandate that all students in grades K-12 would be required to have a COVID-19 vaccination, school districts were under attack for mandates from the State they were enforcing.

Barton Foundation awards $100,000 to 12 South Lake Tahoe non-profits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Foundation’s Community Health Grants program recently awarded $100,000 in funding to 12 local non-profit organizations engaged in healthcare-related initiatives in South Lake Tahoe.

The non-profit organizations were chosen for their work in addressing the areas most pressing healthcare needs—Mental Health, Substance Use, and Access to Healthcare—as identified by the Community Health Needs Assessment. Since 2008, the Barton Foundation has provided over $600,000 in funding to local agencies that support community members facing these challenges.

The 7th Tahoe Film Fest will take place December 2-5, with films being screened at Incline Village Cinema, Northstar Village Cinema, and the Crystal Bay Casino Crown Room.

Tahoe Conservancy to expand work to restore forest resilience and reduce wildfire risk

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - New forestry guidelines were adopted by the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) Monday that will help increase the pace and scale of their work to reduce wildfire risk to Tahoe communities and improve forest resilience.

The CTC board authorized a program budget of up to $50 million for the Conservancy to begin implementing work under the new guidelines.

Christmas tree permits go on sale November 17 for Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Christmas tree permits will be available in the Lake Tahoe Basin starting November 17, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. Forest officials were evaluating the availability of trees after the Caldor Fire but determined enough areas around the lake had trees. Some of the normal cutting areas may not be available but maps will be provided at the time of purchase.

This permit allows you to cut a Christmas Tree within designated areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

New Year's celebrations at Heavenly Village to feature Tyler Rich and the Gin Blossoms

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Holidays will kick off with a tree lighting on November 26, and culminate with a special two-day long New Year's celebration that will feature shows by the Gin Blossoms and Tyler Rich.

On Thursday, December 30, country singer Tyler Rich will take the stage, followed by the rock band, Gin Blossoms, on New Year's Eve.

The shows, produced by Dreu Murin Productions LLC., will also have guest acts and fireworks on New Year's Eve at 9:00 p.m.

Bread & Broth seeks donations for holiday meal giveaways

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Bread & Broth is once again doing something different for Thanksgiving and Christmas this year and is seeking donations from the community to make it happen.

Traditionally, Bread & Broth has sponsored a hot, nutritious meal for about 250 people over the Thanksgiving holiday. Last year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Bread & Broth provided a “Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway” and gave bags of food instead of the hot meal.

This practice will continue this year as well.

South Tahoe High Lady Vikings now Northern Nevada 3A champs

The South Tahoe High School girls soccer team was victorious in Winnemucca Saturday, beating their long-time rival Truckee 2-0 in the Northern Nevada 3A tournament. The win gives the Vikings a trip to Pahrump, Nevada on November 12 for the state tournament. The state championship game is Saturday the 13th.

During the tournament South Tahoe beat Churchill County 3-1 on Thursday, Spring Creek 1-0 Friday, then the win against Truckee on Saturday.

First season of NDOT SR 431-28 Tahoe Project completed

The Nevada Department of Transportation and Q&D Construction completed the first season of a multi-year project to enhance the existing roadway and utility system along sections of State Route 431 and State Route 28 to help preserve pavement and protect Lake Tahoe.

This season, crews installed 57,000 linear feet of Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) underground conduit line along SR-431 from Mt. Rose Summit to the SR-28 intersection; east of the SR-28 roundabout toward Crystal Bay; and west of the SR-28 roundabout to the Northwood/Southwood Boulevard intersection in Incline Village.

Applications now being accepted for City of South Lake Tahoe boards and commissions

The South Lake Tahoe City Council is looking for local residents to fill spots on City commissions and boards. Applications are being accepted for the following:

Planning Commission
The City Council will be appointing two members to serve two-year terms on the Planning Commission. Applicants must reside within the city limits. The Planning Commission meets monthly assuming there is business to conduct.

Right-turn restrictions in Meyers will not happen this winter, possible continuation of pilot next summer

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - In an effort to keep traffic on US50 and not in the neighborhoods in Meyers, a right-turn restriction pilot program was implemented this past summer.

With many weekend visitors leaving South Lake Tahoe during the same four-hour window, there is extra congestion on US50 in Meyers during this time. Combine this with heavy snowfall and highway closures, internet, and wayfinding apps finding more expeditious routes, people don't want to stay in line and leave in search of a quicker route.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue to add Fire Prevention Bureau, new deputy chief/fire marshal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After years of trying to do more with less, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) is making the moves necessary to better protect the community.

First on tap for the new plan is the hiring of a new Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal. City Council approved the new position on Tuesday.

"I think the fire marshal position is extremely important," said SLTFR Chief Clive Savacool. This person will take on the duties of a fire inspector, fire marshal and will come with the rank of deputy chief, so will do much more.

Letter: McClintock introduces Illegal Immigrant Payoff Prohibition Act of 2021

Today I introduced the Illegal Immigrant Payoff Prohibition Act of 2021. House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan are principal co-sponsors.

The legislation will prevent the Attorney General from making settlement payments to individuals and families who entered the United States illegally. It is a direct response to reports that the Biden Administration is proposing to pay as much as $450,000 per person to compensate families that unlawfully entered the United States.

Barton Health: CDC recommends Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending children 5- to 11-years be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. This recommendation follows approval from the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization (EUA) in this age group, now expanding vaccine recommendations to about 28 million children in the United States.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After the Barton Foundation decided to not have its annual Festival of Tree and Lights in 2021, South Tahoe High School stepped in and will host its first Winter Festival on December 3 and 4. The event will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. each night.

The Winter Festival will be completely run by students and will feature many of the favorite Barton events around the school, student union, screening room, sports medicine therapy room, theater, and food trucks will be in front of the school in the Circle.

Lake Wind Advisory Thursday starts off series of small storm systems at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for Lake Tahoe Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Expect winds from the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Waves on the lake will be 2-4 feet.

The advisory is ahead of a fast-moving weather system that will move across northeast California and northwest Nevada late tonight into Thursday, bringing a period of gusty winds. Following this system are several other quick-hitters according to the National Weather Service in Reno:

CHP receives grants to combat DUIs and distracted drivers

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has received two beneficial grants that will allow them to put more officers on the road to combat impaired and distracted drivers.

Funding for these programs is provided by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested on multiple charges after hours-long standoff

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 30-year-old South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on multiple charges after an hours-long standoff at a Fairway Avenue home.

Man seriously burned in South Lake Tahoe RV fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire in an RV Wednesday morning sent its occupant to the hospital with severe injuries.

At 6:17 a.m. on November 3, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called to the 800 block of Eloise Avenue where they found a recreational vehicle (RV) parked on an empty lot with moderate smoke coming from it. There were no visible flames at the time but a person was inside.

The sole occupant, an unidentified man in his early 60s, was flown to Reno with critical injuries and severe burns according to SLTFR Chief Clive Savacool.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe to benefit from Sunday fundraisers at Flatstick Pub

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dogs and cats in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee will be benefitting all month long at Flatstick Pub, the area's first indoor mini-golf course.

Drink and Putt for a Cause will be held each Sunday in November to raise funds for the Humane Society and Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT). The pub will donate $1 from every beer and $1 from every golf game sold in their monthly event, Sunday FundRaise.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its speaker series on Eastern Sierra history on Saturday, November 6 with a living history/Chautauqua style presentation by local history David Woodruff. He will perform as Sierra Nevada legend Snowshoe Thompson.

Weather permitting, the talk will take place at the campfire ring at Wylder. Otherwise, it moves into the heated tent on the front deck.

There is no Sunday talk this week but There are plans to continue on weekends through Christmas and New Years. Once dates are set they will be on the South Tahoe Now calendar.

The talks are free.
