COVID-19 cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 74 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday in El Dorado County.

Pollock Pines, Camino, Kyburz - 867 cases - +6 - The 14-day new case rate is 28 with 206 per 100,000 residents.
El Dorado Hills - 3355 cases - +18 - The 14-day new case rate is 71 with 167 per 100,000 residents.
Diamond Springs, El Dorado - 772 cases - +5 - The 14-day new case rate is 28 with 298 per 100,000 residents.
North County - 867 cases - +6 - The 14-day new case rate is 25 with 173 per 100,000 residents.

Wet and snowy start to the week in Lake Tahoe, but sunny and warmer starting Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Has it been wet and snowy enough for you yet? One more day of precipitation in the form of water and snow, then the system moves to the east.

Schools and roads closed around Lake Tahoe, power outage to almost 3,000 in South Lake Tahoe

There is a tree down on Glenwood -use an alternate route.

With power resuming in South Lake Tahoe, Barton Health services are scheduled to be fully operational. Patients who are unable to make their appointments should call their office directly to reschedule.

If power does affect operations in the outpatient clinics, patients will be called directly to reschedule appointments.

Barton Memorial Hospital runs on back up generators during power outages to ensure no disruption in medical services.

The Friends of the Library (FOL) Used Book Sale will be held on Saturday, October 30, in the Community Room of the library from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Boulders come down on US50 over Echo Summit, One lane of traffic for a few hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rain over Echo Summit caused rocks to fall onto the roadway Sunday, with crews staying in the area for hours to clear debris if needed. While the rocks this morning were easily removed, large boulders fell onto the road Sunday night and they will have to be blasted.

As of 10;00 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans said to expect delays for up to four hours.

Caldor Post-Fire BAER Assessment report released

The USDA Forest Service has released a summary of its post-fire assessment for emergency stabilization measures and actions on National Forest System (NFS) lands burned by the Caldor Fire on the Eldorado National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

The emergency treatments and activities are designed to decrease possible impacts to critical values from the burned area such as life and safety, property, critical natural resources, and cultural resources.

El Dorado County Food Bank brings free mobile farmer's market to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Food Bank of El Dorado County and California Emergency FoodLink have partnered with Bread & Broth for the next free drive-thru food distribution on Wednesday, October 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

They will be distributing fresh produce and non-perishable food items in the parking lot of St. Theresa Church at 1041 Lyons Avenue, South Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Fund supports another season of SOS Outreach

The Tahoe Fund has announced it will continue to support SOS Outreach with a grant that will expand the outdoor youth program’s impact in Lake Tahoe. The nonprofit provides opportunities for underserved youth to experience the outdoors while participating in a mentorship program that is designed to prepare them for life’s challenges.

The impactful program has served more than 585 kids as they learn to ski and snowboard, learn leadership skills, and learn the importance of protecting the environment through service projects each year.

PG&E customers in El Dorado County to have choice on electric company

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Tahoma all have Liberty Utilities as their power company, but residents in all portions of El Dorado County that are served by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) will soon have a choice.

Fire restrictions lifted in South Lake Tahoe, Eldorado National Forest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the arrival of a major dose of precipitation and 100 percent containment of the Caldor Fire, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue has lifted the burn ban that had been in place for most of the summer.

In the city limits, this means:
Charcoal and pellet BBQs are allowed
Propane/Gas BBQs are allowed
Wood fires are allowed at Campground by the Lake

Open wood fires are never allowed in the city at any time except at the Campground by the Lake. This includes outside fire pits.

On Red Flag Days, no outdoor cooking of any kind is ever allowed.

Opening on El Dorado County Community Action Council

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Community Action Council currently has a member vacancy within the Community Sector Membership category. The Community Action Council is seeking to fill the vacancy with an individual or agency to represent the interests and concerns of people and families with low incomes living in El Dorado County, with a special focus on housing, nutrition, and low-income program needs. Priority will be given to representatives of community organizations that demonstrate a commitment to advancing the purposes and activities of the Council.

Five locals appointed to newly created Arts, Culture and Tourism Commission

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During its meeting Tuesday, the South Lake Tahoe City Council appointed the first five voting members of the new Art, Culture and Tourism Commission.

The commission was established via resolution on August 20. Interested members of the community were asked to apply and seven applications were received. The City sought to have applications from youth and for a spot for a non-voting member from the South Lake Tahoe Tourism Improvement District or Lake Tahoe Lodging Association. None were received from these segments.

TERC offering Lake Tahoe residents free sugar pine seedlings

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is offering free sugar pine seedlings to Tahoe residents October 29-31 as part of a restoration project funded by the Tahoe Fund and the California Tahoe Conservancy. The goal of the project is to establish a new generation of genetically diverse sugar pines that can withstand the threats of climate change, including drought and bark beetle outbreaks. By restoring native sugar pines to the area and increasing their genetic diversity, the overall forest will benefit.

POBOB Outlaw Motorcycle Gang member arrested in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) arrested a known motorcycle gang member on Friday, October 22, 2021.

Jay Prater, a Douglas County resident, was arrested on a federal indictment on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

Forest Service warns of debris flows, flooding and rockfall within Caldor Fire area

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Eldorado National Forest are both urging extreme caution during the upcoming storm event that will affect Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.

There is potential with the atmospheric river hitting the Sierra starting Sunday for record and near-record precipitation for 2-day totals in the month of October. South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe City could see five inches of liquid in two days. For Tahoe City, that would be the second-highest amount following the 5.72" that fell in 1909.

Sandbag locations in South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Douglas County

Wet is the word for the weekend, and it could be very wet. A weak system will be brushing the area tomorrow, followed by a strong atmospheric river late Saturday night through Monday. This has the potential for strong winds, copious amounts of rainfall, and heavy upper elevation mountain snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said avoiding travel in the mountains during this time would be a good idea.

El Dorado County, Douglas County and the City of South Lake Tahoe are all urging residents to be prepared, especially in areas near the Caldor and Tamarack burn scars.

In order to add "988" as a national suicide hotline, all areas in the country that had a prefix of 988 will have to change to a 10-digit requirement on all local calls starting Sunday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a LOT of moisture heading to Lake Tahoe, just what form the precipitation will take as it arrives isn't clear. Heavy rainfall from an atmospheric river will move into the region Saturday night and may continue into Monday morning. High snow levels will lower to near 6000 feet sometime Monday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Wilbur Martinez-Guzman pleads guilty to Northern Nevada murders

Over a two week period in January 2019, four people were murdered in Northern Nevada, two in Washoe County and two in Douglas County. Communities and grieving families were stunned by the murders of Constance Koontz, 56, Sophia Renken, 74, Gerald David, 81, and Sharon David, 80.

Caltrans now offers volunteers up to $250 for highway litter removal

Caltrans has announced a new Clean California pilot program that offers Adopt-a-Highway volunteers up to $250 for picking up highway litter. The Adopt-A-Highway program has been one of the longest-standing and successful government-public partnerships in the state. Since its inception in 1989, more than 120,000 Californians have cleaned and enhanced over 15,000 shoulder-miles of roadside. The new pilot program will augment the overall goals of the Clean California program by providing additional resources to maintain and beautify the state's roadways.

El Dorado Smile Van to visit South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado Smiles Dental Van will be at two South Lake Tahoe schools in the month of November. They will provide a comprehensive exam to children in collaboration with Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

The exam will include x-rays, cleaning, fluoride sealants and complete oral exams.

Most insurances are accepted including Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal. A sliding fee is available for those that qualify. After receiving a health history and consent form, a dental representative will contact the family to schedule an appointment while the van is in town.

Caldor Fire now 100% contained

After burning for more than 60 days, the Caldor Fire, which threatened the south shore area of Lake Tahoe before firefighters successfully pushed it out of a destructive path, has reached 100 percent containment, the U.S. Forest Service said Thursday.

City Council approves several items concerning housing in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council approved a few items during its meeting on Tuesday that have to do with addressing the current housing situation in South Lake Tahoe.

They approved a Long-Term Rental Incentive Grant Pilot Program that will connect owners of unused home to local employees seeking housing. The core of the program centers around providing a one-time cash grant to encourage property owners to convert homes and vacant rooms into long-term rentals. The funds being used for the incentives come from an allocation from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

Halloween Happenings map - Lake Tahoe Historical Society creates map of decorated homes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second consecutive year, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society has published a printable map that shows many South Lake Tahoe area homes that are decorated for Halloween. The map was so popular in 2020 that it was created again.

Museum volunteer Anita Limbird drove around the community at night, noting decorated homes to put on the map. Check out the creativity from your neighbors by walking or driving by.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Escape reality for a night of theatre this weekend at Valhalla’s Boathouse. WordWave 2021. The audience will be captivated by performances of three award-winning one-act plays on Oct. 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m.

The audience will be immersed in the emotion and experiences of these thought-provoking characters and then have the opportunity to ask the playwrights questions about the creative process. Each play features a small cast of local actors, some of which were made for these roles.

Cave Rock lane shifts moved to Thursday for rock work

Lane shifts and reductions will take place Oct. 21 on U.S. 50 through the Cave Rock tunnels at Tahoe as the Nevada Department of Transportation removes rock from the slope above the tunnels. The work was originally scheduled for Oct. 18, but was rescheduled due to weather.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary holds "Pints for Polio" Day at Fox and Hound

New family-friendly winter business to operate at South Lake Tahoe campground

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After responding to a request by the City of South Lake Tahoe for proposals for a Winter Wonderland in the middle of the city, Budgell Enterprises, LLC will be providing a new and unique experience for locals and visitors.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting, Mark Budgell explained why he filed a bid protest after a panel of five City staff members scored the other applicant, Shearer Activities Inc, higher on their proposal.
