USFS facilities around Lake Tahoe start seasonal closures

Seasonal closures apply to many National Forest recreation sites in the Tahoe Basin including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads.

A strong cold front will push through the Sierra and western Nevada on Friday bringing gusty winds, much colder temperatures, and chances for rain and snow showers, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The first attempt is being presented Tuesday, Nov 3 at the City Council meeting. The City plans to allow 200 “Hosted” short term rentals in our neighborhoods. It will require a tenant or owner to host guests in their ‘homes’ to be available to respond to complaints within 60 minutes of issues being reported. On the surface this seems a reasonable alternative until we consider the realities and how this might actually be used.

Valhalla's 25th annual Holiday Faire canceled for 2020
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/01/2020 - 9:47amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One of Valhalla’s most loved community events is the annual Holiday Faire, and they were set to celebrate a milestone 25th year this November. After a successful partnership with The Heritage Foundation to create a Winter Wanderland at the Tallac Historic Site last year, both organizations were excited about expanding the event this year. Unfortunately, due to the size of the Grand Hall and limits on capacity, Valhalla Tahoe’s Board of Directors have been forced to cancel the event.

To highlight the life-threatening dangers of fatigued driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the National Sleep Foundation in recognizing Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 1-8, 2020, and encouraging Californians to stay alert and stay alive.
Time to Fall Back as daylight saving time comes to an end for 2020

The practice of having the time change started in the early 1900s as a way to make better use of daylight during the spring and summer months, so there is an extra hour of sunlight in the evening instead of the morning.
CHP to have drive-through trick-or-treating at their Meyers office

Everyone stays in their cars as they drive through and are handed candy and kid-friendly educational materials. For those who have facebook, the CHP South Lake Tahoe Office put out this video on the event - https://www.facebook.com/CHPSouthLake/videos/1080320122371213/.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/30/2020 - 5:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another eight residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since yesterday. Of those, two are in El Dorado Hills, three in Greater Placerville, two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in the Lake Tahoe region.
One of those new cases, six are aged 18-49, one are aged 50-64, and one 65 or older.
Another 178 people were tested for the coronavirus and 170 negative tests results were received.
There have been another seven assumed recoveries with 121 assumed active cases.
USFS reminds all that fire restrictions remain in place around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/30/2020 - 3:49pmDue to continued dangerous wildfire conditions, emergency fire restrictions remain in effect across all National Forest lands in California, including both the California and Nevada sides of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Smoking outdoors and all recreational fires, including campfires, bonfires, warming fires, wood fires, charcoal fires, or any other kind of outdoor fires, involving solid fuels are prohibited.

Lake Tahoe area firefighters at scene of small fire above Chimney Beach
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/30/2020 - 3:23pm6:00 p.m. Update - The Thunder Fire is contained and is in mop-up status thanks to a quick response by local, state and federal firefighters. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Note: Mop-up means to extinguish or remove burning material near control lines, fell snags, and trench logs to prevent rolling after an area has burned, to make a fire safe, or to reduce residual smoke.

This plan will be used as a dynamic, policy-guiding roadmap to provide insight on strategies and actions that can be taken in the community to help move towards is two climate goals - 100 percent renewable community electricity by 2032 and a 80 percent reduction in community greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two new thought-provoking art exhibits at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) can be enjoyed in a safe and virtual manner.
In LTCC's Haldan Gallery is Loren Madsen's "Worry Beads," a large sculpture of wood-carved beads strung together like a chain, with each bead representing one year between 1945 to 2017. Each individual bead's size tells a story about how many terrorist-caused deaths occurred in that year globally. It makes for a sublime piece of woodworking skill and a powerful political statement.

Road closure for Centerville Reconstruction Project

Larry Schaffer - Long time resident dies at the age of 76
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/28/2020 - 6:12pmLarry Eugene Schaffer passed away on October 28, 2020 after a brief illness. He was 76-years-old.
The son of Harold and Mary Schaffer. Larry grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Larry enlisted in the Marines at age 18 where he was a radio mechanic during the Vietnam War. After the Marines he attended California State University Northridge and received a degree in Sociology. He went on to receive his Master’s degree.
Upon his return from the war Larry married Elizabeth Anne Brewer who preceded him in death after 10 years of marriage. Larry and Beth had one son, Jason Schaffer.
Positive COVID-19 test result in Lake Tahoe Unified School District

LTUSD, with guidance from El Dorado County Public Health Department, has notified individuals at the school site of the need to isolate and monitor their health. It has not been released if the person was a teacher, student or staff member.

I must say, however, despite all of the objectives that the candidates seek to achieve while in office, they are missing an important point. It is not only what you want to accomplish, but how to do so.
My history of involvement has spanned decades in our community and the positions that I have taken are of public record.
Tahoe Conservancy opens restored Tahoe Pines campground to public

They have finished building a new accessible-to-all trail and other public access features at the 8.1-acre site in Meyers. Visitors can enjoy easy access to the Upper Truckee River and experience the newly restored wetlands and wildlife habitat along Lake Tahoe’s largest tributary.

Malfunctioning heater at Tahoe Valley Elementary draws response from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue

A Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) maintenance worker was attempting to repair a heater outside a 4th grade portable classroom. According to Tahoe Valley Principal Christina Grubbs, the heater malfunctioned, causing smoke inside the unit which is outdoors. She said smoke was drawn into the classroom through the air exchange.

Heavenly and Northstar turn on snowmaking machines
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/26/2020 - 8:58pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local Vail resorts took advantage of the season's first cold spell and turned on their snowmaking machines at both Heavenly and Northstar at Lake Tahoe.
They will be working on a solid base for the upcoming 2020-21 winter season as long as the dry, old air continues.
Both of these resorts will be opening on November 20 while Kirkwood is aiming to open on December 4. Kirkwood's systems are set to kick in later this week, conditions permitting.

New date for workshop on future plans for 56-acre project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is being invited to give input on the 56-Acre Project in the heart of South Lake Tahoe. As the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County work out the financial arrangement of using county land, plans are underway for how it will look. Through a grant, the California Tahoe Conservancy gave the funds needed to create the master plan for the area.

Red Flag Warning for Lake Tahoe extended until Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/25/2020 - 6:00pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service has extended the Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin. It is now in affect until noon on Tuesday, October 27.
Expect northeast winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts of 30 to 35 mph. Higher gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible along mid-slopes and wind prone areas tonight and Monday with gusts of 70+ mph along the Sierra Crest.
With a humidity of 15-25 percent during the evening hours, the fire danger remains high as the system moves through.
Road Beat: 2020 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, A Double Wow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/24/2020 - 7:06pmI continue to remark in several recent Road Beats, that Honda is on a roll, after testing this new Honda Civic Hatchback Sport Touring, I have to report that the roll is still accelerating and rather quickly, including its price. Here is a car with loads of utility, outstanding performance, great fuel economy, superb handling and good comfort for a sticker price not $22,380 with the boat ride from Swindon, Wiltshire, England, but $29,780. That’s right a price bump of about 30 percent for the Touring model.

Shots fired at Stateline home during large party
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/24/2020 - 5:41pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Shots were fired at a large party on Upper Kingsbury early Saturday morning according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).
At this time not much information has been released and the matter is under investigation.
DCSO Undersheriff Ron Elges did say that several shots were fired but there were no injuries and nobody was hit by bullets. He said the home where the party was on Tina Court.
There is no verification that the incident was at a vacation home rental. There have been no arrests at this time, Elges said.

Rotary International's World Polio Day is being celebrated around the world this weekend, a time set aside for global health experts and partners to share the service club's progress on the road to polio eradication.
It has been over 60 years since the Jonas Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries remaining polio-endemic, eradicating this crippling disease is almost complete. There is no cure, and only the vaccine to prevent it.
