Free face masks and hand sanitizer for Tahoe’s small businesses
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/14/2020 - 9:29amOne of priorities established by the Tahoe Prosperity Center (TPC) during the pandemic has been to help local businesses find ways to affordably obtain required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Through its participation in the El Dorado County Business Protection Workgroup, TPC has been able to help businesses find funding and develops plans to stay open through the impacts of COVID-19. They now have been able to procure the PPE needed to meet safety guidelines, protect employees and customers, and stay open for business.

I can read from the body language, like when they turn their face to look in the opposite direction or go to the other side of the entry to obviously avoid
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Widespread smoke, chance of rain with incoming system

Widespread smoke and haze issues will continue much of this week. Warm temperatures are expected through Thursday then a cold front will drop readings back to near or even below normal for the upcoming weekend. Increased winds could bring fire weather concerns through the week, but especially Thursday and Friday. A few light showers possible in northeastern California Friday and Saturday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Smoke plume over Lake Tahoe helps out Fork Fire
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/13/2020 - 6:23pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The forecast southwest winds didn't materialize Sunday, not changing the behavior of the Fork Fire as expected. The fire, burning in western El Dorado County, has consumed 1,752 acres and containment remained at seven percent. Personnel working at the fire, which started on Tuesday, number 266.
The large plume of smoke about 200 miles wide that came into the Lake Tahoe Basin Sunday afternoon also covered the area of the Fork Fire, allowing the fuel temperatures at the fire to remain low and keeping the spread contained.
US50 Echo Summit one lane closure starts Sunday night
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/13/2020 - 3:02pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Motorists over US50 Echo Summit will have continuous one-way traffic control starting Sunday, September 13 at 8:00 p.m. The Sidehill Viaduct Project enters its final stages with almost five days of bridge destruction and then complete road closure for two weeks as seven precast, prestressed 96-foot bridge girders are installed, along with associated work.
Sunday, Sept. 13 - 8:00 p.m. - Continuous one-way traffic control begins
Friday, Sept. 18 - About 3:00 a.m. - Full closure of highway

Washoe County issues very first Stage 2 air pollution warning
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/13/2020 - 11:48amWASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - The Washoe County Health District – Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) has issued a Stage 2 Air Pollution Warning for Washoe County based on current air pollution levels. This warning means that all residents should stay indoors and reduce activity levels due to the susceptibility of increased health risks.
This is the first Stage 2 warning ever issued by the Health District and is in place until further notice.
Fork Fire stands at 7% containment, 1736 acres - Critical fire weather Sunday

The winds will start Sunday and could last until Tuesday. The fire is now measured at 1,736 acres and has a containment line around seven percent of the fire.

He and his wife Sonnet, and their three children "are doing the best they can under the circumstance but things are tough for them right now," said a story on GoFundMe.
Douglas County prepares for quick campaign stop by President Trump

Douglas County was contacted by the Secret Service and representatives of the Trump Campaign late in the evening on Wednesday September 9, 2020 requesting use of the Minden-Tahoe Airport for a campaign rally.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District revamps food delivery bus schedule
Submitted by paula on Sat, 09/12/2020 - 8:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Meal Delivery schedule for Phase 1 Distance learning is being changed starting Monday, September 14. At the beginning of the school year there were seven buses and, based on figures from the first two weeks, routes have been adjusted and there are now five buses.
The buses are loaded with breakfasts and lunches and each student can stop by a bus stop or one of the four selected school sited to pick the meals up Monday-Friday (unless a school holiday).
Van Sickle Bi-State Park, Upper Truckee Marsh and other areas closed for public safety

The Conservancy intends these closures to complement similar temporary closures of National Forest Lands to protect the public and firefighters during this time of unprecedented and historic fire conditions.
Temporarily closed sites include:
- Van Sickle Bi-State Park (includes both California and Nevada sides of the park)
- Upper Truckee Marsh (except for Cove East area, accessed by Venice Drive)
- Eagle Rock
Fork Fire re-mapped at 1,647 acres and continues to be 7% contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2020 - 7:18pmThe Fork Fire continues to burn west of Lake Tahoe in the Rubicon drainage area near Loon Lake. The size has been remapped and 1,647 acres have burned and it is seven percent contained.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has downgraded the mandatory evacuation order to an evacuation warning for the areas of Quintette, Stumpy Meadows and Volcanoville. This does not supersede the temporary closure order that prohibits entering or using National Forest System lands, roads and trails on the Eldorado National Forest.

Of those, four are in El Dorado Hills, two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, one in Greater Placerville and one in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz.
Please note the total case count is increasing by seven but a previously reported case has also been transferred out of County from the Lake Tahoe area.
In this group of new cases are five are aged 18-49 and three aged 50-64. .
Chris Sneed: The man behind the 9-11 flag flying over US50

Chris Sneed was working in Incline Village on a pipe replacement project for Granite Construction on Lakeshore Boulevard on 9-11-01. He needed a part and ran into Spitsen Lumber. He was in line and saw the store's 12" television showing a plane hit the first tower, and then the second tower.
City of South Lake Tahoe to fly flags at half-staff for former Recreation Superintendent Judy Crawford

She worked for the City from 1974 until 2003 and was the first woman to hold that position. Crawford was also the President of Great Ideas for Tahoe, or GIFT, during her time in the community.
Born in New Orleans, LA, in 1948, she lived around the country until she settled in South Lake Tahoe.
She started work for the City as a Recreation Supervisor and was eventually promoted to Recreation Superintendent. What she loved the most, teaching young kids how to swim.

Fork Fire: Estimated at 2,200 acres and 7% containment

An infrared (IR) flight was not available again last night and the estimated 2,200 burned acreage is National Guard data from a drone and firefighter observations on the ground. The fire is seven percent contained.

Of those, three are in the Lake Tahoe Region (fourth straight day of three cases), two in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in North County. In this group of new cases are four aged 18-49 and two aged 65 an older.
Another 180 people were tested for the coronavirus and 174 negative tests results were received.
Alpine County News: No outdoor fires on private land, COVID testing change
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/10/2020 - 3:03pmALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Effective immediately, Alpine County health officer Dr. Johnson has ordered all outdoor fires, including campfires, bonfires, pit fires, charcoal fires, or any other open flame fires prohibited on all private lands throughout Alpine County. This prohibition shall be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors at their next meeting and each meeting thereafter and will continue until terminated by action of the Board.
This goes with the closure announced Thursday of the 400,000-acre Carson Ranger District which includes Alpine County.
Dense Smoke Advisory for Lake Tahoe through Friday at minimum

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, the smoke is from multiple fires including the Fork Fire west of Lake Tahoe which sent some smoke into Emerald Bay on Wednesday.
NWS Reno has just issued a Dense Smoke Advisory which is in effect now through Friday at 5:00 p.m. due to the smoke moving into the area faster than previously forecast.
Official groundbreaking of Soroptimist Stadium - Home of Girls' Softball

The club has saved a portion of its fundraising proceeds for over a decade while searching for a major project which suits its mission to empower women and youth. The result of that search broke ground Wednesday - the renovation of the softball field at the South Tahoe Middle School. The socially distant ceremony was held with club members and partners in their endeavor.

While there are no fires in the Lake Tahoe Basin, there are a few close enough to be responsible for sending smoke into the region. The closest is the Fork Fire east of Lake Tahoe about 13 miles northeast of Pollock Pines. To the south is the Slink Fire and northwest is the large North Complex.

Statistics on the Fork Fire have not been updated all day. As of 11:00 a.m. Wednesday the estimated size was 2,500 acres.

Of those, three are in the Lake Tahoe Region, and three in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue. In this group of new cases are five aged 18-49 and one aged 50-64.
Another 252 people were tested for the coronavirus and 246 negative tests results were received.
There have been another four assumed recoveries. There has been no change in hospitalizations/ICU (0/0) and there are no suspected cases of COVID-19 in the hospital.

If there were just two things residents should know, South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacol said it would be to "evacuate early" and "have a plan."
Reno-Tahoe Airport says "no" to Trump rally planned for private hangar
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/09/2020 - 1:32pmThe Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority has informed private airport hangar tenants who were planning to host a campaign rally for President Donald Trump on Saturday that the 5,000-person gathering would be in violation of their lease agreements due to Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak’s directive of no gatherings in excess of 50 people and Washoe County’s recommendation to limit the number to 25 or less.
All National Forests in California now closed temporarily
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/09/2020 - 11:53amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to dangerous fire conditions, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Regional Forester Randy Moore has just announced that ALL National Forests in California will close Wednesday, September 9, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. until further notice. This order includes the California and Nevada sides of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. On Monday, eight National Forests were closed and now an additional ten from the state have been added to the list.
The Attic to reopen September 21; Donations accepted starting Monday

Nominations sought for 29th annual Best in Basin Awards

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community is invited to a webinar to review the City of South Lake Tahoe's draft Climate Action Plan (CAP) on Wednesday, September 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The City has completed its draft CAP and is in the midst of the public review period. This CAP is critical for reducing emissions in the region and will also provide benefits to the community through supporting local economic development, improving wildfire resilience, reducing air pollution, improving traffic conditions, and improving public health and quality of life.
Liberty Utilities does not anticipate a safety power shutoff

PG&E to the west of Lake Tahoe has implemented PSPSs and there was concern of Liberty customers that the same would happen around Lake Tahoe.

Creek Fire grows to over 143,000 acres

The fire, which started Friday night, continues to grow under extreme conditions causing crowning and wind driven runs and long range spotting. There is no containment at this time.
Smoke from the Creek Fire has filled the Lake Tahoe Basin for the past three days.

Fire burning west of Lake Tahoe near Loon Lake

UPDATE 7:30PM: The Fork Fire in the Pacific Ranger District is 15 miles northeast of Pollock Pines. It is now 500 acres with 0 percent containment and is spreading toward the 2014 King Fire burn scar in the Rubicon drainage on the Georgetown Ranger District.
Constitution Week celebrated by local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/08/2020 - 9:51amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the resolution that annually celebrated the Constitution during the week of September 17 to 23.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Lake Tahoe Chapter will honor the Constitution with a display in the South Lake Tahoe branch of the El Dorado library. It went up September 1 and will be there the entire month.
USFS: Backcountry areas closed to camping except PCT and Desolation Wilderness
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 8:48pmThe U.S. Forest Service tonight added additional restrictions to its previously announced fire restrictions and closures of campgrounds and day use areas on U.S. Forest Service land in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin starting September 7 at 5:00 p.m.
There is now an emergency camping prohibition that goes into effect on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Red Flag Warning
This warning is in place due to gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierrs, and Eastern Nevada Counites. Fire Zone 271 and Fire Zone 272.
Forests, campgrounds and day-use areas to close in California and Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 12:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All campgrounds and day use areas on U.S. Forest Service land in California and the Lake Tahoe Basin must close at 5:00 p.m. Monday, September 7 due to the unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions and extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit.
The USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region has announced the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts:
Coast Guard shuts down illegal charter at Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 12:02pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The U.S. Coast Guard has shut down an illegal charter boat operating in Lake Tahoe.
On Sunday, September 7, the crew of a 29-foot response boat from the Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe boarded the 48-foot pleasure craft, Cirque. On board were 19 passengers though the boat was not permitted to have six or more.
They discovered the following violations on the Cirque:
- Violation of 46 C.F.R. 176.100 (a) for not having a valid Certificate of Inspection
- Violation of 46 C.F.R 15.401(a) for not having an individual with an appropriate license
Memorial unveiled during commemorative run/walk for victims of 2011 Carson City IHOP shooting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 8:32amThe Nevada National Guard and Carson City community members took part in a memorial run on Sunday to commemorate the victims of the September 6, 2011 shooting at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP). This is the ninth year a memorial walk/run has been held in memory of Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt.
Slink Fire southwest of Topaz Lake at 20,795 acres, 31% contained
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/06/2020 - 11:32pmThe Slink Fire burning in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness area of the Humboldt-Toiyable National Forest and Stanislaus National Forest area. So far, 20,795 acres have burned and the 679 personnel on the fire have it 31 percent contained.
The fire started Saturday, August 29 at approximately 6:00 p.m. and it is lightning caused and burning two miles west of the town of Coleville.
There was increased fire behavior Sunday in timber strands. In the area are Ponderosa Pine, Pinyon-Juniper and mixed conifer.
Creek Fire grows to over 73,000 acres, no containment
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/06/2020 - 11:09pmMONDAY UPDATE 9:30AM: New figures for the fire were updated this morning. The Creek Fire is now at 78,790 acres with no containment. Almost 1,000 firefighters are working at the fire scene which is under gusty wind and high heat warnings Monday.
