Tahoe Chamber hosts virtual Town Hall with El Dorado County on COVID-19 response

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Chamber is holding its second Virtual Town Hall meeting in as many weeks on the local response to the COVID-19 crisis response.
Last week, Chamber CEO Steve Teshara hosted South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin. On Friday, March 27, he will host El Dorado County District 5 Supervisor Sue Novasel, and the County's Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams. The event is on the Zoom platform from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Forest Service to close developed recreation facilities but keep forest trails open
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/26/2020 - 4:03pmUSDA Forest Service (USFS) has closed its developed recreation facilities on National Forest land in California in order to assist people in abiding by Governor Newsom's recent statewide shelter-in-place order.
They will be closed until at least April 30 in an attempt to avoid groups of people and promote social distancing of staying more than six feet apart during the COVID-19 crisis.
In a press release, USFS officials said that while they appreciated the public's interest in outdoor recreation they needed to close to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Tahoe Magic serves the community during times of crisis

The 501c3 non-profit was founded in 1994 and has helped low-income families on a year-round basis with one-time crisis funding, but that role is now growing due to the current COVID-19 health and economic crisis. Tahoe Magic recently launched its new website TahoeMagic to show how those in need can be assisted.

This amounts to a 3.05 percent increase compared to February 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,011,785,879 according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Lake Tahoe boat inspection program temporarily halted in response to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/25/2020 - 11:31amLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Watercraft inspections to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Lake Tahoe have halted until at least April 16 in response to Nevada and California Executive Orders on COVID-19, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District. Watercraft inspection stations, as well as the boat ramps at Cave Rock, Nevada and Tahoe City, California, will remain closed until it is deemed safe for personnel to return to work, they said.
Love of dance helping South Lake Tahoe youth cope with coronavirus seclusion
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/25/2020 - 9:09amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students enrolled at Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio in South Lake Tahoe cannot attend classes in person due to coronavirus restrictions, but they are still enjoying their love of dance with online dance classes.
Marcia Sarosik, better known as Ms. Marcia, has been teaching dance in the community for 41 years and this is the first time she's had to close the studio for an extended period. One of her former students, Chelsea Wightman, created a program for dancers to log onto to stay connected to the studio on James Avenue.

Originally set for Sunday, June 7, it has been rescheduled to combine with the 18th annual Tour de Tahoe, set for Sunday, September 13, 2020. This due to the uncertainty of current and changing CDC coronavirus COVID-19 restrictions and mandates by national, state and county health agencies.

For Wednesday: Snow likely before 11:00 a.m., then snow showers after 11:00 a.m. Some thunder is also possible. High near 35. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
El Dorado County backs Governor's 'Stay at Home' order - Do not visit to recreate or vacation

Staying in one of these types of temporary housing is not considered "essential" by Governor Newsom's March 18th "Stay at Home" order.
Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday morning

The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.

South Shore of Tahoe VHR industry companies have blocked calendars to prevent reservations, issued full refunds for cancelations, and offered incentives encouraging visitors to postpone travel to later dates.
We all need to do our part to eliminate the spread of COVID-19 with social distancing, limiting exposure to our friends, family, and neighbors, and make every attempt to flatten the curve.
One confirmed case of community transmitted coronavirus in El Dorado County

The resident acquired the COVID-19 virus from an unknown source. This brings the count up to three of County residents with confirmed cases, one is a resident but was not in the county at the time of contraction and illness, and another was travel related.

Jury trials in South Lake Tahoe and California suspended for two months
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/24/2020 - 10:25amCalifornia Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye on Monday issued a statewide order suspending all jury trials in California's superior courts for 60 days and allowing courts to immediately adopt new rules to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In South Lake Tahoe, Judge Suzanne Kingsbury had previously announced new practices in the El Dorado County courtrooms and suspension of the use of juries until April 16.

They said that, as a small and remote mountain-lake community, healthcare, support services, and facilities lack the capacity and resources to handle an outbreak of COVID-19.

Due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic schools across the country, including UC Davis, are shut down. TERC has been closed its science centers and suspended regular program offerings.
They said they realize the challenges many parents who have had to home school their children may need help getting through the normal day-to-day schooling.
Washoe County reports 19 new cases of COVID-19; Douglas 1 and no new cases in El Dorado County

Due to the influx of cases, the Health District will not provide specific details or any other information due to medical information and privacy requirements.
The additional 19 confirmed cases were from 2-plus days of testing due to the increased number of tests being submitted to the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory from throughout the region and state.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office: Gardnerville man fatally shot was attempting a home invasion
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/23/2020 - 3:14pmThe Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified a 36-year-old Gardnerville man who died Saturday from apparent gunshot wounds.
Joshua McCarthy, 36, was reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with a homeowner in the 1400 block of Bumblebee Drive while attempting a home invasion, during which the homeowner shot McCarthy, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release.
McCarthy was not known to the homeowner.
City of South Lake Tahoe asks lodging industry to not rent to visitors during "Stay at Home" order

California Governor Newsom issued a state-wide Stay at Home Order on March 19, 2020, which bans all non-essential travel, including staying in accommodations in Lake Tahoe.

In preparation for increased utilization and operational capacity surging expected for the next several months, TCH has made the changes to their sheltering and support service programs. South Tahoe Public Utility District to waive late fees and suspend disconnections

Utility District’s Board of Directors just approved waiving late fees for bills due at the end of March and suspending service disconnections for non-payments.
“South Tahoe Public Utility District is your public utility, and we want to do all that we can to support you during these unique times,” says John Thiel, General Manager. “I want you to know that we have taken additional steps to make sure your water and wastewater services are safe and secure under any circumstance.”

A low-pressure area will approach late in the day and move through southern Nevada tonight. This will bring light mountain snow showers with a few valley rain showers. Barton Foundation opens COVID-19 Response Fund for community aid

Our freedom to move, access to food and entertainment and, most importantly, our health. Like new parents discovering how much time they squandered in their previous lives, we will eventually come to terms with our isolated existence, only to return to our ordinary lives in a shock to our discovery. Until then, we need to learn to appreciate our time with our families, learn to cope with isolation and keep ourselves and our Community safe by keeping to the plan.
Fatal shooting in Douglas County under investigation
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/22/2020 - 9:28amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Department (DCSO) Is investigating a shooting that left one dead in Gardnerville.
At 9:31 p.m. on March 21, 2020, DCSO deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area of the 1400 block of Bumblee Drive. When they arrived they found a deceased male, a victim of gunshot wounds.
Deputies located, detained and interviewed all parties they believed to be involved.
Another earthquake east of Lake Tahoe - This time 3.5 magnitude
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/21/2020 - 7:19pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There was another earthquake Saturday night in the Carson Valley in the same location as Friday's magnitude 4.5.
On Saturday at 7:53 p.m., an earthquake measured 3.51 and is in the area 4.1 mi SSE of Carson_City near Indian Hills. It was 9.80 km below the surface.
This earthquake is one in a series of over 80 aftershocks since Friday night. Most were very small and under magnitude 2.1 before Saturday.

TTD is asking riders to contact them with what routes and runs are most important. In the meantime, they have implemented safety measures for both riders and employees to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra creates online auction in place of Elegant Evening

With the casinos closing and guidelines from the Center for Disease Control advising people to not attend large functions, the event will not be held this year.

4.5 earthquake centered just east of Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/20/2020 - 5:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE Update 7:20 p.m. 3/20/20 - The University of Nevada Reno Seismological Lab has updated the magnitude of tonight's earthquake to 4.5. It centered near Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills, Nevada.
Since the initial earthquake, there have been four aftershocks at 2.0, 1.6, 1.6, 1.5 and more are expected.
The 4.5 was 4.3 mi SSE of Carson_City at a depth of 8.38 km.
These follow a series of small earthquakes in the same area at the beginning of the week.
5.0 earthquake centered just east of Lake Tahoe in Indian Hills

No reports are in yet for the 6:33 p.m. earthquake and this story will be updated.
El Dorado County COVID-19 Friday update
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/20/2020 - 5:27pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A man from El Dorado County who traveled to the State of Washington has a confirmed case of COVID-19. It is believed he was exposed while there and was tested in Placer County.
It is unknown why he took the test in another county.
His symptoms appeared when got back from Washington and immediately isolated himself and did all of the recommended steps.
“His symptoms were mild, he self-isolated when he became symptomatic as health officials have been suggesting, and he has fully recovered,” said El Dorado County Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams.
When times are tough, South Lake Tahoe volunteers and businesses step up
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/20/2020 - 1:51pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As one would expect in South Lake Tahoe, the community has been coming together to help others during these trying times and uncertainty.
Base Camp Pizza has been one of those businesses that have helped out the community. On Friday they dropped off 120 pizzas, 75 salads and 100 pasta dishes to Bijou Community School for families there who were picking up kids' homework and other supplies to use for at-home study. Local girl scouts donated boxes of cookies to hand out.
Senior Citizen services and store hours in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/20/2020 - 12:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The threat of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19 is a scary one for all people, especially the more vulnerable citizens of the community including senior citizens.
The South Lake Tahoe Senior Center is closed but nutrition services are being provided on a "to go" basis. Those 60 and older can stop by Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and get a hot meal to go for a $3 suggested donation. Their Meals on Wheels program serves about 80 seniors with hot meals delivered Monday through Friday.
Lake Tahoe Community College to close campus Friday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2020 - 11:20pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif, - The entire campus of Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed to students, the public and most employees starting Friday, March 20 due to the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation.
On Thursday, both California Governor Gavin Newsom and El Dorado County issued shelter-in-place orders, the state's order beginning Thursday and the County's Friday night.
The South Lake Tahoe campus was nearing the end of the winter quarter when the announcement was made.
El Dorado County issues "Shelter in Place" for South Lake Tahoe and rest of county
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2020 - 5:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams has issued a "Shelter in Place" for all county residents effective on Friday, March 20 starting at 11:59 p.m.
Residents are being directed to remain at home except to engage in essential activities in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Earlier today, Placer County did the same thing which affects North Lake Tahoe.
There are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in El Dorado County and this action is meant to help keep the spread minimal when cases are confirmed.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Chamber and City of South Lake Tahoe will hold a virtual Town Hall meeting for businesses on the local response to COVID-19.
Mayor Jason Collin and Tahoe Chamber CEO Steve Teshara will address the City of South Lake Tahoe and the business community’s response to COVID-19 via Zoom on Friday, March 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The public will have a chance to ask questions.
The virtual meeting is limited to the first 100 people who log on or call in.

El Dorado County Superior Court limiting access in response to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/19/2020 - 3:21pmEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Due to the current public health crisis, the El Dorado County Superior Court will be limited access to courthouses, effective immediately. They currently plan to resume normal operations on April 17, 2020, though with the rapidly unfolding coronavirus situation, this could change.
Courtrooms will be practice social distancing, including at least two seats between people in the gallery. Members of the public are strongly discouraged from attending court proceedings unless they are statutory support persons or those who have been subpoenaed.
