South Lake Tahoe man arrested as suspect in local home burglaries
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/12/2020 - 8:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A local man has been arrested as a suspect in two residential burglaries in the 1100 block of Fairway Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
At 6:40 a.m. on March 9, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was contacted by a citizen who called 911 after hearing glass breaking from a neighbor's house. The caller's husband walked outside and said he saw a suspect walking away from the area. When the suspect was confronted by the husband, he fled on foot. Officers found only broken glass and no entry was made.
LTUSD asks students and staff to self-quarantine if returning from any COVID-19 infected area
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/11/2020 - 10:49pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sent out a letter to all students and staff concerning the district's Pandemic Preparedness Plan in regards to travel and self-quarantine.
Effective Monday, March 9, 2020, all students and staff returning from travel out-of-the-country or from COVID-19 infected areas in California or other areas of the United States are strongly recommended to self-quarantine in their home for 14 consecutive days beginning the date of their return to South Lake Tahoe.
Knights of Columbus to hold annual St. Patrick's Day dinner - Canceled
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/11/2020 - 10:24pmTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. The Knights of Columbus at Saint Theresa Church in South Lake Tahoe are preparing for their annual Saint Patrick's dinner to be held on Sunday, March 15.
The dinner will be a traditional corned beef and cabbage meal with potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread and plenty of desserts. It will run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the church's Grace Hall, located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe plastic bag ban to meet state regulations

The ban was to apply to all other retail outlets after one year, but that ban was delayed by the City Council at that time and then later amended to remove that portion.

Both concerts scheduled for this week have been canceled.
All upcoming kindergarten tours have been canceled.

Series of earthquakes north of Truckee

According to the University of Nevada Seismological, the following seven earthquakes were recorded from .6 to 3.9 magnitudes:

Three arrested in South Lake Tahoe on gun and theft charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/10/2020 - 9:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local residents were arrested on March 9 on various gun and theft charges after being found asleep in a vehicle on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., an alert officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the church located at 3580 Blackwood Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by two men and a woman, all who appeared to be sleeping.

Depending on how likely the area is to respond online, households will receive either an invitation encouraging them to respond online, by phone or on a paper questionnaire.

CAPP Fund created to help South Lake Tahoe high school students with college application costs

The CAPP Fund was opened in 2020 with a goal of increasing access to higher education by helping high school seniors at both South Tahoe High School and George Whittell High School with the costs of a four-year college application. Each application costs between $60 and $100 and the costs can add up when seeking the college(s) of their choice.

Originally planned for March 21, 2020, organizers with the Barton Foundation canceled the event to "protect community members, employees and care providers in the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19."

More mild and sunny conditions will return for the last half of the work week before another storm approaches for the weekend according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Aging and caregiver educational series in South Lake Tahoe

The series will provide instruction and support for people who care for, or plan to care for, a family member or friend aged 60 years or older.

21,000 more El Dorado County ballots counted: Measures M and B on way to defeat
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/06/2020 - 5:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Elections department released another count of ballots from Tuesday's primary election on Friday afternoon.
Since election night, 21,446 more ballots have been counted in the county and those results were released at 4:40 p.m. Elections officials say there are just about 1,000 left to count. These late numbers come from ballots received in the mail and left in the area drop boxes near election day. It is unknown the location where the remaining 1,000 ballots are from.
Area agencies planning and using precaution in case COVID-19 hits South Lake Tahoe

There are no current reported cases of COVID-19 in South Lake Tahoe/El Dorado County, Alpine County or Douglas County, but local agencies want to be prepared, just in case people come down with the virus.
DCSO seeks public's help in identifying suspects in alleged Lake Tahoe crimes
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/06/2020 - 12:13pmSTATELINE, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) is asking for the public's help in identifying two men wanted for questioning in connection with alleged crimes in the Lake Tahoe casino area. Rewards are being offered in both cases.
They are investigating a theft case in which the suspect pictured above allegedly stole the victim's wallet, removed large amounts of cash and disposed of the wallet in a casino restroom. DSCO says the suspect left the casino property in a white vehicle similar to a Subaru wagon.
$10,000 reward offered for information in South Lake Tahoe homicide

On December 16, 2019, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were alerted about a body found in a house on Lodi Avenue. When they arrived, they found 61-year-old Jorge Alberto Lemus Campos deceased.

Originally from Kauai, Hawaii, Dr. Oishi first traveled to Lake Tahoe in 1979 and has made South Lake Tahoe his second home ever since. Noboru and his wife, Jeri, split their time between Tahoe and Texas. Besides being an oncologist, Dr. Oishi and Jeri owned the Enchanted Florist in South Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe and the Sierra should see snow and winds this weekend

Expect increasing southwest winds Friday into Saturday with the strongest winds expected to be near and north of US-50 where gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely. Wind prone locations along the US-395 corridor could potentially see gusts to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Douglas County crash claims life of 70-year-old woman

At 9:02 p.m., NHP troopers responded to the serious injury crash involving three people in two vehicles.

Family Resource Center “Bookworks” celebrates 27 years serving South Lake Tahoe community

The nonprofit's store is currently located in the Lakeview Plaza, 3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd # 9, South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Their current hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
Through the generous support of the local community with donations of books and the volunteers who manage the store, there are currently over 5000 books that cover over 160 genres for sale.

City Council has narrowed down their search to four men, all of whom will be at a public Meet and Greet on Monday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Idle Hour located at 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
The idea behind the meet and greet is to give the public a chance to get to know the candidates before the City Council closed session scheduled for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to select the new city manager.

South Lake Tahoe community meets new LTUSD superintendent
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/03/2020 - 9:41pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Todd Cutler is officially the new superintendent for Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). The Board of Trustees unanimously approved his contract and he was introduced to the standing room only crowd that gathered to meet him.
He and his wife Dee Dee were at the meeting to meet the community.
"This is a dream come true," said Dr. Cutler. "I have always wanted to come home. This is such a cool place."
El Dorado County Election Results

As of 11:38 p.m. Tuesday, all 198 of the precincts have been counted with 52,093 ballots of the 124,979 registered voters, or 41.68 percent.
Measures affecting the County portions of the South Shore, Measure B and Measure M are not meeting the required 2/3 vote to pass at this time.

Join The Sierra Nevada Alliance on Earth Day, April 22, 2020 for a Farm to Table Dinner prepared by Celebrity Chef Darren Weston, The Wild and Scenic Film Festival On Tour, or both. All proceeds support the Alliance’s efforts to protect and restore the Sierra.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a farm to table dinner prepared by celebrity chef Darren Weston at the Valhalla Grand Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

Strong early voting in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/03/2020 - 11:39amEL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - El Dorado County voters have historically been a mail-in ballot voter, with about 80 percent of those registered putting their ballot in the mail.
So far, over 34,000 ballots have been received by the El Dorado County Elections Office and tabulated. This is about 35 percent of the 124,353 registered and eligible to cast their vote in this primary election.
South Lake Tahoe City Council narrows down list of city manager candidates to four
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/02/2020 - 7:53pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe City Council narrowed down their candidate pool for the open city manager position to four during a special closed session meeting Monday, March 2, 2020.
The names of the four candidates will be released later this week according to the SLT Communications Manager Chris Fiore.
The public is invited to a reception with the finalists on Monday, March 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Idle Hour, 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
Final interviews will be held in closed session following the Council's March 10 meeting.
Nominations sought for El Dorado County Senior of the Year

Consider nominating them for the Senior of the Year Award.
The annual “Senior of the Year” award will be presented by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors on May 19, 2020, at the Board of Supervisors Chambers, 330 Fair Lane in Placerville, and is hosted by the El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging and the Commission on Aging.
