Monthly gaming report: Good January for Lake Tahoe casinos on south shore
Submitted by paula on Fri, 02/28/2020 - 11:14amSTATELINE, Nev. - Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,038,196,869 for the month of January 2020. This amounts to a 5.48 percent increase compared to January 2019, when licensees reported a gaming win of $984,227,816 according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

After unseasonable warmth the past few days, expect a sharp change in the weather Saturday evening into Sunday as a powerful cold front sweeps across the Sierra and northern Nevada.
South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler says goodbye; March retirement date set

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.
Dry, warm conditions lead to a snowpack at 47% of average
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/27/2020 - 12:44pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The monthly manual survey of the snowpack at Phillips Station, just west of Lake Tahoe, revealed data that won't catch many by surprise. There is 29 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 11.5 inches at the location near US50 and Sierra-at-Tahoe Road. This is 47 percent of the March average at this spot.
The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack, which provides a more accurate forecast of spring runoff.

Heartbreaking end after police pull drowning dog out of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/27/2020 - 10:00amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On just after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a dog that was hit by a vehicle near the 3400 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
Lobo, a large Siberian Husky, was accidentally let out of a hotel complex while the family was away. Witnesses tried to render aid at the scene but Lobo panicked, bit them and ran off.
Special meeting of LTUSD board; New superintendent announcement expected March 10

The only item on the agenda is to discuss "superintendent employment." Reportedly the district is still on track to announce the board's chosen candidate at their next regular meeting on March 10 and is using this meeting to finalize a contract.

Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/26/2020 - 3:15pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quarterly reports on the sales tax received by the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County (EDC) were released this week. The quarter ending September 2019 shows the County's taxable sales in the unincorporated area grew by 4.3 percent when compared to the same period in 2018. In South Lake Tahoe, taxable sales grew by 6.0 percent. County-wide including both cities within its boundaries saw a 5.1 percent increase. In comparison, the Sacramento region was up 4.5 percent.

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.
Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

On Sunday, March 1, it is AAA and Majors Warm-Up Clinic in the South Tahoe High School Gym. Go "knock off some rust" before player evaluations on March 15 and 22 (reserve time for those two dates here).
The AAA players clinic will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Majors will hold theirs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Vehicle reported stolen in Placerville leads to arrests made in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/25/2020 - 6:48pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Thursday, February 20, an officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on routine patrol located a vehicle that was believed to be part of a crime in the Placerville area.
At 8:00 a.m. two days prior, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to a call near Placerville about an alleged carjacking. The victim knew the suspects and had been riding in the vehicle with them at the time of the incident. They had just driven from South Lake Tahoe to the Placerville area where the crime occurred, EDSO said.

Mr. Robison will explain how Mark Twain wound up in Virginia City, and on occasion in the Lake Tahoe basin. He will also share his discovery of a vast collection of antique 1860's type from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City where Mark Twain was a reporter and city editor during the early silver discoveries of the Comstock Lode.

The Moose Lodge sponsored their annual Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment by donating $300 to cover the costs of the food and associated expenses necessary to provide the hot, full-course meal served at the dinner.
New digital billboard up to help combat trash in Lake Tahoe

While hundred of visitors snapped selfies with the bear, others mingled with him as he reminded all to throw away their broken sleds, rather than leaving them littered on the snow.
To coincide with the bear visits, a new billboard went up in Folsom, California with the same message.

Lake Tahoe forecast: Dry end to February, what does March look like?
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/23/2020 - 5:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lighter winds return Monday and persist through much of the week as high pressure settles into northeast California and western Nevada. Dry conditions continue this week with high temperatures remaining above average. Low pressure may impact the region next weekend with gusty winds along with rain and snow showers.
Any rain or snowfall amounts will not be heavy but could cause travel impacts and will be welcome after a dry February, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

But even so, I appreciate the value of quality, highly-trained Firefighter/Paramedics. I would guess that those many individuals whose lives they have saved would agree. To effectively perform their jobs, they need the best equipment possible and the funding to obtain it.
I am fully in support of Measure B and encourage all residents to vote YES!

"I’m new and the staff is still getting to know me," says his post on The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe's website. But he is affectionate, mellow and shy.
Wilson is microchipped, neutered and current on vaccinations. He weighs nine pounds.
His adoption fee is $75.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra and El Dorado County roadwork February 23 - February 29

They are only asking for $52 per year, which is just $4.33 per household per month. Most of us spend more than that in one trip to Starbucks. Let’s help our firefighters!

Sitting here at the end of February with snowpack numbers dwindling, snow lovers are chomping at the bit, waiting to see the storm track shift back our way.
Still, the mountains have been buzzing with activity as skiers and snowboarders race to the mountains to enjoy what natural snow we’ve received and are ever thankful for the assist from local resorts’ snowmaking operations.

Almost half of the West in dry-drought conditions, including Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2020 - 10:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It isn't news to those who live in or frequent the Lake Tahoe region, the area has been experiencing very dry conditions this winter. Even though dry, it is not bad enough yet to put Tahoe into a drought category. The Drought Monitor released this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) places 45 percent of the country in the D0-D4 categories, or abnormally dry to exceptional drought. This is a big change from 2018-19. At that time Lake Tahoe had well above average snow, but 62.6 percent of the U.S. fell into the Do-D4 categories.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On March 26, 2018, during a run down a chute at Kirkwood, Jen Dawn's life changed forever.
The 41-year-old South Lake Tahoe mother of two had completed one run down the sister chutes and was hiking over to the second when she slipped and fell 20 feet off of a cliff onto rocks and ice, landing on her right leg. The fall shattered that leg, lacerated her face and caused tooth loss.
Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe recognizes World Spay Day with free surgeries
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2020 - 12:56pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is joining local veterinarians as well as the Town of Truckee in providing free spay and neuter surgeries during World Spay Day on February 25 and February's Spay/Neuter Awareness Month around Lake Tahoe.
The procedures are available for qualifying cats or dogs in the community to mark World Spay Day on February 25th, 2020. South Lake Tahoe appointments are full that day, but there are still some available on the North Shore.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2020 - 12:32pmSTATELINE, Nev. - There was an exciting end to the Presidents’ Day Weekend for Dorothy Boone of Temple, Texas as she hit the Three Card Poker progressive jackpot at Harveys Lake Tahoe on the night of Monday, Feb. 17, resulting in a win of $1,340,518.
Dorothy had been playing for approximately one hour when she hit the progressive jackpot with a Royal Flush in Spades on the 3 Card Poker table at Harveys. It was a first time Lake Tahoe visit for Dorothy and her husband, which almost didn’t happen as their group had originally planned to visit Laughlin, Nevada.
Forest Service hosts off-highway vehicle grant open house in South Lake Tahoe

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host an open house in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, to provide information and seek public input on their annual California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division grant applications. The OHMVR applications request funding for trail maintenance and operation of facilities for off-highway vehicle access in the Tahoe Basin.

South Tahoe Public Utility District: Christmas Valley water safe to drink
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/19/2020 - 8:21pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, South Tahoe Public Utility District discovered food-grade oil in their Christmas Valley water tank during a routine inspection. Up to one gallon of food-grade oil leaked into the 200,000-gallon water tank due to a mechanical issue and the tank was immediately taken out of service. Results from the water samples collected from the top and
bottom of the water tank and two neighboring homes meet all drinking water standards.
There is no evidence that oil entered the water distribution system.

The Tahoe Love Bakery is up and running out of Erin Renee Hudak's kitchen in South Lake Tahoe. With her cottage business permit, business license and health inspection in place, Erin opened her home-based business on December 19, 2019.
Letter: Why we are still voting No on Measure B

We have had multiple conversations with LVFPD Board Member, Leona Allen. Ms. Hall sent a letter seeking information and clarification to Chief Alameda which was published in a local newspaper and went unanswered.
