As of 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, the following road controls and closures are in place:
US50
Chains Required, All Vehicles Except 4-Wheel Drive with Snow Tires - on US-50 from mile post 59.8 in El Dorado County to mile post 70.6 in El Dorado County in California.
Chains or Snow Tires Required - on US-50 from mile post 14.0 in Carson City County to mile post 5.4 in Lyon County in Nevada.
Conservancy awards $912K in grants for projects around Lake Tahoe Basin

Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 3:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) not attending school for at least three weeks, District officials have coordinated a plan to get breakfast and lunch to them. These two meals were offered by LTUSD at each school.
Bread & Broth 4 Kids has also created a plan to distribute bags of food to youth on their program.
Family Resource Center closes and cancels annual Cinco de Mayo celebration due to COVID-19 concerns
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 1:54pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Family Resource Center in South Lake Tahoe has closed out of concern of the spread of the COVID-19 virus and recommendations from health professionals, LTUSD and the State of California.
They plan on reopening on April 12, 2020.
Their therapeutic service clients will be contacted to have phone/internet discussions. All classes though are suspended as are meetings and food distribution.
The nonprofit also had to cancel its 17th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival and March 26 Immigration Forum on March 26th.
Key's Cafe offering free breakfast to South Lake Tahoe children

Starting Monday, the Keys Cafe is offering free breakfast to children in grades K-6th with 30 percent off for parents. Keys Cafe is located at 2279 Lake Tahoe Blvd. #2, South Lake Tahoe. It is behind Enterprise Rental Car near Tahoe Keys Blvd. The free offer is good from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. M-F until April 1.

South Lake Tahoe grocery stores trying to fill shelves
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 8:50amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to grocery items flying off the shelves at stores, some local businesses have changed their hours to allow time to restock. Hot items are toilet paper, paper towels, milk, eggs, and canned food items.
Both Safeway stores on the South Shore have changed their hours to 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. instead of being 24-hours. The pharmacy hours have remained the same.
LTCC on snow delay; School lays out its response to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 7:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is on a delayed start of 10:00 a.m. this morning to allow time for snow removal operations to catch up around town.
LTCC plans on being open this coming week with staff on hand to assist students. They have moved face-to-face Winter quarter final exams to March 16-20 and have put social distancing measures into place on campus to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Winter arrives the first week of Spring in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 7:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Tuesday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations through Tuesday of 4 to 10 inches and 12 to 18 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Chilly and unsettled weather is expected to persist into the first half of next week with a stormer weather pattern possibly continuing through the end of March according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Day-long traffic jam over Echo Summit as vehicles leave Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/15/2020 - 6:39pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sunday has been one big traffic jam for travelers trying to head west over Echo Summit. And as it the normal case, when traffic backs up the mapping apps direct drivers to side residential roads, many of which were unplowed and hard to navigate.
As of 7:30 p.m., traffic is still very heavy in Meyers and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is currently working on two accidents, one west of Sierra-at-Tahoe Road and the other east of Strawberry.
Some utilities to cease temporary shutoffs due to impacts from COVID-19 pandemic
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/15/2020 - 3:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As residents face not only health uncertainties but also financial and employment uncertainties, three utility companies have announced they have suspended service disconnections for non-payment due to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 health emergency.
So far, Liberty Utilities, Southwest Gas and NV Energy have all made this announcement, but each has different procedures at this time.
Liberty Utilities has suspended service disconnections for non-payment. This temporary suspension, through at least May 1, 2020, includes residential and business customers.
Governor orders all Nevada K-12 schools to close Monday through at least April 6
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/15/2020 - 2:52pmNevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced Sunday that all K-12 schools in the state will close through early April as the state looks to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
They will close through at least April 6. Sisolak said further closures are possible, depending on the state of the pandemic at that time.
“I realize this will cause hardships for our families, our students, and our school staff,” he said. “I assure you we have not reached this decision lightly.”
Diamond Peak in Incline Village to suspend operations for one week

If on the roads, check conditions often and go slow as there is snow and ice on the roads and a lot of traffic. There is another 21" of snow forecast for Sunday at lake level.

Over the years, the number of meals served weekly has changed, but currently, Bread & Broth (B&B) serves two meals, Monday Meal and Second Serving on Fridays, every week of the year. As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, B&B relies on the generosity of time and monetary support from our local community to provide the wonderful and nutritious meals that are enjoyed by our dinner guests.
Sierra-at-Tahoe to close for at least 72 hours
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 8:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A day after they canceled events that were deemed high-risk, Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced they are suspending operations on Sunday, March 15 for at least 72 hours.
In a statement, Sierra-at-Tahoe said they apologized for the short notice and for any inconvenience it may post to their customers.
Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Sugar Bowl also closing due to coronavirus concerns

"We believe this is in the best interest of our guests, employees, & local community," said Squaw Valley in a release.
Sugar Bowl has suspended operations until further notice due to the impacts of the coronavirus.
Other resorts will most likely be making similar announcements.

Multiple accidents, heavy snow, reported on Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadways
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 4:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a busy day on the highways around Lake Tahoe today with several accidents and road closures.
As of 5:00 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement and rescue teams have responded to a reported head-on collision on Pioneer Trail, west of Golden Bear, a collision on Pioneer Trail and US 50 in Meyers, a collision on US 50 at Kyburz, a car off the roadway on SR89 near Emerald Bay and two collisions on US88 near Kirkwood. There are also numerous collisions on I80 and on the North Shore.
Vail Resorts shutting down all North American operations, including those in Lake Tahoe

Vail Resorts announced Saturday that they are suspending the operations of all of their North American mountain resorts, retail stores and corporate offices beginning tomorrow, March 15, 2020, for at least one week (through March 22) to assess the rest of the season.
This includes Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Resort and Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area.
Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe to close due to coronovirus concerns
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 2:52pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) will be joining Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and closing on the advice of El Dorado County due to safety concerns stemming from the coronavirus COVID-19.
BGCLT will be closed the same time frame as LTUSD which will be determined weekly, but at least for the week of March 16-20.
At this time, BGCLT Executive Director Jude Wood said there is a possibility they may not be able to reopen for Spring Break, but that determination will come as soon as possible.
South Lake Tahoe and all other El Dorado County schools to close starting Monday

The decision was made for the safety and wellness of students, families, and school personnel due to the current threat of the world-wide coronavirus COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in El Dorado County.
Coronavirus concerns change LTCC physical education classes and gym use

They sent out an email to staff and students, letting them know of closures but some do affect community members who use the gym and facilities.

Robbery at Wells Fargo in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 11:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is looking for the person who robbed the Wells Fargo Bank inside Raley's at Stateline on Saturday.
SLTPD responded to the call of a robbery at 11:02 a.m. on March 14. An unknown male had entered the store wearing a mask and headed to the bank on the east side. He demanded money from the teller and left with an undisclosed amount of cash and exited the store, heading toward Heavenly Village.
Winter Storm Warning now in place for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/13/2020 - 2:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the storm this weekend to a Winter Storm Warning with an increase in their previous forecast for snow accumulations and added winds. It begins Friday at 11:00 p.m. and goes until Monday at 11:00 a.m.
They are calling for heavy snow with total accumulations of 1-2 feet under 7,000 feet and 2-4 feet above. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph with ridge winds gusting to 100 mph in the Greater Lake Tahoe area.
The winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow.

South Lake Tahoe Senior and Recreation Centers closing in response to COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/13/2020 - 10:22amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All public activities at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center and Senior Center have been suspended for the time being. The City of South Lake Tahoe is closing those activities per recommendations from Governor Newson's response to the threat of coronavirus-COVID 19.
At this time, the County Meals on Wheels program that operates out of the Senior Center will continue but the senior's in-person lunch program will cease for the time being.

LTCC to cancel outside use of facilities and implements policies to limit COVID-19 spread

With that in mind, effective immediately LTCC is canceling all community events and outside group meetings planned for on campus to help reduce the chance of exposure and spread. Furthermore, LTCC is canceling all non-essential travel for LTCC employees. These are measures designed to reduce (but not eliminate) the risk of exponential community spread of COVID-19. These measures will be in effect until further notice.

Irvin was one of four final candidates for the position that met with the community on Monday, giving them a chance to do their own interviews, ask questions, and fill out a questionnaire on their choices.
South Lake Tahoe man arrested as suspect in local home burglaries
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/12/2020 - 8:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A local man has been arrested as a suspect in two residential burglaries in the 1100 block of Fairway Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
At 6:40 a.m. on March 9, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was contacted by a citizen who called 911 after hearing glass breaking from a neighbor's house. The caller's husband walked outside and said he saw a suspect walking away from the area. When the suspect was confronted by the husband, he fled on foot. Officers found only broken glass and no entry was made.
LTUSD asks students and staff to self-quarantine if returning from any COVID-19 infected area

Effective Monday, March 9, 2020, all students and staff returning from travel out-of-the-country or from COVID-19 infected areas in California or other areas of the United States are strongly recommended to self-quarantine in their home for 14 consecutive days beginning the date of their return to South Lake Tahoe.
Knights of Columbus to hold annual St. Patrick's Day dinner - Canceled
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/11/2020 - 10:24pmTHIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. The Knights of Columbus at Saint Theresa Church in South Lake Tahoe are preparing for their annual Saint Patrick's dinner to be held on Sunday, March 15.
The dinner will be a traditional corned beef and cabbage meal with potatoes, carrots, Irish soda bread and plenty of desserts. It will run from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the church's Grace Hall, located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
High Wind and Winter Storm Watches in place for Lake Tahoe

A significant looking late-season winter storm on the horizon starting late Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS)in reno.
South Lake Tahoe plastic bag ban to meet state regulations

The ban was to apply to all other retail outlets after one year, but that ban was delayed by the City Council at that time and then later amended to remove that portion.

Series of earthquakes north of Truckee

According to the University of Nevada Seismological, the following seven earthquakes were recorded from .6 to 3.9 magnitudes:
6:17 p.m. - Magnitude: 3.9 - 3.8 mi ENE of Independence Lake
6:27 p.m. - Magnitude: 1.2 - 4.1 mi ENE of Independence Lake
6:31 p.m. - Magnitude: 2.1 - 3.9 mi ENE of Independence Lake
6:48 p.m. - Magnitude: 0.6 - 3.8 mi NE of Independence Lake

Three arrested in South Lake Tahoe on gun and theft charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/10/2020 - 9:58pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three local residents were arrested on March 9 on various gun and theft charges after being found asleep in a vehicle on the grounds of Lake Tahoe Christian Fellowship.
At approximately 7:10 a.m., an alert officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) located a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the church located at 3580 Blackwood Avenue. The vehicle was occupied by two men and a woman, all who appeared to be sleeping.

Depending on how likely the area is to respond online, households will receive either an invitation encouraging them to respond online, by phone or on a paper questionnaire.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The annual Tahoe Chamber Business EXPO will be held on Friday, May 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Harrah's Tahoe. It was originally scheduled for March 27 but postponed due to coronavirus concerns.
CAPP Fund created to help South Lake Tahoe high school students with college application costs
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/09/2020 - 3:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new nonprofit organization based on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe has been formed to help high school seniors apply for colleges by picking up the application fees.
The CAPP Fund was opened in 2020 with a goal of increasing access to higher education by helping high school seniors at both South Tahoe High School and George Whittell High School with the costs of a four-year college application. Each application costs between $60 and $100 and the costs can add up when seeking the college(s) of their choice.
Pink Heavenly event canceled to limit chance of spread of coronavirus COVID-19
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/09/2020 - 2:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pink Heavenly, the annual fundraising event at Heavenly Mountain Resort to raise funds for Barton Health's cancer support services, has been canceled.
Originally planned for March 21, 2020, organizers with the Barton Foundation canceled the event to "protect community members, employees and care providers in the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19."
Slightly Stoopid announced for Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series

Supporting the headliners are the popular alt/reggae-rock band Pepper, the American/Hawaiian reggae band from Orange County, Common Kings, and legendary Jamaican reggae singer (and former member of Black Uhuru) Don Carlos. The lineup is full of great reggae and reggae-fusion music.
