SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Historical Society for the inaugural Festival of Winter Lights Friday, December 10 through Sunday, December 12.

The middle of South Lake Tahoe will be turned into an outdoor winter wonderland with beautiful lights, an outdoor market, and a full list of fun activities for all ages.

Stormwater monitoring following the Caldor Fire was positive, but more monitoring needed

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - On October 24th, during the storm driven by an atmospheric river, the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s staff and Pipe Keepers citizen scientist volunteers collected stormwater samples, made qualitative visual observations, and took quantitative measurements of water quality indicators, including turbidity. Participants monitored stormwater at 25 sites, including 16 stormwater pipes and 8 stream sites on Tahoe’s south shore that drain areas burned by the Caldor Fire.

LTBMU lifts Caldor Fire closure orders, repair begins on miles of damaged trails

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) lifted the Caldor Fire closure orders this week and people are now starting to access the backcountry trails.

LTBMU staff have mitigated immediate hazard trees along roads and trails within the Caldor Fire area, but the public should be aware that many hazards still exist including fire-weakened trees and smoldering pockets of fuel. The LTBMU recommends that anyone accessing the Caldor Fire area exercise caution as hazards will continue to be present over the next five to ten years.

Beaver Moon lunar eclipse at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you were awake overnight, catching a look at the lunar eclipse, you know it was windy, cold, and cloudy, but that didn't stop those wanting a look at the longest nearly-total eclipse in 580 years.

One of those awake was South Lake Tahoe resident John Gomez who shared this photo. This is a composite photo of the eclipse last night, which means it is a photo of the moon merged with a wide-angle shot of the sky.

Christmas Tree Lane through South Lake Tahoe to raise funds for Live Violence Free

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Enjoy Christmas Tree Lane this holiday season. There will be a fun "parade of trees" hosted by 13 South Lake Tahoe businesses during a new fundraising event for Live Violence Free.

At each of the businesses, there will be decorated trees available for viewing between November 26 - December 17, 2021. The trees will then be given away to lucky winners entering the contest and donating all day on the 17th.

Free coffee at Cuppa Tahoe for local first responders from Guild Mortgage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Guild Mortgage of Minden is giving thanks to local first responders from El Dorado County for protecting the community. They are all invited to stop by Cuppa Tahoe in uniform and receive a free coffee from November 22-28, 2021.

The invitation includes Lake Valley Fire, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, South Lake Tahoe Police and Fire and they are all invited to enjoy a 12-ounce coffee.

Cuppa Tahoe is located at The Crossing at Tahoe Valley, 2054 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. They are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.

Vahalla Holiday Faire starts Friday in South Lake Tahoe

For 25 years, Valhalla Tahoe has hosted an annual Holiday Faire at the Heller Estate for the enjoyment of the community. Valhalla Tahoe and its volunteers celebrate the season by decking the Grand Hall for everyone's enjoyment. This year, it will be held November 19-21.

A favorite tradition for many families, you can get a glimpse of Tahoe's past while shopping for hand-made crafts, taking free photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and enjoying local entertainment and holiday libations.

Masks will be required while indoors at this event.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues speaker series on Lake Tahoe, Kit Carson and Eastern Sierra

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley will be offering free interpretive programs (and a few Christmas-oriented programs as well) every weekend through the middle of February.

The Eastern Sierra speaker series continues with two more campfire interpretive programs on Saturday and Sunday, November 20 and 21.

On Saturday, November 20 at 4:00 p.m., join them for “Reflections of Lake Tahoe.” Local historian David Woodruff takes a look back at the many people and events that have helped shape Lake Tahoe over the past 160 years and examines the unsuccessful efforts to create a Lake Tahoe National Park.

Soroptimist of South Lake Tahoe invite community to Winter Welcome holiday party

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – Tips from El Dorado County Public Health on how residents and visitors can stay safe and healthy over the holidays.

“The change in season and upcoming holidays prompt gatherings and behaviors that increase many health and safety risks,” said El Dorado County Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams. “Taking simple preventive measures can reduce the chances of the holidays being ruined by things like improperly cooked turkeys, drunk driving, or respiratory infections, and can also ensure everyone stays safe.”

Details released on fatal Douglas County chase and crash

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A 43-year-old man, John David Schulze, has been identified as the man who died in Tuesday's pursuit and crash in Douglas County.

On November 16, 2021, at 4:45 p.m., a Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy was involved in a vehicular pursuit in the Gardnerville Ranchos. The suspect fleeing from the deputy was Blake Edward Thacker, a 31-year-old male who was wanted by the State of Oregon for a felony parole violation.

Christmas Tree arrives at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the fifth consecutive year, a tree was cut down and transported to the Heavenly Village for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting celebration.

Early Tuesday morning, Ken Curtzwiler of K & K Services, Ed Cook Crane Services, and Haen Construction orchestrated the cutting of the large tree in South Lake Tahoe and transportation to its final destination.

Christmas Tree permits sell out in Lake Tahoe in 75 minutes - Truckee still has some available

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 1,500 Christmas Tree permits offered this year by the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) were sold out by 9:15 a.m., just 75 minutes after officially going on sale.

The permits have always been popular, and lines were even seen some years winding around the LTBMU offices in South Lake Tahoe. Since the permit purchases went online through the Recreation.Gov website, sales have been brisk.

The Eldorado National Forest permits sold out quickly as well.

Lake Tahoe prescribed fire operations to resume after Thanksgiving

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will resume fall prescribed fire operations after the Thanksgiving holiday and will continue burning throughout much of the fall and winter season, conditions and weather permitting. Prescribed fires help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Deadly crash in Douglas County after suspect leaves path of destruction

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A parole absconder from Oregon fled from deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) on Tuesday afternoon, crashing into several vehicles before being involved in a deadly crash.

NHP identifies truck and trailer owners in south Carson City fatal crash, more charges added

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the truck owner and trailer owner and has added more charges to the driver involved in the Nov. 9 multi-vehicle crash that killed a Dayton couple and injured several others at the junction of I-580, South Carson Street, and Highway 50.

The owners of the 2017 Ford F-350 truck are Xiomara Leyva and Alfredo Xiomara Leyva, both listed from Florida. The trailer owner, also out of Florida, is listed as Maria Cruz-Mirete, according to NHP.

New trustee boundaries for LTUSD to be voted on Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has to give their new district boundary maps to the state before the end of the year, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has a bit longer.

Every ten years after the federal census, trustee lines for school districts must also be adjusted to ensure that each area contains the same number of
residents.

Heavenly and Northstar push back opening dates due to warm weather

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a delay to opening for both Heavenly and Northstar resorts due to recent warm temperatures throughout the region. They had both planned on opening on Friday, November 19.

The resorts will monitor conditions and provide an update on a new target opening date early next week.

Tahoe Douglas Fire has new explosive tracking dog, K9 Tracker

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - A new team member has been added to Tahoe Douglas Fire, Tracker the EOD K9. The Hungarian Vizala is a member of the department's Explosive Ordinance Disposal team.

City Council to vote on Riverside Avenue affordable housing project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council will consider transferring three lots on Riverside Avenue to the St. Joseph Community Land Trust for one dollar so the non-profit can develop three single-family moderate-income affordable housing during a public hearing at its meeting Tuesday night.

The parcels are located at 3141 Riverside Avenue and are currently undeveloped and used for off-street parking by many in the Al Tahoe area.

Lake Valley Firefighters Foundation thanks the community, uses donations to support others

The Lake Valley Firefighters Foundation would like to thank the community, the 646 individuals who donated to their Community Relief Fund, and the "Angel of Tahoe" Ms. Lisa Maloff, Ricky Reich, and the Upper Montgomery Estates neighborhood for donations to the foundation.

Together, $140,000 was raised.

The Foundation is also expressing its gratitude for the hundreds of food and delicious treat donations from families and local caterers.

Wind, rain and chance of snow in the Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a windy start to the week, and cooler weather returns by Tuesday with another system expected to roll into the Sierra Thursday, bringing increased chances for stronger winds and precipitation.

There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe from 9:00 a.m. to midnight Monday. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph are expected with waves 1 to 3 feet. Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Deadlines closing in on new boundaries for supervisors, congress, senate and assembly districts

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Every ten years the country undergoes a census count, the results of which are used for many different things from funding to boundaries of elected officials.

Ever since the count results were released, districts and states have been revamping boundaries based on where the population now resides. There have been major shifts in populations, resulting in California losing one seat in the House of Representatives, and boundaries being recalculated for the Assembly, Senate, Congress, and Board of Equalization.

Lake Tahoe Chanukah celebration to include carved ice menorah at Ski Run Marina

Lake Tahoe’s Chanukah celebrations will receive a significant boost this year with the carving and lighting of a large Ice Menorah at the Ski Run Marina. A sculptor will use a chainsaw and carving tools to carve blocks of ice into a four-foot ice menorah.

Chanukah, The Festival of Lights- for many brings back fond memories of childhood years and serves to renew our sense of identity. The Chanukah lights provide us with warmth, joy, strength, and inspiration. Such is the purpose of a community-wide celebration to be held at the Ski Run Marina.

Annual report on most dangerous roads for driver-wildlife conflict

The annual ‘roadkill’ report identifies hot spots and paths forward, from conflict to solutions for California wildlife and drivers.

In the past five years, collisions between wildlife and vehicles cost California at least $1 billion and potentially up to $2 billion, according to estimates in an annual report by the Road Ecology Center at the University of California, Davis.
