After I moved to Tahoe in 1983, the workforce significantly grew and the number of restaurants and bars in the region more than doubled. There are two basic truths that will never change: Tahoe is a second home market and a major tourist destination. With a finite number of homes at Lake Tahoe, affordable housing and workforce housing will always be a challenge.

An amazing group of young members of the South Tahoe Middle School’s Club Live were Adopt A Day of Nourishment volunteers for Bread & Broth’s (B&B) Monday Meal on May 13, 2024. “Volunteering at a B&B meal was an opportunity I’m glad I didn’t miss,” said Jimmy McKaughan. “I enjoyed seeing and meeting all of the different people in this community and being able to know you helped,” she added.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Memorial Day weekend marks South Lake Brewing Company's 7th anniversary, and they’re celebrating all day on Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26.

The party will start at 12 p.m. on Saturday at the Brewery with the release of new anniversary beers, live music by Sierra Gypsies and Miranda Rae Love, slushies on tap, food from Philly Phil's and Slice of Sierra Pizza, face painting, and specialty merchandise for sale.

California State Parks is honoring the service of veterans, and active and reserve military members, by offering free admission to 143 participating state park units on Memorial Day – Monday, May 27, 2024. The list of participating park units can be found at parks.ca.gov/MemorialDay2024.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is hosting its annual Kid's Fishing Derby at Sawmill Pond on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. which is located on the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Sawmill Rd. in South Lake Tahoe. This event is free and open to children 14 years old and younger.

Fishing tackle and bait will be available for those without their own. Receive expert guidance from Tahoe Fly Fishing.

There will be a free fish cleaning table.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the annexation of the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District into the North Tahoe Fire Protection District, getting all parties closer to the final step in a lengthy process.

The County's Ad Hoc Annexation Committee along with the Chief Administrative Officer's office both made the recommendation to dissolve Meeks Bay Fire and annex the district to North Tahoe Fire.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office (DA) and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) tried for six years to have Ricardo Serrano Perez extradited to Nevada after the sexual assault of a minor. They were successful on October 9, 2023, and today Serrano Perez was sentenced to 20 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is offering the free driver safety class, Start Smart, on Wednesday, May 29 at 6 p.m. The course is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. The program was created in an effort to preemptively reduce the incidence of teen injuries and deaths resulting from motor vehicle collisions.

Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) is holding their popular Cram-a-Cruiser food drive at South Lake Tahoe’s Grocery Outlet on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is scheduled to begin mechanical forest thinning this week on approximately 75 acres located in two locations, one near High Meadows Trail and one near Cascade Properties in South Lake Tahoe. The Lake Valley Mechanical Contract is part of the South Shore Hazardous Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project intended to reduce the risk of severe wildfires near neighborhoods and create healthier forests in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

There will be a storytime and book signing of a new local book, Tahoe 123, a fun animal counting adventure around Lake Tahoe. It will be held Village Toys, South Lake, CA.

This new local children's board book is the companion book to Good Night Tahoe, our best-selling book about the Reno/Carson City/Tahoe region’s places, animals, and activities. In this new adventure, Beary and his friend, Cheeky, count some of the wonderful sights and experiences of Tahoe. Of course, it is full of fantasy and fun for the entire family. You can count on it.

Incline Meadow Restoration Project

So, while most people think of grilling a juicy steak, maybe some bratwurst or a burger or two, have you ever considered trying a grilled cauliflower steak?

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - For the last several months, El Dorado County Supervisor Brooke Laine has coordinated a 13-member advisory group of locals to evaluate the current Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation and find solutions for any problems that have occurred since its implementation. All viewpoints on VHRs were represented on the advisory group, including those against and for VHRs, and those in the industry.

The Supervisors met in South Lake Tahoe for its weekly meeting on Tuesday, with VHRs one of the Tahoe Basin-focused agenda items.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Education Foundation (LTEF) is inviting the community to their Celebration of Education event at Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Thursday, May 16 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Also, be inspired by Ryan Wallace of the documentary Momentum as he gives the LTEF inaugural 'Ed Talk,' and celebrates this year's Hall of Distinction honorees: Grant Carter, Susan Baker, Ruth Rich, Austin Angell, and Wendy David.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next scheduled meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council on May 21 has been canceled due to a lack of an in-jurisdiction quorum. In order for remote participation by council members, three of the five would have to be in the council chambers. In the case of May 21, only two would have been.

The next council meeting will be held on June 4 at 9 a.m. Agenda items originally scheduled for May 21 will be moved to that date.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The women of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) have launched their online auction, the top fundraiser for the group celebrating over 47 years of serving the local community.

The auction is full of over 300 items to bid on, from massages and gifts to unique opportunities. All bids will be accepted until 5 p.m. on May 24 when the auction closes.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Plan received a 2024 Project Excellence Award from the Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP) during the National Outdoor Recreation Conference held in Stateline last week. The award recognizes the dedication and innovation of individuals and organizations in advancing the outdoor recreation profession while upholding SORP's values of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; sustainable recreation; people; community; collaboration; and skill development.

Coordinated by Realtor Ellen Camacho, Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty has hosted four Adopt A Day of Nourishments (AAD) sponsorships annually for several years. The most current sponsorship meal was held on Monday, May 6, and once again Sierra Sotheby’s sent an excellent volunteer crew to participate in the evening meal service.

In addition to Ellen Camacho, the Sierra Sotheby’s sponsorship AAD crew included returning volunteers Demian Black and Haily Mitchell, and Angie Challenor, who was participating in AAD for the first time.
