WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) announced legislation to expand access to nature for Americans, improve the visitor reservation process and experience on federal lands, including national parks, and enhance fee transparency. The Review and Evaluation of Strategies for Equal Reservations for Visitor Experiences (RESERVE) Federal Land Act received a hearing today in the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (ENR).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Learn everything you need to know about the new South Tahoe Refuse garbage tote program at the next program offered by the South Lake Tahoe Library on June 25 at 5:30 p.m.

Catherine Howells from South Tahoe Refuse will be at the library to give an overview of the plan to transition to the new 3-cart system of collecting garbage, recycling, and yard waste.

She'll explain the new state law that was the impetus for South Tahoe Refuse to make the transition.

Day-use reservations planned for Sand Harbor State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Division of State Parks has announced they will roll out a pilot day-use reservation parking system at Sand Harbor State Park in mid-August before moving to a permanent system in 2025.

This new system aims to reduce traffic congestion on Highway 28, improve trip planning, and alleviate overcrowding at this beloved Lake Tahoe destination in Incline Village.

Community members and visitors are invited to join the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion at the Flag Day ceremony to properly dispose of American flags that are no longer serviceable.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.

El Dorado County Supervisors unanimously approve $1B budget

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During their Tuesday meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Recommended Budget of $1.03 billion to fund the County’s programs and services for the coming year.

The budget is $74 million, seven percent less than last year’s adopted budget of $1.1 billion, and reflects all governmental funds, including special revenue funds, and excludes special districts and proprietary funds. $416 million of that amount is the County’s general fund which funds public safety and general government services.

South Tahoe High School seniors celebrate graduation at their elementary schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Buses left South Tahoe High School (STHS) Monday morning with a big mission to accomplish - delivering the graduating seniors back to where their education began in South Lake Tahoe.

This was the inaugural senior walk during graduation week in South Lake Tahoe, walking the halls in their cap and gown before doing the same across the STHS football field.

One by one, the seniors filed out of the buses onto the school grounds, greeted by cheers from the students and teachers at those elementary schools.

Emergency response to possible gas leak near South Tahoe High Stadium

UPDATE: The gas leak situation has been resolved near the South Tahoe High Stadium, and it is now safe. All first responders have been released.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a possible gas leak at the old Mt. Tallac High School next to the South Tahoe High School stadium. Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has evacuated the area. Emergency responders are on site and waiting for Southwest Gas to have the gas shut off.

Appleseed Academy now occupies the building with Mt. Tallac High moving to their new location at the Al Tahoe Education site.

Douglas County juveniles arrested for possession of stolen firearms and other charges

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Three juvenile suspects were arrested by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) on Monday morning. Law enforcement believes the three, ages 14, 15, and 17, committed a rash of vehicle burglaries in the Gardnerville Ranchos area during the early morning hours of Sunday, May 26.

The 17-year-old male was arrested at Douglas High School and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Facility for burglary, grand larceny of a firearm, unlawful sale of a firearm, and being a juvenile in possession of a firearm.

Participatory budgeting is a democratic process that allows residents to decide how to spend part of a public budget. It provides an opportunity for citizens to engage directly in budget decision-making, prioritize community needs, and collaborate with local government to implement solutions.

WWII Veteran John J. Cristando ~ March 16, 1926 - June 3, 2024

A well-loved fixture in South Lake Tahoe for the last 58 years, John J. Cristando, sadly passed away on Monday, June 3 at the age of 98. A man who was very proud of being in the European Theater in World War II, John had originally planned on being in France for the 80th-anniversary ceremony of D-Day in Normandy after he was chosen to attend, but health kept him at Lake Tahoe.

Community Clean Up Day Saturday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long-awaited annual cleanup day in South Lake Tahoe has been scheduled for Saturday, June 8. Clean Tahoe will be holding the day-long event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fondly known as $5 Dump Day, dispose of unwanted items for just $5 per carload. Residential loads only. Nevada residents are charged $10 per load as are pick-up trucks and trailers. UHauls and oversized trucks are priced by size.

Pioneer Trail understory burn scheduled for June 9-11

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – In coordination with the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), is scheduled to conduct an understory prescribed fire on approximately 46 acres near South Lake Tahoe beginning Sunday, June 9, 2024, and continuing through Tuesday, June 11.

If conditions and weather are favorable, the burn will take place on the southeast side of Pioneer Trail between Susquehana Drive and Golden Bear Trail.

Judge Eddie T. Keller ~ June 6, 1941 - May 4, 2024

When Judge Eddie T. Keller died unexpectedly on May 4, 2024, he left behind volumes of memories and a treasure trove full of family, friends, and colleagues. A legend in legal circles, the former Assistant Presiding Judge Keller served in the courts on both the east and west slopes of El Dorado County and for years in the California Attorney General's Office.

Retired Judge Suzanne Kingsbury said Keller was a man of great integrity and intellect. She said, "He helped improve access to the court system and the delivery of justice."

Douglas School Board controversies: Joey Gilbert tweeting during meetings, a trustee criticized for using 'r' slur

More controversies are coming out of the May 21 Douglas County School Board and this time one of the issues isn’t what’s happening at the meetings, but rather, what isn’t.

Attendees of the meetings have pointed out that the board’s attorney, Joey Gilbert, spends time on his phone during the school board meetings during which he is paid $325 an hour.

Gilbert is a fan of the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, with hundreds of tweets and re-tweets on his profile each month.

Travis and Jason Kelce headed to Lake Tahoe for American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Travis Kelce will be returning for his sixth consecutive appearance at the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe, and joining him for the first time is his brother, Jason Kelce.

Knight Monsters release 2024 schedule - Home opener at Tahoe Ice Arena October 24

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters have announced the team’s complete 2024-2025 game schedule for their upcoming Inaugural Season set to begin in October.

The Knight Monsters will play a 72-game regular season schedule (36 home, 36 away). The team will play a family-friendly home schedule comprised of ten Friday games, 11, Saturday games, six Sunday afternoon contests, four Wednesday games, and five Thursday games.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A second community meeting for the proposed Alpine Estates in South Lake Tahoe is planned for Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in the South Lake Tahoe City Council Chambers.

Alpine Estates is planned for the area at the Y between The Crossing at Tahoe Valley and Tahoe Valley Pharmacy. One year ago the project was 70 units of achievable housing, with rent capped at 125 percent of the area median income.
