Prescribed fire operations are planned to continue this week on the east and south shores of Lake Tahoe.

The U.S. Forest Service, the Nevada Division of State Lands and the Nevada Division of Forestry will start the fire operations on Monday, May 2, weather permitting.

South Shore: Near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek, and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.

With the computer science field many dominated by men as well as all careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) field, Whittell High School senior Kelsey Kjer is looking to change that.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County is in need of eight to ten volunteers in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday May 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to help with their mobile food pantry.

Once a month, the food bank stops in South Lake Tahoe to distribute emergency supplemental groceries to those who need it most. Volunteers will be assisting in handing out food and signing people in. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency presented Lake Spirit Awards to four people who possess a strong personal commitment to preserving Lake Tahoe at today’s Governing Board meeting.

The Lake Spirit Awards honor people making real progress at restoring Lake Tahoe. Created in 2011, the awards are a way to recognize those individuals whose passion for Tahoe results in progress and environmental improvements.

Sierra Nevada College on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has been awarded a five year grant to develop infrastructure for health-related research and STEM education in the state of Nevada. The National Institutes of Health program grant was given jointly also to the University of Nevada, Reno; UNLV, College of Southern Nevada; Great Basin College; Nevada State College; University of Nevada School of Medicine; Western Nevada College; and Truckee Meadows Community College.

The City of South Lake Tahoe’s Parks and Recreation Commission will be presenting a proclamation to the Bijou Bike Park Association at the next City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 3 at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers located at 1901 Airport Rd. The Association is being recognized for their work in helping to plan and build the Bijou Bike Park.

That is what South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Donna Kingman said she'll be doing after hanging up her shield after 29 years of working in the community. Her official last day is April 30, but Thursday was her last shift working in uniform.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest in a vehicle burglary in a parking lot at Harvey's Casino.

Between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. on March 24 a locked vehicle was burglarized. The suspect took numerous credit cards and personal items. Video surveillance captured an alleged suspect exiting a lcoal business where he attempted to use one of the stolen credit cards.

A 32-year-old Joshua Albericci of Gardnerville has been arrested on multiple charges stemming from his alledged assault and kidnapping of his 29-year-old wife.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of a domestic dispute in the Gardnerville Ranchos area of the county on April 27, 2016 at 10:45 a.m. When they arrived at the home in the 800 block of Short Court, they learned that the victim had fled to a neighbor's home after being physically assaulted by her husband.

The U.S. Forest Service and California Tahoe Conservancy will be finishing their fourth and final year of creating a new channel for the Upper Truckee River near the South Lake Tahoe airport. To accomplish their final tasks, the meadow and river will be closed to the public for much of the summer in order to divert the water into the new channel, relocate fish and mussels, and finish up vegetation projects.

During their April 19 meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s Safe Routes to School Master Plan. With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.

Sunday night's honey oil lab explosion in a South Lake Tahoe home could have been much, much worse. Neighboring homes could have burned, people could have died.

The monthly meeting of the Tahoe Paradise Resort Improvement District will be on Thursday, April 28 at the park's meeting room from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Agenda items include both a dog ordinance and dog rules around the playground, a new wedding calendar and website improvements, local pricing for use of facilities, beach improvements, and noise at the park. Bylaws, park budget and park maintenance are also included on the agenda.

The public is invited to attend.

The South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (a non-profit public benefit agency) will hold its 13th annual Cinco de Mayo festival at Heavenly’s California Lodge on Friday, May 6 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. An all-you-can-eat Mexican buffet, authentic live music, folkloric dancers, children’s activities, a no-host beer and wine bar and tequila tasting will be featured at the event.

Tickets are on sale at the center for $20 in advance. They will be $25 at the door. Children 6 to 12 years old will be admitted for $10 and children younger than 5 are admitted free.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) would like to thank the many community members and volunteers who helped in the cleanup and closing of the South Lake Tahoe Warm Room in early April. The Warm Room was open from December 18 through April 1 and provided the first overnight homeless services in the Tahoe Region.

The South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition is collaborating with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office on the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in front of Lira's Supermarket in Meyers. Over the last two events on the South Shore, 100 pounds of unwanted prescription medication turned in to authorities.
