Women of the Moose in SLT help local homeless youth

A community group effort led by the Women of the Moose (WOTM) Chapter 408 in South Lake Tahoe is helping the homeless youth of the community
WOTM help out with the kids who are part of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's McKinney Vento program. LTUSD receives an annual allocation of about $1,000 to purchase school supplies and help with bus transportation for its approximately 250 homeless students.

After Sunday, the National Weather Service is forecasting a dry week for South Lake Tahoe with no rain and warming temperatures.
Here is their forecast:
Monday - Mostly sunny, with a high near 63. West wind 5 to 10 mph.
Monday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 33. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the evening.
Tuesday - Sunny, with a high near 61. East wind around 5 mph.
Tuesday Night - Mostly clear, with a low around 33. East wind around 5 mph.
Wednesday - Sunny, with a high near 65.

Thanks to the U.S. Forest Service employees from the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, the Bread & Broth diners on Monday night May 2nd enjoyed a festive Mexican dinner at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall. With funds from the Forest Service employee association’s Wellness, Recreation and Morale fund, the B&B cooks prepared beef tacos, Mexican black beans and Spanish rice to celebrate the upcoming Cino de Mayo holiday.

Howard Bittner - March 7, 1950 to April 17, 2016

Howard Bittner, a longtime South Lake Tahoe resident and chiropractor died April 17, 2016 after fighting a lengthy illness. He was 66.
Howard had been struggling with Pemphigus Vulgaris, an autoimmune disease, for the last 18 months.
Howard Henry Bittner was born on March 7, 1950, in Akron, Ohio. After growing up in Arizona and California, he attended Santa Barbara Community College before enlisting in the Navy. Howard graduated with honors from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Iowa in 1980.
Bay Area couple wins lawsuit against TRPA, can build in Angora Fire area

In June, 2007, the Angora Fire swept through a neighborhood, taking with it 242 homes and 3.100 acres of trees and shrubs, forcing people to either rebuild or sell.

About ten Unity at the Lake (UATL) members are regular Bread & Broth volunteers who serve and cook at the Monday evening meals, help with the Bread & Broth 4 Kids Thursday bag packing and serve on B&B’s board. As an all volunteer, non-profit organization, Bread & Broth truly appreciates the support that we have received from UATL since the program’s inception over 26 years ago.
South Lake Tahoe police work to keep area bike trails safe

Even though the bike paths through South Lake Tahoe are relatively safe, those using them should exercise caution at all times and be aware of their surroundings, especially when going by areas of thick brush and low lighting.
After the May 4, 2016 stabbing of two men on the isolated section of bike trail behind Meeks Lumber, SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams offered that advice for the bikers and walkers that utilize the trails.

The inaugural OMG Fun Run will be held in Meyers on Sunday, May 22, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. OMG stands for "Old Meyers Grade," and that is where the course will take participants, over the 2.6 mile round-trip road which at one time took cars up Echo Summit.

Mickey George, a member of the Whittell High School class of 2012, helped the California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) Supermileage Team recently achieve high scores at the Shell Oil Eco-Marathon in Detroit.
The three-day event scores a car's performance based on energy efficiency, not speed. George served as the team's manufacturing lead.
Achieving 1,215 miles per gallon, Cal Poly's gasoline-fueled prototype vehicle was the top-scoring American entry and placed third overall at the 10th annual competition.
Woman rescued from cliffs above Emerald Bay

An Incline Village woman was rescued from the cliffs above Vikingsholm in Emerald Bay on Thursday after she slipped while climbing down the mountain.
Jane Rylander had been climbing in the steep cliff bands from Vikingsholm parking lot down towards the main castle. She slipped and slid down the embankment becoming stuck on the cliff band. She was not injured but could not climb up or down and was in the need of rescue.

The Tahoe Bike Challenge runs from June 1 to June 14 in South Lake Tahoe. This is a time the community celebrates getting out of their cars and using a bike to get to work, play and school.
Thousands of miles were logged during the last Tahoe Bike Challenge by school kids, city and county workers, employees at local agencies and your neighbors as they ran errands, got to work, and enjoyed free time.

This week's pet of the week is Bear, a very handsome two-year-old German Shepard-Malamute mix. He is a lovely dog and is not happy being stuck in a cage at the shelter.
Bear would make a wonderful pet, he gets along with children and learns quickly.

Lake Tahoe’s two regional bi-state agencies for transportation, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD), are inviting the public to attend interactive open houses this month to learn more about draft proposals to improve Tahoe’s highway corridors and share their ideas and input.
The open houses are Tuesday, May 17 at the North Tahoe Events Center in Kings Beach, and Tuesday, May 24 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe. Both are from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Two South Lake Tahoe men were stabbed on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 on the bike path behind Meek's Lumber by two unknown assailants who have not yet been apprehended.

Marchesseau, originally from Montana, has lived in the Lake Tahoe region for more than 15 years and has worked in local interior design and real estate industries for more than a decade. Upper Truckee Marsh closed to dogs to protect mating endangered species

It's time again for the Upper Truckee Marsh to be closed to dogs in order to protect the critical breeding habitat for special, threatened and endangered species such as the Willow Flycatcher.
The marsh area will be closed through July 31, 2016. Leashed dogs may once again travel through the the Upper Truckee Marsh starting August 1.
The California Tahoe Conservancy-owned Cove East property, west of the river and marsh, remains open for year-round, leashed dog access.
The El Dorado County Sheriff enforces county and city ordinances and Conservancy staff monitors for compliance.
Fundraiser for couple who lost home in South Lake Tahoe fire

The Benko Art Gallery in South Lake Tahoe is hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, May 7 for Grant and Cecelia Nobleman, the young couple who lost their home, animals and belongings in a fire on Aspen Avenue April 21. The benefit will be from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
There will be a $5 donation at the door, and a silent auction from various artists in the area who have donated art work. All proceeds will directly support the Nobleman’s loss. Live music and art auction too!
Gov. Brown signs bill to raise smoking age to 21: Vaping, chewing, dipping included

Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday enacted California’s most significant new tobacco regulations in decades, signing laws that will place tight restrictions on use of the increasingly popular e-cigarette and make California the second state to raise its smoking age to 21.
Brown signed five closely-watched bills, which will also expand smoking restrictions in the workplace and on school properties.
But he vetoed one measure that would have allowed cities and counties to impose local taxes on tobacco products.
Valhalla Boathouse Theatre celebrates 20 years in South Lake Tahoe

It once housed The Shiek, a boat named in honor of Rudolf Valentino, friend and frequent guest to the Pope Estate in South Lake Tahoe. The Shiek was the biggest and fastest boat of its time on Lake Tahoe.
In the late 1800's it housed the boats of William Tevis who owned the 75 acre sprawling estate along the South Shore.

Suspected pipe bomb found in South Lake Tahoe turns out to be hoax

10:35 a.m. update: The "all clear" is about to be given at the El Dorado County Government Center. The bomb has been considered a hoax device meant to cause the major response by law enforcement that it did, according to SLTPD Chief Brian Uhler. Evidence is being gathered and roads will soon reopen.
At approximately 6:35 a.m. this morning, a groundskeeper working at the El Dorado County Courthouse located at 1354 Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe noticed a suspicious device in front of the courthouse.

In just over one hour, the South Lake Tahoe City Council finished up all of their business for the day, but not all that was on the agenda.
City Council members Hal Cole and Tom Davis were both missing from the May 3 meeting, Davis due to a planned County Supervisor luncheon and Cole due to illness.

Report of gunshots brings out law enforcement to Meyers

El Dorado County Central Dispatch received a call about gunshots heard in the Meyers area on Monday, May 2 at 9:53 p.m. The caller, a passerby in the area of South Upper Truckee and the Old Meyers Grade said they heard 12-15 gunshots.
A Sheriff deputy responded at 10:08 p.m. and didn't hear or see any suspicious activity in the area.
A check of the area did not reveal anything of concern. No further shots were reported but the deputy remained in the area for an extended period of time just to make sure.
16th annual Lake Tahoe snapshot day to show tributary stream health

Over one hundred community members will gather on May 14 as the League to Save Lake Tahoe organizes the year’s largest single-day, hands-on citizens science effort to capture a snapshot of the water quality health of South Shore streams feeding into Lake Tahoe.
“By participating in the 16th annual Snapshot Day, volunteers are building on years of data gathered in these streams to provide valuable data information we can use to help protect Lake Tahoe,” said Jesse Patterson, deputy director for the League to Save Lake Tahoe.
Bijou Bike Park Association receives proclamation at City Council meeting

The Bijou Bike Park Association was recognized during Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting with a proclamation honoring their successful creation of the bike park on Al Tahoe Blvd.
"I didn't know this was going to be so successful so quickly," said Amy Fish, an active member of the association. "Our kids can now ride side by side with world class GoPro cyclists at the park."
Amy accepted the award for her husband Ben who was out of town on business. He is the President of both Bijou Bike Park and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Associations
Community invited to LTCC’s annual student art exhibit

The community is invited to Lake Tahoe Community College’s Annual Student Art Exhibition opening reception on Sunday, May 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Commons, located in the Main Building on campus. An awards ceremony honoring the winners starts at 3:30 p.m. There will be approximately 400 works of student art on display, ranging from digital art to printmaking and sculpture. All of the artwork displayed represents student production over the past year. Much of the work reflects the Art Department’s curriculum, but also includes work created independently by LTCC students.

5/4/16 11:00 a.m. update: The fire that swept through a Tahoe Keys condo complext on Tuesday caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Seven of the units suffered significant damage and a few other units in the surrounding condominiums have had some water and/or smoke damage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the 1:48 p.m. 911 call, and the fire was contained at approximately 4:10 p.m. Fire fighting personnel remained on the scene until 9:00 p.m.

Consequences of Lake Tahoe Basin tree mortality

Prolonged drought periods often result in forest tree mortality, but this death varies across the Lake Tahoe Basin. The causes of tree mortality range from native bark beetles, forest pathogens (both native and invasive), stressors such as drought and salt stress, as well as historical land-use.
Six area meadows tapped to be restored by Forest Service

Six meadows in the southern portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin will be restored using a combination of tree removal, prescribed fire, stream channel repair, planting vegetation and rerouting trails starting in Spring 2017.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) made the announcement today of what is being called the Restoration of Fire Adapted Ecosystems Project.
Get free screening during Posture Awareness Month

There are negative health complications that are a result of bad posture, so the month of May has been deemed "Posture Awareness Month."
In response to this focus, Dr. Joshua Welch of South Lake Tahoe is offering free posture screenings thru May, 2016 at Safe Haven Chiropractic. Included is a free report and exercises to reverse poor posture in young children and adults.
“Maintaining correct posture and correct alignment is one of the foundations to healthy living," said Welch. "It can reduce injuries, decrease flare-ups and allow athletes to maintain elite performance.”
Four cited for selling alcohol to minors

Four people were cited for selling alcohol to minors on April 29 during a compliance sting by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
During the operation, minors under the direct supervision of officers, attempted to purchase alcohol from ten retail licensees in the city limits.
40 percent of those businesses sold alcohol to the teen decoys. Clerks at Safeway Gas, Chevron Gas, Whiskey Dicks and Chevy's Restaurant were all cited and face a minimum fine of $250, and/or 24 to 32 hours of community service for a first violation.
City hires new Development Services Director

The City of South Lake Tahoe has hired a new Development Services Director to replace Shawna Brekke-Read, who left the position in December after a year on the job.
City Manager Nancy Kerry today announced the selection of Kevin Fabino for the position. Fabino will be leaving his job as the head of the City of Reedley's Planning, Building and Engineering Divisions and will start the new job in South Lake Tahoe later this month.
New community health nurse hired for Douglas County

Catherine "Cat" Fuller has been selected for the Community Health Nurse/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) position at the Douglas County Community Health Clinic.
After a nationwide recruitment, Carson City Health and Human Services along with Douglas County selected Fuller which included an interview process which began in February, 2016 and included a panel of nursing, social services, and administrative leadership from the Carson City and Douglas County Community Health and Social Services agencies.

Let the games begin, again! Dodgeball, table tennis, badminton, music, food, bounce house, science fair and more are all on tap for the 3rd annual Community Games on the Lake Tahoe Community College campus on Saturday, May 7 from noon to 4:00 p.m.
The LTCC Coyote athletes will train young soccer players and other kids activities include face painting and a scavenger hunt. But, its not all for kids, tournaments for adults will create a lot of excitement.

Mental Health Awareness Month kicks off on May 1 and the community is encouraged to participate in a 31-day challenge to honor not only their own mental health, but that of others.

May 6, 2016 - 7:30pm Give mom the gift of song this year and attend the Tahoe Choir and Lake Tahoe Community College Chorus concert, A Mother's Day Gift of Song. There are two opportunities to watch this special show over the weekend.
On Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m., they will perform in LTCC's Duke Theatre, and Sunday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Theresa Church located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe needs to be interesting and ready to give a total experience

There was once a time when having a beautiful lake, spectacular scenery and non-stop action and gambling was enough for the tourist to visit South Lake Tahoe and the South Shore.
This is no longer the case and the community needs to become future ready.
Carl Ribaudo, owner of Strategic Marketing Group, spoke at the Future Ready Tourism Forum at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on April 26, 2016.
While change is always tough Ribaudo said, South Lake Tahoe needs to be prepared as the tourist shifts from making a transaction when coming to Tahoe to wanting an experience.
