SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held a promotion ceremony in council chambers Thursday, recognizing staff who have been promoted.
Officer Brian Hannink was promoted to patrol sergeant, Sergeant Jeff Roberson was promoted to lieutenant, and Sergeant Scott Crivelli moved to detective sergeant.
Sierra snowpack at Phillips Station 109% of normal, 92% of normal statewide

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After epic snowstorms in December bringing above average snowfall, and a dry January, the snowpack was measured today at 109 percent of average at Phillips Station for February 1.
The Department of Water Resources (DWR) today conducted the second snow survey of the season at the Phillips Station location, west of Lake Tahoe.
Nevada's casinos once again have strong showing in monthly revenue report

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,150,169,585 for the month of November 2021, a gain of 68.23 percent over the same period in 2020. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casino's win was up 18.95 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $18,569,338, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report.
Last month's report also showed over $18M in gaming revenue on the South Shore and $1.32M for the state of Nevada.

COVID-19 daily cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - There have been 308 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 25,183. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive. Hospitalizations have been dropping both locally and across the state.
There are now 105.9 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

Lake Tahoe agencies continue widespread prescribed fire operations

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue widespread prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin, conditions and weather permitting. Operations are expected to continue throughout the winter season to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Over 5,200 acres treated by French Meadows partnership in third season of work

For the third consecutive year, partners of the French Meadows Forest Restoration Project have wrapped up another season of forest treatments in the Tahoe National Forest. Despite the challenges of an extremely dangerous fire season in 2021, the French Meadows Partnership safely treated roughly 1,000 acres using a combination of mastication, mechanical thinning, hand thinning and prescribed fires. A portion of this acreage is on private land owned by the American River Conservancy, which has independently raised funds and treated 1,345 acres over several years.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dry and mild conditions will prevail through Monday ahead of a dry cold front that will bring colder temperatures and increased winds to kick off February. Benign and dry weather will persist with a blocking ridge deflecting the storm track for the Sierra and western
Nevada until further notice, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
Aside, from another round of potentially gusty east winds along the Sierra crest next weekend, we will maintain a rather quiet pattern with mild temperatures and dry weather.

The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority has approved a contract for the 2022 Lights on the Lake fireworks show on the fourth of July.
Absent for the last two July 4 celebrations on the South Shore due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions, organizers will try once again.
There is still the possibility of canceling the July 4 show, depending on the pandemic and any possible restrictions that would be associated with it, but at this time plans are underway.
There is no word from other jurisdictions around Lake Tahoe as to the status of their fireworks shows.
Annual South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue awards celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held its annual awards ceremony on Friday night, celebrating a year of new firefighters, new babies, promotions, and other accomplishments.
SLTFR Chief Clive Savacool led the ceremony with about 60 people filling City Council Chambers. He reflected on 2021 and the challenges the department faced with fires, city evacuations, snowstorms, and power outages, as well as managing the pandemic with sick firefighters and vaccination clinics.

Christopher Andrew William Little, 29, of South Lake Tahoe, born December 21, 1992, died January 25, 2022. He is the son of Duane and Tamara Wallace of South Lake Tahoe and Kevin Little of Tulare. He attended local schools and graduated from STHS in 2011. He was a member of the wrestling team and took the NIAA championship in 2007. Chris was an avid skier, snowboarder, rock climber, and fisherman. He was an electrician and had a dog grooming business called Pup Culture. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 8 and was baptized by his grandfather Rev. Paul Wallace in Lake Tahoe.

NEVADA CITY, Calif. – The Tahoe National Forest is seeking public input on its proposed Pines to Mines trail project. The proposed Pines to Mines multi-use trail would run 68 miles in length and would connect Nevada City to Truckee, Calif. It would include existing Forest Service network trails and would involve some new trail construction.

TAHOMA, Calif. - In honor of the history of hosting the 1960 Olympic Nordic events at what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park, the Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting Olympic Trails Day on February 20, 2022.
The Foundation will be proving free day-use parking passes to encourage snow sports experiences to all. The first 50 registrants will have their State Park parking pass paid for by the Foundation. The park is open from sunrise to sunset.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tahoe Turning Point served the community for 40 years with residential treatment homes for at-risk young men. The non-profit offered a wraparound treatment plan addressing emotional health, a structured school plan as well as substance abuse support - all funded by the State of California.
TRPA unanimously approves Tahoe Keys Control Methods Test

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Following approval from the Lahontan Water Quality Control Board on January 13, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board voted unanimously on Wednesday to certify the Final Environmental Impact Statement and approve the Tahoe Keys Lagoons Aquatic Weed Control Methods Test Project.
The agency’s vote clears the way for a multifaceted test of methods to control aquatic invasive weeds. The range of proven and innovative weed control methods will be tested in targeted areas within the Tahoe Keys.
Douglas County man arrested after a stabbing in Meyers, hit and run in South Lake Tahoe

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - A Meyers resident suffered a stab wound to his chest after confronting a man parked in his driveway on Sawmill Road on January 21. The victim was leaving his home at about 5:00 p.m. when he saw a man parked in a yellow Dodge Ram tow truck. A short argument occurred and the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim with a black knife.
The knife went into the victim's chest just above the heart, resulting in a partially collapsed lung and he was transported to Barton Hospital.
Police investigating after South Lake Tahoe school bus hit by BB

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A school bus traveling on Blackwood Avenue in South Lake Tahoe was hit by an apparent BB on Tuesday afternoon.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) informed families in an email of the incident which happened at 3:54 p.m. January 25, 2022.
There were no injuries but the bus had some window damage.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) were in the area of the 3700 block of Blackwood last night, and again Wednesday to speak to possible witnesses and gather evidence. It remains under investigation.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - It appears the post-holiday surge of COVID-19 cases in El Dorado County is starting to decline as daily cases have been dropping. During the last surge, hospitalizations were about two weeks after recorded cases, and any related deaths were two to four weeks after the hospitalizations. There have been 229 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since yesterday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 23,847. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive.
Washoe County commissioners to abolish the position of constable in Incline Village

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Washoe County Commissioners today held a Hearing to abolish the office of the constable in Incline Village.
They heard a first reading of an ordinance to amend the Washoe County Code to abolish the position. Other constables’ offices in Washoe County were abolished in 1998 as their roles in civil cases became obsolete with the expansion of local law enforcement.

COVID-19 testing site moves in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The COVID-19 testing site has been relocated to a new location in the El Dorado Center at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Takela Drive in South Lake Tahoe.
The address is 3368 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite #100. They are open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and are closed for lunch from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

LTUSD opens up home sporting events to athlete's family members

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) postponed student concerts and canceled in-person attendance at home sporting events when they were experiencing high levels of student and staff absences due to COVID-19.
Student and staff absences trended down sharply last week according to LTUSD, and as of Monday, absences since Wednesday decreased by 66 percent.
Taking into consideration that there are very few home games remaining, especially for seniors, LTUSD "is inviting family members in athletes’ households to attend this week’s home games."
South Lake Tahoe motel suffers damage in fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A very quick response by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) Monday morning helped keep fire damage to three rooms at the Pinewood Inn.
At 11:34 a.m. Monday, the report of a structure fire at the South Lake Tahoe motel came into emergency dispatch. The Pinewood Inn is located at 3818 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
SLTFR Battalion Chief Jay Manning was just two blocks away when the call came in and as he pulled into the motel parking lot he saw smoke coming from one of the rooms on the east wing.

With the fourth annual Ski California Safety Day planned for Saturday, January 29, member resorts in California and Nevada are planning a variety of safety-themed activities to educate skiers and riders about avoiding collisions and other general skier safety initiatives. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The future Ski Run Community Park has become the latest recipient of a donation from the Angel of Tahoe, Mrs. Lisa Maloff. She donated $50,000 to support the park that is being built on a vacant lot on Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe.
Mrs. Maloff continues her long history of directly supporting the health and well-being of the lake and its communities and her list of donations is a lengthy one.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just six months, supporters of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) have been able to raise the funds necessary to build a state-of-the-art wildlife hospital and recovery center in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seasonably warm afternoons will return for most of this week with generally light winds. A quick system will bring a shot of
colder air and an east wind shift Tuesday with another round of gusty winds along the Sierra crest. Meaningful precipitation remains unlikely through the end of the month, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Wylder Hotel Hope Valley continues its interpretive programs on Eastern Sierra history with a living history/Chautauqua style presentation on one of Lake Tahoe’s most colorful characters, George Whittell, the “Accidental Conservationist.”
Eastern Sierra historian David Woodruff takes on the character of one of the wealthiest men in the United States, who kept an African Lion for a pet, built one of the most beautiful pleasure crafts to navigate Lake Tahoe, entertained former Presidents, and unintentionally conserved a large portion of Lake Tahoe lands for the public to enjoy today.
