Wind, rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe, snow at upper elevations
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/16/2017 - 12:01pmThe South Shore has been getting just rain, and lots of it since the recent storm reached the Sierra Wednesday. Heavenly Mountain Resort received 11" of snow overnight, just ahead of their Friday opening day. Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows each received 14" from this storm, and 7" at Kirkwood.
Snow is expected at both lake level and at the resorts tonight before the system passes through.
Storm causing power outages around Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/15/2017 - 10:40pm11:20PM Update: The power outages, which occurred at 10:01 p.m. still affect over 14,000 customers of NV Energy. The estimated time of restoration is 12:45 a.m. Thursday.

Many NV Energy customers in Incline Village, much of the Douglas County portion at Lake Tahoe and Carson City are currently without power. 14,207 homes and businesses are affected.
A winter storm is currently passing through the Sierra with high winds and rain at lake level, gusts over 100 mph and heavy snow over the passes. The winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 a.m. Friday, November 17.
Work completed on new transformer for North Shore
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/15/2017 - 9:00pmThe Brockway substation in Kings Beach was switched back into service Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m. The 50+ year old substation had been temporarily shut down for necessary repairs due to damage sustained during this year’s winter storms.
A new transformer was installed to replace equipment that had caught on fire during extreme weather experienced in the Lake Tahoe region in January and February "Snowmegeddon."
SLT Fire Chief Jeff Meston wins award
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/15/2017 - 5:38pmChief Jeff Meston of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is the recipient of the Ed Bent Training Excellence Award in recognition of being the Outstanding Fire Instructor of the Year at the California Training Officers Symposium held this week in Fresno, California.
The award was created many years ago on behalf of Ed Bent for his contribution as a founding father of statewide training and curriculum for the California Fire Service.

Update on recovered bodies at Fallen Leaf Lake

Boys & Girls Club proposes idea of new home to LTUSD
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/14/2017 - 11:57pmWhat is currently six portable buildings at the Al Tahoe school site could be a new home for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT). That is the idea Jude Wood presented to the school board Tuesday night.
Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.
Heavenly opens for the season on Friday

“We’re thrilled to begin the ski season at Heavenly this Friday,” said Mike Goar, senior vice president of mountain division and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort. “We’ve been hard at work making snow at every opportunity, and current forecasts are calling for snow. We’re excited to begin another terrific ski season.”
Douglas County Jail wins honors for inmate care

Their jail was selected for the prestigious award from over 500 jails and prisons across the country.
DCSO representatives attended the NCCHC ceremony to pick up their award.

Some loud booms will be heard around the South Shore during testing.

New member appointed to Lake Valley Fire Board of Directors

Hogan is the Regional President for U.S. Bank's Central California and Northern Nevada Community Banking Region and has been employed with the bank for the last 25 years. As regional president, he oversees the banking groups in the region including Commercial, Retail, Business Banking, and Private Banking. He holds Bachelor of Science degrees in both Economics and Government from California State University Sacramento.
First firefighting boat of its kind on Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/13/2017 - 9:46pmTahoe Douglas Fire Protection District christened Marine 24 Monday, giving Lake Tahoe its first year-round firefighting boat.
At a cost of almost $500,000, Marine 24 is able to fight fire from hoses on board as well as hooking up to pipes along lakefront homes in Douglas County and piping water from the lake into water tenders. The boat can send water 300 feet, but their main function will be to pump water into pipes at the shore that water tenders will hook up to.

Bruce's Legacy, the underwater search and recovery team from Wisconsin, was at Fallen Leaf Lake recently, searching the water for a missing person. What they found was more than expected when bodies of both a man and woman were recovered.

Thanks to Vail’s generous EpicPromise grant, Kirkwood Mountain Resort employees had the opportunity to volunteer at Bread & Broth’s November 6 Monday Meal through B&B’s ‘Adopt A Day of Nourishment' program. Kirkwood Security Officers Mark DeSacia, Rick Hofheins and Charlie Noury and David McCullers, Security Manager, all volunteered their time and effort to make a difference in the lives of those attending the meal served at Grace Hall.

Thank you so much for all you did for us on the day we hiked Mt. Tallac. We enjoyed your company and couldn't have done it without you guys as our chaperones, or your encouragement.
The healthy, thoughtfully put together snack bags were so good, even the chipmunks were eyeballing them. They gave us the fuel to climb up the mountain and the taco truck gave us the motivation to do it. The tacos were delicious and so were delicious and so were the brownies!

El Dorado County awarded DUI prosecution grant
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/12/2017 - 9:18pmThose arrested for DUI in El Dorado County, especially repeat offenders and those involved in fatal or injury crashes, can expect to face highly trained, specialized prosecutors, funded by a $195,677.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). The grant to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office will fund a Vertical Prosecution team that will work cases from arrest through conviction and sentencing.

The Meyers Community Foundation's 7th annual Tree Lighting Celebration will be held on Friday, December 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (weather permitting). Catch Santa arriving by a Calstar helicopter, enjoy hot chocolate and popcorn and see the Lake Valley Fire Christmas Truck.

The exhibit includes toys from the 1870s through the 1890s that were played with by Fred Dangberg, Jr., and his siblings, as well as numerous toys enjoyed by Fred’s five children and one grandson from the 1900s through the 1940s.

Let's decide now to rally around leaders who prioritize care for others above personal gain or party lines. Let's rally around caring for our earth, for people, for communities. This feels like a new idea because care challenges the perverse rationale of greed and the foolish habit of partisan divisions we are so used to. We must actively resist the messages of the market that say we need to stay hooked on getting more things to be happy.
Placer County looking for someone to reinvent Tahoe City firehouse properties

Experienced mixed-use development firms and other interested parties are invited to submit letters of interest for a long-term lease and their reuse concept for the former firehouse, Tahoe Community Center building and the former visitor center building.
Prescribed fires resume around Lake Tahoe

Operations are scheduled to take place at or near D.L. Bliss State Park, Carnelian Bay, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Diamond Peak Ski Resort area, Glenbrook, upper and lower Kingsbury Grade and south and east of the Lake Tahoe Airport.

Rotarians honor Lake Tahoe area veterans

Club member Brian Williams, US Marines (retired), organized this year's event as he does each year, inviting local veterans for lunch and a program. The Marine Corps 242nd birthday fell on the event this year, and the former Marine had a special birthday for the attendees to enjoy.

Veterans from WWII to Vietnam honored at Barton Skilled Nursing

This annual celebration included singing, refreshments and introduction of those six who now live at Skilled Nursing but served their country during the Vietnam War, Korea War and/or World War II.

The six-foot tall volleyball player from South Lake Tahoe is now headed to the next level and will be playing for Sonoma State next fall.
"I'm so excited," said McKenna as she signed a letter of intent to be the newest Sonoma Seawolf at the high school Thursday. Besides playing volleyball she will also be studying nursing.
McKenna started playing volleyball in seventh grade and hasn't looked back.

Vacation rental scams through Craigslist continue in South Lake Tahoe

South Tahoe Now has been warning people for years about renting both short-term and long-term homes through Craigslist, the online classified ad forum.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is warning potential vacation home renters that scams continue on Craigslist.
NDOT projects at Lake Tahoe will soon wrap up for season

10,000 without power in Kings Beach and Incline Village

Liberty Utilities customers were getting a feed from NV Energy as thire Brockway Substation has been down for repairs in preparation for winter.
8.839 business and residential customers in Incline Village are without power, and an additional 1,593 in Kings Beach.
Initially they expected the power to be down until 4:00 a.m. Friday, but Liberty is hoping for power to be back to NV Energy by 11:00 p.m., allowing them to bring all customers back online.
South Shore non-profits receive $51,000 from American Century Championship
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/09/2017 - 5:53pmAmerican Century Championship continues to impact the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, even months after the annual tournament is over. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to local and national non-profits.
On Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Investments gave 30 local organizations checks in the amount of $500 to $5,000 to help them serve the community.

The event will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will feature handmade jewelry, local authors, hair accessories, hand made crafts, gift items, drawing prizes, and more.

New cannons to fight avalanches in South Lake Tahoe

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was installing new cannons to replace the 25-year-old equipment on Flagpole Mountain, home to the Echo Summit avalanche control operations.
