Letter: LTVA and STR thank community for food and toy donations
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 12/13/2017 - 11:17amFor the fifth year, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) and South Tahoe Refuse & Recycling (STR) teamed up to benefit Christmas Cheer All Year with “drive and drop” at LTVA’s California Visitors Center and curbside collection on regular garbage pick-up days.
Once again we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our South Shore community. 160 pounds of food and 85 toys were collected.
Thank you to all the individuals and businesses who participated in making the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

Foggy start to the day in Lake Tahoe; Forecast shows sunny and warming
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/13/2017 - 10:58amThe fog was socked in around Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning, but its starting to recede and retreat and should be all clear by noon.
It isn't often when the temperature of the lake is warmer than the air, but that is what happens when fog is created. The cold air mass condensates into clouds and sits low over the lake and South Lake Tahoe. The ski resorts were sitting above the fog and had a very sunny morning.
Possible new home for South Lake Tahoe homeless warming room
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 4:22pmAt the last count there were 82 homeless persons and ten homeless families living in South Lake Tahoe, and to help protect them during the winter, the Lake Tahoe Homeless Coalition has operated a Warm Room in the city.
They too are now homeless and asked the City Council on Tuesday to move into the city-owned building at 1195 Rufus Allen Boulevard, the former home of Unity at the Lake church.
Two new deputies for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Deputies Stephen Graves and Eric Jenkins took their oaths of office in the presence of family and friends, along with several employees of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 2:34pmThe South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) is now stronger by ten members as the most recent class of graduates was announced at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.
Nearly 100 residents have been trained in the program offered by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR).
“The STAT program is designed to have neighbors helping neighbors,” said South Tahoe Fire Department Chief Jeff Meston.
Cannabis urgency ordinance continues in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 2:05pm"This is not about making money, its about doing it right," said Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis during Tuesday's City Council vote on cannabis sales in South Lake Tahoe.
Davis was speaking about their decision to approve an urgency ordinance and to take their time in creating the City's ordinance for legal cannabis sales in South Lake Tahoe. The moratorium will remain in effect for 45 days and expires on January 21, 2018 unless the City Council extends it before then.

Nevada doctor arrested on distribution of opioids and health care fraud charges
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/12/2017 - 10:39amDr. Devendra I. Patel, aka Devendrakumar I. Patel, 58, of Elko, Nev., was arrested Tuesday on 39 charges of unlawful distribution of prescriptions opioids and Medicaid fraud.
Patel is charged with 36-counts of distribution of controlled substances such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and three-counts of health care fraud. He is a cardiologist at his medical practice, Northeastern Nevada Cardiology. The statutory maximum penalty for distribution of a controlled substance is 10 years in prison and the maximum penalty for health care fraud is 10 years in prison.
South Lake Tahoe has new mayor and mayor pro tem

Wendy David returns as mayor, a position she held in 2016. She was mayor pro tem during 2017.
Tom Davis returns as vice mayor for the fifth time.
"I want to thank the Council for your support," said Mayor David. "I want to look at how we want to move forward and focus on community conversation. It's what brings us together. Community conversation is the most important thing we'll do next year."

Corvette stuffed with toys for local children goes through South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/11/2017 - 10:27pmFor the second straight year, a stuffed Corvette made its way through South Lake Tahoe to deliver toys and food for kids to Christmas Cheer.
Bill Kirschner, at the wheel of his 2017 Grand Sport, gathered the donated toys and other items from other Lake Tahoe Corvette Club members and community members. Christmas Cheer will now pass them on to local children in need of some extra holiday cheer.

Elves stop by the Children's Memorial Tree
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 12/11/2017 - 3:36pmSanta's Elves were at it again this year in South Lake Tahoe! They visited the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial tree for the fifth straight year, leaving behind signs of Christmas with stockings and garland.
There is a stocking at the tree for every child who is memorialized there.
The memorial was created 26 years ago when tragedy struct the local community when South Tahoe High students Rory Hrbacek, Sandy Haynes, and Casey Wells died in an vehicle accident on Pioneer Trail.
Snowboarder identified in Thursday's accident at a Lake Tahoe resort
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/11/2017 - 12:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has identified David Karlin of Orangevale, California as the man who died after a snowboarding accident at Sierra-at-Tahoe Thursday.
The 23-year-old man fell at approximately 1:15 p.m. December 7 as he was snowboarding and slid at a high rate of speed down the Lower Snowshoe run and into a fence near its intersection with the Sugar N' Spice run. Sierra-at-Tahoe ski patrol called for paramedics and air support.

Series of earthquakes in Mammoth Lakes - Mono Lake area
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/08/2017 - 8:58pmThe have been eight tremblers in the Mammoth Lakes / Mono Lake area in the last 12 hours, the smallest measured 1.2 on the Richter Scale, the largest at 3.7, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory on the UNR campus.
This area is a very active earthquake area, with swarms not unusual as it is one of the most seismically active volcanic regions in California. In 2014, there were more than 600 registered earthquakes in Mammoth in 36 hours.
South Lake Tahoe councilwoman to chair conservancy board
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/08/2017 - 6:30pmDuring their meeting Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board elected South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Brooke Laine as their chair. She is the City’s appointee to the Board and will be replacing longtime Chair Larry Sevison.
The Board also elected Lynn Suter as Vice Chair, filling a post vacated by former Conservancy Board Member John Hooper earlier this year.

Mild days, cold nights in the 7-day forecast; No snow for now
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/08/2017 - 8:30amWhile snow is falling along the southern part of the U.S. from Texas to Virginia, Lake Tahoe is experiencing a high pressure system with dry conditions with valley inversions, cold nights and light winds for the next 10 days. Daytime highs will be 5-8 degrees above average, and the overnight lows will be below average.
Air stagnation forecast from limited mixing and light winds which will promote hazy skies and potential air quality issues under the 5,000 foot level.
Highs in the low-50s, lows under 20 is in the forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno:

Six large fires in California burn 141,000 acres
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/07/2017 - 10:03pmAlmost 200,000 people have been evacuated from their homes as six large fires continue to burn out of control in Southern California. 500 confirmed structures have been destroyed and 23,000 homes are still threatened.
The largest of the fire, the Thomas Fire, has burned 115,000 acres and is five percent contained. It is in Ventura County between Hwy 150 and Hwy 126, north of Santa Paula.
The Creek Fire has burned 15,323 acres and is now 20 percent contained. It is Los Angeles County east of Sylmar.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/07/2017 - 8:25pmFlu season is ramping up and the El Dorado County Public Health is reminding people to get vaccinated. Two Washoe County residents in their 80s died this week due to the flu.
“Thanksgiving week was the first week this fall that the numbers of people in the U.S. who saw their healthcare providers for flu-like symptoms were higher than baseline, heralding the onset of the flu season,” said El Dorado County Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams. “Vaccination can prevent the flu.”
Grandma and grandpa scams on the rise

The callers claim to be a person's grandchild and they are in need of financial assistance because they're in jail, or have been involved in an accident. It is not unusual for scammers to use personal information about a potential victim’s family members in order to sound credible. This type of information is often easily obtained via the Internet or social media.

Carson City arrest nets 5 pounds of meth and half pound of heroin
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/06/2017 - 7:53pmTwo people face drug trafficking and transportation charges after deputies recovered more than 5 pounds of methamphetamine and around a half pound of heroin during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested were Kimberly Ann Lopes, 36, and Danny Lyle Jensen II, 38, both of Las Vegas. Each face two level 3 charges of trafficking controlled substances, 1 count each of transportation of controlled substances, and 1 count each of possession of controlled substances for sales.

Getting new coats as gifts and need a place for your gently used old ones? The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Department is holding their annual Coats for Kids Drive starting December 26, 2017.
Bins will be set up at the two stations, Station 1 at 1252 Ski Run Boulevard and Station 2 at 2101 Lake Tahoe Boulevard from December 26 - January 31, 2018. The donated coats will be distributed to Choices for Children and Tahoe Youth & Family Services and will keep kids, from the little ones to teenagers, warm and protected from Tahoe's cold winter.

USFS taking reservations for 5th grade snowshoe program
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/06/2017 - 10:30amThe 2018 Winter Trek conservation program for fifth-grade students will run from January 9 to March 29, and sign-ups with U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) for the popular program begin December 18.
Fifth-grade teachers may reserve a spot by calling the Forest Supervisor’s office at 530-543-2789, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Field trips are generally three hours long and are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, weather permitting.

Melting Arctic ice could lead to more severe droughts in California
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/05/2017 - 4:54pmArctic sea ice loss of the magnitude expected in the next few decades could impact California’s rainfall and exacerbate future droughts, according to new research released December 5, 2017 led by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) scientists.
The study said the melting ice could leave California vulnerable to a recurrence of the severe drought suffered in recent years, as a result of high pressure systems that push away rain-bearing storms, according to the LLNL press release.

Local firefighters on their way to fight the Thomas Fire in Ventura County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/05/2017 - 12:25pmOver 60 fire-fighting personnel from the Tahoe Basin Operational Area have been deployed to the Thomas Fire which is burning out of control in Ventura County, Calif. 15 engines, making up three strike crews, will be joining one thousand others fighting the fire which started at approximately 6:28 p.m. Monday evening.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temple Bat Yam is having their inaugural Vodka and Latkes fundraiser on Wednesday, December 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Lakeland Village Clubhouse.
Holiday tradition is being brought to the South Lake Tahoe community as the Temple pairs both traditional and creative latkes with Tahoe Blue Vodka cocktails. There will also be other appetizers and, of course, traditional jelly donuts. A raffle and games will also be featured to make this a "must-do" on your holiday list of activities.
Man severely burned after falling asleep at a Lake Tahoe resort
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/05/2017 - 10:59amA man who was visiting Lake Tahoe is now in the U.C. Davis Burn Center after falling asleep in front of a fireplace and catching on fire.
Just after midnight on December 5, Tahoe Douglas Fire crews responded to the Ridge Tahoe on a call of a man burned in a fire in one of their rooms. The unidentified man fell asleep in front of a gas fireplace. He awoke to find himself on fire and called for help. Firemen extinguished the fire and the man was transported via Cal Star to the burn center. He was reported to have severe burns to just under 50 percent of his body.
Carson City AAA office to handle DMV services for both CA and NV
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/05/2017 - 12:06amThose dreading the day they have to wait in lines at the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) now have another option to get paperwork processed.
Starting December 4, 2017, the American Automobile Association (AAA) office in Carson City will take over-the-counter transactions for both the Nevada and California DMV.
Nevada transactions are available to both members of AAA and non-members. The California services in Carson City will be limited to members-only with the exception of Dealer services.
