Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows plans base-to-base gondola to open by 2019

The freshly branded “California Express” gondola is targeted to open ahead of the 2019-20 winter season. The connection of these two mountains will realize the long-held dream of the pioneers who brought the sport of skiing and the 1960 Winter Olympics to Squaw Valley nearly 60 years ago.

New York performer returns home to teach South Lake Tahoe youth
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/24/2017 - 11:06pmNew York performer and choreographer Sebastiani Romagnolo grew up dancing with Marcia Sarosik at her South Lake Tahoe dance studio, and he returned to those roots this week to help teach the next generation of performers.
The 2007 South Tahoe High and 2011 New York University (NYU) graduate took time out his hectic east coast schedule to head west to visit family in South Lake Tahoe, and visits to town always include a stop by Sarosik's studio.
Many may remember his talent as he headlined many South Tahoe High musicals, and now he's entertaining audiences in New York.

Tahoe Douglas Fire offering free ash cans to those living in their district
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/24/2017 - 5:01pmCooler nights are prompting residents to start burning wood in the fireplaces and stoves, and proper disposal of the remaining ashes are important in preventing fires in trash cans and yards.
The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District has partnered with Kingsbury Hardware again to provide ash cans to the homeowners of the Fire District for the safe disposal of hot ashes. This program is available free of charge to those residents who are part of the district who use a wood burning appliance to heat their homes.

South Tahoe High student photography on display at City Hall

Some of the photographers were on hand a reception hosted by the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance on Monday, the second since the gallery was opened in June of this year. Work of local artists will hang on the walls at the entrance of City Hall at the airport throughout the year and will be rotated quarterly.
Some Christmas Valley residents to be without power Tuesday

Approximately 20 customers will be affected and they have been notified.

Douglas County forming housing task force

This has been in the works since July when they entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nevada Rural Housing Authority “For Creating a Viable Path to Achieving Affordable Housing for Douglas County, Nevada.”
Part of the Board of County Commissioners Strategic Plan includes evaluating the potential of offering affordable housing development incentives through the update of the Housing Element of the Master Plan.
Second bird in El Dorado County tests positive for West Nile Virus
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/22/2017 - 8:03pmA bird found on the west slope of El Dorado County has tested positive for West Nile virus, the second for 2017. The bird found near Garden Valley, an Acorn Woodpecker, was tested on September 29 and county health officials just received confirmation this week it had the virus.
To date there have been 463 dead birds to test positive in 38 counties in California. Nearby Sacramento has had 86 birds and Placer County, three birds.
Packaged salad mixes and vegetables recalled
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/22/2017 - 10:22amEven though there has been no illnesses reported with their products, Mann Packing of Salinas, California is being cautious and voluntarily recalling minimally processed vegetable products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Mann Packing is issuing this recall in response to a single positive result found on one of their products during random sampling by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Over 20 brands of vegetable items from Walmart, Safeway/Albertson's and Trader Joe's have been pulled from shelves are part of the recall notice.

Power out to parts of South Lake Tahoe after car hits power pole

Complete details are not yet available but early reports say a car hit a power pole. Liberty Utilities responded shortly after 8:00 a.m.

Woman and juvenile identified as victims in deadly SR-88 crash

South Lake Tahoe hockey games to raise funds for Santa Rosa fire victims

Thirteen families from the Santa Rosa hockey organization lost their homes in the recent wildfires.

The road and weather report:
California Highway Patrol (CHP) is reporting an accident just east of Old Meyers Grade on Highway 50. At about 6:20 a.m., a big rig and vehicle collided, vehicle is off the road. Tow trucks are on the way and it is unknown if there are any injuries at this time.
CHP is also reporting a big rig blocking SR-89 north of Luther Pass as of 7:00 a.m.
Truckee men arrested on sex with minor charges
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/19/2017 - 10:24pmAn ongoing investigation by the Placer County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), Tahoe Station and the PCSO Special Operations detectives has led two the arrest of two Truckee men on suspicious of having unlawful sexual relations with minors under the age of 16.
Christopher Anthony Renai, 23, was arrested on October 5 near his job in Truckee, and Skyler William Ford, 21, was arrested at his home October 16.
Both remain in custody at the Placer County Jail; Renai's bail is set at $100,000 and Ford's is set at $305,000.
Their next court dates are both set for November 8.
City of South Lake Tahoe takes first look at ban of Styrofoam
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/19/2017 - 9:51pmThrowaway polystyrene coffee cups, soup bowls, plates, trays, meat packing trays, egg cartons, to-go boxes and packing peanuts are already a thing of the past in cities across the country, and South Lake Tahoe might soon have their name on that list.
City Council members heard a presentation at their October 17 meeting, testing the waters to see if there is a desire to eliminate or limit the use of Polystyrene within the City limits.
Single use plastic bags in grocery stores were banned in South Lake Tahoe in 2013 and recently made a pledge to use 100 percent renewable energy by 2032.
Coast Guard and Tahoe Douglas Fire respond to boater in distress
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/19/2017 - 7:03pmTahoe Douglas Fire and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a distress call Thursday evening after a sailor was unable to make it back to shore with the high winds on Lake Tahoe.
The unidentified man called for help about 5:15 p.m. when he was about one-quarter mile off the shore at Cave Rock. Winds were stronger than he thought and was unable to make it to the Cave Rock boat ramp where he put the 10-12 foot boat in.
Tahoe Douglas Fire was able to help the man get to Cedarbrook, north of Cave Rock where he moored the boat. There were no injuries.
Parents of Addicted Loved Ones support group starts in South Lake Tahoe

Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL), is a support group of parents helping parents that meets at Tahoe Youth & Family Services every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The sessions are free of charge.
PAL can also help spouses who feel they have to parent their addicted partner.
PAL is open to all sober family members and friends who are 18-year-old and older.

Two dead after car collides with cement truck on SR-88
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/18/2017 - 7:55pmTwo people died Wednesday afternoon after a Suzuki SUV collided with a cement truck on State Route 88 at Centerville Lane in Minden according to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP).
One of the occupants of the SUV died at the scene and the other occupant was transported to Renown Medical Center via Care Flight with life-threatening injuries. They later died at the hospital according to NHP's Twitter page.
Both lanes of SR-88 were closed for awhile as emergency crews responded to the crash.
No names have been released.
Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” to be unveiled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Mother Nature delayed the completion of the Spirit of Competition bronze sculpture, but now it is ready and will be unveiled to the public in a ceremony on Friday, October 27 at 12:00 p.m. at Champion's Plaza.
Artist Gareth Curtiss has a studio in Montana, and wildfires in the area set back his completion date and canceled the previously scheduled ceremony.
Robert Rossi honored for decades of dedication to Lake Valley Fire Protection District

The agreement between TTD and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) to allow current students with a valid Lake Tahoe Community College identification card to ride all local transit services at no charge during the academic year ending June 30, 2018.
E-commerce safe zone set up at Washoe County Sheriff's Office

Two parking spaces in front of the Sheriff’s headquarters at 911 Parr Boulevard in Reno are reserved specifically for e-commerce transactions. Those spaces are located near the front of the parking lot, in a well-lit area subject to 24-hour video surveillance.

NAMI El Dorado County is hosting an information gathering hour on Thursday, November 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room.
They would like the public's perspective as El Dorado County Behavioral Health is seeking public input for their FY18/19 Mental Health Services Plan Update.
The county will be providing public meetings, using social media, and promoting in news media to get the word out about the plan, so attendance and input at this meeting will help them plan.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/18/2017 - 9:47amThe Douglas County Commissioners have canceled their November 2, 2017 agenda meeting as two or more commissioners will be attending the Nevada Local Elected Officials’ White House Convention on November 3 in Washington D.C. The purpose of this event is to develop a working relationship between the White House/Federal Agencies and the County Commissioners and Legislators of Nevada.
The next regularly scheduled Board of County Commission meeting will be in Lake Tahoe on November 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
