South Lake Tahoe will celebrate Earth Day with a full day of education, live music, arts and crafts and with local vendors and food at Bijou Community Park on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Recognize and celebrate our region’s unique beauty while being educated about local environmental issues. The public is invited to the free event where they will learn about ways to counteract global climate change through recycling and composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing our ecological footprint.

Mountain Resort Television reporter Mikaila Bird hits the trails to view the beautiful scenery and waterfalls in Emerald Bay, and interviews Heidi Doyle of Sierra State Parks Foundation to find out what they have going on for the spring and summer seasons.

The City of South Lake Tahoe has opened the swimming pool at the Recreation and Swim Complex to kayakers who want to practice their rolling skills before heading out to the lake and rivers.

The controlled and calm waters of the pool are an excellent place to practice. It will be open to kayaks every Saturday through May 21 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There is no instruction available. Those wishing to use the facilities must bring their own kayak. Helmets and life vests are recommended.

A very energetic and outgoing volunteer team from Vail Resort’s Retail Group joined the Bread & Broth volunteers to donate their time to serve the April 11 evening dinner at St. Theresa Grace Hall. With funds provided by the Vail EpicPromise Grant program, Heavenly Mountain Resort sponsored the Monday meal and had Retail Group Store Managers Ryan Olm, Heather Searcy, Amy Grannick, Josh Bastille and Marcie Canale team up and participate in the evening’s dinner event.

South Lake Tahoe has a new gallery, the Benko Art Gallery, and they'll be celebrating their grand opening on Sunday, April 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with a celebration that will include beverages, hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Benko is located in the new Highland Village, located where the Highland Inn was once located at 3979 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel will speak to the South Tahoe Chamber on Monday, April 18 during a special meeting that begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Catina Restaurant.

Novasel represents District 5 which includes South Lake Tahoe, Meyers and Tahoma.

The meeting is open to Chamber members and the public.

Sue will begin speaking at about 6:30 p.m. after some Chamber business is conducted. There will be a question and answer period moderated by the Chamber Board President in order to get as many questions answered as possible.

Two people were arrested in Carson City on Wednesday as the result of a month-long investigation into the drug trafficking of methamphetamine into the city from Reno.

Marell Maurice Johnson, 42, and Desire Lynn Kissel-Hunziker, 25, were arrested at the North Carson Street Taco Bell by the Nevada DPS Tri-Net team after a sale, and purchase, of drugs transpired. The pair allegedly had nearly 1 pound of high quality methamphetamine for sale on them at the time of their arrest.

The 2016 construction season in the Tahoe Basin will get under way next week with work resuming on a multi-year State Highway 89 project, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today.

The $70.1 million water-quality improvement project is building new drainage facilities to collect and treat stormwater runoff, adding curbs and gutters, widening the highway and repaving an eight-mile section of Highway 89 between Tahoma and Tahoe City. Work this season will focus on the remaining four miles of the project between Eagle Rock and Granlibakken Road.

Two massive boulders that fell onto State Route 4 at Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County have been removed by dynamite.

On March 26, crews from Caltrans District 10 responded to a report of boulders in the roadway, and there they found two boulders on the roadway, which has been closed for the winter season. One was estimated to be 300 tons and measured 16’ tall x 25’ wide x 18’ thick while the other was about 100 tons and 14’ tall x 20’ wide x 10’ thick.

Caltrans crews used approximately 30 pounds of explosive material to detonate the boulders which created about 700 yards of rock.

Normally it is law enforcement that responds to vehicle crashes, but this time, it was an El Dorado County Sheriff's deputy who needed assistance.

Three cars were involved in the 6:30 p.m. accident on Monday, April 11, 2016 at the intersection of Lake Tahoe Blvd. and Tata Lane.

The South Lake Tahoe Outrigger Canoe Club is kicking off their 2016 season with a New Paddlers Meet and Greet on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. in the Aspen Room of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center.

The club is using this introductory meeting to expand their adult and junior programs, as well as their recreational crew. No experience is necessary and everyone age 8 and over is welcome.

When Lake Tahoe reached its natural rim on April 9, it was the first time in 300 days that it had done so. Water supply forecasters now expect the lake to rise another 1.2 feet this summer (0.8 feet on the low end to almost 1.9 feet on the high end).

Water supply forecasts are made by the US National Weather Service California Nevada River Forecast Center Forecast Center in coordination with the Natural Resource Conservation Service.

People in South Lake Tahoe woke up to a covering of snow on the ground Thursday morning, and widely scattered light snow showers should continue until 11 p.m. tonight according to the National Weather Service.

There is a lake wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe until 8:00 p.m. Thursday with winds from the southwest 15 to 25 mph, and gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on the lake will be 2 to 4 feet

Staples may soon follow in the steps of Office Depot and become the second stationery "box store" to close its doors in South Lake Tahoe.

Even though unconfirmed with the corporate offices, employees at the store said they will be closing their doors on June 4, 2016. When South Tahoe Now spoke to store management we were referred to the corporate offices who have not returned calls.

To prepare for the $57 million Caltrans project that will start in South Lake Tahoe in 2017, Southwest Gas is continuing their gas-line relocation work along Highway 50 from the "Y" to Al Tahoe Blvd this spring and summer.

The construction work will be completed during both daytime and nighttime hours and Southwest Gas officials told South Tahoe Now there will be no major bottlenecks that were prevalent last summer.

"There will be less lane restrictions and improved traffic flow," said Stephen Miller, of Southwest Gas Corporate Communications.

Matthew Keys, 29, former web producer and network site administrator for KTXL FOX40, a Sacramento television station, was sentenced today to two years in prison for inciting, assisting, and conducting a weeks-long campaign of online attacks against FOX40 and The Los Angeles Times, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner and FBI Special Agent in Charge Monica M. Miller announced.

An oil leak found Monday, April 11, 2016 at the Tahoe Keys Marina is being cleaned up, but the source of the oil is still unknown. After being found, the spill was reported to the California Office of Emergency Services, the agency that deals with oils spill hazardous materials.

The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) is investigating the leak and have taken samples to test to try and determine origin.

Clean Harbors has been hired by the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association to clean up the oil. Their truck and containment boom were at the marina on Tuesday.
