Mom’s Morning Out: A morning of health and wellness

Women of all ages are invited to celebrate the health and wellness of women at the fifth annual Mom’s Morning Out on Saturday, April 30.

“Mom’s Morning Out is an event just for women that unites the body and mind.” says Natasha Schue, Barton’s Community Relations Coordinator. “It’s an opportunity to slow down, unwind, and be pampered.”

The first activity, Beyond Yoga with The Studio Lake Tahoe, starts at 8:00 a.m. Other fitness classes throughout the morning include Cardio Core with Tahoe Fit and Healthy Mommies Yoga with Lake Tahoe Yoga.

Don Henley added to Harvey's Outdoor Arena 2016 lineup

Don Henley, founding member of the Eagles as well as a successful solo artist, will be in South Lake Tahoe this summer as part of of the Harvey's Outdoor Concert Series.

Henley is on tour this summer in support of his recent Cass County album which was his first solo album in 15 years. He'll stop in Lake Tahoe on July 24 during his European and North American tour.

Show time for Henley is at 8:00 p.m.

Presale starts on Thursday, April 7 at 10:00 a.m. with general public tickets available on April 8 at 10:00 a.m.

Washoe Sheriff cybercops nab child predator in Reno

Joshua Larsen, age 36 of Reno, was arrested by members of the Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (I.C.A.C.), on child Sexual Assault and multiple child pornography charges, including Use of a Minor in Producing Pornography.

Law Enforcement became aware of Larsen after a tip was provided to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s “Cybertipline.”

Kudos: Bread and Broth thanks the HEROs volunteers from Harrah's/Harvey's

Bread & Broth would like to thank the employee volunteers of Harrah's and Harvey's who adopted a day of nourishment at the non-profit's weekly Monday evening dinner on March 28.

“We love helping with the great folks at Bread and Broth,” commented volunteer Jacalyn Andrews. “It warms your heart to be involved with serving a hot meal.”

Jacalyn is a Game Supervisor at Caesars’ Stateline casinos and she and her fellow HEROs volunteer crew members had a great time at the Harrah’s/Harvey’s HEROs Adopt A Day dinner.

Cave Rock tunnel extension topic of NDOT community meeting

Construction details of this summer's project at Cave Rock will be revealed during a Lake Tahoe community meeting on Thursday, April 14 in the Zephyr Cove Elementary multipurpose room from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is hosting the public meeting to tell residents about the project that will enhance traveler safety on U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area.

Pet of the Week: Bear

This week's Pet of the Week is Bear, a big German Shepherd/Malamute mix. He is two or three years old and is good with other dogs. Bear would love a forever home where he can play fetch and tug.

Public meetings on transportation changes in Meyers

El Dorado County is proposing roadway and multi-us path improvements for the Meyers community, and they are inviting the public to participate during three different outreach meetings on Friday, April 22.

The proposed changes are meant to make the transportation options more safe and attractive for those living in the area as well those visiting or passing through. One option already mentioned by Caltrans is the addition of a roundabout at the Highway 50/Highway 89 intersection to slow down traffic coming from Echo Summit.

Lake Tahoe road work schedule for April 3-9, 2016

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work is in winter suspension on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8.5-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

USFS seeks public comment on Burke Creek restoration project

The U.S. Forest Service seeks input on their draft environmental assessment for the restoration for the Burke Creek Highway 50 Crossing and Realignment Project.

The first two phases of the proposed project would restore the Burke Creek channel and adjacent marsh, reduce the amount of sediment that flows into nearby Lake Tahoe and reduce the potential for flooding on U.S. Highway 50.

Nice Spring week ahead in South Lake Tahoe; Rain possible next weekend

South Lake Tahoe will see high in the 60s this week, with a chance of rain coming into the Basin by April 8. 2016.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, forecast simulations are coming into better agreement in a transition to a wet pattern starting the end of the upcoming week into next weekend. The Climate Prediction Center’s 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks both agree on this as well.

"Stay and Play Another Day" campaign for South Lake Tahoe tourism

Recreational opportunities in South Lake Tahoe is the focus of a nationwide advertising campaign in hopes of bringing more visitors to the area, and to encourage them to stay an extra day.

"Stay and Play Another Day" is the focus of the commercial that was just released on the cable sports channels of Altitude Sports and Entertainment, American Sports Network and several individual television stations in select markets.

In honor of April Fools Day, here is a reprint of our 2016 story.

Mike Bradford knew the April Fool's Day ad campaign was a hit when people started calling him to complain about Lakeside Inn's plans to turn Rabe Meadow into Lakeside Ranch. People took their rants to social media as well.

The headline read, "Lakeside Inn and Casino returns cattle grazing to historic Lake Shore Meadow." The story that followed outlined the casino's plans to raise prime Angus beef so their restaurant, Latin Soul, could put new meaning to the term, Farm-to-Table.

Tahoe Prospertiy Center awarded for collaborative efforts

The Tahoe Prosperity Center received an award on Thursday, March 31, 2016 from the Placer County Economic Development Board for “Best Collaboration to Encourage a Prosperous, Sustainable and Healthy Lake Tahoe Basin.”

Certificates of recognition were also presented to the Tahoe Prosperity Center from Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, Senators Ted Gaines and Jim Nelson, and Congressma=en Tom McClintock and Douglas LaMalfa.

El Dorado County teen latest victim of counterfeit hydrocodone

An 18-year-old El Dorado Hills resident is the latest victim of a rash of overdoses from pills made to look like the prescription painkiller, Norco.

In Sacramento County, six deaths are attributed to the pills, and the death of county resident George Berry is now the seventh suspected victim. The pills ingested are actually Fentanyl, which is 80 times as potent as morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.

Dr. Amanda Weavil voted Barton's Doctor of the Year

Amanda Weavil, MD collected her third victory this month when she was voted Barton Health’s 2016 Doctor of the Year.

Dr. Weavil is a board-certified OB-GYN for Barton Women’s Health. In early March, she won the Dancing with the Tahoe Stars competition and received the people’s choice award. Now, in honor of national Doctors Day, Barton Health physicians and staff voted Weavil as their favorite physician.

Short and long term foster families needed in South Lake Tahoe

Sierra snowpack ends season at 97% of average

A "Miracle March" never materialized in the Sierra Nevada in 2016 and current snowpack shows that it would have been necessary to get totals above average, something needed to combat the drought in California.

In the last official snow survey of the year at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe, the snow was 58.4 inches deep with a water content of 26 inches, just 97 percent of the long-term average in that location.

EL Dorado County Total Recall, the group behind the recall of all five County Supervisors, failed to turn in any of the signatures needed to bring the recall of Supervisors Sue Novasel and Brian Veerkamp to the voters in November.

Nevada casinos do well in February

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of February, 2016, they show Stateline casinos bringing in $16,173,829, which is up 3.84 percent from the same period in 2015.

For the fiscal year, the South Shore is still below the previous year by 5.46 percent.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, several regions showed double-digit gains, led by the non-Reno areas of Washoe County, which had a gain on 19.71 percent. All of Clark County had a gain on the previous year, led by the downtown and North Las Vegas areas.

South Tahoe High soccer stars to play for LTCC Coyotes

Four South Tahoe High seniors took a big step on Tuesday when they all signed a letter of intent to play soccer for the Lake Tahoe Community College Coyotes.

Natalie Reber, Stacy Vazquez, Alejandra Gutierrez and Kenya Maltese will all be in blue jerseys this fall as they hit the field under the direction of Coach Jeremy Evans.

Distracted driving focus of zero tolerance days in South Lake Tahoe

On April 7 and April 20, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol will be especially vigilant for distracted drivers on local roads as part of a joint effort across the state.

Although the officers' goals are not to write as many citations as possible, sometimes citations are necessary for drivers to understand the importance of focusing on their driving.

Distracted driving is such an important safety issue that April is recognized as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

New parking lot, pathways and corral on tap for Zephyr Cove Resort this summer

Construction is scheduled to begin May 1 in South Lake Tahoe at what is being called the "Zephyr Cove Resort Corral and Bike Path Construction Project." When completed, there will be 1,500 feet of new pathways between the stop light at Zephyr Cove Resort and Warrior Way, new paved parking areas and improved erosion control and water quality areas due to a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

New Stanford coach, South Tahoe's Jerod Haase, promises ‘an attack mentality’

When Jerod Haase played at Kansas, he dived for loose balls so often that somebody at the school created a statistic for it.

He was so upset over the Jayhawks’ 85-82 loss to Arizona in the 1997 NCAA Tournament regional semifinals that he sulked about it long afterward. The source for that information is a former waitress at a Lawrence sports bar called the Yacht Club.

“He was very upset about that game,” the former Mindy Meidinger said. That’s how she and Haase met, and they’ve been married for 17 years.

Dr. Kelly Shanahan retiring after 22 years in South Lake Tahoe

"It was a sign that I need to retire," said Dr. Kelly Shanahan.

Shanahan sat down with me recently, to reflect on her 22 years in South Lake Tahoe, and the almost 10,000 babies she's delivered in her career.

Without putting her office up for sale she received a phone call from a local realtor, asking if she'd like to sell the building that houses her Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health.

The potential buyer came to look at the property, and shortly after, a vacationing doctor called to see if she'd like to sell her practice.

Barton Memorial Hospital receives Four Stars for patient satisfaction

Barton Memorial Hospital was recently awarded a four star rating from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Each Medicare certified acute care hospital across the nation receives a patient perception rating between one and five stars based on patient satisfaction surveys. Of the 298 California hospitals assessed, Barton Hospital ranked in the top 14 percent.
