South Tahoe High grad killed in single car accident near Pope Beach
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 4:38pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and California Highway Patrol continue to investigate a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a South Lake Tahoe teen early Saturday morning.
According to EDSO Lt. Jim Byers, 19-year-old Jillian Pruitt was the lone occupant in a car that collided with a tree on State Route 89 at 3:40 a.m. March 26, 2016.
Byers said the accident is still under investigation and few details are available at this time. He said that circumstance of the crash are making it complex.

April 5, 2016 - 6:00pm "From the Lens of Eleanor Preger," is an exhibition at Sierra Nevada College that includes images from Burning Man 2011-15, and the photographer will talk about her art during the closing reception for the show on April 5. Crimson Rose, Burning Man co-founder, and Maria Partridge, Artist Advocate for the Burning Man Foundation, are both expected to make comments during the evening.
Eleanor Preger's talk will take place in the Ron and Maureen Ashley Community Gallery at the Holman Arts & Media Center on campus from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

NHP in Reno responds to over 75 calls during Monday's storm
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 1:57pmThe Nevada Highway Patrol had a busy day Monday as they dealt with numerous crashes and stuck cars after a "Spring Slider" dumped a foot of snow in many areas in and around Reno.
Between 4:00 a.m. and noon, NHP troopers responded to 25 crashes that did not require medical response, eight crashes that needed ambulances, and over 45 motorists that needed some sort of assist.

South Lake Tahoe man seriously injured in felony hit and run in Meyers
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 7:44amA South Lake Tahoe man was hit by a car on Saturday night, resulting in serious injuries and an arrest for felony hit and run.
Scott Murphy, 26, was walking along the eastbound side of Highway 50, east of Apache Avenue, talking to his girlfriend on the phone at about 9:45 p.m. on March 26 according to the California Highway Patrol. A BMW driven by Roberto Luna, 21, was also heading east and, for unknown reasons, allowed the right front side of his car to hit Murphy. Luna, of San Francisco, Calif., was driving an estimated 50 mph, ten miles above the posted speed limit.

Every year, we are urged to take notice of the chemicals in our lives that are dangerous. While much of the effort is spent on parents of young children, pets are likewise vulnerable to poisoning. In many instances, pets are MORE prone to poisoning, since we may not be wary of foods or plants that we have no problem with but are toxic to animals.

Historic Nevada State Prison to open for tours

The public will soon be able to tour the historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City. Opened in 1862, the prison opened on the site of the Warm Springs Hotel even before the territory became a state. The prison's quarry supplied the materials needed to build the State Capitol.
The Carson City Chamber of Commerce 2016 Leadership Class will offer the prison tours as a fundraiser from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16.
With the legalization of gaming in Nevada, the prison allowed inmates to gamble in the Bull Pen, a casino that was set up in 1932 and closed in 1967.

The building housing South Tahoe Stand-Up Paddle and the bagel shop was sold to local investors in February, 2016. At the moment they are waiting for building permits for the remodeling of the two-story building that will make way for new tenants.
Storm bringing cold temps, wind, some snow; 60s by next weekend
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/26/2016 - 5:46pmEaster Sunday brings with it pleasant temperatures along with a lake wind advisory from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Expect southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Waves on the lake may be 2 to 4 feet with the east and north shore getting the highest ones. Small boats will be prone to capsizing and should remain off the lake until conditions improve.
Things change Sunday night and Monday morning when a slider quickly moves through the Sierra and Western Nevada.

Student arrested at South Tahoe High after bringing a knife to school

"There was no immediate threat to our students thanks to vigilance of school personnel," said STHS Principal Chad Houck.
The student was booked into El Dorado County Jail on a felony charge of bringing a weapon to school. He has since been released. His bail had been set at $10,000 but it is unknown what he posted.
Spring Slider passing through Lake Tahoe late Sunday

Snow accumulations are likely above 5500 feet and possible down to the lowest valleys including Reno and Carson City and could affect their morning commute on Monday.
Daytime high temperatures will drop around 20 degrees between Sunday and Monday, with freezing temperatures possible overnight on Sunday.

The proposal to install a 60-foot-long tunnel extension at Cave Rock this summer is the subject of a public hearing by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
The agency's hearings officer will meet with all interested parties, public included, on the Nevada Department of Transportation's project to create a safer tunnel due to the falling rock and deteriorating hillside on the westbound lanes of Highway 50 entering the tunnel.

More importantly, and most likely the reason for the passionate responses from all involved, the mix also contains the safety of the public.
On March 15, 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe sent a letter to the JPA, stating their intent to pull out of the agency that was created in 2001 to supply ambulance service to the City and the County and a portion of Alpine County.

South Tahoe High grad Jerod Haase is Stanford's new basketball coach

Stanford has hired Jerod Haase as its next head coach, the school announced Friday.
Haase, 41, has been the head coach at UAB the past four seasons. He was 54-46 heading into this season, but the Blazers went 26-7 in 2015-16 and won the Conference USA regular-season title before falling in the conference tournament.

Jail inmates create colorful Easter eggs for South Lake Tahoe kids
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/24/2016 - 4:38pmCan you imagine dying 4,000 eggs for your family's Easter egg hunt? Probably not as many of us may have had enough after two dozen, but that is exactly what local inmates are tasked with.
Each year, the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club hosts a community egg hunt at Lake Tahoe Community College, and for the last ten years the inmates at the El Dorado County Jail have been coloring the hard boiled eggs for the event.
Normally the kitchen crew at the jail both boils the eggs and colors them, but due to a staffing shortage at the jail they could only color them.

Mobile dental care team treating dozens of students at South Tahoe High

Dr. Azeem Qureshi, DDS, Hygienist Isabel Uribe and Dental Assistant Nancy Pineda saw 14 students on Wednesday, and are expected to see another 25 on Thursday.

Transportation projects that improve infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians also help improve air and water quality, revitalize the economy, improve public health, and enhance recreation opportunities.

There are many needs, as most residents are aware, and the City is going to listen to the public to see where efforts should be concentrated.
"We want to measure community opinions regarding proposed funding solutions for investing in streets, roads, parks and recreation as well as other community priorities," said City Manager Nancy Kerry.

Latest storm adds needed water to Lake Tahoe and California
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/23/2016 - 7:56amThe latest storms to hit the Sierra and Lake Tahoe kept wter content in the snowpack close to average, with some areas of California going above average in the precipitation they've received.
Officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be making their last monthly snowpack measurement near Sierra-at-Tahoe next week, but electronic readings taken March 22, 2016 show the snowpack is at 92 percent of average.
Most of the ski resorts around the lake, while still below average snowpack, are experiencing the best measured snow in a few years.
TTD adds new buses and scheduling system in South Lake Tahoe

Suspects in South Lake Tahoe murder plead not guilty

Tristan Batten, 18, and Harvest Davidson, 20, both entered a not guilty plea.
El Dorado Savings in Georgetown robbed at gunpoint

The suspect is identified as being a white male adult, was wearing blue jeans, blue rain coat and a San Francisco 49ers ball cap. He was armed with a black pistol and seen leaving the area in a red Dodge Durango, most likely a 2004-09 model.
El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies, detectives and CSI personnel, along with allied law enforcement, responded to the bank and interviewed numerous employees, customers and witnesses.

Tahoe Chamber moves Sample the Sierra event to September 17

September 17, 2016 (All day) Sample the Sierra, the annual event in South Lake Tahoe that highlights the talent of the Sierra Nevada via food, wine, beer, spirits, produce and art has moved from their normal Labor Day weekend date.
This year, the Tahoe Chamber sponsored event has moved to Saturday, September 17 at Bijou Community Park from noon to 5:00 p.m.
