1960's Green Lantern evolves into modern Coachman Hotel
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/22/2016 - 9:04amA multi-million dollar remodel of the old Green Lantern Motel in South Lake Tahoe has been completed, and emerging out of the dust is the new and trendy Coachman Hotel.
Doors will open to the public on Wednesday, March 23.
The new owners of the hotel, Peter and Justin Watzka, bring with them years of hotel and hospitality management. Peter was the Executive VP of Ritz-Carlton Destination Club and VP of Marketing for Marriott Vacation Club International, while Justin was previously a director with Ritz-Carlton and Marriott Vacation Clubs in Florida and Asia.
Series of earthquakes near shores of Walker Lake
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/22/2016 - 7:08amThe Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno reports a series of small aftershocks after a 4.1 earthquake at 3:00 a.m. at Walker Lake, 12 miles northwest of the town of Hawthorne. It was located 6.76 miles under the surface.
This one followed a series of over 100 small earthquakes that surrounded a 4.3 last week and a 3.1 quake on Monday morning.
Since the early morning quake Tuesday there have been seven smaller ones, the largest of which measured 2.8 at the UNR lab.

Schools in South Lake Tahoe are open today with bus and start times on schedule.
Incline High School is on a two-hour delay.

Julie Pardysz was relocating to Colorado and had the business up for sale. The Tot Spot was on the verge of having to close as no buyers were coming forward. At the last minute, Jen and Chris Bloch made an offer to keep the doors open.

The Tahoe Douglas Firefighter's Association will host their annual Tot Egg Hunt at Kahle Community Center on Friday, March 25 at 11:00 a.m. for kids ages 0 to 6. The Easter Bunny will be hiding eggs outside and the kids can climb on fire trucks during the event. Inside there will be a bounce house, indoor playground and refreshments. Bring a basket to collect eggs and a camera. Gym is open until 1:00 p.m.

Lake Tahoe bike path carries high construction cost
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/20/2016 - 8:27pmVisitors to Lake Tahoe’s east shore could soon have a new bike path linking upscale Incline Village to Nevada’s Sand Harbor State Park, but the price tag might induce sticker shock: $12.5 million for the 3-mile project.
Yes, that is more than $4 million a mile in taxpayer dollars for a 10-foot-wide bike path traveling just about 16,000 feet along the picturesque mountain lake.
Not to mention another $7 million to $9 million that the Nevada Transportation Department plans to spend in state gas taxes in conjunction with the project on related environmental and safety needs.
Jamie Anderson wins overall 2016 freestyle snowboarding title
Submitted by paula on Sun, 03/20/2016 - 8:14pmThe final snowboard FIS World Cup slopestyle event took place Sunday in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, and Jamie Anderson from Meyers won the crystal globe award for women’s snowboard slopestyle despite skipping the final event of the season. Anderson also claimed the crystal globe for overall freestyle snowboarding.
On the men's side, Chris Corning (Arvada, CO) hit the podium with a second-place finish, and secured the overall World Cup Slopestyle title.
Contest for Nevada high school students to design new welcome signs

In a contest presented by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Governor Brian Sandoval’s office, the Department of Education and the Department of Transportation, high school student designers have been called upon to create the new signs.
Time is running out and all entries need to be submitted by March 25, 2016.

A) Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High School and Rocky Ridge Properties, 35 acres of hand piles to be burned by California State Parks starting 3/21/16.

Fight over Yosemite names escalates

The agency has asked a federal trademark board to cancel trademarks obtained by the company that previously ran the park’s hotels, restaurants and outdoor activities, the Sacramento Bee reported Friday. Those trademarks include the name, “The Ahwahnee,” which was used on a luxurious stone and timber hotel with stunning views of the park’s fabled granite peaks, and “Curry Village,” a woodsy family-friendly lodging complex.
STAR looking for volunteers in El Dorado County

STAR is comprised of senior citizens who are utilized to enhance vital crime prevention services in the community. The STARs conduct patrols in specially marked STAR vehicles, functioning as the eyes and ears of the Sheriff’s Department, reporting any suspicious activity observed. The S.T.A.R. Program is a Crime Prevention Program exercising proactive law enforcement principles.

Judge hands down sentence to man who killed bear in South Lake Tahoe

Gilbert Alan Wetenkamp pleaded no contest on March 11, 2016 to the misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking of a bear.

His owners says he is very friendly and loved.

SnowGlobe charges and fire code change voted on at SLT City Council meeting
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 6:51pmThe South Lake Tahoe Fire Code has changed, much to the appreciation of both homeowners and contractors who had to deal with different codes, depending on the location of the home, City or in the County.
The council voted to remove restrictions on the fire sprinkler code (Chapter 5.20) to be more in line with Lake Valley Fire District. The City's stricter code confused contractors who build houses in the city, and in the county, and it was also found to be cost prohibitive for homeowners wishing to remodel.
Full closure of Highway 50 in El Dorado Hills early Sunday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 5:46pmOn Sunday, March 20, the Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Closures are as follows:

Greenway shared use trail in South Lake Tahoe gets approval

The Food Bank of El Dorado County will be back in South Lake Tahoe at the American Legion Hall on Wednesday, March 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to distribute food to those in need of emergency supplemental groceries.
They are also looking for volunteers from the community to assist from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers will be assisting in handing out food and signing people in. Conservancy Board awards $7 million in Proposition 1 grants
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/17/2016 - 3:24pmOn Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded more than $7 million for seven watershed restoration and forest health projects around the lake. Thirteen different applicants submitted 32 grant requests totaling $30 million, but with just $13,950,000 to give out, it was a very competitive process.
The money comes from Proposition 1, the $7.545 billion water bond approved overwhelmingly by California voters in November 2014. It was divided around the state to agencies like the Conservancy for water supply infrastructure projects.

Frank Sinatra Jr, dies, was just 19 when kidnapped from Harrah's Tahoe in 1963
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/16/2016 - 9:30pmFrank Sinatra Jr., the son of the legendary entertainer who also had a long musical career of his own, died Wednesday at a Daytona Beach, Florida hospital. He was 72.
Sinatra had been on his "Sinatra Sings Sinatra" tour and was scheduled to perform at the Peabody Auditorium on Wednesday. The venue posted an announcement in social media that the singer had taken ill.
Three women working for escort service arrested in Stateline sting

The prostituted women, 23-year-old Claudia Bernal, Brenda Fee, 51, and 30-year-old Monique Lopez were arrested after DCSET was investigating reports of prostitution in the Stateline casino core. All three women were associated with an unnamed escort service.

South Lake Tahoe students get minimum day for Amgen Tour

Due to the rolling lane closures at approximately the same time schools are let out, students will get a minimum day on Thursday, May 19, 2016.
Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top male and female cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe.

Court rejects Jaycee Lee Dugard's lawsuit against the government
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/16/2016 - 10:15amThe federal government cannot be held responsible for kidnapping survivor Jaycee Dugard's 1991 abduction and subsequent 18 years in captivity, an appeals court said Tuesday.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Dugard's lawsuit alleging federal parole officials should have revoked her abductor's parole well before he kidnapped her, but failed to do their jobs.
