Mosquito Fire grows to almost 30,000 acres, moving toward 2014 King Fire scar

UPDATE 9 p.m. Friday: The Mosquito Fire is still being mapped at 29,585 acres with not many updates from fire officials all afternoon and evening. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office held a town hall meeting this evening. Fire officials said with no wind on Friday and low humidity there was no large fire growth and no huge columns of smoke. The inversion layer prevented the fire from growing at an extreme rate as it did on Thursday. The heavy smoke prevented fixed-wing aircraft from dropping retardant Friday but helicopters were able to get in.

Schools open and classes on schedule for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the air quality hovering in the unhealthy range to unhealthy range, officials with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District have been monitoring it.

"As we monitor the air quality, it is high, yet it is holding below 300 in most areas. Schools will be open today, Friday, September 9th on normal schedules. We will continue to monitor throughout the day and provide updates as necessary," said the District on social media Friday morning.

Bike the West cancels this weekend's America's Most Beautiful Tour De Tahoe due to smoke from Mosquito Fire

Bike the West has been monitoring the Mosquito Fire burning to the west of Lake Tahoe and came to the difficult decision on Thursday to cancel the 2022 America's Most Beautiful Tour De Tahoe. They had been hoping to get back on track after COVID and the 2021 Tamarack and Caldor fires.

With cycling being a heavy cardio activity, the bad air quality from the fire would hamper riders, said organizer Curtis Fong. The Mosquito Fire grew to over 13,000 acres on September 8, 5,000 of those acres burning in under two hours. There is no containment at this time.

Council approves Lake Tahoe Airport hangar taxilane project

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Aiport is getting a new taxi lane in front of the hangars, one of many deferred maintenance projects the City of South Lake Tahoe has been addressing.

The cost will be about $414,000.

Prior to the City Council's approval on Tuesday, there was some question from the public about the expense of a new taxi lane instead of the funds being used on needed road repairs.

Air quality around Lake Tahoe worsens as Mosquito Fire grows

UPDATE 7 p.m Thursday: Fire officials have updated the acreage burned to 13,705 acres. The fire made a 5,000-acre run today in a matter of 2-3 hours, working into El Dorado County. In a community meeting tonight, they joined Placer County officials to update the public on the status of the Mosquito Fire. Volcanoville has been impacted, according to CAL FIRE.

Several volunteer projects during Markleeville Creek Day

A special thank you to the staff at Lake Tahoe Golf Course for collecting broken clubs and grips that will be used when teaching visually impaired youth.

Supply issues have left some blind and visually impaired students without white canes to practice mobility skills to travel safely and independently. Traditional white canes can be lost or broken easily as students are learning this important skill. Golf club shafts are the perfect temporary substitute to keep lessons on track until a new cane arrives.

Mosquito Fire west of Lake Tahoe prompts evacuations

UPDATE 9:00 a.m. Thursday: The Mosquito Fire burned actively overnight and is now 6,870 acres in size, with no containment. It is burning near Oxbow Reservoir, 3 miles east of Foresthill, in brush and timber in very steep and rugged terrain. The fire is under unified command with the US Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and Placer County Sheriff.

First veterans "Stand Down" to be held in South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Women's Community Fund membership drive includes monthly wine tasting and coffee events

The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) is holding its first wine tasting membership event on Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Maggie's (inside the new Desolation Hotel.

The group will be holding a Wine Evening on the first Wednesday of each month in different locations, then a Coffee Morning on the third Wednesday of each month, also in different locations.

Fundraiser opened for baby Warren Olivares as family faces mounting expenses

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two-month-old Warren Matthew Olivares has had a challenge since being born at 35 weeks on July 6, and friends have started a Go Fund Me fundraising account to help with the South Lake Tahoe family's medical expenses.

Warren's mom Tess had been on bed rest since going into labor at 23 weeks. When he was born, his first day of life was filled with lots of love and snuggles. Shortly after birth, Warren started to experience glucose problems, so he was started on an IV and was stabilized.

Free kids Pumpkin Run held during Lake Tahoe Marathon

Free Pumpkin Run for kids returns during the 27th annual Lake Tahoe Marathon this fall. The Optimist Club of Lake Tahoe is sponsoring the event for kids ages 1-10 on Sunday, October 16, 2022 while the marathon runs October 14-16.

Once again the Optimist Club of Lake Tahoe is sponsoring Free Pumpkin Runs for kids ages 1-10. Every participant gets a pumpkin if preregistered! The race starts at 4081 Lakeshore Blvd. at Lakeside Beach, South Lake Tahoe.

Kudos: Rasmussen Family and Friends host B&B Adopt A Day of Nourishment

Serving a hot, nutritious dinner every Monday to the 80-90 individuals who attend the Bread & Broth (B&B) meal at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall requires the combined efforts of over 25 volunteers weekly. South Tahoe High School Spirit Team for A Day for grades TK-8

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Have some budding cheerleaders and dancers in your household? If so, check out the South Tahoe High School Spirit Team For A Day event on Saturday, September 17.

All kids, in grades TK-8th, are invited to join the South Tahoe High School (STHS) spirit team, spend the day learning cheers and a halftime routine, then perform at the varsity football game at 7 p.m. that evening.

Firefighters recognized during Keith Urban concert at Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - Keith Urban, Harveys Lake Tahoe, and Another Planet Entertainment recognized several firefighters this week who helped protect Lake Tahoe when the Caldor Fire bore down in 2021. Urban met with 25 service personnel from different agencies and their guests before his concert on Thursday, September 1.

"He was so gracious to invite firefighters who fought the Caldor Fire to be recognized at this concert," said South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Captain Kim George on social media. "An amazing experience."

Funding available for wildfire at-risk communities from USFS

The USDA Forest Service is accepting applications for the new Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) program until October 7, 2022.

While there are many initiatives on reducing wildfire risk to federal lands, the CWDG program is focused on non-federal lands and will provide funding to communities, Indian Tribes, State forestry agencies, and non-profit organizations that will be critical partners in helping communities reduce their wildfire risk and become more fire adapted.  

History of Sierra-at-Tahoe author to present at next Lake Tahoe Historical Society Fireside Chat

Author Christopher C. Couper will be featured at the next Lake Tahoe Historical Society Fireside Chat on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the historic Camp Richardson Hotel. Couper will be sharing his new book, From Ranch to Resort: The History of Sierra-at-Tahoe. The book is packed full of the ski resort's 75-year history, from its conception as Sierra Ski Ranch until now, the rebirth of Sierra-at-Tahoe after the Caldor Fire took out much of its tree-lined terrain.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is offering the program for free, and the public is invited.

Hot-ember continues through the week - "normal" temperatures on horizon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A robust high-pressure system remains parked over Utah, bringing record, or near-record, high temperatures throughout the West. Temperatures above 100 degrees in lower elevations and low 90s at upper elevations will continue producing moderate to high heat-health impacts this week, with Tuesday being the hottest day in many areas. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible along the eastern Sierra starting Monday, spreading north by midweek.

Voters to decide outcome of Measure K - $107M in bonds for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Voters will find Measure K on their ballots on November 8, a bond measure to raise $107M to upgrade aging facilities in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD).

If passed by at least 55 percent of the voters, Measure K will:

- Safety improvements to ensure safe school sites
- Repairing/replacing leaky roofs
- Updating inadequate electrical systems
- Replacing outdated heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems
- Making health, safety, and handicapped accessibility improvements
- Replacing deteriorating plumbing systems

Keith Urban thrills Lake Tahoe audiences

STATELINE, Nev. - Keith Urban stopped by Lake Tahoe with his Speed of Now World Tour for two shows this week. He filled the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on Thursday and Friday, September 1 and 2.

His high-energy blend of country and rock music keep the fans on their feet, especially when he went into the audience, stopping by the bleachers for a close-up song and guitar giveaway. It was non-stop Urban energy for almost three hours.

City of South Lake Tahoe to begin fuels reduction and flight safety project around airport

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe is planning some hazardous fuels reduction and flight path safety work on the land surrounding the airport to commence after Labor Day. Newly minted airport manager John Dickinson, who brings extensive experience in FAA regulations and safety management, flagged an opportunity to partner with CalFire.

First turbidity curtains being removed after successful Tahoe Keys test results

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Herbicide levels are now at non-detect levels in Area B of the Tahoe Keys, allowing the turbidity curtains to be lifted and those waterways to be used for the first time since the Control Methods Test (CMT) started May 25.

El Dorado County Planning Commission to hold hearings on two Lake Tahoe cannabis businesses

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The unincorporated area of El Dorado County at Lake Tahoe does not currently have any cannabis storefronts but that is about to change. On the Planning Commission's agenda for Sept. 8 are two cannabis business hearings for permits.

One is for a Commercial Cannabis Use Permit for a retail storefront for the sale of cannabis goods for medicinal and adult-use recreational at 2140 US-50, near the intersection with Jewell Road.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra art auction to support Mt. Tallac High School

The buses are rolling. School is back in session in South Lake Tahoe and Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) is rolling out a fall fundraiser, an online art auction, titled “An Artful Way to Support Mt. Tallac High School Youth.” All sales, 100 percent, go directly to support Mt. Tallac High School. 14th annual Ebbetts Pass Scenic Celebration "2022 Hermitfest West"

USFS announces concession opportunities for Lake Tahoe resorts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is soliciting proposals for three separate Lake Tahoe concession resort and campground special use permits. The current permits at Camp Richardson, Meeks Bay, and Zephyr Cove expire in 2023.

New permits will be issued for 20-year terms and may be extended an additional 10 years depending on the nature of investment and operations in the successful proposals.

Forest Service and Barton Health team up for community wellness outings for Vitamin (N)ature

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) are collaborating to enhance wellness opportunities for the Lake Tahoe community, reigniting Vitamin (N)ature programs. Time in nature is proven to be good for health, and this partnership promotes nature as medicine, utilizing the benefits of public land to provide opportunities for better mental and physical health, including improved fitness, meaningful social interaction, decreased stress, and increased sense of purpose.

DEA warns of rainbow-colored fentanyl used to target youth

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is advising the public of an alarming emerging trend of colorful fentanyl available across the United States. In August 2022, DEA and its law enforcement partners seized brightly-colored fentanyl and fentanyl pills in 18 states. Dubbed “rainbow fentanyl,” this trend appears to be a new method used by drug cartels to sell highly addictive and potentially deadly fentanyl made to look like candy to children and young people.
