August 11 @ 10:00 AM: Learn to Water Color-Wild Flower Walk @ Carson Pass. Come along and learn about painting the wildflowers in the forest. All paper, paints, and materials are supplied, but each participant should carry their own. A mile wander through the forest and a couple of hours dabbing paint on paper! This activity is geared to beginning and intermediate art enthusiasts who are willing to hike a little and paint a little. All participants will leave with their artwork! This is a three-hour event. Meet at the Carson Pass Information Station on CA Hwy 88.

Series of interpretive hikes and events planned at Carson Pass Information Station

The Carson Pass Information Station is wrapping up the summer season with a series of activities for youth and adults including Junior Ranger hikes, wildflower and watercolor painting hikes, historical hikes, and naturalist hikes including birds, geology, and trees. All are free but spaces must be reserved by calling 209.258.8606. There is a parking fee of $5 per day.

Markleeville businesses and residents: "We need help now!"

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. - When rain fell over the Tamarack Fire burn scar last week, causing the mud to flow down roads and hills, it did much more than wash out SR-89, the main artery between Markleeville and the rest of Alpine County.

It took with it the hopes to finally have a disaster-free summer where businesses could end their busy season on a positive note.

Road Beat - 2022 Acura MDX Type S review: better, but not the best

What is it?

Acura’s venerable MDX SUV turned up a couple of clicks after receiving the ‘Type S’ treatment. Don’t overthink Type S, though, as it’s not the AMG equivalent for Acura (at least not yet, where’s the Type R, Acura?), yet this does bring a raft of hardware and tuning changes to make the most sporting Acura SUV ever. On paper, this new MDX Type S promises to be a more engaging and sporting SUV in their lineup to keep things interesting and hopefully fend off new and updated rivals in the luxury three-row SUV segment.

NHL Vegas Golden Knights Rink Tour stopping in South Lake Tahoe

The Las Vegas Golden Knights will be stopping by the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena for the first leg of their Summer Rink Tours on August 15 at 10 a.m.
They are encouraging all Golden Knights hockey fans to make those "Welcome Signs" and show up early to greet Chance, the Las Vegas Golden Knights Mascot along with one or two of the NHL Vegas Golden Knights players. The tour bus will be parked in the rink parking lot so come down, and snap some pictures with Chance and the bus. There will be pre-autographed handouts for those in attendance.

One arrested for arson and other charges after South Lake Tahoe house fire

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and vandalism after a fire broke out at his home near the corner of Larch and Figueroa Saturday night.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was dispatched to the home at 8:31 p.m. on August 6. Upon arrival, they found the home fully involved with fire, with flames along the rear of the home and heavy smoke at the front, according to Battalion Chief Tyler Jack.

Chance of monsoon moisture and isolated thunderstorms to start off week at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Another surge of monsoon moisture will yield increased thunderstorm chances through Wednesday, with the potential for heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and strong outflow winds through the region.

Another round of heavy rains from these storms is possible with simulations indicating the potential for up to 1 inch per hour from any storms that develop. There`s even some risk of up to 2 inches per hour on Tuesday. This would result in renewed flash flooding threats, especially on recent burn scars such as the Tamarack, Caldor, and Dixie.

Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program

Making it the largest tournament in its 38 years, 270 players recently participated in the annual Hersh Herschman Memorial Tahoe Classic at Zephyr Cove Park. The four-day annual event that ended July 24 brought even more people to our area for the fun tennis competition.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The money raised from the event, including a silent auction and raffle, will help to continue to provide the only organized recreational tennis, with a growing kids program, on the South Shore.

Trip to Green project implemented on US-50 through Placerville - no red lights on highway on selected dates

This weekend is the launch of a new program in Placerville along US-50, Trip to Green. As any traveler knows, traffic can get backed up in Placerville and in an effort to alleviate it, Trip to Green was created. For three weekends this fall, traffic signals on both eastbound and westbound US 50 through the City of Placerville will be set to stay green so that traffic may flow freely.

Interstate 80 travel delays through Truckee anticipated for next four months

TRUCKEE – Travel delays are continuing through November on Interstate 80 (I-80) in Truckee for roadway construction activities.

Motorists are advised to expect typical delays of 15 to 20 minutes when traveling through the work zones on weekdays. However, delays of 25 to 30 minutes are common on Thursday afternoons due to increased weekend travel levels.

Public encouraged to support Markleeville businesses as they try to survive with road closures

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - After flooding closed the main route into Markleeville this week, the county economic official is asking the public to visit and support their businesses as they need support. With the closure of Highway 89 from Turtle Rock Park to Markleeville, businesses in Markleeville can be accessed over Monitor Pass (SR-89) and Ebbetts Pass (CA-4).

Toxic algal mat alert signage posted at General Creek trailhead on west shore

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A toxic algae mat alert sign has been posted at General Creek on the west shore after an algal mat sample collected by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) triggered a recommendation to post the signage.

The level of toxins measured in the dry weight of the algal mat material collected was enough for CDFW to post signage at the General Creek trailhead and other access points to alert recreators and dog walkers about the potential health risks.

Three leadership changes for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has made some leadership changes for the 2022-23 school year.

Manuel Sanchez, former principal at South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), has taken a new role as an administrator on a special assignment for the upcoming year. He will be supporting LTUSD with grant writing, English Learners support, and human resources needs.

Taking his spot at STMS is Cindy Martinez, the former principal at Bijou Community School. The District is looking forward to her bringing the same high-quality leadership to the middle school.

Stings and sweeps by the Contractors State License Board results in 142 legal actions, including South Lake Tahoe

A series of statewide stings and sweeps conducted by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) identified unlicensed activity in the California construction industry, putting consumers at risk.

During the three undercover sting and sweep operations in South Lake Tahoe, Salinas, and Redding, 142 legal actions were taken, primarily for unlicensed and uninsured practices.

From June 6 to 24, 2022, CSLB partnered with local law enforcement in those operations to target unlicensed contractors, with investigators contacting the suspects through their advertisements.

Town of Truckee closes the funding gap for Donner Lake monitoring project

TRUCKEE, Calif. - Clean Up The Lake’s mission to fight against plastic and all forms of pollution has caught the attention of local businesses and foundations; Martis Fund, Tahoe Mountain Resorts Foundation, Truckee Tahoe Lumber Company, and the Parasol Community Foundation who have become major partners on the Donner Lake Monitoring Project. The Town of Truckee has just joined this group as the final partner for this year’s efforts led by Clean Up The Lake on Donner Lake.

Alpine County experiencing debris flows, road closures due to heavy rain in area

August 4 UPDATE: Due to large-scale rain events in Eastern Alpine County, the Alpine County Unified Command was notified by the California Department of Transportation that Highway 89 will be closed to all traffic from Turtle Rock Park to Markleeville until further notice. Access to Markleeville will be through Monitor Pass for residents. At this time, the County is asking all visitors to avoid the area.

Alpine County Unified Command is prepositioning public safety assets in Markleeville in anticipation of additional rain events and potential flooding.

Lisa Maloff, the Angel of Tahoe ~ 1929 - 2022

On the morning of Thursday, July 28, 2022, Lisa Maloff peacefully passed away at home with loved ones by her side, holding her hands. Known as “The Angel of Tahoe,” news quickly spread through town and the city of South
Lake Tahoe lowered flags to half-mast in her honor and bouquets of pink carnations appeared throughout the town in her memory.

Flash Flood Warning for areas south and east of Lake Tahoe

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening, prompting Douglas County officials to issue a Flash Flood Warning.

Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding of low-lying areas and debris flows in and near recent burn scars, mainly the Caldor, Numbers, Tamarack, Mountain View, Slink, and Boot fire areas. Also at risk are areas of steep terrain and poor drainage south of US-50.

Wildfire mitigation efforts bring helicopter operations to Fallen Leaf Lake area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Liberty Utilities will be continuing its wildfire mitigation efforts with a project in the Fallen Leaf Lake area on Saturday, August 6.

Helicopter operations will be conducted between the Taylor Creek Snopark and the Fallen Leaf Lake Marina area, requiring the closure of Fallen Leaf Road between Tahoe Mountain Road and Lily Lake for periods between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Douglas County Commissioners Tarkanian and Gardner at Casey's for pre-board meeting

Senators ask Biden Administration to reestablish Lake Tahoe Federal Advisory Committee, address LTBMU staffing Issues

The senators from California and Nevada wrote a letter to the Biden administration on Tuesday, asking them to reestablish the Lake Tahoe Basin Federal Advisory Committee (LTBFAC). In that letter, Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) also raised concerns about recruiting and retaining senior leadership at the Forest Service for Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU).

In 2011, Bread & Broth implemented its Monday Meal “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” (AAD) program. Over the past 12 years, many local individuals, families, organizations, and businesses have taken the opportunity to financially support a Monday dinner and send AAD crew volunteers to help the B&B volunteers with the meal’s setup, serving, and cleanup. Public meeting in South Lake Tahoe Thursday on El Dorado County Sheriff's OES emergency plan updates

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office of Emergency Services (OES) is holding a series of public presentations regarding the 2022 updates for the El Dorado County Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).

A general overview of the plan will be presented and the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback at the Lake Tahoe Airport on Thursday, August 4 at 7 p.m. The airport is located at 1901 Lisa Maloff Way, South Lake Tahoe.

Fires break out in Douglas County as thunderstorm cell passes through

9 p.m. updates: Forward progress on the Lebo Fire was stopped this evening at 6:45 p.m. Units from East Fork Fire returned from the fire as water tenders stayed on the scene to assist units from BLM and USFS with mop-up. The final size is estimated to be 27.5 acres.

Down at the fire near Holbrook Junction, crews were able to knock it down quickly and it never grew much beyond .25 acres. Some crews are staying on the scene for mop-up.

Outdoor presentation of "Mailman of the Sierra" Snowshoe Thompson at Taylor Creek

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 20 years, between 1856 and 1876, the legendary Snowshoe Thompson delivered mail between Placerville and Genoa (and for a time, Virginia City). He did it by the Norweigan version of snowshoes, looking like very long cross-country skis. It took him three days on this eastward journey, two days back to Placerville, carrying on his back a 60-100 pound package of mail.

The U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor's Center will host an evening with John "Snowshoe" Thompson on Friday, August 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in their Lake of the Sky amphitheater.

Local man spends hours treading water in Lake Tahoe before being rescued

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 19-year-old man was pulled from Lake Tahoe Friday night after spending about three hours treading water before being rescued.

At 8:17 p.m. on Friday, July 29, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue was called by the manager of Timber Cove Marina to assist with a water rescue on the lake. Tahoe Douglas Fire boat crews were also called to assist along with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

Herman Marty ~ 1943 - 2022

Herman Marty passed away peacefully on July 25, 2022.

He was born on May 13, 1943, in the tiny mountain village of Alpthal, Switzerland. He emigrated to the United States in 1970 and found his life-long home in South Lake Tahoe until his passing.

As a carpenter, he built many homes in Lake Tahoe, including the one he lived in with his wife and two daughters. He also built homes in Carson City, San Francisco, and Oregon. Those who knew him will always remember his Swiss style of craftsmanship — everything had to be exact. He was the ultimate perfectionist.

Live at Lakeview presents it’s 90th free show in South Lake Tahoe

Wetter and cooler week ahead for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a more active pattern over the next week as monsoonal moisture streams into the region. Showers and thunderstorms will be capable of gusty outflow winds, and lightning, with possible heavy rain. Temperatures will cool a bit but it will feel more humid, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
