Road controls continue around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the Lake Tahoe Basin shovels out the feet of snow from their driveways, road crews are busy removing snow to allow for easier and safer movement.

Heavenly is reported 68" of new snow over the last 48 hours.

Sierra-at-Tahoe reports 50"-78" over the last 7 days.

Kirkwood reports 48" of snow in the last 48 hours.

Palisades Tahoe reports 69" of new snow over the last 7 days.

Diamond Peaks reports 42" of snow from the latest storm.

There are still road controls on all major area highways.

NV Energy and Liberty Utilities report some continued outages

NV Energy reports 1,062 customers at Lake Tahoe between Stateline and Glenbrook still do not have power. At this time they expect restoral by 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Liberty Utilities reports 6.050 customers of theirs around Lake Tahoe remain without power as well, with expected restoral by noon Monday. Most of the outages are on the South Shore but there are areas around Fallen Leaf Lake, Kings Beach, and a couple of other pockets still out as well.

LTCC, DCSO, TTUSD among school closures or delays on Monday around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to some continued power issues and snow removal after the weekend's storm, some schools are closed.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District schools are closed.

Lake Tahoe Community College's campus will be closed on Monday, December 12, due to widespread power outages in the area. Monday's final exams will be rescheduled, and students will be notified by their instructors.

Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District schools are closed.

Winter weather warning continue around Lake Tahoe as crews work on restoring power/clearing roads

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe is under a Winter Storm Warning until 4 a.m. Monday. Even though the heaviest snowfall is most likely over, another 3-5" of snow is expected at lake level in South Lake Tahoe during the day Sunday. A High Avalanche Warning is in place for the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Over 13,000 Liberty Utilities customers without power around Lake Tahoe, over 1400 without in NV Energy area

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A large portion of Liberty Utilities customers on the South Shore, and some spread around Lake Tahoe are without power Sunday morning.

Most were restored by 1:30 a.m. this morning, but it was short-lived with power going out again after 5 a.m.

Crews are working to get the power restored and, according to the outage website, they hope the power is up by 8 a.m., after that for Portala and North Shore.

SATURDAY 10 PM UPDATE: A few more areas of South Lake Tahoe are added to the list of those without power. Some areas of Stateline, Al Tahoe. and Tahoe Sierra are also without electricity. 6577 Liberty Utilities customers are without power.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavy snow Saturday night is not only making driving a miserable experience through the Sierra, but it has also led to power outages for over 5,000 customers in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers area.

Stolen car chase ends in South Lake Tahoe with one arrested

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An Incline Village, Nev. man was arrested Thursday night after a stolen car chase that went through Washoe County, Douglas County, and ended in South Lake Tahoe.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) called South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) to alert them just before 7:30 p.m. on December 8 that they were inbound into the city limits in pursuit of a stolen vehicle, a 1999 Expedition. SLTPD went to Stateline to put out spike strips on the highway but missed the car that was going at a reported 90 mph.

New Lakeview Express officially opens at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe officially cut the ribbon on its new Lakeview Express chairlift on Thursday.

The $7.5M Lakeview zone project was the largest capital improvement project in the resort’s history and changes the way skiers and riders experience the mountain. Lakeview Express caters to low-level and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and the new Lakeside trail offers expansive views of Lake Tahoe. It is the preferred route to access the popular Around the World trail.

Highway over Monitor Pass joins Ebbetts, Sonora and Tioga passes and closes for winter

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has closed State Route 89/Monitor Pass between Route 4 in Alpine County and U.S. 395 in Mono
County for the winter season.

Monitor Pass has been closed since November 28 due to snow, but on Thursday Caltrans extended the closure through the winter season.

Route-4/Ebbetts Pass, Route-108/Sonora Pass, and Route 120/Tioga Pass also are closed for the winter season.

The recent storms, and accumulation of snow, make the seasonal closures necessary for the safety of motorists and Caltrans crews.

Tahoe Paradise Park seeks proposals for 2023 Music in the Park summer series in South Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Paradise Park, otherwise known as Tahoe Paradise Recreations & Park District (TPRPD) in Meyers is seeking an event vendor to assist with their long-running Friday night music summer series program in 2023 and has published a Request For Proposals (RFP) for interested parties.

TPRPD prefers Music-in-the-Park (MITP) events to have a similar 'look & feel' to past MITP events. For this RFP the Park prefers to work with businesses and contractors located within a one-hour drive of the park site, to further support the economy of our region.

Incoming storm upgraded to Winter Storm Warning - possible two feet of snow at lake level

FRIDAY UPDATE 9AM: The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has updated the expected storm totals for Lake Tahoe, but they still expect a major winter storm. The new total at lake level is forecast to be more like 12"-22" though Reno forecasters expect the higher number at this time. It will still be a major winter storm but the upper-level low came down offshore instead of over land and resulted in more push into Mono County, but Tahoe will still be impacted. Things will still fluctuate over the Sierra as the storm begins to enter the region.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless working through challenges in getting 3rd property open

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the State of California awarded the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) $9,576,000 in 2020 to help with their goal of ending homelessness in South Lake Tahoe, it seemed like a great solution for the community. The funds were used to purchase the Red Lodge, El Nido Motel, and Bear's Den motels.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra presents check to Mt. Tallac High School

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sandy Williams was a Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) member and spent countless hours volunteering in the South Lake Tahoe community, much of that time spent helping at Mt. Tallac High School.

Upon her passing in 2019, Sandy's husband Keith donated all of his art to the SITS club to be used to raise funds for use at Mt. Tallac, the center of Sandy's heart and passion.

City council Tuesday: New city council members seated, new mayor selected and possible garbage rate increase

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless seeks community support in keeping people warm this winter

As our Tahoe winter settles in with snow and frigid temperatures, most residents retreat to the inside for activities, comforts, and warm beds in a place we call home. Our South Shore community has been able to sleep better knowing that our homeless population has this option as well. This winter season marks the seventh anniversary of the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) providing warm beds to the most vulnerable in our community.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Ice Arena will be conducting a series of "Learn to Skate" sessions starting Saturday, December 10 at 10:45 a.m. These sessions are geared towards children aged 4 - 10 who would like to learn the basic fundamentals of ice skating.

The first session on the 10th is "FREE" and all other sessions are $10 and pay-as-you-go. The sessions will focus on balance, learning how to fall, getting back up, strides, and fun, fun, fun. All sessions are for children only.

Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe Friday night to Sunday night: Can you measure in feet?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee from Friday evening to Sunday night.

Heavy snow is possible with total accumulations of 20 to 30 inches, except 2 to 4 feet above 7000 feet with up to 5 feet of snow on the crest possible. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

The heaviest snowfall rates are anticipated Saturday and Sunday. The combination of heavy snow and wind may bring periods of whiteout conditions.

South Tahoe High grad McCallan Castles heading to play football for Tennessee

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Since graduating from South Tahoe High School in 2018, McCallan Castles has been showing the rest of the football world what South Lake Tahoe already knew the athlete could do.

Castles, who has been playing for U.C. Davis Aggies for the past three years, announced Wednesday that he will be playing for the Tennessee Volunteers next fall. He started his collegiate career with the Cal Bears, playing three games for them in 2018. He transferred to UC Davis early in 2019. The psychology major has one year of eligibility to use at Tennessee.

Festival of Winter Lights moved to one night only due to incoming storm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to forecasted inclement weather, the Festival of Winter Lights will be held for one night only on Friday, December 9 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Unfortunately, the Saturday portion has been canceled.

Organizers are disappointed with this change but are still very excited to invite the public out to enjoy the event for one evening. This change will have no impact on the festivities, vendor line-up, or entertainment schedule for Friday night.

Nevada Gaming: South Shore Lake Tahoe casino gaming win up 13%, statewide up 4.83%

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,280,704,342 for the month of October 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report. This amounts to a 4.83 percent increase compared to October 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,221,749,941. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022), the gaming win has increased by 3.02 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

New South Lake Tahoe resident arrested on grand theft charges, outstanding warrants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sandeep Kumar, 29, was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on November 17. He is accused of stealing several hundred dollars from his employer.

According to SLTPD Sgt. Russell Liles, Kumar is a new resident of South Lake Tahoe and had worked for the business he allegedly stole from for only a couple of weeks. Upon arrest, it was discovered Kumar had outstanding warrants including one from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Barton Hospital seeing uptick in flu cases and hospitalizations

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hospitalizations due to the flu are spiking across the country, and South Lake Tahoe is no different.

"We continue to see an uptick in respiratory infections including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and other respiratory viruses, with the highest concentration in pediatric populations," said Dr. Tamara McBride, Barton's Director of Hospital Medicine, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Infection Control.

Happy ending found in Northern Nevada for puppies, mother dog rescued from abusive breeder

The Nevada Humane Society recently assisted in a large-scale rescue effort of nearly 300 abused dogs and puppies in Nye County.

While many rescued dogs were taken to different parts of the country to rehabilitate or be adopted, many found their forever homes in our local region of Northern Nevada.

The dogs in question were Caucasian Shepherds, from a failed breeding facility that turned into a nightmare for the animals involved.

While there are many ethical breeding kennels operating in Nevada, the individuals who owned the hundreds of shepherds were not among them.

Large turnout for South Lake Tahoe Christmas Tree lighting ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 7th annual Heavenly Village Tree Lighting was a huge success with a large crowd attending - organizers estimate thousands witnessed the lighting of the 65-foot tall fir tree.

Organizer and MC for the evening, Dreu Murin, welcomed the crowd to the evening's festivities which included incoming El Dorado County Sheriff Jeff Leikauf, Miss El Dorado County Carson Leikauf, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and South Lake Tahoe Police Department, and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

Tahoe Fund matching donations to Ski Run Community Park up to $100,000

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Ski Run Community Park in South Lake Tahoe sits at the base of Heavenly and is in the middle of the Ski Run neighborhood where hundreds of children live.

The ground was broken on the park in May, and plans have been firmed up since then.

Wylder Hope Valley continues Eastern Sierra History Series with Snowshoe Thompson

The Eastern Nevada History series at the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley will continue on Sunday, December 11 with a living history presentation of Snowshoe Thompson.

Thompson was known as the Mailman of the Sierra as he carried the mail across the Sierra Nevada winter snows for 20 years. He would travel the 180-mile round trip in just five days on his hand-crafted snow skates (skis) with nothing more than a jacket, dried meat, matches, and his 80-pound bag of mail.

The program starts at 1 p.m., is free, open to the public, and is presented inside the Resort’s heated tent.

Goal of 1,000 pairs of socks during Share, Care, and Give a Pair in Incline Village and Reno

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – RE/MAX Gold of Reno and Incline Village are hosting the annual sock drive, Share, Care, and Give a Pair, to help Northern Nevada HOPES.

The realtors will be collecting new, unused socks for distribution in the local community this winter for HOPES, who provide affordable, high-quality, medical, behavioral health, and support services for all. Tahoe Biltmore site to be developed as Waldorf Astoria Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Tahoe Biltmore, owned by EKN Development of Southern California, will become the Waldorf Astoria Lake Tahoe according to an announcement of the new brand agreement made by Hilton Hotels on Monday. The new resort is expected to be completed by 2027.

Lake Tahoe forecast: Winter Storm Warning extended, clearing midweek, then possibility of more snow

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week will end with a brief lull in the snow Sunday afternoon and evening, then the next wave of precipitation enters the region.

A Winter Weather Warning is still in effect until 1 p.m. Monday. Rejuvenated moisture is forecast to arrive late overnight/early Monday morning. Expect conditions to once again degrade from Alpine county northward. After Monday afternoon, precipitation should be more showery in nature, reducing the overall threat, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Calling all elves to help at the South Lake Tahoe Children's Memorial Tree

Prescribed burn operations around Lake Tahoe set to resume Monday

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will resume prescribed fire operations this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin, conditions and weather permitting. California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, Nevada Division of Forestry, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will be burning piles in numerous locations. Smoke will be present.
