From athlete panel sessions about backcountry safety to guided on-snow events and a film fest, the third annual Tahoe Backcountry Safety Awareness Week is chock full of events and online content curated by Take Care Tahoe. From December 11-16, 2023, both novice and experienced backcountry enthusiasts will have opportunities to learn how to safely recreate in the backcountry this winter.

Six Nevadans, three from Douglas County, indicted in fake elector plot

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Six Nevadans were indicted by a grand jury for their false portrayal as Nevada’s presidential electors in the aftermath of the 2020 election, says the state's Attorney General Aaron Ford.

Three of the six are Douglas County residents, with one, Eileen Rice, the wife of Douglas County Commissioner Wes Rice, and a Lake Tahoe resident.

Douglas County School Board Trustee Tony Magnotta submits resignation, calls out new board members

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Douglas County School Board Trustee Tony Magnotta has submitted his resignation, effective immediately. Magnotta has been one of the three longer-term trustees who have butted heads with the three new trustees who have been the center of controversy since being elected in November 2022.

Magnotta said he has spent the last year not being listened to and being subjected to "harassment and veiled threats."

40 acres of prescribed fire operations added to Lake Tahoe schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three new locations have been added to the prescribed fire map for this week. USDA Forest Service firefighters are scheduled to begin burning piles tomorrow off Cathedral and Spring Creek roads on the south end of Lake Tahoe, weather permitting.

South Lake Tahoe man accused of stealing over a million dollars from a non-profit retail chain

A South Lake Tahoe man was arrested in Sacramento Thursday after a federal grand jury returned an indictment against him, charging him with nine counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft, and three counts of monetary transactions with proceeds of specified unlawful activity. The indictment was unsealed after the arrest.

South Lake Tahoe City Council approves additional $500K for expanded Lake Link service

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Lake Link microtransit service is being expanded in South Lake Tahoe. The next phase will move the service area west along US50 to Lodi Avenue, encompassing the Tahoe Sierra (Sierra Tract) and Highland Woods neighborhoods.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the additional funding of $500,000 to support the expanded service which is provided by the South Shore Transportation Management Association (SSTMA).

FREE Learn to Skate Session

As winter approaches and activities begin to shift indoors, the Tahoe Ice Arena is offering a FREE learn to skate class for kids aged 4-9 years old. This class is designed to teach the basics in balance, learning how to fall, get back up, and basic strides. The FIRST CLASS is FREE and all others classes after December 9th are $10. Participants should dress warm, wear gloves, and a helmet. Bike, snowboarding, ski, and skate board helmets are fine. Participants who purchase any Learn To Skate Session can attend the Public Session afterwards for free in order to work on their skating.

Incoming storm gets Winter Weather Advisory Wednesday-Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area to be in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Thursday for areas above 6,000 feet.

Snow is expected above 6000 feet. Snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches, except 1-2 feet above 8000 feet. Ridge winds gusting as high as 100 mph.

Denny's closes in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday morning, employees were caught by surprise when they were told the Denny's in South Lake Tahoe would be closing that day. After 40+ years in business, the franchisee closed the doors.

Franchise owner Paul Schmidt said it was multiple reasons leading to the closure, starting with COVID. He said sales had declined since the pandemic, and then the Caldor Fire didn't help. He said while the volume at the restaurant was never high, they did okay until people started staying away from South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe; NV Energy issues PSOM for Carson-Genoa

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe area from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday. Expect winds from the southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and waves 2 to 4 feet for Lake Tahoe.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

NV Energy has issued a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for the Carson City - Genoa area for Wednesday, December 6.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Christmas Engine schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue's popular decorated fire truck will start making its holiday rounds on December 10, with the last stops on Christmas Eve. The truck will leave Station 1 at 5 p.m. nightly.

Rock Ensemble to raise funds for Encompass Youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Community College's Rock Ensemble class is holding a class performance on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Duke Theatre.

Directed by Liz Broscoe, the suggested donation is $5 with all proceeds going to Encompass Youth, a South Lake Tahoe-based 501(C)(3) nonprofit.

Broscoe, a talented and renowned percussionist, will also be performing.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show. The Duke Theatre is located on the Lake Tahoe Community College campus, One College Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Valley Fire releases holiday truck schedule

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Valley Fire Department has been busy putting on all of the holiday decorations on their fire truck so they can make the rounds this season. The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) is scheduled to continue widespread prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe, conditions and weather permitting. Smoke from these operations may be present throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin and surrounding areas.

Prescribed fire operations scheduled to begin on Wednesday at Lake Tahoe Airport

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department with assistance from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and Lake Valley Fire Protection District are conducting prescribed burns around the Lake Tahoe Airport starting on Wednesday, December 6 through Tuesday, December 12. The prescribed burns will take place over 22 acres with an estimated 230 identified piles to burn.

Syringe ordinance and tobacco retail zones on El Dorado County Board of Supervisors agenda

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) has its next meeting on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, starting at 9 a.m. After the 34-item consent agenda, there are five items.

In a 1:30 p.m. time certain agenda item, the BOS will discuss an urgency ordinance to prohibit the establishment, operation, use, and/or participation in a syringe exchange program within the unincorporated areas of the County to "protect the public health, safety, and general welfare of its residents."
