SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow has been constant over the Sierra, causing headaches along the mountain highways.

As of 6:45 p.m. Thursday, traffic is behind held between Pointview in Placerville to Meyers due to multiple spinouts. There is also avalanche control at Echo Summit and drivers can expect more of the same through the night.

I80 is closed at the state line to Colfax due to whiteout conditions.

SR89 around Emerald Bay is closed and there are high avalanche warnings for that area.

TAHOMA, Calif. – California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park by inviting the public to a free ski day on Sunday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime. The public can ski or snowshoe on the trails made famous when the biathlon and cross-country events of the 1960 Winter Olympics were held here.

Ivano Costantini, the owner of the popular Ivano’s Restaurant in Stateline, Nevada, passed away unexpectedly on December 6, 2022. He was born in Milano, Italy, and grew up in Napoli, Italy. Ivano graduated from the Institute of Agrario in Ponticelli before moving to the United States in 1989.

Ivano worked in the restaurant business in California and then opened his first restaurant in Lake Tahoe in 1994. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed boating, fishing, skiing, and running – everything Lake Tahoe had to offer.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to the next meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission as they discuss both the Tahoe Valley and Tourist Core area plans. Feedback is important as the City starts looking at amendments to the plans.

The meeting will be held Thursday, February 23 at 3 p.m. in the City Hall-Council Chambers, 1901 Lisa Maloff Way. Zoom will also be available.

This is the first of multiple public hearings to gain feedback from stakeholders and the general public.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold and stormy period will continue through the end of February and into the beginning of March, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. They say to anticipate several rounds of snow at all elevations, leading to widespread travel difficulties in the Sierra. Periods of enhanced winds will make it feel that much colder. Bundle up and protect vulnerable populations and pets.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4 a.m. Friday, then a Winter Weather Watch until Saturday, February 25 at 10 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has hired a seasoned community college coach and former student-athlete champion to launch and lead its new collegiate cross-country and long-distance track programs. Matthew Airola, a two-time California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) individual cross country and track & field champion with extensive coaching experience, will start at LTCC in February, with the program’s first competitive season beginning in August 2023.

The 8th annual State of Nevada Mathematics Championship is open to all Nevada students in grades 1-12, regardless of past math competition experience or participation.

This contest is being hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus, and is sponsored by Microsoft. There is an online option for eligible students who are sick or more than a 2-hour drive away.
 
Trophies and medals are awarded to top performers at NNVMath's Annual End of Year Awards Dinner on May 20. Awards will be mailed to those unable to attend the awards dinner.

The Glenshire-Brockway project, a 1,175-acre project to reduce hazardous fuels between Glenshire and Brockway summits has been completed. The project is a collaboration of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the National Forest Foundation (NFF), and the Truckee Fire Protection District (TFPD).

The area is full of dense forest stands across both public and private lands. Crews thinned brush and small trees for wildfire mitigation while maintaining the more fire-resilient trees.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Guests of Northstar, Heavenly, and Kirkwood are making sure that their time on the slopes is positively impacting the environment through Vail Resorts' EpicPromise Guest Donation Program. By donating a dollar when purchasing online lift tickets, season passes, lodging, and rounds of golf over the past twelve months, guests at these Vail Resorts locations have raised more than $187,000 for the Tahoe Fund to support environmental improvement projects in the Tahoe Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pleasant conditions will continue through the holiday weekend, with the warmest temperatures expected Monday. An abrupt change happens Tuesday as an active weather period returns with a two-part storm that will bring high winds, snow, and cold through late week. It is looking like there will be another cold, snowy pattern returning at the end of February.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the first part of the storm Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Gusty winds with lighter snow could cause visibility issues.

Rumor has it that outdoor recreation and species conservation are at odds. Outdoor activities and infrastructure are often typecast as an inevitable threat to forest flora and fauna. However, a collaboration between the Forest Service and a destination ski resort is turning that stereotype on its head to protect a keystone tree — the whitebark pine.

Megan Galloway, CNM, and Keri Storey, CNM have joined the practice, bringing diversified care experience and improved access to obstetric care and family planning resources to the Lake Tahoe community.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) is holding a brand new fundraiser for the South Lake Tahoe community, the Mad Hatter Tea Party. An afternoon of fabulous decorations, fun, activities, and of course, tea, is slated for the historic Valhalla Grand Hall on Sunday, April 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Douglas County has opened its grant cycle, giving all not-for-profit agencies a chance to apply for funding. All interested must complete and submit a grant application. Funding this year is limited and not all requests will be granted or fully funded.

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program in South Lake Tahoe continues to have a great need for community volunteer drivers to help deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors and other vulnerable residents. The meals are prepared by the Senior Nutrition Program and the volunteers deliver those meals.

Most volunteers are asked to help one day a week, though more is appreciated. Drivers cover an assigned route, delivering meals between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., starting at the Senior Center in South Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - What a unique and opportunistic employment position nursing students are in at Western Nevada College (WNC). Instead of visiting potential employers for job interviews, the hospitals and healthcare facilities came to them this week for WNC Nursing Program's annual Job Fair.
           
But that was only part of the three-hour event in the Cedar Building. One hundred Registered Nursing (RN) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students also received professional development information and advice as well.
           

Winter is in full force in Tahoe, and with it comes an influx of eager snow-players. Sledding and snow tubing are sure to be among the winter activities that families pursue, and like many contact sports, the risk of injury is increased.

Falling off a sled can result in injuries including bruises, cuts and broken bones, and commonly, concussions. Other common sledding-related injuries include solid organ injuries, vertebral fractures, and chest trauma. Sledders can get seriously hurt if their sled hits a stationary object, such as a rock or a tree.

When a nurse on vacation travels to Hawaii, the last thing they'd expect is to be called into service on the airplane trip over. But that is exactly what happened to Daryl Braga of South Lake Tahoe.

Braga was seated and watching an in-flight movie with his wife and daughter on a flight from Sacramento to Maui when a flight attendant hurriedly ran by his aisle seat. Unlike in the movies, there was no overhead page asking for medical personnel, but he knew to go to the action and let them know of his qualifications.

It is incredibly rare to have this magnitude of pristine beauty and diverse communities that together support a $5 billion regional economy.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is looking ahead to the summer road construction season by accepting applications for paid summer internships.

Applications can be submitted through Feb. 28, but applicants are encouraged to apply quickly as recruitment may close at any time based on the number of applicants.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Career Technical Education (CTE) team with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District is holding a Family Fun Night on Wednesday, March 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

All families and students K-12th grade are invited.

The CTE teachers, students, and professionals from each pathway will have booths set up with more information about the CTE programs at South Tahoe High School. The four focused pathways are Allied Health, Media Arts, Hospitality and Tourism, Environmental Science and Engineering.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hope Lutheran Church invites the public to join them for a time of healing on Ash Wednesday, February 22.

Pastor Diana Turner will be in Stateline again with "Ashes to Go" from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., then services are at the church at 5:30 p.m.
