A colonoscopy is a potentially life-saving preventative screening test. Its primary role is preventing or finding colorectal cancer when it’s most treatable. Recommended every 10 years starting at age 45, a colonoscopy allows your provider to see problems such as inflammation or bleeding in the large bowel, and it can be life-saving if a tumor or precancerous growths, called polyps, are detected.

In early 2021, Dr. Steven Leman and his partners Sean Bishop and Jonathan Raymond (Quick Care Tahoe, LLC) opened the medical business at the South Lake Tahoe "Y" at 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
El Dorado Board of Supervisors vote 3-2 to disband Human Rights Commission

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Even though there was overwhelming support voiced for keeping the El Dorado County Human Rights Commission, the supervisors took a first vote to dissolve the five-year-old commission through the adoption of a new ordinance. Supervisors Brooke Laine and John Hidahl were the only two to vote in favor of keeping the commission, with Supervisors Lori Parlin, John Turnboo, and Wendy Thomas against.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) youth robotics team from South Lake Tahoe emerged as a member of the winning team at the Nevada State Championships earlier this month. Local Team #20681 Giga Bite with partners VC Silver Circuits and MCII formed the winning alliance and battled it out against 29 other teams from across the state and nearby regions.

Barton Health Foundation donates 8 lifesaving AEDs to South Lake Tahoe schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Health Foundation, as part of its Heart Safe Community program, recently donated eight automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to aid in the response of heart issues to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2,000 young, seemingly healthy people under age 25 in the United States die each year of sudden cardiac arrest.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – This winter, Lake Tahoe has experienced the third-highest snowfall on record, with more on the way. Last week’s warm atmospheric river caused structural collapses, avalanches, and extensive flooding around South Lake Tahoe. Of particular concern is a flooded sewer pump station on the Upper Truckee Marsh. Epic collaboration resulted in a solution to address flooding and help prevent a sewer spill.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - Almost 150 members of the community attended Wednesday's first of what Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) leaders hope to be the annual State of the District/LCAP Community Conversation.
Attendance was more than double expectations and attendees heard a presentation from LTUSD leadership, participated in interactive tabletop conversations and heard from local leaders.
EL Dorado County woman sentenced to 90 days in jail and community service in animal cruelty case

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – El Dorado County resident Sandra Tidwell pled guilty to felony animal cruelty charges and was sentenced this week to 90 days in jail and 250 hours of community service.
When a search warrant was served on the 50-year-old's home in El Dorado Hills in July 2022, animal services officers found 25 German Shepherd and Husky breed dogs living in deplorable conditions, including 15 adult dogs and ten puppies at Tidwell’s property where she was illegally keeping the animals inside her 1,200 square foot home.

California Tahoe Conservancy grants $250,000 to tackle invasive plants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The California Tahoe Conservancy (Conservancy) Board approved a $250,000 grant to Tahoe Resource Conservation District (Tahoe RCD) for aquatic invasive plant surveillance and rapid response in Lake Tahoe.
“Aquatic invasive species threaten wildlife habitat, water quality, and recreation opportunities at Lake Tahoe,” said Adam Acosta, Conservancy board chair. “We’re excited to support Tahoe RCD’s efforts to detect and remove invasive plant infestations to help protect the Lake.”

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Rain-on-snow events bring unique challenges to wastewater operations in Lake Tahoe. As streets and meadows flood, stormwater seeps through manholes and into the sewer system. This inundates wastewater pump stations and the wastewater treatment plant, increasing the risk of sewer spills.
During this week’s atmospheric river, South Tahoe Public Utility District worked every day around the clock to address challenges and ensure reliable water and wastewater services.
City council approves purchase of new snow removal equipment for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Snow removal has been a challenge this winter with much more than just snow to deal with. One of those challenges has been equipment, and the need for four new graders and two blowers.
During its Tuesday meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council approved the purchase of those items along with a smaller blower for trails and bike paths. The price tag is a big one, over $3,500,000.
Raley's plans to reopen one South Lake Tahoe store soon

10:30 p.m. UPDATE: The team at Raley's at the "Y" made great progress in safely removing snow off the roof Wednesday. The Emerald Bay Road store is prepared to reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday, March 16.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – The Precautionary Evacuation Warning for the Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir area has been lifted. On Sunday, March 12, Douglas County issued a Precautionary Evacuation Warning for the Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir area due to a possible reservoir overflow which could affect homes and property in the area. The reservoir waters did not breach the rim and have since receded. At the direction of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire, the precautionary evacuation warning has been lifted.
Water in Lake Tahoe fully flips for first time since winter of 2018-19

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Lake Tahoe flipped on February 27 or 28 according to the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC). Flipping is when the water fully mixes vertically from top to bottom.
Even though smaller lakes are fully mixed annually, it is less common for Lake Tahoe with a depth of 1,640 feet. The last time Tahoe flipped was in the winter of 2018-19.
TERC researchers are on the like every week to sample water quality, the phytoplankton, and the overall health. They maintain instruments placed on the lake that take instruments every few minutes.
South Tahoe Middle School Club Live clears fire hydrants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe Middle School Club Live volunteers recently cleared fire hydrants in South Lake Tahoe. On February 11 at 10 a.m., Club Live volunteers cleared fire hydrants around the school.
Club Live is a school club that encourages kids to lead a healthy lifestyle. During meetings Club Live often will have a game to get everyone up, moving, and socializing. The club also teaches kids about the threat of smoking, vaping, and drinking irresponsibly.

Go Fund Me fundraiser set up for 2015 South Tahoe High grad Luke Garratt

A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been established for former South Lake Tahoe resident Luke Garratt.
The 26-year-old is now recovering in the Los Angeles area after having a stroke followed by open heart surgery. He is facing 4-6 months of physical therapy at a skilled nursing center to regain his strength back.
Over 4500 Liberty Utilities customers without power in South Lake Tahoe

Liberty Utilities has given an estimated time of restoral at 7:52 p.m. No cause has been released.

Incline High School evacuated over concerns of a gas leak

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - On Tuesday, March 14, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) along with Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) responded to Incline High School for a reported smell of natural gas.
Students were evacuated while fire crews attempted to locate the origin. No gas was detected inside the structure but high levels of gas were detected in multiple locations in the snow on the roof. Due to the heavy snow load, the crews were unable to locate the origin of the leak with this information, natural gas was turned off to the structure.
Nine South Lake Tahoe and Meyers homes and businesses red tagged, 86 damaged due to snow loads

UPDATE 4 p.m.: The numbers have changed a bit during the day. There have now been 150 inspections, with 103 homes/businesses damaged and 15 red-tagged. The following streets in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers are currently closed: Ute, Choctaw, Angora Creek, and Werner Salas.

Safeway at Round Hill reopening; Douglas County offices closed

UPDATE 3/14 9 a.m. - The Round Hill Safeway is opening its doors by 9:00 a.m. this morning after a long night of snow removal and coordination between engineers and the Douglas County building department.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. - The Safeway at Round Hill is closed at this time due to concerns about building safety. Douglas County's Community Development office placed a red tag on the building Monday morning, saying the structure was unsafe for occupancy at this time.

Alpine County EOC declares local emergency, services and offices to close Tuesday-Wednesday

Alpine County has declared a local state of emergency. Due to the March storms and atmospheric river events, conditions are or are likely to become, beyond the control of services, personnel, equipment, and facilities in the County.
In an abundance of caution, Alpine County emergency operations center canceled all commission and committee meetings effective immediately through Friday, March 17, 2023.
LTUSD reopens building at South Tahoe High that was closed due to snow load concerns

UPDATE 3/14 3 p.m.: Lake Tahoe Unified School District received the go-ahead to reopen Building C on the South Tahoe High School campus.
UPDATE 3/13 4 p.m.: Over the past week, representatives of the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and LTUSD determined the flat roof buildings at South Tahoe High School should be reviewed. They did so with the use of a drone. It was determined that the A-B-C hall at the school was in need of further review so on Monday, CalFire conducted a walkthrough with the LTUSD directors of facilities and transportation.

Expect lesser snow amounts through Monday than originally forecast, then a fast drop in snow levels late Tuesday into Wednesday. Unsettled and showery
conditions remain possible later this week through next weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Saint Theresa Church is holding its annual St. Patrick's Dinner of traditional corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and Irish soda bread on Friday, March 17, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.

This is a fundraiser and the cost for adults is $15, and for kids ages 5 - 12 $10.

High avalanche danger for Lake Tahoe - one takes out power lines at Stanford Camp

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Sierra Avalanche Center has issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the central Sierra Nevada between Yuba Pass to the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area. High avalanche danger is expected in the mountains through at least Monday morning.
Expect slabs of wind-blown snow and storm snow to avalanche as heavy snow, some rain, and strong winds continue today. Avalanches could occur on any steep slope at any elevation. Travel in, near, or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Continued structure issues around South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The heavy snow loads and excess water from the current train of storms continues to compromise roofs around South Lake Tahoe. On Sunday morning, Raley's at the Y closed due to leaking issues. "Due to weather, and in an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed our store," said the store in a statement. "We will post updates as they become available."
TJ Maxx in South Lake Tahoe is also closed due to leaking issues and safety concerns.
On Saturday, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a mobile home on Julie Lane that had a roof collapse.
Douglas County issues precautionary evacuation warning for Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A precautionary evacuation warning has been issued for the Buckeye/Dangberg Reservoir area due to a possible reservoir overflow. If this happened, the 50 homes in the area and property could be affected.
An overflow could impact other property infrastructure in the area.

As we deal with snow, rain, dangerous roofs, and roads, the time change may be the last thing on our minds. Sunday, March 12 marks the one time a year when a day has 23 hours in it as Daylight Saving Time begins, and clocks move forward at 2 a.m.
But why are we still having to switch times twice a year after California voters voted to abolish the ritual? Voters passed a ballot measure in 2018 by almost 60 percent, telling the state legislature they wanted a change to daylight saving. State lawmakers still have not passed legislation to abolish it.
Crews responding to flooding in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe public works department is getting help from both South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Tahoe Douglas Fire in helping to mitigate localized flooding.
Streets in the Bijou area were experiencing heavy flooding - Bill Avenue, Shirley Avenue, Vanda Lee Way, and Betty Rae Lane were closed Saturday but have since reopened, though there is still some flooding. Werner Salas Drive is still closed.
There are many other areas experiencing flooding in South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, and crews have been also addressing them when they can.
Heavenly Mountain Resorts plans on opening Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After two days of closure, Heavenly Mountain Resorts plans on opening on Sunday with a delayed start time. They are currently digging out, tackling rime ice removal from lifts/lift terminals, conducting snow safety work, and preparing across the mountain for guests to return.
There has been heavy and deep higher elevation snow and rime ice, so those upper mountain runs and lifts won't be open at first. The plan is to have the following areas open:
